Heather Bay Romance #1

The Accidental Impostor

Rate this book
A SMALLTOWN, CLEAN, ROMANTIC COMEDY FEATURING A MOODY LAIRD, A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY, AND A SHEEP CALLED EDNA. A LAUGH OUT LOUD "SCOTTISH BRIDGET JONES" She never intended to live a double life… and she definitely didn’t intend to fall in love in the process. Emerald Taylor might not have intended to live a double-life, but, then again, she didn’t intend to lose her job and her boyfriend on the same day, either. These things just tend to happen to her, so it’s lucky for her that when she heads back to the Highlands without a penny to her name, her childhood best friend, Frankie, is there to bail her out with a job in her cleaning firm. While cleaning her first house, though, Emerald is surprised to find the hot-but-aloof new Laird standing on the doorstep. He’s there to take the owner of the house on a blind date — and he thinks Emerald is her. Well, what would you have done? Emerald has always had accidents: big ones, small ones, really quite awkward ones. It’s kind of her thing.
Jack Buchanan, however, might just be her biggest “accident” yet...

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you BookSirens and Amber Eve for this opportunity.

It was a very enjoyable read and it had huge Bridget Jones vibes. I would love to see it turned into a romcom. It's light and funny, easy to follow, with fast-paced action and a very lovable MC.

》》The Plot《《

After being dumped by her boyfriend, who also stole all of her life savings, losing her job and the apartment she had been sharing with the up-mentioned boyfriend, Emerald Taylor returnes home to try and piece her life back togheter. Here, her best friends offers her a job at the cleaning company where, while on her very first job, she manages to get into a new sort of trouble. While cleaning the house, Jack, the Laird of Heather Bay (who also happens to be extremely attractive, rich and moody) shows up and, confusing Emerald for the house owner, takes her out on a date. And here is where things just start getting more and more complicated, pushing Emerald into a bunch of funny but uncomfortable situations.

"If this was a movie, this would be the moment someone would ask if I needed a glass of water. I’ve always wondered why people do that, actually? What is it about water that’s supposed to be good for shock? Why not gin, say? Or vodka? Or anything other than stupid old water?"

The writing style was humorous and light, with lovely characters and a nice way of walking you through the story. Some scenes were simply hilarious and I enjoyed this romantic novel a lot.

》》Favorite Scenes《《

⭐The Outlander reference

"There’s even a castle on the cliffside just outside the village, but it’s not ruined or haunted, and, no, Jamie Fraser doesn’t live in it, so it’s always been a bit of a disappointment, really."

⭐The sheep on the bus
⭐Talking about reasons for the break-up

“Maybe he’s been abducted by aliens?” I suggest, taking a tentative sip of my wine.
“Maybe he’s dead?” Mum counters, upping the ante considerably.
“Yes, hopefully,” I agree. “That would at least be a decent explanation for all of this.”
“That’s the spirit, lass,” says Dad, slapping me cheerfully on the back.

⭐The date
⭐Emerald and Lexie
⭐The clothing accident, again
⭐Emerald’s List of Mortal Enemies

"Emerald’s List of Mortal Enemies:
Ex-Boyfriend Ben
Jack Buchanan
Finn Whateverhisfaceis
Brian-from-the-bank
Jude Paw"

⭐The swimming incident
⭐Brian calling to be kept in the loop
⭐Bella's gowns
⭐The fence
⭐Emerald taking McTavish to the ball
⭐The ball
⭐Scarlet liking Emerald
⭐The Epilogue

》》Conclusion《《

"I go on the date, obviously.
Oh come on, you’ve read this far; do I really sound like someone who’d make the right decision to you? Even in the face — the really quite impossibly handsome face — of someone like Jack Buchanan?
Of course not."

I enjoyed it a lot and I definitely intend to keep an eye on the author for future works. It was sweet, it had exactly my type of humor and I loved the writing style. I recommend this to all Bridget Jones fans.
Also, the Pride and Prejudice references were a jem.

I managed to finish this book and I really truly do not know how.

Emerald is frankly infuriating as a character. I don’t particularly enjoy when lying and deceit is a main theme of a book but very occasionally I can overcome it. There was absolutely no solid reasoning that I could find that would lead someone to just keep making things worse for themselves other than just “I needed a convoluted storyline in order to fill pages”. Not only that but I have so many questions about how exactly this was able to go on for so long. How did a magazine editor accept a submission from a presumably long term member of staff from some random email address and not immediately flag this up with that writer? In a town of about 10 people, in which Emerald is supposedly ‘infamous’ for ruining this gala nobody happened to mention her to Jack? Jack didn’t google the publication or Scarlett Scott before even going to meet her for the first time? Really?!

Which brings me to Jack, poor one-dimensional Jack. He’s a laird and he’s hot. That is literally all we ever find out about him, except some half hearted conversations about wolves and whisky that aren’t properly fleshed out. There is absolutely no reason that he would even like Emerald never-mind forgive her for all the lying in the end. There is absolutely no chemistry between them whatsoever, the whole thing is truly bizarre. Even emerald can’t express what she likes about him other than that he’s hot and smells nice.

I’m amongst all of this we have Ben. The voice in Emerald’s head and ex boyfriend who took all her money. We don’t find out what happened to him but I will say that there is no question whatsoever of why he left her. Honestly, I’m surprised she even noticed he left with how self centred she is.

Finally, the end of the book just so neatly tied up in a bow with no real discussion of this absolute sociopathic behaviour and what irl would inevitably be grounds for a restraining order. Honestly, I’m willing to suspend disbelief to a certain point but this book is just utterly batshit.

This was a fun, lovely, easy read that was fast paced and hilarious, perfect if you're looking for a light-hearted, cute read to put you out of your reading slump !

Couldn't stop reading because i was intrigued to find out how she was going to get herself out of each sticky situation!

Sometimes with all of the situations that Emerald gets herself into i was getting minor secondhand embarrassment!

I could easily see this turned into a fun film or a series!

This was such a fun read! I loved the personality that had gone into building every character in the story, plus the situations they found themselves in time and again - particularly Emerald. I found myself having to force myself to slow down reading because I wanted to find out how she was going to get herself out of each sticky situation! I can imagine this as a hilarious rom com on the big screen, sort of like a Scottish version of Bridget Jones. It was a lovely easy read that was fast paced and hilarious, perfect for a summer holiday.

Super cute, easy to read, sweet love story!
Emerald is a fun loveable character, even though she may make some questionable choices. Jack was everything you want from a broody laird.
I'll be honest though, as great as Emerald was as a character, she was also one of the more annoying characters in the book. I know her questionable decision making was the whole point of the book, but she spent so much time lying to everyone, and it didn't feel like she actually learnt from her mistakes in the end.
All in all though, this was an enjoyable read, with some great funny moments, and an adorable love story.

Thank you to the author, Amber Eve, and Book Sirens for allowing me to read this as an ARC. This is my honest review.

So much fun! I knew from the cover alone that I would enjoy reading this book. After finishing it I immediately talked to my friend about it because i just had to tell someone how cute this was

I know Emerald might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but who doesn’t love a funny character? There were some moments that I actually giggle snorted (without it being forced). That’s already the best compliment that I can give. A well-done rom com.

Perfect!

I am floored this was a first novel. This reads like one of a bestsellers' successful series (and I know it will be, soon!)

This was everything you want in a light romance; humor, mix ups, drama and intrigue, gobs of atmosphere (gorgeously Scottish), tension and an HEA.
A great read.

This book was a nice quick read. The main character Emerald really gets herself into a lot of ‘accidents’. A lot happens to her that some communication and belief in herself could sort out like the whole mistaken identity situation she gets herself into. But that plot point was what drew me to read the book in the first place.
The relationship between Emerald and Jack seemed a bit lacking in chemistry if I’m being really honest. Maybe some scenes from his point of view would be nice to round the story out.
I’d love to know what happened with Ben. I feel that could have been explored more. Or changed to more normal breakup. Just disappearing seemed a little much.
I also would have liked to find out if Emerald contacted Scarlett. There seemed to be a bit of a foreshadowing moment where I thought that Emerald would end up with a writing job like Scarlett for her magazine. It was a bit disappointing that in the epilogue she was still working for the cleaning business.
I could see this book being made into a fun movie on Netflix. Although with all of the situations that Emerald gets herself into if I was watching I’d probably have to pause it a few times as I get bad secondhand embarrassment from situations like the ones she gets herself into.
Id be interested enough to read the next one in the series when it comes out.

This is a really good first book for Amber Eve and I look forward to reading the rest of the "Heather Bay Romance" series.

Heather Taylor had left her native Heather Bay in the highlands of Scotland for London, she didn't have a choice after the disaster that she had caused, no one liked her…….well, perhaps her best friends Frankie and McTavish might still like her. Emerald was now back in Heather Bay licking her wounds, she had nowhere else to go when her ex boyfriend, Ben, had left her and taken all her money with him, she didn't have a penny to her name, Oh, and she didn't have a job.

This story follows Emerald catapulting from disaster to disaster, each one worse than the last, working as a cleaner for her best friend Frankie, meeting the handsome, wealthy Laird, Jack Buchanan and disliking him, borrowing someone else's identity. Emerald continues digging herself into holes, each hole deeper than the last one and while all this is happening realising that Jack isn't so bad after all and falling madly in love with him.I must admit that it took me a while to get into this story but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it, I love the witty banter, I loved the old Scottish sayings, I even loved McTavish.

This was such a fun read! Emerald left her Scottish town for London to escape from "The Thing".

Her ex-boyfriend, Ben, cleared out their joint bank account and maxed out their credit card when he booked a first class flight and fled to LA.

She's returned to Scotland broke and unemployed. Her best friend, Frankie, hires her to work at her cleaning company, Highland Maids. While cleaning her first house, she snoops and tries on the client's clothes and makeup. The local laird, Jack Buchanan, comes knocking at the door. When she answers, of course he assumes she's his friend's cousin, Scarlett Scott. Emerald knows she has to confess who she actually is but wants to wait for the perfect moment. It's just that the perfect moment seems to always just be out of her grasp.

There are several funny moments as she tries to either confess or put off her confession. At times, in my mind's eye, I could see Lucille Ball playing the part of Emerald if this was a movie during Lucy's heyday.

I received an ARC of this book from the author via Booksprout. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

This is a book that you may want to discuss with friends or in a book club. The story is told in Emerald's first-person point of view. She loses her job, and her ex dumps her after stealing her money. Emerald is forced to leave London and return to her parents’ house in the Scottish Highlands. She begins to work as a maid for an old friend’s cleaning company. Emerald crosses paths with an attractive, grumpy, wealthy Laird. She pretends to be someone else and they start to spend time together. Her deception spins out of control. I didn’t find Emerald's character to be funny, cute or sympathetic. Instead, Emerald's impetuous (and sometimes illegal) actions and her constant excuses and rationalizations were irritating. Her eventual redemption was too late to turn off all of that negativity. I still gave this story three stars since the writing was good, Jack was a wonderful character, and the supporting characters and the Scottish Highlands setting were enjoyable. I’m looking forward to this author’s other books due to the positives. I received an advance copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily

I loved this cute little romance! The setting was gorgeous; I've not read many books set in Scotland and definitely none recently but it's beautiful and I've always wanted to visit so it's nice to be able to visit in a book. The book and accident-prone Emerald were hilarious right from the start and from the first page I knew I was going to love this book! Some of the things Emerald did were quite cringey though, like you obviously knew they were going to end badly so sometimes I didn't know whether to laugh or just internally die along with her. I was definitely shouting "WHYYY?!" at her in my head a few times haha! Jack was a great MMC too that everyone can love, the romance was really cute. I was definitely rooting for them even if she went about it badly haha. I'm also really glad we did get to find out what happened with The Thing, but I wished we'd also found out what happened with her ex (although it sounds like we'll find out in a future book? They're not about Emerald though so I'm not sure). I loved it though and am looking forward to reading the next one despite who the MC is haha.

This is the first book of the series, Heather Bay Romance, and is also my first time reading something by this author. The cover is cute, and drew my attention and when I read the blurb, I definitely became interested in reading it. I was not disappointed! It's a small town, clean romance, and simply just a charming read. The story was fun, light-hearted, with a fast pace and I had a wonderful time reading it. The author did a nice job creating scenes and dialogue and really pulled me into the story. Ms. Eve did a great job in developing the characters and bringing their personalities to life. Jack and Emerald were so great together and had such intense chemistry, I immediately fell in love with them. Filled with fun, humor, romance, not to mention a lot of sticky situations, the story had me completely engrossed till the very end. Such an adorable story and the characters were absolutely endearing, I fell in love with them right from the start. Can't wait to read more books by this author!

So glad I had the opportunity to read this!

What an excellent first book.
I struggled to put it down, if it hadn’t been for sleeping and work it would’ve been finished in a day.

Knowing the author from online, I actually pictured her as Emerald, even down to the dog in the story. You can’t help but take to the main character as by trying to do good she’s always causing chaos. Just a total domino effect of catastrophes.
McTavish was the other character that I really enjoyed, but there’s great character building for everyone featured in the story.

Being Scottish I always enjoy books set in Scotland as it’s easier to get that escapism and picture it all. Although I’m sure most readers could picture the setting in so many places.
It really was a fabulous pick me up and a good few laugh out loud moments.

I’ve seen it mentioned as the Scottish Bridget Jones and that’s a perfect description of it.
Looking forward to the next books planned by Amber Eve and would definitely recommend anyone to try this author out.
In a world that can drag us down in so many areas at the moment, we all need some feel good moments.

3.5⭐️, 0🌶️

This one was just a light, fun, read, and a solid 3.5 stars- so if you’re a mood reader like me, this is a good one to mix in when you don’t feel like picking up the 800 page fantasy book that you’ve been chipping away at lol!! A case of mistaken identity for a loveable accident prone fmc leading to instalove with a rich broody bachelor mmc- what more could you want? Oh, did I also mention that this is all set in the Scottish highlands? I did catch myself laughing while reading (Emerald’s inner monologue is hilarious and painfully relatable), but that was paired with the anxiety I had the whole time waiting for Emerald’s true identity to get revealed!! I also should have picked up on the whole loose Cinderella retelling thing a lot sooner than I did lol. The ending seemed a bit stunted- but it’s not like you didn’t know where things were going anyway, and the epilogue kind of fills things in, so I’m not mad. Will likely pick up the next books in the series.

Begging to be made into a movie!

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway! No lie, I entered this giveaway because it was set in the highlands and I’m a huge Outlander fan, so I thought it was hysterical that the book made a point to make humor related to everyone thinking the Highlands are like Outlander.

The book is laugh out loud funny at times and Emerald is so cringey and relatable. You keep the pages turning just to see what she will get up to next. I see that the author has another book coming out in December and I will definitely be adding it to my TBR! I would also like to see a sequel to this book to see what Emerald gets into next.

This book would make a great rom com movie, and I’m excited to see what else this author comes out with. 5 stars! Thank you to goodreads and the publisher for my copy.

Thanks to BookSirens for an advance review copy of this book. I am voluntarily reviewing this book.

After reading the synopsis of this book, I expected to like it but unfortunately, I struggled with it quite a bit. The writing was painful, with a stream-of-consciousness sentence structure, run-on sentences as well as sentence fragments and improper use of punctuation.

The plot of the story was over the top unbelievable, but did have quite a few scenes that made me laugh. However, the first half of the book dragged on and it was difficult to keep reading. The second half of the book did pick up the pace and I had no trouble finishing it. I also felt there were too many side characters; it felt like some of them were included just to introduce them for the next books in this series.

Overall, this book just fell flat for me.

If you're looking for a light-hearted, adorable read to get you out of your reading rut, this was a pleasant, lovely, simple read that was quick paced and amusing!
Every character in the novel had a unique personality, and I adored the situations they frequently found themselves in, especially Emerald. I had to remind myself to read more slowly since I was eager to find out how she was going to escape each sticky predicament! This would make for a wonderful romantic comedy on television, sort of like a Scottish Bridget Jones. It was an enjoyable, quick read that was hilarious and ideal for a summer vacation.

With all of the circumstances Emerald finds herself in, she occasionally experiences slight secondhand humiliation! I was curious to see how she would get herself out of each sticky predicament, so I couldn't put the book down.

Thank you to BookSirens for the ARC! :)

Amber Eve is my next favourite author and I enjoyed her writing so much.

It was so easily to picture a film along the lines of the book. It took me longer to get through the book than I wished but it still was such a fun read. I wish there were more romantic pieces between Jack and Emerald. It really enjoyed reading how Emerald grew into liking Jack. Lexie reminded me a lot of the girls who I went to high school with and I secretly (not so secretly) got so much satisfaction out of her receiving what she deserves.

I cannot wait to read the next book to see what sticky situations Lexie gets herself into.
And…I hope one day McTavish gets his happy ending.

Thanks so much to @f0reveramber and booksirens for allowing me this ARC.

Stand alone story

This is the first book I’ve read by Amber Eve. I think I’d like to try something else by the author. I did like the lighthearted writing style and the Cinderella elements. Jack is a flawed hero, but seemed to have good intentions. Emerald consistently makes many cringe-worthy decisions that I wouldn’t expect from a character her age, and she takes the deception much further than Cinderella (closer to Mrs. Doubtfire). I would recommend this book to readers who prefer flawed characters.

I received a copy of the book at my request (and read it in KU), and the opinions here are my own.

Firstly, this is an excellent book. I found it to be engaging, compelling and utterly delightful. There were some great twists and the characters were believable and likeable. This book straddles the lines between romance, comedy and cosy mystery really well.

Things I like:
- The mystery of The Thing
- That so many people were named with colours
- Emerald's list making & internal dialogue
- The characters and the town (McTavish and Bella are so great)

I'm very much looking forward to reading book two.

I really enjoyed this book and it left me feeling happy and wanting more. The main character, Emerald, reminded me of Sophie Kinsella's Becky Bloomwood, from the Shopaholic series. I’m sure there are real people out there who get into scrapes like Emerald all the time. I’m most certainly not one of those people but it sure does provide for entertaining reading. I'm really looking forward to reading more of this series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was a great fun read. It is a slow burn, clean, romantic comedy that has a great storyline. I liked Emerald and I liked that she wasn’t a perfect MC. I also liked that she goes through so many funny and sometimes cringy moments that makes you feel a little awkward but it was still a good read. The premise was interesting and it did entertain me. I would definitely read more for this author.

Emerald and Scarlet

Emerald seems to have a way of getting herself into all kinds of trouble. Moving home because she has nothing left in the big city isn't really any better. The first thing she does is assume someone else's identity and get involved with a man who is the Laird of the Bay. Old problems come rushing back and at one point Emerald/Scarlet almost loses her life. Does it end happily
Or does she have to run for her life?
