At age 49 (around 1613), he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive; this has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, his sexuality, his religious beliefs, and even certain fringe theories as to whether the works attributed to him were written by others.
Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best works produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until 1608, among them Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In the last phase of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as romances) and collaborated with other playwrights.
Many of Shakespeare's plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. However, in 1623, John Heminge and Henry Condell, two fellow actors and friends of Shakespeare's, published a more definitive text known as the First Folio, a posthumous collected edition of Shakespeare's dramatic works that includes 36 of his plays. Its Preface was a prescient poem by Ben Jonson, a former rival of Shakespeare, that hailed Shakespeare with the now famous epithet: "not of an age, but for all time".

Li Othello, Hamlet e Macbeth numa cadeira da faculdade, já com 31 (este ano). As leituras autónomas dos três textos acompanhadas de versões radiofónicas da peça (BBC radio).
Escolhi esta edição sem saber que era maioritariamente focada em comparar os 3 textos de Hamlet -_-, tinha pouquissimas anotações a dar contexto, explicar referências e usos das palavras.
A peça radiofónica foi a de 1948, com John Gielgud (Hamlet), Celia Johnson (Ophelia), Sebastian Shaw (Horatio), etc. Gostei muito do Horatioe da Opphelia! Tambémgosteido Hamlet, o protagonistas, mas acho que vou gostar mais de outras interpretações. Quero muito ver as adaptações cinematográficas, comecei a do Mel Gibson, estava a gostar, fez-me rir, espero que as cenas da Ophelia estejam tão lindinhas ou melhores que na radio-play que ouvi <3.

It is Shakespeare, so it is five stars. Always. Since I had read the Pelican Hamlet and recalled, mostly, that it is the scholarly named Q2 (1604), I decided, being the completist I am, to seek out Q1 (1603) and F (Folio), which came in this handy Arden Shakespeare text. Not being a scholar, merely mad about Shakespeare, I can hardly be called upon to note the differences between the texts presented here and the text of the Pelican version. TO compound that lack, this book decidedly offers no comparisons and discusses (in the academic lead in bits and bobs (ha!) only the two versions presented herein. Which ultimately means if I am to adequately compare the three (Arden) versions I must acquire the other Arden Hamlet. Woe is not me, as who can possibly not want to get their hands and eyes and brains on more Shakespeare?!? I would prefer each version as its own book, which would make side-by-side readings easier (maybe? who can say? or maybe "who has that large a reading space and the requisite hands???") but I must get by with probably buying another of this book instead of flipping from 1603 to 1623 constantly. Anyway. I do love Hamlet, so two versions in one book is Hamlet to the 2nd power!! If one is so inclined, they can read my less whimsical review of Hamlet by finding the Pelican version on this site. If not, you've got not much here to go on besides my fawning over Shakespeare as a guide. Or warning. Whichever.

L'edició que vaig llegir era molt bona. L'onra és un clàssic que, com a tal, es conserva en el top de la literatura. Ja coneixia la història però redescobrir-la em va fer pensar més del que podria semblar.

What can I say bru. It's Hamlet... Some moments of this thing, some of the monologues, are top tier. I preferred my reading last year of Q1 (1603) to my reading this week of F (1623). Found it more understandable to my Modern English mind.

Always thankful for critical editions! I appreciate all the contexts (whole excerpts from various texts relevant to Hamlet!) and essays in the back of the book.
