Along the back roads of Virginia lives a family with a craving for human flesh. They dislike outsiders, especially city folk. Anyone who visits them will soon discover their own dark side, and what they'll do just to survive...
From author Trevor Firetog, comes the story of the Cains and the innocent "sinners" that they torture and consume. They are psychotic, they are insatiable, they are hungry, they are the Cains.
Trevor Firetog is a dark fantasy and horror author from Long Island, who has a fondness for the eccentric and outlandish. When he is not writing his blood-soaked prose, he is usually writing and directing for both the stage and screen. Like his page on Facebook, or connect with him on Twitter @TrevorFiretog
Generally i'm into intricate novels full of deep characterization and plot up the wahzoo. However every once in a while...i'm in the mood for balls-to-the-wall scarefests full of gore and non-stop fright.
That is exactly what we have here and in the best way possible. Meet the Cains: a family of hungry cannibals. In this we get 3 short tales of their terror. As I said...it's down and dirty. Within the first two sentences we move into a very vivid scene of violence and it escalates from there. Think a great slasher flick of a film. Along the lines of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the Tobe Hooper, one of course.)
My only gripe would be I would have enjoyed a full length novel to delve into the Cains...but that's just personal taste. Besides...we're only seeing the very surface of this new and virtually untapped author. What we have is a great sign of what's to come in the future. The next Clive Barker...Peter Straub? We'll have to see...and I can promise, after this, I'll definitely be following his work.
Very fast paced. The author wastes no time getting into the blood and gore. I do believe that with more editing (due to the many errors I found) and more creative process this could make a great novel.
This reminded me of a couple movies, like Wrong Turn or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I will say that for a trilogy of very short stories, it is a great start.
I look forward to reading more of Trevor Firetog's work and hope that one day he will come back to "Back Roads" and bring it to full life with a full novel.
Thank you for the chance to read your stories Trevor and good luck with all your future ventures.
Bloody, gore filled book about a family of cannibals that live in the woods along, you guessed it, a back road. This is a one sitting read because it's almost impossible to put down. I read it in two sittings, only because I was interrupted by company. For short stories I would give these and A+++++. Especially since I was disappointed to have the whole thing end. Trevor left one tiny opportunity for this to have a sequel, and I really hope he goes for it. Only next time, turn it into a novel. SK fans should love it!
Firetog does not disappoint! I've read his short stories and have been anxiously awaiting another work of his. This novella delivers everything I've come to expect from him. The Cains are truly frightening! I loved how the "mark of Cain" has followed through the generations and how they thought they were justified. Even better, the story was complete. It ended at the perfect point. There were no questions about what happened next.
I can't recommend Back Roads enough. It's everything I've come to expect from a horror writer. By the time I was done the book, I was looking over my shoulder for the Cains! Keep an eye on this author! He's making his mark on the horror genre.(
I was dying to get my hands on this book and when I saw it went down to £1:93 on amazon I bought it, I must say I was expecting a lot more from this book, it's a short story and gets right into the gore and violence immediately, it's so quick that you don't get to know the characters, the story is good, reminds me of the movie wrong turn, it's a trilogy of 3 very short stories about the cairns, a family of murdering cannibals, for me it had potential had it been made into a full book and not 3 quite mindless, quick scenarios, which is why I scored it 3
