I’m a businessman. My business? Killing.
Most would assume being an assassin is a no-rules kind of profession. It’s not. There are eight rules to being a hitman for hire. I’ve never had a problem with any of them until my best friend went and fell in love with my mark.
And now he hates me. Which, frankly, makes him an asshole because I didn’t even kill her.
Still, when he calls and offers me a chance to get back into his good graces by helping him out with his little sister, I agree.
Then what do I do?
Kiss her.
I have no idea why. She’s maddening and annoying. Her sunshine personality is too bright for my permanent black mood. She never shuts up and thinks everything’s exciting. And she’s a terrible driver. Runs over everything in that damn wheelchair.
It’s definitely not because of the thousands of flowers always in her hair or the way her wide hazel eyes look at me like I’m a hero and not a villain.
I am a villain. Always was and always will be.
V doesn’t know that, though, because her brother, my best friend, never told her what I did. Who I really am. He’s forbidden me to go near her, but, as I mentioned, following rules isn’t what I do.
I might want to be her hero, but I’m starting to think this girl needs a villain. Not only to free her from the cage her brother locks her in but to keep her safe from the people who realize she’s my weak spot.
People who will kill her to get to me.
But once a villain, always a villain. And if they want to get to her sunlight, they’re gonna have to walk through my darkness to get there.

Read Huntsman if you love:
- Opposites Attract
- Brother’s Best Friend
- Grumpy/Sunshine
- Disabled Heroine
- Asian Male Lead
- Morally Gray Male
- Possessive/Protective Male
- Found Family
- Suspense/Action
- NYC Setting

Huntsman is a contemporary romance with elements of suspense and a villain for a hero. It can be read as a standalone but would be better enjoyed if you read Ivory White first. Huntsman has a guaranteed happy ending and does not have a cliffhanger. Huntsman is written in first person with dual POV.
Please note this book contains violence, murder, bad parenting, and mentions of parental death. Some readers may find these things uncomfortable.

I was lucky enough to read this book early. I am not shy to announce my love of Cambria’s books. I LOVED Huntsman Earth and Virginia. Ok I loved seeing all the Misfits throughout this books.

The research Cambria put into this book was clearly evident in Virginia. I loved it. She is such a sweet girl locked away not living to her potential due to being wheelchair bound. Poor girl just wants her own life and love. Well she sure does find it all with Earth. She has an open heart and sees the good in him. Not the villain. He protects and he does it hard.. he clearly loves his family, which is not a blood family. Again, the misfits.

Absolutely perfection to me. I am already ready for the next book. And this cover, is absolutely gorgeous

I will never not read a book by Cambria Hebert. She has become one of my favorite authors. I love her writing and the character she creates. I never thought there would be a group of her characters that I would love more than the Hashtag gang, but y’all these misfits are vying for the top spot!
I love this series so much and have been so curious about Earth. I love Earth. He is an assassin, and his world gets rocked when he can’t do the job he was hired to do.
We first meet Earth in Ivory White (this is definitely one of those series that’s best to read in order), and he comes off as a grumpy guy who keeps to himself. He’s created a family with the misfits he’s taken in, but even they are kept at arm’s length. We get to see a tiny bit of his softer side in Prince, but let’s be honest who doesn’t have a soft side for Fletcher!
But y’all the way Earth is with Virgina…..swoon!
Virginia is Neo’s sister. She’s paralyzed from the waist down, but she longs for more in her life than the same routine she’s found herself in at the Tower. I love Virginia. She is kind, loving, and so strong. She sees the potential in everyone. She longs for love and a fulfilling life and boy does Earth deliver! They are perfect for each other. Earth is so protective of V and I am here for it! They love each other something fierce and truly see each other in a way others don't.
This was a fantastic Rapunzle retelling. Honestly this entire series is so unique and I love every installment of these modern fairytale retellings.

RE-READ JULY 2023

I just got done re-reading Prince, so I had to read the next book in the series.

🔸 Anti-Hero
🔸 Disabled heroine

”Loving a villain is not easy.
But you know what would be harder?
Not loving him at all.”

*******************************

I honestly wasn’t sure I would like this book. Earth, the hero in this story is the villain from book one - Ivory White. But this is in KU, so I thought I’d start it and see if it caught my interest. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. And I LOVED that the love interest was Virginia (Neo’s sister, also from book one). She’s a paraplegic. I’ve never read about a heroine that was confined to a wheelchair. So we have this dark character and this light character. I loved how different they were. Yet perfect for one another.

”She chose me. In spite of who I am and the foul deeds I’ve done. Even if I never kill again, I will always have the heart of a killer. She loves me. And now I wouldn’t just kill for her. I’d die for her too.”

I see some future books that could possibly come out of this story …. the beast character from the Tower and nurse Emogen and Earth’s brother.

As a side note… While I’m a fan of the covers for this series, I don’t think this one accurately depicts this particular story.

There once was a girl who was told she’d never walk again...but a girl doesn’t need legs to fly.

I have to be honest here. Earth was a character I loathed in books one and two of this series. I was going to avoid his story at all costs. But after seeing that Virginia was his love interest, I couldn’t skip this. She had my heart from the start and I wanted to see how she would get her HEA with someone like Earth.

Turns out, Earth and Virginia truly needed each other in their lives. They balance each other out like few other couples I’ve read about. The purity and goodness that simply radiates through Virginia calms, soothes, and heals some of Earth’s jagged edges. He’s still the huntsman we met in Ivory White, but we get to learn why he is the way he is. Earth is a wonderful protector and support for Virginia.

It was refreshing to read about a wheelchair bound woman who wasn’t insistent that walking again would be her ultimate dream. I feel that was a powerful aspect of Virginia’s story. What is her dream? What does she want for her future as opposed to what others want for her? She’s a strong, independent woman with her own voice who just wants to experience life.

I loved this retelling of the story of Rapunzel. This was a great addition to Ms. Hebert’s House of Misfits series. I’m looking forward to Beau’s story!!

A modern rapunzel retelling. We meet Earth and Virginia in book 1 & 2, Earth is a hired killer who was sent to kill Ivory White ( heroine of book 1) by her stepmother but he couldnt as his best friend Neo fell in love with her. Virginia is Neo’s sister who became disabled after her an accident, she lives in a tower where she is taken care of but all she wants is freedom.

This book was insta love/ insta connection but so fun to read. A light rapunzel retelling but with a hint of darkness. Ivory and Neo’s story was Snow white retelling, and Earth was the villain of their story as he was sent to kill Ivory but he is the hero if this story as he shows Virginia that her disability does not represent her. A grumpy/ Sunshine love story, Earth had a rough childhood and he became a killer while Virginia is all sunshine and roses. Their chemistry and connection was amazing. This series gives me vibes of the movie Enchanted. Earth was so protective of Virginia from the beginning, he fell so madly in love with her, it was amazing to see their journey. Both of the characters were lost and needed someone as they found each other.

This was an excellent addition to the House of Misfits series. I'll admit that this was the one book I was looking forward to the most. Was it my favorite? No, I still have a soft spot for Fletch/Ethan. But it was still a solid book that kept me up way too late to get to the end. It's definitely darker than the other books, but it wasn't too intense (although the Tower scene was).

Earth was the hero of the book, but he was once the villain if you've read Book 1. We learn about his childhood in South Korea, his family and get a hint of what he did as a huntsman before. But it's not until the end of the book that we really get a sense of his upbringing and just how dangerous things were and now are that he's decided to get out of the killing business. It was definitely shocking to hear exactly who was after him now. I didn't see that coming. It was also heartbreaking to know that his life was decided for him at an early age and even when he had the chance to run away and build a new life, he still thought his future was set based on past actions. Even though he was the villain before, I had to give the author credit for making him a lovable hero in this one. He had a soft spot for his family and especially Virginia. I honestly wouldn't have picked Virginia to be the heroine in this book, so it was a little shocking to start reading only to realize Virginia was his love interest.

Virginia was such a ray of sunshine. She was optimistic about life despite the fact that she was a paraplegic following the car accident involving her brother Neo seven years ago. I don't know that I could have been that same bright light in the world like Virginia was. She was incredibly kind to others and always compassionate. The acceptance she had for Earth and her ability to look beyond his criminal past was inspiring. She saw the good in him when he didn't see it in himself. Her sassiness was also pretty awesome. I loved that she spoke her mind and didn't let others run over her.

It was adorable watching Earth & Virginia fall in love. They fell pretty quickly and were fiercely protective of each other. The way Earth accepted Virginia and her disability made me fall for him. He didn't judge, he found ways to accommodate her in everything he did. He made her a part of his life and made her feel alive. She wasn't a girl in a wheelchair at that point, she was just Virginia.

The ending was cute and I look forward to seeing more from this duo.

Huntsman is the third book in the "House of misfits" series. It's an inspired/retelling of Rapunzel. We met our main leads, Earth and Virginia, in the previous book.

I was a bit scared of going into this story, because I haven't read a book by Cambria Hebert where our main "hero" is the villain. But I really loved Earth. I liked that he didn't shy away from who he was or what he had done. The small moments where he was tempted to go back to his old job made him more relatable to me. And you could really feel the way he changed throughout the story, how he started to open up to his own feelings.

The other part I really was scared of was Virginia and how she would be portrayed. Having a disabled character is also a bit tricky to do right but, I liked that we could really see the research Cambrie had done for this. Virginia wasn't defined by her wheelchair, she was a full character that I really enjoyed. Seeing her grow, standing up for herself, being honest with everything she felt.

Earth and Virginia's story was great. I loved their little adventures, how he listened to her and protected her, how she opened him up and let him feel again. They just had great chemistry and fitted so well. I couldn't get enough of them. The story revolves mostly around their relationship, but the relationship between Earth and Neo is also a big part of it. I really enjoyed how everything went down between them.

The only thing I didn't love was the sudden shift in the story, like it seemed a bit out of nowhere, the big conflict/fighting scene. I knew we were building it up but it really took me by surprise. I did enjoy it though. I liked how we got to know Earth's past and how things shaped it. The story wrapped up perfectly, in my opinion. I loved that they didn't" fix" Virginia. I was really scared they would.

I'm really impressed how Cambria Hebert makes these stories so different from each other. Each book so far has a whole different vibe going on and it makes it so much more interesting. Also, we have a lot of diversity in this series, which is awesome. I'm curious about the next book because it's a bit outside the whole misfit family.

March 2022 = 4 stars
March 2025 = + 1 star for a good reread
(review heavily edited)

This is my favorite book in the series.
It's the only one that I had any desire to reread. TBH, I'm not a fan of C.H.'s writing style; it's too flowery for my taste with too many metaphors and similes. I prefer a clearer, more straightforward style that’s easier to read and remember. Still, I enjoyed this 502-page book enough to read it twice because of the great cast of characters and endearing story.

👎 I dislike the new book cover. The picture of Earth that I shared below, matches his book description.

😊 Two tasteful sex scenes and minimal language.

But here's what Earth looks like:
Asian Guys With Long Hair | Guys with long hair ...

Neo, Virginia's brother, asks Earth to take Virginia to her specialist appointment. After that, they meet Ethan & Fletcher at Kismet for hot chocolate and then stop at a pet shop. By the end of the day, the MCs are in love. Even though their romance happens quickly, it feels genuine and heartfelt. At times, it was too sweet, but that added to the fairytale's charm. ✨

Earth's Tragic Story: Born into a powerful Korean mafia, his father was murdered, and his ruthless mother took control. Trained to fight and kill, he was expected to assume leadership. At 15, he rebelled and tried to kill her. To save his life, his older brother, Daeshim, staged his death and sent him away. Daeshim went to New York City and became a pickpocket. Thanks to help from Ivory's father, he was able to buy a bar called the Rotten Apple. He then became a contract killer known as the Huntsman.

Virginia's Tragic Story: Seven years ago, a car crash killed her parents and left her paralyzed from the waist down. Because Neo was driving, he blamed himself. He lived on the streets and stole to support her until Earth took him in. Now 21, Virginia has been stuck in a windowless care facility, with her life on hold while Neo searches for a way to help her walk again. Ready to move on, Virginia seeks love, independence, and a job. With Earth’s support, she learns she is complete and can find happiness despite her disability.

Aside from Earth and Virginia's love story,
this book is also about how Earth and Neo repair their friendship. Neo was understandably upset to learn that not only was his good friend a killer, but that he tried to kill Ivory, who Neo fell in love with.

And then there's a side of suspense, when Earth's past catches up to him. The Black Rose goes to New York and attempts to exact revenge on him, even going so far as to take away the person he loves most, his little spirited sprite. There's an exciting scene at the end, when Virginia's care center is set on fire and a showdown happens between friends and foes. Earth's evil mom .

Earth reconnects with his brother, Daeshim, who's an MC in the next book.

Earth repeatedly says he's a really bad man:
▪️He's a dark villain.
▪️He killed without remorse or regret.
▪️He lived and breathed nothing but hate.
▪️He has poison in his veins.
▪️Once a killer, always a killer.

It's all tell and no show. Neo says:
"Actions speak louder than words."
♥ Earth saved his dog from being euthanized.
♥ He opened up his home to three lonely misfits and made them a family.
♥ He only killed in the book out of self-defense or when protecting those he loved.

Virginia said it well: Yes, Earth considered himself a villain. Many people would agree. But to me, he was a victim. A victim of his childhood, a victim of the Black Rose. A man who survived the best way he knew how. It didn't excuse his violence or the crimes he committed, but now I could understand.

🤣 One of my Favorite Earth Quotes:
Hurting someone because they couldn’t feel it was a dick move, and I might be a villain, but I was not a dick.

This fairytale wouldn't be complete without a

Oh my! Wow, just wow! What a way to bring beauty to all! Huntsman was the third book in Cambria’s House Of Misfits series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I would recommend at least reading Ivory White first. It was dark and mysterious, but also filled with hope!

Earth was born into a family that he did not agree with. Getting out and making it on his own was what kept him going. Even though he thought he left his old self behind, would it catch up with him?

Virginia had been in an accident which left her wheelchair bound. To make things easier, she was in an assisted facility but it was it doing more harm then good?

I absolutely loved Virginia. Amazing work Cambria! I once again loved the fairytale aspect of it, I also loved the realness. It made the book so much better!

Earth🥰

I was waiting patiently for the Huntsman story. I’m so glad Earth got his HEA.

Earth is the mysterious and dangerous Huntsman who’s used to the cruel side of the world, Virginia is Neo’s younger sister. Earth just happens to renter Virginia’s life when she feels like she stuck at a standstill, he’s the only one to notice how unhappy she really is.

I love how this story gave you a glimpse at life from a handicapped person point of view. It’s not something many people ever consider, so that really touched me. It definitely still has a fairytale theme and is filled with the most amazing characters.

I loved this book😍
The thing I really appreciated was how Virginia’s life as a paraplegic was not glossed over or sugar coated, her struggles were real and sometimes sad but i loved her alot, she was brave and optimistic but not too much, and had the worries of every disabled woman (i say this of personal experience), Earth was so swoon worthy i loved how he was so protective and understanding of Virginia’s needs 🥰
How he renovated and made a flower shop for her was so lovely 😍 love me a guy can’t say no to his girl 🤪
I liked the author’s note at the end and i hope u write the other characters stories as well I’m very intrigued now. ( thank god u stuck with Virginia as the love interest and didn’t do the he loved his bbf’s girl plot)
This was my first book although i think it should be red order but i really wanted a book with a disability and I don’t think i missed anything but that can be me 😅 I’m really really excited for Beau’s story ( love a redhead+ a nerd ) and Emogen and the Beast even daeshim😍

I have Read and many of Cambria‘s books. This one like all the others did not disappoint. I loved every page of this book and could not put it down! It is been a while since I finished a book in just over a day that’s how amazing this one was. The characters were so relatable and you were rooting for them from start to finish. I just couldn't put this book down!

“Is that why you only give what you choose and withhold the same? Believe it or not, Earth, I am at your mercy. At everyone’s. The minute I speak out or ask for something someone doesn’t want to give, I’m left behind. Banished to my tower and punished until I come around to whatever it is they think is best.” - Virginia pg 182, Huntsman by Cambria Hebert.

To read this book, one should definitely read Ivory White first for backstory. I'd advocate for reading Prince too just because I adore that book and the series as a whole.
I think this book will live in my heart forever. I will admit that early on in the book, I sometimes struggled with the pacing. That said, the beginning was imperative to the end and hanging with it payed off. In short, the book was about a man running from his past and a woman yearning for a future. For me, this book was much more because Virginia, the female lead of the book, is paralyzed from the waist down. While I am not paralyzed, I am disabled and require a wheelchair/walker depending on what is required of me. I've never read a romance where the woman was disabled. So much about Virginia and the way she thought and felt in regards to love, romance, desirability, etc. were things that I have felt. Things that I have thought. Things I've only vocalized to my therapists and dogs. This book spoke to a very personal part of me and while it hurt me, I needed it too.

So personally, I loved the characters because Virginia felt relatable and Earth was what I would want. I get Virginia forgiving his darkness because for her, he was freedom. It worked vice versa too. The chemistry between the two was what I look for in a romance. Along with the great characters and the companionship of the ever growing group of Misfits, the plot was stellar too. As I stated, I did struggle with pacing early on but when the book started moving, I couldn't put it down. It was dark, it was full of angst (which is a favorite of mine), it was a story of redemption. I'll never not recommend this series.

I loved reading Earth and Virginias story. I now know what turned Earth into the killer he is. Where the book was lacking is how QUICKLY they fell in love… like seriously one day and they were saying they loved each other. I love being able to read a story and see them falling in love before they realize it themselves. I’ve read several of Cambria Herbert’s books as well as the rest of this book series, so I know her writing style seems to be a bit rushed as far of falling in love BUT it seemed to happen SUPER fast in this book. Otherwise though it’s a great read. I am excited to read the next book, Beast.

Book quotes:

I was a villain in most stories. Hell, even my own. But the way this woman was looking at me whispered I wasn’t a villain in hers. How I want to be her hero.

Anger is never without reason, but seldom with a good one. It’s true everyone thought the Huntsman was a villain, and perhaps he was. But even villains had their reasons, for weren’t villains actually just victims whose stories had never been heard?

“I don’t have a hero,” I replied. “I have a villain.”

I went into this book fully intending to skim it, but the final conflict really kept me hooked… The writing pisses me off, but the author does a really good job creating a conflict and ending it while still leaving you wanting more

The way they perfectly set up the beast story, like i didn’t even realize it at first even though it was super obvious, but regardless I am super curious and excited for that book since they’re characters we’ve only just met in this book. I’m glad we got to meet Emogen in this book bc I really do like her

And Omg I’m so excited for Beau and Daeshim’s book, esp bc no romantic interest was shown between them here, and it’s so funny how jealous Ethan got over Daeshim’s interactions w Fletcher, those scenes made me laugh so hard at the end

But yeah, writing style (and poor word choice for sexy scenes) aside, I remember why I really liked this series bc the conflicts are top notch >>>

Also the whole Neo being jealous of Earth thinking he was secretly in love w Ivory and that’s the real reason why he couldn’t kill her was interesting, like it even got Virginia wondering but he shot that idea down very clearly hahaha

Light and dark collide

A unique fairytale retelling
The Huntsman's soul is as dark as night. Virginia's is as bright the sun. V's light is infectious, and as hard as the Huntsman tries to keep his distance, afraid his darkness will snuff out her light, he finds himself drawn to her...like a moth to the flame.
Trapped by her injuries, our fair V longs for a life beyond the tower. When circumstance bring the Huntsman to her door, our trapped damsel experiences a breath of freedom. Desperate to protect her, to fix her, to rid himself of his guilt for his part in confining V in the tower, Neo spills the Huntsman's darkest secrets hoping to halt her quest for freedom and acceptance of her condition.
Can V's light survive the dark? Can the Huntsman step into the light? Or is our fair damsel forever trapped?

I loved so much about this book. I love that Earth got his redemption story. I love that Virginia didn't need to walk to be happy. I loved this opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine love story from beginning to end.
There are so many beautiful moments between these two, who in many ways saved each other. They fit together so well that I feel in love with this couple.
I highly recommend you read Ivory White first. There is so much background info in that book that pertains to this story.
I love what Cambria Hebert is doing with this Misfits series and I can't wait to read the next book.

Earth. Oh Earth. What can I say about you. Gotta love the villain with a heart of gold. The Huntsman brings Earth (our favorite assassin) and Virginia (Neo's innocent sister) together with explosive chemistry. Virginia is a parapalegic dreaming of independence and freedom from the Tower. Earth gives her that by listening, understanding, and letting her be her own person. They defy the odds stacked against them and bring their family closer. I freaking love this book. I love this family. I can't wait to read the next ones.

Oh Earth…you lovable, flawed “villain”. He grabbed my attention from the start. That grumpy, growly always does.

He is the anti hero that Virginia needed to escape her tower. All she wants is to love her life the way she wants and her brother Neo - though under good intentions - has made that impossible due to guilt over her paralysis. And she is what he needed as well. These two are so adorable together and when dangers from his past come calling, he does what’s expected.

Slow burn but so worth it and the way the author showed limitations and didn’t give a miraculous cure was perfect.

I have such a big soft spot for reading about physical disability, there's always such tenderness and sensibility but those end up being the strongest characters.

Virginia was such a gentle but strong creature. The way Earth treated her with such compassion but understanding of her need to be her own person was precious. Cambria did good with this series, more people should be reading it.

The found family trope is the real MVP here. If that your thing please read this.

Meet Virginia

Oh Earth, a mighty heart beats strong under your tough exterior and Virginia is just the girl you need it to beat for! I adored every book in this series and pray author Cambria Hebert gives us more. Each was so unique, but the Huntsman was extra special. Do yourself a favor and binge read them all now.

Brilliant

This book was beautifully written with tender as well as savage moments. The Huntsman finds his love in the form of tiny young woman who is wheelchair bound. They both have issues plaguing them but find compromises and solutions in their selfless love for each other. This was an exciting and sweet rendition of Rapunzel.

Who doesn't love a great villian

I lived this story. V is such a positive person even with her difficulties and Esrth is a great guy under the villain exterior. It was nice seeing the other characters again and zi am looking forward to reading Beast.

Swoon!

I am a sucker for a villain and this book was it! The Huntsman was such a great read that I couldn’t put it down. I love the contrast between V and E. They’re connection is fire. I can’t wait for Beast!

Huntsman

No need to wait for Disney to finally have a story with a wheelchair bound princess- Cambria gave us the best one already. Virginia and Earth were so perfect- (and I loved the author’s note at the end talking about how this idea evolved) This series keeps getting better!
