When a young woman is at the wrong place at the wrong time, she becomes a person of interest in a murder investigation.
Maddie Baker just wants to make ends meet. She gave up her school librarian career to return to her hometown and take care of her elderly aunt. So when she starts making Uber runs to supplement her barista job, she never dreamt she’d not only drop a man off to his murder but be labeled a person of interest in his death.
Detective Noah Langley is looking for a fresh start in a city with a lower crime rate and a fraction of the population of Memphis. It’s just want he needs to recover from a nightmare that left him severely injured and his teenage mentee dead. The first murder since he’s arrived in Cockamamie is a chance to prove to his boss and himself he should be there.
Noah doesn’t have many leads, but the few he has all tie back to one person: Maddie Baker. She doesn’t seem the type, but the last time he presumed someone was innocent he nearly died. Has Noah lost his instincts? Because if he can’t trust his gut, it might be time to turn in his badge.
Blind Bake is book one in the brand new series, Maddie Baker Mystery by Denise Grover Swank. I loved this book. These two main characters are people we can’t help but to love. A strong as heck heroine who also has such a soft heart. And a damaged hero that won’t let anyone in.
In the last three months, Maddie Baker’s life has completely changed. She left a job in the city she loved as a middle school librarian to come home to Cockamamie, Tennessee to care for her beloved aunt that helped to raise her. Her Aunt Deidre has dementia and can’t be left alone. Maddie has moved in with her but still needs an income to pay her bills so she is working as a barista at the local coffee shop and also working in her off hours as an Uber driver. Maddie is thirty four years old and never thought this would be where her life would be at by now.
Detective Noah Langley is thirty seven years old and also never pictured this life for himself. He was a successful detective in the city, known for his dedication and closing his cases. But a bad judgment call ended up with him suffering a bullet wound. Noah came to Cockamamie for the slower pace, for the lower crime rate, never imagining that three months into his job there, he would be the lead detective on a baffling murder case. And his only suspect is a woman who he has more interest in than he should have. A woman who keeps turning up everywhere he goes and a woman who he can’t stop thinking about.
It’s Maddie’s Uber job that started all of her trouble. All she did was drop the man off, never imagining that she was dropping him off to his own murder. But now she finds herself a person of interest. And the case has brought back memories of her own mother’s murder eighteen years ago, a murder that was never solved. And to top it all off, the detective on the case is crazy hot! Too bad he thinks she’s a murderer!
This book was just amazing. I had no idea who did it until it was revealed at the end. And what an ending it was! The last thirty percent had me on the edge of my seat! Maddie was wonderful. She had so much on her shoulders but she remained dedicated to taking care of her aunt and proving her own innocence if she needed to. We get glimpses of Noah’s heart and it’s a big one. But for reasons of his own, he keeps it locked up tight. There are plenty of fantastic secondary characters as well. Noah’s partner, Lance. Of course, Aunt Deidre, and a town full of crazy residents.
The case in this book is solved but there is still an additional theme that will continue in the next book, Bake Off. I can’t wait to read it!
Fans of Denise Grover Swank have been eagerly anticipating this new series and it does not disappoint!! DGS is known for her kick-ass, relatable heroines. Maddie might be my new favorite! Maddie Baker is one tough cookie who has a huge heart and unwittingly gets caught up in a murder investigation. This puts her in the path of Detective Noah Langley, a no-nonsense grump who considers Maddie a person of interest. Of course this only adds to the sizzling chemistry between them! I already love the characters we meet in Cockamamie, Tennessee and I can’t wait to learn more about them. As readers have come to expect from DGS, this story has wry humor, fantastic dialogue and an intriguing fast-paced storyline that leaves you wanting more!
Blind Bake is an exciting new mystery series by Denise Grover Swank. She has once again created a world filled with chaos, lovable characters, and intrigue in a seemingly backward small town. Leaving her life behind Madelyn Baker moved back to her home town to take care of her aunt who raised her and now has dementia. Unable to find work as a librarian, she finds herself with two part time jobs so she can pay her bills. Leaving his hometown after a traumatic incident, Detectives Noah Langley moves to Cockamamie, Tennessee for a change of pace and to help the Chief of police improve the case solve rate of the police department. A murder results in Maddie and Detective Langley’s paths crossing. She is a person of interest, he is the investigator and there are many questions to be asked. Both Noah and Maddie are searching for the answers and not only to the murder of Martin Schroeder. Denise skillfully develops her characters’ personality and struggles with warmth, understanding and humor while they search for answers. Recognizing her attraction to Noah, Maddie states. ‘“I’m still a person of interest in your case,” she said softly, leaning into the doorframe. “Not to mention, I think you’ve got some things to work out, and frankly, so do I. Because here’s the thing, Detective Langley.” She held my gaze. “I don’t want to be your next mistake. We both deserve better than that.” Then she stepped back and closed the door.’ Blind Bake is an extremely well written story that left me wanting to know more about Cockamamie, Tennessee.

Maddie Baker was definitely not living her best life lately. Her uncle died. She left her job to care for her aunt with dementia moving back to the small town she vowed to leave behind forever. And, she unwittingly drove Marty the Man to his own murder while working her second job as an uber driver trying to make ends meet. Even worse, the oh so sexy detective in charge of the murder things that Maddie may have had something to do with it . . .
Noah Langley left his job in Memphis after a case gone terribly wrong almost took his life. But, he never expected his new job as a detective in a small town would lead to a murder case. And, the gorgeous Maddie Baker keeps showing up in the case everywhere she shouldn’t . . .
I haven’t read a cozy mystery in forever and blind Bake was a real treat! Maddie is an absolutely amazing heroine. Trouble seems to find her and her heart of gold. But, just because she’s willing to help those in need doesn’t mean she’s a pushover. She can definitely take care of herself even if she does find herself accidentally embroiled in a murder investigation as a person of interest.
I adored Noah as well. He wants to trust his gut as a detective, but was burned so badly on his last case that he’s left emotionally wounded and not sure of his instincts when it comes to Maddie or with trusting anyone. The homicide investigation also goes sideways quickly making this a really smart and complex mystery plot that readers will immediately get sucked into. And oh those sparks flying between Noah and Maddie . . . hopefully someday in the future they ignite!
Blind Bake was a phenomenal mystery with a plot and characters that readers can really sink their teeth into. I’m absolutely thrilled to know that a second book is in the works and that Maddie and Noah will be back in the future to tantalize readers with another mystery to solve as well as a chance at romance. 5 stars!
As the first book in DGS’s newest series, it keeps you entranced and will leave you wanting more. I was hooked from the start and read it in one sitting, until the wee morning hours. The story progresses at a fast pace, while also providing an in-depth backstory. Maddie is a fierce, kick ass woman, who has had some major heartbreak in her life. Noah comes off as a hard a$$, but deep down is just a man trying to deal with and move on from his own recent tragedy. The sizzling chemistry between Maddie and Noah jumps off the page, but can two broken souls realize what they might need in order to heal, is each other?
Denise can weave a mystery like no other and this book will keep you on your toes until the end. Per usual of Denise, there is a little bit of everything: sassy banter, dry humor, slow burn romance, fantastic character development and an intriguing story. I loved all the secondary characters and am hoping to get more of them in the coming books. I especially liked getting the dual POV of Maddie and Noah. It is always great to get into other character’s heads.
The only thing disappointing about this book was that it ended. I finished and my first thought was “No, I need more, now!”. Needless to say, I will be impatiently waiting for the next book in the series. Don’t miss out, get this book now!

The first installment of Blind Bake, doesn’t disappoint. I swear every chapter has a hook! I read as much as I could and avoided the real world and my kiddos while reading. The first novel in this series is a addicting, heart pumping, and emotional read. I absolutely love Maddie and Noah. I really enjoyed reading the duo POV. It was nice to see what each of them was thinking. I feel like the book has a little bit of everything. Great banter, complicated past, humor, slow burn romance, great secondary characters, and a good small town mystery or two. The story has more than enough to keep the reader enthralled, and I cannot wait for the next book. Be ready to meet the Butcheress of Cockamamie.
In this book you have a sweet, kick ass, heartbroken heroine. Plus a murder mystery, some kidnapping, and a handsome grumpy detective. There are some really amazing characters in this book. And I loved the duel pov.
There are some sensitive topics that could be considered triggers. Plenty of trauma to go around. But they weren't really described in detail.
This was an amazing opening to the series and I already can't wait for more. There's a good chance that Maddie Baker is my new favorite DGS heroine. I can't wait to see what comes next for her.
If you haven’t grabbed your copy, you are MOST definitely missing out!! I’m telling you that you NEED this book! I’m still so giddy! The best book hangover is when you’re still smiling about all the characters even after you’ve finished it.
I loved all the characters. There’s nothing better than a great cast of characters. I know Noah was to die for but can we just talk about Lance for a minute? 🥰 I wouldn’t be opposed to Lance and Mallory hitting it off. I loved Maddie. Her sass and sarcasm but her fierceness!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I made SO many notes while I read and they were all praise and fist pumps I felt like I conversated with her. 😂
If you’re one of those people that waits for a complete series, PLEASE for the love of all that is good in the world, I. AM. BEGGING. YOU. grab it now and hold onto it because THAT’S the ONLY way we’re gonna get more of this amazing book series!!!
3.5/5.0 First off, one must know that this rating is against Ms. Swank’s other books and not from mysteries overall. That’s because I LOVE this author’s books! Her Rose Gardner and Carly Moore series are two of my all-time favorite mystery series EVER. Her characters are warm, fun and relatable - oftentimes quirky, always with a bit of humor mixed with a whole lot of intrigue… So, anything she writes tends to hold a very high standard.
This specific book contains all of the above but just not as much. Some of the situations were a bit over-the-top and not as believable and I just couldn’t connect with Noah. He irritated me to no end, even though I understood his reasoning. Maddie is a typical, sweet and relatable character but she is the one whose actions just didn’t make any sense at times. Even so, the story is still a fun and easy diversion if one just wants to forget the world for a bit and enjoy a mystery to figure out.
I am so excited to have Denise Grover Swank start a new mystery series. She is the best in this genre and her writing style is unmatched.
Maddie Baker is back in her hometown after being gone for a decade. Things take a really bad turn and she becomes a prime suspect in a high profile murder case. The lead detective and Maddie have a contentious meeting leaving her sure she will be arrested for the murder. There are so many wonderful and interesting characters that you will fall in love with.
This is a great read that had me flipping pages to see what would happen next. It's one of those books that you want to read start to finish in one sitting. I love Blind Bake and highly recommend it.
Ya'll, we have a new book! A first in a series. You are going to want to put everything on hold while you read this book. Maddie is going to be my new favorite person. She can kick butt, have a smart reply and be funny all at the same time. Detectives Noah Langley is the new guy on the job. All he wants is a peaceful town. Some place he can lick his wounds from the big city life. Thes two are thrown together in a crazy murder that keeps Maddie at the top of the list of suspects. All she wants to do is take care of her aunt and be left alone. That sure doesn't happen. I have been waiting on this book forever. If you love a good mystery you are going to love this one. I couldn't put it down.
This is the first book in a brand new series by Denise. This book I couldn’t get enough of. There was definitely mystery and stinky sandwiches. Uber rides and murder, and shady cops.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I absolutely loved this fun mystery! Maddie has returned to Cockamamie, Tennessee to care for her aunt. She is a bit of a hot mess but attempting to get her life back on track after rough times. But Maddie finds herself right in the middle of a homicide investigation and labeled “The Butcheress of Cockamamie” Detective Noah Langley is new to Cockamamie and his bosses were expecting him to make big improvements to the town’s crime solved rate starting with the current murder case.
This story is loaded with fun and quirky characters, a suspenseful mystery and a few surprising twists. It was my first book by this author and I can’t wait to read more of her books, I am definitely a new fan! Blind Bake is the first in a new series and as such leaves quite a few loose ends that will only make the reader want more Cockamamie stories!!! -5 Stars!-
Blind Bake is the first installment in author Denise Grover Swank's Maddie Baker Mystery series. In this book, the author has two main characters: 34-year-old Maddie Baker, and 37-year-old Detective Noah Langley. A month ago, Maddie, who used to be a librarian at a Middle School, returned to her hometown of Cockamamie, Tennessee (not a real town) where she left 18 years ago after her mother was brutally murdered by an unknown suspect.
Don’t let the title fool you! This book was a little long at some points and told a good story with some twists and turns and it was definitely not what I expected. This book was good for a cozy mystery, It became a little unrealistic and almost foolish toward the end but, that is how these books usually are. I debated between a three or four star rating because there is a mystery in this book that is unresolved. I will probably read the next installment. Good for a quick read.
Firstly, Blind Bake has nothing to do with baking or a bakery. I must have seen the title and the short tagline, "The first book in a new humorous romance mystery series by Denise Grover Swank," and thought it sounded like it could be a fun read and signed up to review an advanced copy (that arrived the night before release day... Hopefully all the edits were fixed for the final copy).
Apparently, I missed the humor and the romance or perhaps those elements will be introduced further into the series. But Blind Bake was not the fun, romance, mystery I was hoping for. It is very gruesome, dark and depressing. Not what I wanted to read.
And a warning: while it's not a *gasp* leave you at the edge of your seat cliffhanger, the story isn't complete. There are still elements unsolved. And there is no resolution between whatever is starting with Maddie and Noah. It cannot stand-alone and there is no satisfying conclusion.
I think the characters are compelling—especially Maddie—but there are a lot of elements I wish I would have known were included in this book. Had I known, I would not have signed up to read an advanced copy for an honest review.
*Warnings: cliffhanger, murder, sexual assault, corruption, violence, attempted abduction, death of loved ones (past), caring for loved one suffering from dementia*
1.5 stars

This is the first book in a new series, and I am already counting down to September, when the next book is going to be released. Whilst this one doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, it certainly makes you want to read on about the engaging characters we have met.
This is a clever combination of a crime, an unsolved mystery and a strong attraction between the two leading characters. They are an unlikely pair, and when they may need to describe their meet, they may not use the word cute - but the circumstances are definitely memorable. They both have reason to be cautious about commitment, but fate has other ideas!
Maddie is a person who has had to change her whole life in order to step up and care for her recently widowed aunt, who has early stage dementia. Her return to the town where she grew up holds difficult memories, but she is repaying the care given to her by her aunt and uncle. We know very early on that she is a worker, she may not be able to find another librarian role, but work she must - which is how she finds herself giving an Uber ride to a man who is then murdered.
Whilst new in town detective, Noah is very dubious that Maddie could have done the deed, she is his only lead. And so the scene is set for a very entertaining, ill-timed attraction, one which they both find they cannot avoid, in spite of the complications. I think that the crime element of this book is done well, not too graphic, not too simplistic. Evidence is peeled away, giving insights into Maddie of what she missed seeing as a youngster, and Noah the realisation that this may be a small town but there is still a need for his services.
I am absolutely ready for the follow up book, not that I am trying to wish the summer away or anything!
To say I was excited for a new mystery series by Denise was an understatement. I was so pumped for this release and it did not disappoint! Right away the story of Maddie Baker living in little ol’ Cockamamie, TN drew me in and kept the pages turning. Maddie is a sassy, witty lady who loves her aunt to pieces and I loved every part of her character. Getting herself twisted into a murder investigation leads us to meeting Noah Langley, lead detective on the case, who is grumpy with a sordid past that has led him to relocating in Cockamamie. You can’t help but love him as you get to know him. I loved the duel POV between Maddie and Noah as well.
This series opener has everything I want in a new series - mystery and suspense, some twists and turns, intriguing backstories, great secondary characters to go with the leads, some humorous scenes intertwined with more serious ones, and a slow burn romance. Loved the bonus scene as well. Looking forward to diving back into Cockamamie in the future!
I am a big fan of Denise Grover Swank’s mystery books (well all her books really), and once again she’s created an incredible and unique world filled with interesting characters and page turning adventure!
We’re immediately dropped into the action in chapter one with Maddie and Marty the Man and the story maintains a great pace throughout the book. Maddie is wonderful! Almost like a mid-season character who drives you crazy at first but you’ve grown to love, except you skip the part where they’re naive and impulsive. She’s got an incredible head on her shoulders and I’m so excited for her development! Noah (and Lance) were realistically written, not overly charming but you still couldn’t help falling in love!
I appreciated the lack of steamy scenes, again it made the novel so much more realistic considering the timeline. And while I generally don’t love excessive cursing, it seemed to naturally flow in conversations and wasn’t overly cheesy.
Overall I think this was a really sophisticated take on some of my favorite DGS series and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I absolutely need more Maddie Baker! This is an exciting new series from such an amazing author. Denise makes the characters and the world feel so real that you are there. Maddie moved back home after breaking up with her boyfriend, losing her job, and her uncle dying! She is now taking care of her aunt that has dementia. She is working 2 jobs to pay the bills and happens to drop off a Uber passenger at his murder! We then get to meet the grumpy male lead, Detective Noah Langley. I really enjoyed their interactions. The main story line is the death of the high school chemistry teacher. There is a secondary story arc of the death of Maddie's mother. There is also a fun cast of secondary characters. Lance, a police officer, and Mallory, the best friend. I cannot wait for more of this series!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I first was drawn to Denise's writing talent when I downloaded Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes. I absolutely love her stories and characters. Her writing draws you into the world's of her stories. You feel like you're there with the characters and I love that feeling when I'm reading. Maddie's character immediately made me think of Rose Gardner, a lovable heroine that can hold her own. She doesn't need a man, her family comes first and she will put everything on the line to save those she cares about. Denise will always be one of my favorite authors.
I have been looking forward to the Maddie Baker series since the day I read that it was coming, and it did not disappoint! The first installment had so many elements that I love in a mystery series: fully-orbed characters that are smart and witty, with compelling backstories; a twisty plot with revelations parsed out a little at a time, moments of hilarity, moments of profound despair, a sparking love interest, and while the main mystery that begins in the first chapter is solved, there's a bigger game afoot and I have a feeling there is a lot we don't yet know. I'm looking forward to Book 2!

When Maddie Baker's uncle passes away she moves back to her hometown Cockamamie, TN to care for her ailing aunt. School librarians aren't in high demand in Cockamamie, so Maddie has to hold down two part-time jobs - a barista at the local coffee shop, and an Uber driver. She didn't plan to have her life thrown for another loop when she unknowingly dropped a man off to his own murder! She didn't do it, but good luck convincing the hot detective in charge of that.
Was I ever thrown by the title of this one. I know our main characters name is Maddie BAKER, but with the baking terminology I still thought she would at least work at a bake shop or something of the sort. Perhaps I've been reading too many cozies. Regardless of that bit, I still found this one to be a lot of fun.
There was nothing new here that hasn't been done before. In fact a few times I kept asking myself if I've already read the book (I obviously had not). Nonetheless, it had me captivated from start to finish. The encounters between the MC, Maddie and the detective in charge of the murder case, Noah, were a little strange at times, but both characters have some baggage to deal with, and I look forward to seeing where their possible relationship goes in the future installments. I always hate insta-love, so I like that these characters aren't perfect and have some growing to do. Bring on the mysteries.

Denise Grover Swank has done it again with her new series, The Maddie Baker Mystery. In "Blind Bake" we are introduced to Maddie Baker who has moved back to Cockamamie to take care of her Aunt Deidre who has demenstia. Maddie left a good job behind and a not so good boyfriend who basically took her life savings to flip a house.
Being back in Cockamamie is hard because she cannot get a job as librarian like she had before which leaves her working in a coffee shop as a barista and driving for Uber a few nights a week. One night she picks up a stinky and rude passenger who wants her to take him to a shady part of town. The next day, Maddie discovers that the stinky passenger was murdered. When she tries to tell what she knows to a handsome detective, he is less than happy to have her at his crime scene. It seems that Maddie has rename Detective Noah Langley, Detective Asshat and the shoe definitely fits.
As Detective Langley works works to uncover who is responsible for the murder, Maddie becomes a suspect when he learns she was probably one of the last people to see the victim. It also doesn't help that Noah has some lingering hurt from his last job that he cannot seen to shake and it affects his ability to trust.
Soon, Maddie is on too many people's radar and someone is out to get her. The question is will Detective Asshat get his act together before something terrible happens to Maddie just like it happened to her mother. The only way to get these answers and more is to read this new and exciting series from Ms. Swank.
This is my first Denise Grover Swank novel but for sure it won’t be my last! This is the first in a series where we are introduced to Maddie Baker (this is where Blind Bake comes from, it’s not a cooking themed book) and Detective Noah Langley. Maddie has just returned to her hometown of Cockamamie, TN to help care for her aunt. Maddie works as a part-time barista and also as an Uber driver, and it’s in her Uber job where she ends up as a suspect in a murder. Enter Detective Noah Langley and cue the fireworks.
Maddie is a former librarian but she’s no meek individual for sure. She kicks butt and takes names. Noah is also intriguing and I’m interested to see where his character goes as the series builds.
I read the audiobook provided by ValentinePR and Shannon McManus and Chris Brinkley truly nailed the parts! They were captivating, entertaining , and subtle where needed. I look forward to hearing more from them.
The humor, witty dialogue, and engaging characters are all worth coming back for. DGS has a new fan in me.
I love the small-town vibes, gives it a cozy feel. Maddie is an absolute sweetheart of a gem but also has a backbone to her.
Noah, I wasn't too sure of him at first, mainly his beginning interactions with Maddie, but I grew to like him. His reason for coming to town was rough too. Loved his partnership with Lance.
Ernie was definitely one of the best highlights, him and Maddie were sweet. Speaking of, love how Maddie treats the homeless and how she wants to help them, hopefully we see more of that!
The mystery was good, nothing too twisty nor did it fry my brain trying to figure it out, but it was still interesting.
Honestly, it's the type of book I'd grab and cozy up by the fire and read. Intrigued to see how book 2 goes!
OMG I can't believe I waited this long to read this book. I have loved everything written by this author that I've written, which is almost everything. I have to say I have a new favorite.
Maddie, Noah, and Lance have great chemistry. The mystery of Maddie's Mom's murder plus all the current happenings had me on the edge of my seat.
Having lived with a family member with dementia, I have a special place for Aunt Deidre and for Maddie for being a new caregiver and trying trying to take care of her aunt and provide for them both.
I can tell this is going to be a great series. The development of the world and all the amazing characters interact perfectly.
4/5 I received this as an arc from Valentine PR in exchange for an honest review.
Maddie moved back to her town after her life started talking to pieces. She’s driving for Uber to make some money, but now is wrapped up in a murder investigation since she unknowingly drove a murder victim to his death.
Noah is the sexy detective trying to solve the case and he won’t leave me alone. Theres so much tension, and angst between them 🙌🏻
This does end in a cliffhanger, but I can’t wait for the next book to see where this is going.
I'm so excited for this series! Denise Grover Swank has a way of writing that draws me in and captivates me! Her characters are so complex and there's always more than meets the eye with the story.
This book was definitely deeper than I anticipated. There are some triggering storylines around parental death and SA. I do think DGS did a good job addressing this and handled them with care.
I wasn't a huge fan of Noah in this one. (I've already book #2 and I can happily say he's been redeemed and I've fallen for him LOL)
Maddie is SUCH a good heroine! I adore her and can't wait to see how her story evolves. She's funny, she's caring - a wonderful friend and daughter/niece, and she's strong af. You can't help but adore her and root for her!
