“Why make something complicated when we can make it simple, long when we can make it brief, murky when we can make it clear? If a thought cannot be clearly stated, what value is it? It is said of our contemporary Sophists that they affect obscurity. I disagree: they affect profundity, which requires that they in fact be obscure. Shallow waters can seem deep only if they are turbid. Their arguments would be more convincing if they were clearer. But if they really were convincing, would they need to be so murky?”
