I have, and it wasn't a place that bad people went when they died.
Hell was right here in Falls City, a place so corrupt that it's been forgotten by everyone that doesn't have to survive here.
Crime runs rampant in the Devil's playground, with children suffering the most. They needed someone, and who to better serve them than me?
I've survived what they're surviving.
I came out on the other side - almost. A part of me died when I was a child. Compassion and empathy were lost for those that were far beyond broken... too damaged to ever be repaired... too sick to be healed.
It's my job to put a stop to this disease.
I am the Deathbait Killer.
This book is graphic in nature and contains sensitive subjects, such as sexual violence, child abuse (sexual, physical, mental, and emotional), detailed retellings of childhood trauma and abuse, stalking, kidnapping, and extreme gore. The abuse of children is not romanticized, but necessary for the story. If you are a trauma survivor, please read at your own risk, as the subject matter may be triggering.
I read this one as so many of my friends had such high ratings and high praise for it. I think my review will disappoint many of them but even good friends can disagree on a book. I should note as well that this was a kindle read and my notetaking and such for reviews are nowhere near as good as when having a paperback in my hand.
My first issue is that I have a real hard time with extreme horror and more specifically splatterpunk genres. When the story is great it is often too short imo. Sometimes like here I think wow you wrote for about 250 pages and I could have easily cut off 100. So often its just not the right mix.
The premise of this book is pretty cool but I almost dnf'd it. Again not dnf it was the wise choice as the last few chapters are simply sensational and thus bring it up to 3 stars overall. Note I am in the huge minority here as the book has an amazing 4.79 star rating on GR which is like one of the highest I've seen.
This book deals with pedophilia and sexual deviants. Its focus is on our primary character known as Jas. We first meet her tucked away in a locked cabinet with rats and cock roaches to boot. Her mother is a piece of sh** and a drunken whore who sells her body to survive. She soon pimps out Jas as well and then Jas is sold off to one piece of crap as a sex slave. Jas dwells on her childhood experiences and how they affected her. I don't know what it was because I am sure in Jas' camp because as she grows older her main ambition is to lure such pedophiles into the open where she deals with them in very grosse and sick manners. Its just so awesome when a bad guy gets what they deserve and lets face it you can't get any more bad than a pedo. So I loved the retribution aspects.
What I did not like was how many times Jas relived her childhood experiences. I think the writing was ok and I get why the author might want to show the true despair in Jas but that's not what I ended up feeling at all. Somehow it got monotonous reading and re reading the same abuse she suffered. Like I get it already. Perhaps it was me not really wanting to deal with those issues but like I said I don't think what I read was written well enough to invoke the feelings the author was likely trying to get out of me. It was also weird because the chapters would break up - from reading quite a bit about Jas hardships to going elsewhere. I would have to go back a paragraph or two often when that would happen as I was like wtf, what just happened, where are we supposed to be here?
As Jas' hunt for pedos continue she befriends a rich detective known as Felix. She uses her good looks and sex to develop a sexual relationship with him so as to use him in her hunt for pedos as that is his area of work on the force. The relationship that forms between the two is quite cool except for the one part. I spoke to my wife about this as of late I have developed a new reading style when reading many female authors sex scenes. Like here they were detailed and lengthy and they so totally bored the crap out of me. I read over pages at a time as reading the sex scenes was a total waste of my time as they bored me to death. I told my wife that men and women sure see sex differently and I'll leave it at that. This new reading style of skipping paragraphs and pages is a life saver. Like the sex is just their for flare so if its not flaring you just fn skip it!! It is so unimportant.
Jas befriends an accomplice in Ivan who teaches her how to box and shoot. In the end Jas is a lethal fighting machine. As the story builds to the end Jas has a chance at killing the person who first drugged and raped her when she was a mere nine years old. The story line between the two is awesome and I think at one point everyone will clue in to certain aspects of it. The author develops a world of rich and savvy people who run Falls City and exploit children. Ivan and Jas are set on taking this empire of dirt all down. Again I had my issues with this book but the ending is just so fantastic. Jas really shows the deviancy that can be caused by all the abuse she has suffered. After what I call the true ending there is a sidenote ending which is a bit corny but I'll let it pass and was ok with it.
Again in my mind this could have used way way less sex scenes. Could have used less dwelling on Jas' experiences of abuse and been scaled down and so fast paced and killer but it is not like that at all. Way drawn out in my mind but man what an ending. The last 4/5 chapters play out exactly as how I would have wanted it written throughout.
Also all the friends who praised this were mainly women so maybe our genders come into play when reading this one. Not sure but I did notice the former. Again many many trigger warning come into play here but I don't believe there is any animal abuse. Three stars, this one was saved by the final bells :)
DEATHBAIT [2024] By B. Bennett My Review 5.0 Stars
This book was a recommended read from one of the most considerate Goodreads friends I have been privileged to meet and get to know. She did not steer me wrong that is for sure. This novel fires on all cylinders and will not disappoint the most discriminating aficionado of extreme horror. The writer has been on a seven-year hiatus and is back, which should mean good things for her fans. I perused some of her earlier work and it is as dark as dark can go.
In this story, we get to know Jas, meet Willow a few times, but spend most of our time alongside a killing and mutilating machine known as “Deathbait” to the authorities. This is about a black child who is born into poverty, and to a mother who did not want her because of the color of her skin. The child suffered all of the indignities and atrocities your mind can conjure, and then at the tender age of nine she was raped and used sexually for her pimp’s pleasure, and her little body as a commodity to be sold and bartered whenever the occasion warranted. There is no doubt that cases such as the one that is described within the book really exist. Perhaps the real horror is that all too frequently cases such as the one Jas relates is rampant in downtrodden and criminally controlled environments in large cities nearly everywhere.
This book is not restricted to the sickening and heartbreaking abuse of innocence. It shows the other side of the coin. A child who is born into the fire of hell and is hurt and abused in all ways possible may grow into an adult who hates, incapable of feeling or empathy. In the novel, such a child morphs into a killing machine and feels a moment of peace each time she annihilates a pedophile from the world. The author issued appropriate “Trigger Warnings” thus it is unnecessary to expound upon the extent of the acts which are carried out by the self-professed avenger called “Deathbait”.
I enjoyed the book in the sense that I am not opposed to vigilante justice, and if I were to endure the horrors imposed upon Jas AKA “Deathbait” I could not be responsible for what I would do to my tormentors and those men who abused and destroyed the lives of little children like me.
This book is non-stop horror, but for interludes where Jas masquerades as Willow and cultivates a police informant of sorts. Their encounters are invariably sexually explicit, and no coercion is involved. I was a bit surprised that Jas could reach a point where she was able to enjoy sexual experiences in an essentially ordinary manner. There are some plot twists which I will avoid since I would be in “spoiler” territory.
This is an action-packed tour de force that does not pull any punches. The author forces the reader to feel the sadness and the utter hopelessness that these children are subjected to by sadistic minders when they are shunted down a chute into the hell of human trafficking. The extreme horror that Jas wields for the child predators is described in excruciating detail and should please fans of extreme horror.
My friend wondered about a film adaptation. That could happen albeit I imagine that some censorship would be entailed. There is a film “Chained” directed by Jennifer Lynch that approaches a similar topic with seriousness and a hell-bent for leather attitude. It is about a young boy kidnapped by a pedophile and tortured, ultimately released into society, the question being will he follow in his tormentor’s footsteps.
I want to give this book a hundred stars or more...it deserves a whole sky full of them. Just Wow...this blew me away...it brought every emotion possible to the surface and many more I never even realised I had. Don't get me wrong this book did have some extremely brutal and bloody scenes that made my eyes water and my toes curl!!
I was truly riveted to this story, it was so bloody good...I wanted to read it fast but at the same time I needed to take my time to digest the content, the characters and the whole book, it drew me in with it's hooks and claws and held me there without the fight to pull myself away.
This honestly has to be one of the best books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading...it was so well written with a story line that tore me apart and left my heart in shreds. It was hard to read at times though...with some very graphic bits that may offend some readers...so just tread carefully!
B. Bennett deserves all the recognition she can get for this awesome book.
5 of the Biggest Brightest Shiniest Stars from me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This story will stay with me...most probably forever ❤️
Jas has lived such a tragic life for as long as she can remember. The woman who was supposed to care for her didn't. Instead, she showed her a life of pain. She was hated for being a different colour, tortured and worn down. One day Jas escapes and makes it her mission to help the most innocent like she wished someone did for her. Jas goes on a wild ride to seek the real monsters and take them out one by one.
From chapter 1, you can feel so much pain. The life of Jas is traumatic and you really feel for her. I loved that instead of becoming this meek woman, she flips her trauma into something positive and tries to help the innocent one way or another. Bonny has a beautiful way of writing and you definitely feel so much in this. I loved how this pulled out so many emotions out of me. I enjoyed how strong Jas was and trying to feel love instead of hate.
There are characters you love and some yiu hate throughout the book. So many damn emotions! The killings and torture were done well also. This was beautifully written and deserves to be read! I'm excited for more from this author
Deathbait is book that I think everyone needed, but no one really dared to write. With shades of the Alaskan Avenger, Jason Vukovich, Jas sets out to make game of those that have wronged her in childhood, and to avenge the new innocents that were subjected to the same brutalities that she once was. The tension was palpable before each and every strike, the violence was exquisite in detail, and the damning consequences of being a monster trampled for their misdeeds was satisfying.
Bennett spares no expense in the gory details, but understand, this is not written for shock value, no matter how unnerved you may be reading it. To me, the words are written with passion, vengeance, and the strong will to do right by those that never could for themselves.
I have to admit, I cannot recommend this book highly enough… The trigger warnings may seem daunting, but this book had a stranglehold on me from page one! As a survivor… I felt it easy to identify with the main character and her disdain for the “targets” of her anger, hatred, and even (what felt like) some level of sympathy for these individuals; hidden in small moments of reflection. Jas is a character I wish I had the courage to write a story about in its entirety. She s strong, driven, and albeit, sometimes a bit more masculine than some might recognize in themselves, but those things all come together to make the story even better and such a great read. Her story is written so well that I had to read it twice. Once for content and a second time slower and to really absorb what I was “sinking my teeth into”. Once again, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
The story is written in a way that I feel like I am inside of the FMC’s head. There are characters and events, life and death; but underneath and on top of that there is a the constant of unspoken words. The pressured, never ending thoughts of a mind so cluttered from atrocities with pieces of light woven through the dark. You know that feeling that if you let one tiny tear out that a dam will burst. That’s how this entire book feels. Like you’re on the edge of your seat trying to control the uncontrollable. It creates a feeling of justice and hope even through the thread of hopelessness and icy despair . This book was intense and unforgettable.
Wow.. this book is 10 stars 🌟 if it let me! Our Jas has survived so much trauma in her life.. starting from an age that no child should experience and from the people closest to her! But she grows into a woman who needs to feed those demons that stay with her.. and how does she feed them?? Introducing Deathbait! Please read this book because I promise you.. you'll feel every emotion this woman has towards the men AND women who harm children! This is filled with violence, and I loved every second! Oh, and the plot twists! Some hurt sadly, while other twists shocked me! Mind your triggers if you do decide to read.. unless you're like me and don't want any warning!
I’ve waited 7 long years for another amazing story from this author and the wait was so worth it. This author was my first splatter/extreme horror and to this day is still my ultimate favourite. This story is filled with so much extreme emotions, I could feel everything Jase was feeling. Filled with gore and strong scenes I suggest you consider reviewing the trigger warnings. This is worth a read and deserve a top spot in your reading list. Definitely my top 3 favorite story of the year.
Let's dive into "Death Bait" by B. Bennet. It's not every day you encounter a book with a female psychopath who isn't your typical white poisoner, no baby this book has a POC as the main FMC and it is perfection. Imagine that thrilling ride—and oh, what a ride it was.
First, a bit of housekeeping: this book comes with heavy triggers and warnings. If you go in blind, that's on you.
Now, let's talk about the characters. Jas, the fierce female lead, is an absolute badass and has my heart. She may not need protection, but I'd shield her any day. Ivan, her mentor, is the father figure we all need. Felix remains alluring and mysterious until the very end, keeping me guessing about his true motives. As for Dre and the underground NNG, they can all get lost.
The story follows Jas on her crusade against the world's worst predators. She "uses" Felix and battles trauma from her mother and past pimps. This book offers a sense of justice for anyone who's ever been wronged.
The unaliving scenes? Pure perfection. B. Bennet really delivered on the promise of taking a pound of flesh.
I have read every single book that this author has written. Deliverance for Amelia was my first book of hers, and it opened a whole new genre to me. I have waited such a long time for this new book, and she didn't disappoint! I connected with Jas, I felt her pain and anger at the men and women that hurt children. This book definitely held triggers for me, but it was so worth it. Jas did what so many survivors want to do. This book is an absolute must read if you like dark books! Definitely worth the wait!!!!
This book was absolute perfection! It was full of triggers, but I think the author did an amazing job of describing everything happening and taking you into the minds of the abused and feeling just how hurt and confused they really were. I've never wanted to be a main female character more than I wanted to be Jas! Everything she said and did is exactly how I believe those type of "people" should be dealt with. I was cheering her on through the whole book. Highly recommend you read this!!!
This book is highly recommended...impressive and sad
what a well-written story about a worldwide problem with sex crimes involving children. The main character in this book had a harrowing childhood and is out for revenge and does this in detail. You understand her choices and I just thought yess you go girl you got this. There were chapters that were a bit repetitive but I can recommend it to everyone.Read this book.
This was everything I expected from this author! I am a victim of abuse and I felt like I bonded with the main character. Jas is a power that I couldn'thelp but admire . The amount of detail and depth that this story has completely had me hooked from the first page to the last. I highly recommend reading this if you like a strong, powerful and driven woman who is a survivor.
Ohhh, the triggers. I was crying as soon as I read the first chapter. The feelings of familiarity made my heart break for Jas. It's one of the best books I've ever read. The gore and vengeance will leave you satiated. So many emotions reading this book. I absolutely loved it! Deathbait is perfection.
This book was sooo good. If the triggers don’t scare you this book is so worth it!!! I honestly felt like I could picture the characters in my head. If there’s one book i recommend this is it!!!! Amazing. Can’t wait to read more by this author.
I loved the premice for this. Who doesn't love a string, female vigilante right? I think I was expecting more gore than what there was. And perhaps a little too much self reflection of the MC for my taste but all in, a decent read.
Jas was one killer FMC. This one has some heavy topics. Do not take this book lightly but trust me it's something some readers need. The book was exceptional, and I loved the way the author did something I haven't seen in a book yet. I love Jas's character and the things she does to ensure others don't have to endure what she has. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and let me say when I say major plot twist, I mean major plot twist and not just one you get two. Just remember mercy is earned and she has none.
DeathBait written by the beautiful B. Bennett is a powerful story about Jas, a woman who turns her painful past into a mission for justice. The book is intense and emotional, with Jas’s strength and determination shining through. The authors writing pulls you in, making you feel every moment of Jas’s journey. It’s a gripping read that stays with you long after you finish.
My favorite part about this book is that the FMC took what most would perceive as a hopeless situation and she flipped the script. Jas was a victim of countless atrocities and yet she took her anger and her pain and she unleashed it on the people that deserved it the most. Although Deathbait is a work of fiction, it touches on so many subjects that I believe many survivors of abuse can relate to. This book is not for the faint of heart. There is blood and there is gore and situations that will likely make you uncomfortable- Good. Art is made to make you feel something. This is female rage.
