Can a mix tape mend a heart broken after twenty years?
When a song sticks in your head, do you ignore or hit replay? At eighteen, Matt and Chad fell in love. At twenty, they scored a number one hit with their band Euphoria. By twenty-five, the pressure of a rock star lifestyle proved too much and Chad escaped into a haze of drugs and alcohol. Fame twisted love until only pain remained. Seeing no other choice, Matt closed the door on his heart. Twenty years later a mix tape offers Matt a second chance. Does he dare risk another heartbreak to perform one last time with the lover he's never forgotten? Will the New Year's Eve reunion concert provide the closure he needs to finally move on with his life, or will the new year allow him to rewrite the ending of their song? Subtle innuendos--impossible to ignore.
This story is also available in Mixed Tape Series Volume #4.
Z. believes in soul mates, love at first sight, and overcoming all odds to find happily ever afters. Born in Upstate NY, Z. Allora and partner have spent the last fifteen years together traveling across the United States, the Middle East and Asia. These travels provide the inspiration behind many of the detailed settings and characters throughout Z.'s work. Z. received a Master degree in Psychology and Bachelor degrees in both English and Philosophy. (though Z's editors would probably question the English degree). Z. is both a writer and a huge fan of M/M romance as well as Yaoi. It is said the pen is mightier than the sword. Z. thinks all writers and publishers of M/M are promoting equality, since everyone deserves a happily ever after.
Boys, boys, boys.... you grabbed me the moment you made out on that couch, then you put me through the wringer when you got famous and excesses and misunderstandings split you up. Finally, twenty years later you pulled at my heartstrings as you both realised that you were meant to be together. I sighed at the mix tapes and melted at the swoony kiss ... but you kept me dangling right to the satisfying end!
Sex, drugs and rock and roll!! Its all here and its packed into a fairly short story but I never felt short changed at all. If you love your angsty, sexy rock stars, then I reckon this one will get your juices flowing. I know it ticked all my boxes!
I loved Z Alloras Dark Angels and I loved this! I know I'll be reading Matt and Chads story again. Now I'm on to Made in China: The Great Wall. More rock stars, more sigh-worthy angst and more hot enjoyment! Yum!
Budding musicians Matt Evan and Chad Devon discovered early that the road to success is filled with many pitfalls. Sex, drugs and greedy managers were all too accessible to the young talented naive Matt and Chad.
Subtle Innuendos is part of the Mixed Tape Series Volume 4. The poignant plot highlights the emotional cost of fame. The characters are appealing, as well as believable. It was their enthusiastic interest in music that first attracted Matt and Chad to each other. Matt and Chad’s friendship evolved into a mutual love that lasted a lifetime even though they spent years apart. Music, along with fond memories, re-ignited their love that had refused to die.
Z. Allora has created an incredibly moving short story that I enjoyed immensely.
First of all, that song has been cycling through my brain since I read this. I finally got rid of it and when I started to write this review, here it is again! Adam Ant in all his glory. But I digress.
This story is told in back and forth flashbacks between the present and various points in the past of Matt and Chad. While I am not usually a fan of this type of storytelling, I felt it worked very well here. The author’s way of weaving the thoughts of the past into a flashback of the past made for a smooth transition.
Matt and Chad fell in love in New York in 1986. They were best friends before that, but this was the time Chad shows Matt the goodness that is Adam Ant and also the time they were both brave enough to admit what they felt for each other. Their first time is awkward, funny, sweet and “totally bitching”. Made me smile, that did.
The two are in a band together called Euphoria and it is both the best and the worst for them. They get to do what they love – music – together yet the pressures of making it big definitely take their toll, especially with Chad. It all adds up to their break up and it was so sad. I did wonder what kind of rehab counselor suggests to an alcoholic that he can have one glass of wine.
Now, more than twenty years later Matt thinks there is a gesture by Chad when he receives a mix tape. He’s never fallen out of love with the man who hurt him. Now there is a possible reunion tour of Euphoria and what will happen?
Matt has an amazing friend in Paul because that man is a saint for putting up with Matt!
There are a few edit issues through the book, such as “specular” (spectacular) and “goanna” (gonna) but nothing that ripped me out of the story. I would have liked a bit more fill in on the years between then and now – we really don’t get to see what has been going on (especially with Chad). This is a second chance story that worked for me.
I absolutely adore Subtle Innuendos by Z Allora. The blurb does cover the basics, but it doesn't really do justice to this beautiful story, but to really get the full impact, you neef to read it for yourself. Anything I add would be a spoiler, and I just can't do it.
The is a character driven tale with a solidly smooth flowing plot, and characters that are so vivid and true to life, that you can't help but cry at their pain, and cheer at their truimph. This story packs the power and punch of a much longer book into only 69 pages, and leaves you thinking about this tale long after you finish reading it. The men are hot, the sex is hotter, and the combination is definitely enough to melt the page. The backstory lays a solid foundation and the story itself is told in a skillfull blend of flashbacks and present day.
The author's writing style is eloquently simple, original, and concise. She is able to deftly weave so many heartfelt emotions into her story that I actually felt them myself. The story has a HEA ending with a surprise twist. I absolutely LOVE this book and couldn't find anything to dislike about it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and would happily recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, but VERY satisfying way to past the time
Would have worked better as a novel rather than a short story. It would have given the plot a bit more time to play out whereas this seemed very rushed and the characters all came across as asshats.
