I was fortunate enough to read an advanced copy of this book, first sampling a handful of beta chapters and then reading the ARC. This isn't my first dark romance but it's typically a genre I've experienced as part of other sub-genres, like thrillers and horrors, so I was intrigued to see what River did with the concept knowing their penchant for the disturbing.
"Beg for It" is certainly the spicy piece of unnerving fiction, focusing on Lila, an abused and withdrawn young woman who suddenly finds herself targeted by a stalker, one who happily punishes any many who even looks at her wrong. Abandoned and mistreated her whole life, Lila is strangely drawn to hers stalker's attentions and this only exacerbates when her admirer, Niko, abducts her and woos her with his knowledge of her likes and dislikes and promises to do anything to keep her happy.
Niko is clearly very disturbed and obsessed with Lila, to an unnerving degree, but his darkness and violent impulses seemingly match with Lila's untapped sexual desires. Together, they explore the limits of their sexuality and tolerance, sharing their pain and finding pleasure in the darkness in a tale that's part sadomasochistic fantasy, part kidnapping. Those who've suffered abuse or the machinations of a demanding partner may find a kinship in Lila, who gets a chance to act out her darkest desires, though I suspect River has a greater narrative in mind judging by the cliffhanger ending.
