I dug this. The art, the scale, Hickman’s narration…muah! Chef’s Kiss. One epic battle between Doom & Galactus!! Ypu sure as hell don’t have to tell me twice to pick this one up!!

But ok, if I were going to be 100% honestso did Hickman actuually do anything especially mind blowing or novel or special?? Errr, no, not really, but with only 50 pages or so to work with, was anyone out there really expecting the next Ulysses? Didn’t think so.

But, but, BUUUT! For what it was ( which was a 50 page one-shot battle with Galactus) it was as much as anyone could have expected, and mayyybe a lil more?

Doom goes to his…DOOM?!??

Now tell me why I love the word “doom” so much? The fangirl in me gets downright swoony when superheroes (& regular heroes) put on a brave face even in the face of (seemingly)certain death. It brings to mind one of my ALL TIME favorite scenes in the movie Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers The good Ent Treebeard says “Come my friends. The Ents are going to war. It is likely…that we go to…our DOOM.”

Am I a Two Towers girl you ask? To that I would have to say OH HELLZ YES! I have one word for all y’all Return of the King stans: THE BATTLE AT HELM’S DEEP!

Or wait…that was 5 words 🤔

ANYWAY. This was a fun lil one off that I picked up bc of the Hickman name tag and I wasn’t disappointed. The art was GORG & I just absolutely ADORE the spreads with the epic battles where ALL the characters join up a la “End Game.” Now, would have liked a little more resolution? Of course. I’m a resolution junkie, even when it’s like some pathetic written epilogue at the end of a movie telling you how things turned out instead of actually allowing us to SEE, I will still always prefer something definitive.

I WAS confused about one thing tho…I remember Alex perez referring to Galactus as the only being in the MCU that doesn’t have other variants?? Which is cool in theory? But then is Fortnite cannon? Bc I remember Galactus killing a whole bunch of people in fortnight…which doesn’t make sense…?!

Ugh, I hate when the MCU’s threads start running amok and getting tangled & not making sense!! It can be way too much for my tiny brain to remember! So in this particular instance I’m choosing to put these crazy thoughts aside and stop fixating on continuity & just take it for what it is—great art, some great character work for Doom and superheroes doing what superheroes do best… putting on their big boy pants and getting on with it bc the entire universe is counting on them!! Very solid 5 stars!

Mama likey.

A arte é simplesmente fabulosa.

EN I bought this comic for one very clear reason: Jonathan Hickman.

He is probably my favourite American comic book writer — yes, even above Jeff Lemire.

In this story, Hickman once again delivers something very much in his style: deeply philosophical, exploring the end of things through Doctor Doom, at the conclusion of the battle against Galactus and the destruction of the universe.

The artwork is simply stunning.

Not a bad little What If-? type tale of Doctor Doom, Valeria Richards and HERBIE trying to stop Galactus destroying the universe. Also featuring half the Marvel stable of characters in cameos (including Howard the Duck, in case you were worried he’d been left out).

When Jonathan Hickman writes a non-canon Doom story, things just bound to get pretty compelling.

"Living on borrowed time...

The clock ticks faster..."

Starting off with fascinating lines as above, got me off guard for a while. Sanford Greene's artwork has rightfully captured the bizarre emptiness of space.

The plot is not much of a groundbreaking one. But Victor coming back from death and the father-daughter like conversation with Valeria Richards is so brilliantly put by Hickman. We, the comic book enthusiasts have always enjoyed the arrogance, brilliance and stubbornness of Dr Doom. In this one shot giant-sized issue we get to know some unknown angles of Victor's philosophy.

Valeria Richards has shown immense willpower and smarts to get back her Uncle Doom. The tag team of Doom and Valeria looked so neat to me.

The question here is, what's at stake here? You guessed it right, the Universe. While all the heroes are finished off by Galactus and after devouring the energy of countless planets, the Universal Constant is going for it.

We see a hungry, out of control, mad Galactus here. His quest for such a destructive journey is unknown.

The script has been written so brilliantly. In the vaccuum of space, the action, adventure of Galactus and Doom is well crafted when it comes to an overall Comics experience.

Hats off to Jonathan Hickman and Sanford Greene. Comic book readers who are well aware of Marvel Comics stuffs, specially Fantastic Four, Doom, Valeria, Galactus and the basic heroes, I would highly recommend this issue to you people.

Jonathan Hickman is a genius. Specially the last few panels write-ups were absolutely memorable.

A rather sympathetic, nihilistic and apocalyptic "What if?" With Doom and Galactus. Well written and entertaining, but above all magnificently illustrated by Sanford Greene with Rachelle Rosenberg’s help at colors .

I wanted to give it 5 stars...it lost a star for being a one-shot that leaves on a cliffhanger.
Doom and Galactus should battle in the issue or make this a miniseries...

Controversial opinion: I did not like it.

I probably just didn't 'get it' I'm sure, but it was very confusing to me.

Like, I followed the story I think but it still seemed like there wasn't a lot of point? There was no fluctuation of emotions - I really just kept waiting for things to become clear and they never really did.

Artwork was pretty banging but also too messy for me.

It just didn't suit my tastes at all. Think this one was a little over-hyped.

I say this as someone who isn't a big fanboy of Doom. I think he's a great villain but not "the greatest" like many think. I'm sure this is influenced by the fact I don't like FF and I grew up much more of an X-Men fan. With that said, this is an AMAZING one-shot well told, if simplistic, story. The art was incredible. The whole book was just beautiful. The colors by Greene & Rachelle Rosenberg perfectly complement the otherworldly space landscape, creating a truly immersive experience that sucks you in & never lets you go. I enjoyed the personality displayed by Valeria and the last thing she said was touching. I only took half a point off because as a one-shot it really didn't go anywhere and Doom's entire role was basically just rehabbing while Valeria gave a narrated flashback to catch him up to speed. The story goes deeper into the relationship between Doom & Valeria Richards, a complex dynamic that Hickman developed during his previous Fantastic Four run. Their dialogue & interactions are perfection, making them one of the most compelling pairs in Marvel Comics. I would 100% read an ongoing Hickman series focused on these two. But regardless, it was a great book, a lot of fun, and one of the best looking single issues I've seen in a while.

Fun-one shot.

Doom is one of my favorite comic books characters and I have barely read anything with Valeria, and yet I liked her character just as much as Doom in this.

Jonathan Hickman & Sanford Greene’s one-shot is a stunning work of storytelling, w/ artwork that will leave you breathless. From the opening pages, it’s clear that Greene’s visuals are going to be something special — the cosmic landscapes, epic fight sequences, & grandeur designs for Doom & Galactus are simply awe-inspiring. The colors by Greene & Rachelle Rosenberg perfectly complement the otherworldly space landscape, creating a truly immersive experience that sucks you in & never lets you go.

But this was more than just a pretty book.

While the plot itself may not break new ground, the character study is thorough & thought-provoking. It’s a book on the scale of something Doom himself would be proud of. This is a must-read for fans of Doctor Doom. Hickman & Greene created something truly special, & I would love to see more collaborations between them in the future.

Fans of Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four and Secret Wars runs are well versed in his knack for writing Doctor Doom, Marvel's most iconic villain. Here he teams up with artist Sanford Greene to deliver a one-shot self-contained Doom story. Greene also is credited with the story, so it's very likely that the story is crafted around whatever Greene wanted to draw. And in terms of sheer scale, Greene really delivers the goods.

The story is centered around a final showdown between Doom and Galactus, with Doom himself seemingly the only hope for existence. Opening with a jaw-dropping shot of Galactus' rampage through the cosmos, we come across Doom's battered body floating in space. Nursed to health by Valeria Richards, the details behind the conflict is laid out in a lengthy flashback. The comic is fairly exposition heavy despite it's rather simple narrative, but the draw really just is Greene's artwork. The colors by Rachelle Rosenberg really stand out here as the panels are packed with vibrancy and energy, making the overall comic a visual feast. The details in Greene's pencils can be a bit too excessive at times though, with some of the action a little difficult to decipher.

Overall, a solid one-shot comic with fantastic artwork. Doom's narration is fairly garrulous for a story that doesn't really need it, but in general you'll get a fun Doom story out of this.

Doom endures!

I bought this in its printed version but I didn’t find that edition here on GR, so I had to use this Kindle edition that I found

This is a Giant-sized (64 pages) one-shot comic book.

Plot, Script & Art: Sanford Greene & Jonathan Hickman

Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg with Sanford Greene

Lettering: VC’s Joe Caramagna

Cover Art: Sanford Greene & Matthew Wilson

DOOM VS GALACTUS…’NUFF SAID!

I didn’t choose to buy this comic book but actually the guy in charge of comic books in the geek local store where I buy comics, he was the one who chose it for me, he told me that I need that comic and well…

...he was right!...

…in fact the comic book became in demand getting more value, which I don’t complain at all.

The first thing that got me off guard, it was that it’s not the Earth-616 Doctor Doom, since some Doctor Doom in the multiverse, where in his Earth, all heroes and villains faced Galactus…

…and they lost!...

…even space characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Corps, the Shiar Imperial Guard, everybody lost too!...

…only surviving Doctor Doom and Valeria Richards (that’s why it’s impossible to think about this Doom as the one from Earth-616.

Aaah! But Doctor Doom doesn’t survive…

…Doctor Doom endures! (his words, not mine!)

Galactus is on a frenzy hunger and everything in the universe is in peril…

…and obviously the only hope to stop Galactus is Doctor Doom, whom lost the first round but he is still alive (barely thanks to his magic knowledge), but Valeria Richards looks foor him and everything is set for second round!

Something that I found kinda unfair, it's that I noticed that this comic book got so many attention due the involment of Jonathan Hickman (which obviously is one of the best comic book writers in the industry, in special about Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom) and certainly I'm sure that he indeed collaborated in the project, but I think that the real "father" of this comic book was Sanford Greene, since you can notice that he was involved in all departments to make this comic book.

This comic book is highly recommended to any fan of Fantastic Four, in special of Doctor Doom, Valeria Richards and/or Galactus. Also, I have no doubt that this one-shot was published to start to make current boost to the characters of Doctor Doom and Galactus that both are expected to be relevant in the incoming phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is the first Marvel comic I've finished and I'm really impressed. While I've watched some Marvel movies, I didn't feel confident enough in my knowledge of the current comic continuity to jump into a longer run of comics that might be more involved in the current plot lines- so I chose Doom because it's a newer one-shot (I think it's a one-shot, but I wouldn't be opposed to more issues) that would give me a taste of modern Marvel comics without confusing me with references to previous issues.
While I assume Doom is a kind-of "what if?" continuation of another arc (I recognized both Dr. Doom and Galactus from other media, but was unaware there was a link between them), it works perfectly fine as a stand-alone in my opinion.
Moving on to my actual impressions of Doom:
The art was absolutely stunning, with bold shading and splatter affects on the edges of panels that never felt intrusive or out of place. The art helps give the story a sense of gritty but grand scale, even within the short length of this single issue.
The exposition doesn't bog down the story, even though most of the issue is spent filling the reader (and Dr. Doom) in on what happened previously, because the events leading up to this are explained via pretty natural character dialogue. I use the term "exposition" loosely anyways because the illustrations accompanying the explanation of how we got here are so captivating that it feels personal yet immense

Overall, I really enjoyed this comic

I rag on and rant about Marvisney a lot, hey, it’s warranted. They’re a brutal excuse for a comic book publisher these days with their ‘variant covers that mean more than stories' approach. That said, credit must be given when it’s due and this was f&%$ing great. Simple. Classic. Organic Marvel. Hickman and Sanford crushed this outta the park and it didn’t even have a real ending. This is Example A of how when you let iconic characters shine on their own without making it about you or your company's BS it will be magnificent. You can tell if a Comic Book is great if it truly transports you out of your world and into your imagination for the brief amount of time it takes to read it; this did just that. It’s only one issue but it’s a glimmer of hope that, maybe, just maybe - oh who am I kidding, Marvisney’ll keep printing poop . Full take at:

This comic was on my to be read stack since the first printing came out back in May 2024, to the point it got so buried and forgotten about until it came time to reorganise and sell a small chunk of my collection to make some space for new releases and I found this book unread and waiting for me.

Firstly and most importantly, the artwork provided by Sanford Greene, plus the colouring by Rachelle Rosenberg and Sanford Greene is mindblowing, the art and accompanying colours make this single issue a work of art.

The story while having a somewhat open ending, remains strong, fun and high stakes. Overall this reminds me of a chapter of Dragonball Z or something, very epic, pages of power ups but also, your favourite troubled FF duo 😂

Oh the whole, if you love modern comics, one shots or epic comic goodness, OR just love some Hickman. Absolutely worth your time and money.

This is entirely a Sanford Greene joint, plot and art. Hickman is just along for the ride, providing words and name recognition that grabs readers' eyeballs.

Greene gives us a story that could redefine Galactus, provided the tweaks stick. Galactus has been a whipping for too long. We now have a Purple Planet Eater that's a legitimate universe ending threat.

But I digress, this is a Doom story, and it features the one person who knows him best, his goddaughter Valeria. They get to spend quality time together.

This was released as a one-shot, despite its oversized page count and price, I could swallow it as a one-time purchase to spoil myself. This was a comic worth the cover price.
