Gwynn has untapped desires she’s just beginning to explore under Fox’s delicious, twisted tutelage. Fox’s enemies are determined to bring him down and tear Gwynn from his grasp. But Fox’s own worst enemy may be both his past and himself. The time comes to find out how much Gwynn has taught him, whether he can change who he’s been, and whether he can ever forgive.
This spicy dark romance captures two points of view and has BDSM elements. For a content advisory please check my website.
Formerly an academic, I took up writing romance recently and quite by accident. In early 2022 the right elements conjoined—my love of villains, my taste for high comedy, and my pull towards strong women. Now I can’t stop cooking up plots and drawing new characters. Though I write mostly dark romance, I invariably weave plenty of reality into the fantasy. My preference for lone wolves, quirky characters, and intense plot results in what my reader and author friends call romance with teeth. I live in Berkeley, California with my dachshund-Chihuahua, Pooh-bah. When I’m not writing, I love traveling, cooking, playing piano, and cycling in the nearby hills.
The Smell of Fear by Kathleen Haley is the first book in The Senses Series. I received an Advanced Readers Copy for my honest review.
Oh my goodness - what a ride. I started this one blind - not having ever read any of Kathleen Haley's novels. What a surprise. I am hooked. So much so that I signed on for the next two in the series... The Taste of Deceit and The Feel of Possession - that is how damn invested I am in this whole series!!!
Think Bad Boy Billionaire and then add Alpha Douche Hottie - who has a thirst for inflicting pain?!?!? I got to admit - I hated everything about Fox fucking LaRoche right from his introduction (Christian Grey but like darker - more unhinged). Now add Gwynn Hughes - strong, independent, full of pure light.. This intense story of polar opposites was just that - intense, dark and so freaking spicy. But as their story unfolded over the pages - dear lord - something triggered and I was all for them both.. them alone and them together. I loved how Kathleen redeemed Fox through the POV chapters and how Gwynn eventually brought Fox to his knees for her.
Kathleen's style of writing is exquisite. I can not wait to get my spicy dark romance addicted paws on the rest of series. With that being said... For those who have triggers - please read them. I don't have any except maybe cliff hangers. I am here for all of it. Just like I am here for whatever Kathleen Haley has in the near future for us.
Well written and the story flows. Lots of diverse characters. A nice read if you’re looking for an introductory to BDSM and the thoughts and emotions behind the roles.
This was my first book by author Kathleen Haley. I loved it! The MMC was quite the AlphaHole ( my fave ). Bad boy billionaires are fun, but Fox was so much more! He knew exactly what he wanted & accepted nothing less. It was a delight to read as Fox fell for Gwynn ! Dark and yummy
Gwynn is a talented dance competitor and teacher. She owns her own studio and is passionate about her art. She has the misfortune (or good luck) of running into the MMC, Fox.
He happens to be an incredibly successful business owner and is hoping to be knighted soon. (This book takes place in London) However, he's had a string of bad luck with his public image, mostly due to himself, and needs to clean up his edges a little bit.
Cue Gwynn, who has the good girl image down and would be the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend to make Fox look good.
I really enjoyed this dark romance. It gave off some 50 shades vibes, but was much more adult in the content.
I loved how Fox and Gwynn push each other's boundaries and go the edge of each other's sanity.
A few themes you'll find in this book include: "Good Girl" Fake Dating BD$M Billionaire Dual POV
Thank you so much to the author for an ARC of this book.
This was a pretty fast paced book and I liked the FMC quite a bit. While I love a bad boy, I could not get over the second hand heart in the bottom of your stomach feeling after the public embarrassment that Fox put Gwynn through on multiple occasions. I guess that means it was good writing! I did like the character development, although I felt the side characters were very quick to forgive and forget. But on the plus side of that the FMC is 27, so I’m glad her friends and family give her the space to make her own decisions. Overall, I enjoyed the book and the writing.
Billionaire innovator Fox LaRoche needs to revamp his public image, and when dance instructor Gwynn Hughes accidentally crosses his path, he decides she’s the perfect candidate to pose as his fake girlfriend. However, Fox harbors dark secrets and habits that make Gwynn wary of him. As Fox strives to reform his persona, he faces a crucial choice: prioritize his image or his relationship with Gwynn.
Meanwhile, Gwynn begins to explore her untapped desires under Fox’s delicious yet twisted guidance. She must quickly establish her boundaries, as Fox insists on conducting the relationship—even a fake one—on his terms. His intense desire for Gwynn threatens to prevent a genuine connection unless they can navigate their challenges together.
Fox’s enemies are determined to bring him down and separate him from Gwynn. However, his greatest adversary might be his own past and self-destructive tendencies. The ultimate test lies in whether Gwynn has taught him enough to change his ways and find forgiveness.
This spicy dark romance features dual perspectives and includes BDSM elements.
For those who began their journey into spicy books with 'Fifty Shades of Grey', this book is absolutely for you. The storyline is captivating and completely engrossing. I found myself eagerly wanting to know how the story ends.
While I loved following Fox and Gwynn's story, I was a bit disappointed that Michael, Fox's delinquent brother, didn’t get the full consequences of his forceful and brash ways. I would have liked to see more repercussions for him. However, Kathleen did deliver a satisfying metaphorical 'F you' to him, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

This is the first book in “The Senses Series”. If you thought “Fifty Shades of Agree” was controversial and hot, well “The Smell of Fear” leaves it for dead! Fox is a Dom, an Alpha male and does not do traditional relationships. Gwen is a competitive ballroom dancer and has her own business plus a mind of her own. Fox reminds me of an extremely dark version of Christian Grey, but not the good public reputation. Hence Gwen, Fox needs a “fake” girlfriend for six months to improve his public persona. Where will the “relationship” go? Will it end after six months? So many questions
I could not put this book down, page to page, chapter to chapter - read in less than twelve hours! Nearly every page sizzles with hot wanton sex or the thoughts or possibilities of what the punishment will be? The book - I did not want it to end! A thoroughly enjoyable read from page to page, one chapter to the next - at times you are metaphorical “on the edge of your chair” wondering what will happen next. Overall, I would highly recommend this book and you will not be disappointed 😊
The Smell of Fear Kathleen Hayley Read 21 July - 22 July
When you mix charming, sexy, lethal and trouble in a pot, you see Fabian Fox LaRoche. Doesn't help that he is filthy rich, isn't shy about getting his hand dirty. He has his eyes set on Gwynn, his opposite, and finds himself craving more of her than what he initially envisioned.
What a series starter, honestly! I'm kicking myself for not starting with this but better late than never. Reading book 2 and 3 of the series that runs almost parallel by this one, I can vouch that the author has given a new edge to how an interconnected series can be written. I did not see Fox's cunning mind from my reading nook, he is equal parts dangerous and a mastermind in the way he has webbed himself around Gwynn.
Their romance is sexy, comes with ups and downs, lots of learning opportunities and I'm for once glad that it wasn't perfect or smooth sailing. It gave ample opportunity for character development and growth, eventually coming to a dreamy end as far as dark romance goes- where the heroine has no choice but to get married.
5 ⭐ 4 sexy, sadistic 🥵🔥 Warning: railroading Alphahole who has a sadistic streak but also has an endearing side to him 😉
**Trigger Warnings: Stalking, Sexual Assault, Emotional Manipulation, Physical Punishment, Blackmail**
**(Spoiler Warning: The following review contains spoilers about key plot developments)**
"The Smell of Fear" by Kathleen Haley is a captivating dark romance that delves into the complex dynamics between Gwynn and Fox, characters whose relationship is built on power plays, dominance, and an unexpected journey towards love.
The story kicks off with Gwynn trying to enter a club with her friends, only to find herself quickly ushered into the VIP section by a man in a suit. Here, she meets Michael, who gets handsy, but Fox LaRoche, one of the richest men in the world, intervenes. Fox implies that Gwynn allowed Michael’s behavior to keep her friends in the club, then offers her an exorbitantly priced whiskey as a twisted apology, which she refuses.
Fox's domineering nature is immediately apparent as he manipulates Gwynn into staying with him by threatening to ruin her life. Despite his unsettling behavior, there's an undeniable chemistry between them. Fox, a man with a dark past and questionable morals, wants to use his relationship with Gwynn to improve his public image while dealing with a scandal involving his BDSM club.
Fox's complex character is further revealed when he buys the building Gwynn lives in and raises her rent, then insists on taking her to dinner, asserting his dominance. Their interaction at dinner showcases the beginning of their power dynamics, with Fox pushing boundaries and Gwynn responding to his authoritative demeanor.
As their relationship progresses, Fox's possessiveness and jealousy become evident, particularly during a party where he publicly humiliates Gwynn. Despite this, their bond deepens, especially after Fox reveals his tragic backstory involving his father and his drive for revenge. Gwynn, too, has her share of familial complications, including a desire to adopt a young family member.
Their dynamic is further complicated by external threats and misunderstandings, such as a confrontation with Fox's brother, Michael, and a smear campaign involving Fox's BDSM lifestyle. Through all this, Gwynn and Fox navigate their tumultuous relationship, with Gwynn often challenging Fox's control while simultaneously being drawn to it.
The climax reveals deeper betrayals and secrets, including Fox's involvement in Gwynn's father's downfall and a blackmail plot involving Fox's brother. Despite these obstacles, Fox's genuine remorse and his efforts to make amends lead to a heartfelt reconciliation.
In a dramatic turn, Fox is shot while defending Gwynn from an attacker, leading to a moment of realization and clarity for both characters. Ultimately, Fox’s dedication and willingness to atone for his mistakes win Gwynn back, leading to their engagement and a hopeful future together.
"The Smell of Fear" is a thrilling exploration of dark romance, power dynamics, and redemption. Kathleen Haley masterfully blends suspense and passion, making this a must-read for fans of intense and provocative love stories.

I was given the opportunity to ARC read The Smell Of Fear. This was my first book written by Kathleen and it did not disappoint. I love me a dominant alpha male (Fox) who knows what he wants. We also get an extremely strong female character (Gwynn). We start off with a chance encounter at a club that leads both characters into an unexpected power play and fake relationship. With dual POVs, we get to experience both sides of the BDSM play which are definitely spicing! Fox is an extremely powerful and possessive person which is displayed by every action he takes. Gwynn is a passionate person who loves helping others and slowly comes to realize her desire to be submissive for Fox. Without giving any spoilers away we encounter some blackmail, public humiliation, betrayals and secrets. Of course we do end with a HEA so don't worry. Overall I loved the dynamic between Fox and Gwynn. Go check it out!
"You're going to corrupt me thoroughly”
"Don't clean up. I want to see your sufferings smeared all over your face."
"Think outside the box, Silver. That's what true living is. You've never had orgasms like what l've given you. You love submitting to me. And even though you won't admit it, you enjoy pain. So l'm not a moral man. So l've got a dodgy past. Who's to say you don't love those qualities too?"
"You're too perfect, Silver. I need to destroy you each time. Make you mine with my marks and the tears you shed only for me." I slam into her, drawing her whimpers. "You're made for me, and I'm going to turn you inside out before I'm done with you."
"Gwynn's moans could resurrect the dead and make them dance a tango over their own graves."
"Satan coupling with an angel. It's bound to be full of roadblocks. Yet you have some hell in you. And I have some heaven in me. We'll meet in the middle."
"You do realize most boyfriends don't kidnap their girlfriends, right?" I kiss the back of her hand. "I'm not most boyfriends, Silver. And you are certainly not most girlfriends."
Gwynn (dance instructor) and Fox (billionaire with a goal) start their relationship off with an arrangement- fake date for a bit to help smooth Fox’s reputation to the public. Fox needs to make a good impression in order to get knighted. Gwynn is perfectly regular, not to mention totally captivating in Fox’s eyes. What starts off as a solely public relationship begins to bloom in private. Gwynn feels a strange pull to Fox and cannot explain why she LOVES the way he is with her. Fox wants to make her HIS. Gwynn feels forced to comply to Fox’s every request due to his dominating presence and a fear of what would happen if she didn’t.
I absolutely love this story. Gwynn and Fox are just insatiable and their connection is amazing. I loved seeing how they both grew into themselves with each other guidance. They each learned things from each other that they would not have known without their relationship. The story is hot. It’s steamy. It’s also so sweet and heartwarming.
I know I already put some spoilers and I don’t want to completely ruin it- but the ENDING?!? AHHHH. The ending made me SOOOOOO over the moon for Gwynn.

I can't believe that I almost found an MMC who skirted so close to my non-existent triggers but the last third of this book redeemed him for me. If he had continued with his mannerisms, I might have actually been able to say I finally had a single trigger in a character in a book who I could read (I wouldnt be so triggered to be unable to read the content) but I would be consistently tethering on the edge of hating him and well, I don't want to hate my MMCs no matter how cold, dark and moody they are because that's what makes me love them but the MMC almost made me hate all dark, broody men because of his manners and to reel me back in to loving him at the end - I know this was exquisite writing and my heart was fluttering at the end. I cannot fault the writing, not a single sentence. However I am slightly annoyed with the FMC for putting up with his shit for so long, but damn, maybe I would have too if I was in her situation so maybe I'm a hypocrite! Damn, this book pulled a lot of emotions out of me. I'm ready for the rest of the series... I'm so ready!
Wow, never have I ever read something so intense. Gwynn is so soft hearted with a little twist in her when she finds out she enjoys punishments. Hard core Sadistic Douche Billionaire Fox controls her in a way that is beyond sadistic, and cruel he believes his own will and wants to break her. But, with very clever words from the author, as sadistic and strong willed as Fox is Gwynn manages to melt his hard, unbreathable heart. He would definitely give Satan a run for his money. Was so intense right to the very end.
Truly a must read. I have loved ever single one of the books within The Senses series. Start with The Smell of Fear and move onto The Taste of Deceit, The Feel of Possession.
Sadistic, passionate, strong willed, deceit, heartbreak, murder. No amount of money in the world can buy the heart and soul. But kindness can shatter it for free. @kathleenlotthaley has truly out done herself in this series.
Fox is a huge alphahole....the bigger they are, the harder they fall 😉 I love Fox and Gwynn together, all the spicy spice! This is the first book in a series and was my first read by Kathleen Haley. Well written and the story just flowed so nicely. Thank you so much to Kathleen Haley for letting me ARC read!
Having read 'Keeping You Captive' by Kathleen Haley, this novel goes in a very different direction. I love that she was able to go a bit darker with this novel. This definitely took me for a ride. The premise of the plot is about a villainous MMC who doesn't care about anything except self-image and wealth and getting his way. Every. Single. Time. While the FMC is the exact opposite, hospitable and kind and tries to see the good in everyone. The characters Fox and Gwynn clash, fighting to gain control and to lose it at the same time. It's a spicy read filled with BDSM and great characters.
If you are a fan of Fifty Shades Series, Temptation Series, and The Cross Series. Then this new series is right up your alley.
Except the FMC has more confidence and self-esteem and knows what she wants except of course when it comes to the bedroom. Gwynn just wants to hang out with some friends at a club, enters Micheal (we don't like him) , and enters Fox ( we like him). A lot happens in between all of the meetings. But you have to read it to find out.
I loved that Fox found himself, I loved that Micheal got what he deserved. And Gwynn found out stuff about herself along the way.
Alot of spice in this book. But it is the right amount. You still get all the story. I can't wait to see what happens in the other books. Hopefully, we're get to see what Gwynn and Fox are up to in later books.
@kathleenlotthaley Thank you for reaching out to me and letting me read your book. I enjoyed it very much, which this book was right up my alley. I can't wait to read books 2 and 3.
Loved it !! I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book. It's the first of the senses series and I will be devouring them all.
Fox our MMC is such an alpha hole, possessive, aggressive and all kinds of hot 🥵 Gwynn is the day to his night. She is a strong independent woman who sees the best in everyone.
Check your triggers, Fox is a Dom with a sadistic streak whilst our FMC Gwynn stumbles into his world and has no idea that he will take what he wants and make her love it.
The story itself was gripping, the tension throughout was consuming and the spice was tantalising.
The book became more of a page turner the further I got into it. *You know when you say 1 more chapter then I'll go to sleep....2 hours later 🫣*
I really enjoyed this reading this book. It was so hard to put down! I would recommend reading it, but if you have any triggers or possible triggers please read the warnings before the book!
I think the author did an amazing job writing this book. The storyline held my attention from page one. The spiciness was on point. If you blush easily then I don't recommend reading this one in public. The book takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. There were points I wasn't sure if I loved or hated the characters. You will have to read to understand lol.. I can't wait to read more from this author.
My fingers are crossed that Kathleen will make a book 2 of this because I already want more!
This book was a fast paced read for me and while I enjoyed it, it did take me some time to warm up to Fox. After meeting Gywn and deciding that she needs to be his for the next six months, they find themselves in a fake dating agreement that only seems to escalate the feelings they have for one another. And it definitely gets hot and heavy between the two of them! After some significant setbacks over the course of their relatinship, I did love the little bit of groveling we see from Fox.
Read this if you enjoy: grumpy sunshine, dark romance, BDSM, fake dating, secrets and family drama, dual POV
Thank you to Kathleen Haley for the chance to read/review an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐.5/5 (rounded up for rating) Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5
I’ve read a few books by Kathleen Haley and this was by far, my most enjoyable read. I’m a dark romance girlie at heart, so this was right up my alley. I’ve grown to enjoy Kathleen’s prose–her novels are so dang well-written! You will never be left wanting when it comes to descriptions and it’s almost impossible not to be immersed in the world she sets for you.

When billionaire innovator Fox LaRoche’s opportunity at knighthood is in jeopardy, he needs to find someone wholesome to help him clean up his image. When Gwynn Hughes unknowingly enters his line of sight, he’s decided that she’s the perfect fake girlfriend to fix any and all PR nightmares. But, Gwynn doesn’t trust Fox as far as she can throw him (which is nowhere), and she fears him like the devil incarnate.
Gwynn and Fox engage in a dangerous dance of wills when they embark on their fake dating journey. Gwynn realises she has untapped desires she’s just beginning to uncover and explore at the hands of Fox. Fox doesn’t know how to do anything unless it’s on his terms, and being in his orbit is like flying too close to the sun…Gwynn is enamored with Fox’s scintillating presence, and finding out hard limits under pressure doesn’t allow Gwynn to guard her heart like she thought she would.
But, will Fox’s all-consuming presence hinder their chance at a real connection? When lines between what’s fake and what’s real blur, will Gwynn and Fox be able to stand united against his foes? Since Satan has created many enemies and the dark secrets and unique proclivities he keeps threaten to be revealed at every turn, it’s an uphill battle to curate a palatable image for the world.
At some point, Fox has to make a decision on what’s important–his image or his not-so-fake relationship with Gwynn. Will he choose his image or his chance at love when he least expected it? It might turn out that Fox is his own worst enemy and while Gwynn may have brought him to his knees…it might be too late.
I really enjoyed following Fox and Gwynn’s story. Fox is someone you love to hate and hate to love, because even with all of his red flag behavior, you find a way to ignore the way the red flags blatantly fly in your face 😂 I don’t make the rules for dark, alphahole behavior! My only critique is with Fox’s brother, Michael, and how I wish all of his despicable behavior was brought to Fox’s attention so additional justice could have been served (it also felt like a missed opportunity for communication and trust to be built between Fox and Gwynn).
**Beware of the Trigger Warnings before you dive in** *Mild Spoilers Ahead*
The Smell of Fear had me in an absolute chokehold (pun intended). The story starts slower as we get to know the characters and their world, but before you know it you are IN IT! I ended up reading this book in 2 days staying up until 3am the first night and even contemplated pulling an all-nighter to finish it. The amount of twists and turns within the pages made it nearly impossible to put down.
When we are first introduced to Fox he seems to be an irredeemable devil (as Gwynn likes to call him) even with him saving her from his cad of a brother. As the story progresses, we begin to see his icy heart thaw and give way to emotions he believed he was incapable of feeling all because of Gwynn's influence.
Gwynn, on the other hand, is all heart. She cares for others deeply and everything she does is, one way or the other, for them. Her relationship with Fox shows her what she is capable of and how she has unintentionally denied herself certain desires because she had not been aware of them until him.
There is a line in the book that I must share because I cackled over it for far too long as it hit a little too close to home and I will give it to you with zero context: "At first, I am struck dumb. This is London, not Chicago." As someone from Chicago, who lived in the city for the majority of my life, I found this line to be uproariously funny.
The Smell of Fear has a strong BDSM flavor and follows a true grumpy/ sunshine dynamic. This book is also a true dark romance so make sure you check the trigger warnings before you proceed. As long as nothing on the list is problematic for you, you are in for a real treat!!!
This is amazing obsessed read has so many themes I love in my books like enemies to lovers, fake dating, out of convenience and so much more to enjoy! These two characters will have your attention till the very end it’s definitely an all nighter type of read I couldn’t put it down without constantly thinking about what’s going to happen next. The steamy scenes chemistry pull between these two stubborn heads are off the charts along with the action packed page turning events! It’s a great dark romance and everything I could possibly hope for I can’t wait to read more by this amazing author. I love how the main guy character never gave up and always made things interesting he for one thing met his march in this independent dancer. It’s suspenseful to see how everything will work out with all unexpected circumstances that come up between the secrets, crazy brother, danger, thoughts along with other things you’re have to find out for yourself. You don’t want to miss epic entertainment funny kinky read! I’m happy with everything overall in this book I was sure always on the edge. I can’t wait to read more of this awesome series I hope for more on these wonderful strong willed characters! It’s full of surprises with plenty of ups and downs by thank goodness it gets better and better as you read for yourself I don’t want to accidentally give to much away!
I always fly through Kathleen’s novels, and this was no different. The novel follows billionaire Fox LaRoche and Gwynn Hughes who are complete opposites of each other. Fox will stop at nothing to achieve what he wants, no matter who is in the way. He initially views Gwynn as an expendable pawn to manipulate in his plan to clean up his image. Gwynn is a feisty but sweet dance instructor with a heart of gold who falls into Fox’s web and submits to his arrangement.
Both characters, as well as the supporting ones, are very layered and jump off the page. Starting out as a necessity, their relationship gradually develops into something more, bringing its own set of challenges.
The story of Fox and Gwynn was an enjoyable and intense read. I enjoyed the dual POV as it gave an interesting insight into both characters and their careful development. The BDSM aspect of the novel was well written and coincided neatly with the plot – explicit scenes were not sprung in for the sake of it. Overall, it was a well-paced, tantalising read with a satisfying plot. It was the perfect book for me to pick up after a long day and relax with.
Perfect for lovers of: Grumpy x sunshine Dark romance BDSM Dual POV Fake dating Secrets and family drama
This book had me hooked from page 1. I lost track of time entirely while reading this book. Fox and Gwynn went through so much. Fox learned to be a better human being from the get go with Gwynn. From the first moment they met, these two were fated to be together. He demolished Gwynn’s parents marriage but he set about making it right because he knew that that was the ONLY way to break thru the wall he caused to be erected between him and Gwynn.
This book involves BDSM, Dom/Sub, and attempted SA.
The only thing that made me mad was the fact that Gwynn never told anyone about the attempted SA. BUT, it also made me think that not every SA is reported and some of the reasons why it’s not. In this instance, I have ZERO doubt that Fox would have either unalived his brother for this or beaten him to within an inch of his life.
There was so much that happened in this book that made Fox and Gwynn’s relationship stronger. It is not what society would deem appropriate but it is what it is. They are so happy in the end just being themselves with each other and that’s truly what matters!
I will absolutely not only read this book again in the future but also read other books by Kathleen Haley.

I received this book as an ARC reading in exchange for my honest review. Fox is dominating as hell and takes what he wants without a second thought and loves the smell of fear he’s the ultimate bad boy with little to no morale while Gwynn is his opposite in every way, she has a high morale and always thinks of others before herself. He’s written as possessive and hot as I could hope for.Fox is very into bdsm and even owns a club. Gwynn is a dance instructor who has the misfortune of meeting fox’s brother first and then fox swoops in and sees Gwynn as the perfect opportunity to fix his image to the public which begins their fake relationship which has a lot going on in the first month and it’s very hot and heavy and degrading. But I also liked how we see fox’s morale start to come alive and how Gwynn is constantly making Fox do things he’s never done. She inspires him to be better and he starts to want to make her happy. This story had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and was filled with so much angst. I wanted to reach through the screen and shake some sense into Fox at times but he definitely won me over in the end. The deep emotions this book betrayed had me feeling them deep down when I was reading. Highly recommend!!!!

Well, well, well!!! Mr Fox LaRoche.....nice to meet you!!!
Initially I was torn with my feelings toward Fox. I couldn't decide if I loved him, liked him or hated him...and these feelings chopped and changed so much during this book.
Gwynne is absolutely amazing! Everyone loves Gwynne. I love Gwynne! She is fierce, she is strong, she is determined. And she gives her whole heart to those she loves.
This story takes us on a journey of love, redemption, self-discovery, pain, fear, loathing, happiness, second chances...Fox decides that Gwynne will make the perfect fake-girlfriend to help clean up his image, especially after some not-so-good stories hit the media. Fox's douche brother, Michael also had his eyes on Gwynne, and will happily try to screw up their lives...
One misstep after the next, one bad news story after the next, one more lie, one more secret....will they manage to survive the tests they are put through?? The evolution of Fox during this story is amazing....you can see each time he makes a realisation about his life.
This was my first Kathleen Haley book and I devoured it. I was all in, right from the start. Her style of writing is exquisite, it draws you in and holds you captive. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series...
Mr. Fox can have control of me any day! I enjoyed the story of Gwynn and Fox. The banter, flirting, and the dom/sub scenes were hot! Fox thought he had this arrangement in the bag. He thought he wouldn't fall for her. He was intrigued by her from the beginning. It makes so much sense. The differences in their personalities and the fact that they were polar opposites of each other. Fox had to have control, was rigid, felt he couldn't love, and would do almost anything to get what he wanted. Gwynn was the life of the party, she didn't need control; and loved with all her heart. It was funny how Fox easily tricked himself into believing he wouldn't fall for Gwynn. I mean he nicknamed her Silver for goodness sake. He was so possessive from the get-go. I can respect that when he made a mistake with her, he owned up to it and fixed it. Silver mentioned a couple of times that Fox could read her like a book. Silver (Gwynn) genuinely was a caring person. She wanted to please everyone and wanted to make sure everyone was happy. Most of the time it was to risk her own happiness. This book had me gripped from the first couple of pages. I loved the dynamic between dancer Gwynn and billionaire Fox. Fox is dark, intense, vengeful, and radiates dominance and power. Gwynn is soft, feminine, sweet.... everything that Fox isn't. The duo agrees to enter a fake dating relationship in order to clean up his image, but along the way, the lines become blurred. The drastic difference between the two characters gave the story a great balance with the dark, with Gwynn's light shining through. The spice is very spicy!!!! The chemistry between them was electric and as a reader, I really enjoyed how well they flowed together. However, at times in the story, I became frustrated with Fox for his tendency to lash out when upset before getting the details of the situation. The situation between the families and the brother gave the story an extra intensity that kept me captivated. Overall, I did really enjoy this story. It was a great read. Can't wait to read more from Kathleen Haley.
The Smell of Fear starts strong and maintains its grip on the reader until the very last page. There's nothing premature about this book; it masterfully sustains tension and excitement throughout.
Fox LaRoche, the billionaire protagonist, is a character many of us would love to have in their lives. If you love dominate, strong no Fks given man. He’s not your typical billionaire—he doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty and takes pleasure in inflicting pain, both on the job and for personal enjoyment.
Fox initially wants one thing from Gwen to help his reputation , but as the story progresses, he ends up getting much more than he anticipated. Their dynamic is compelling; Fox is lustful, strong, and knows exactly what he wants, while Gwen is curious and willing to explore the depths of Fox's twisted mind.
The story has just the right amount of spice, mixed with BDSM elements, making it a thrilling read.
This book is a captivating must-read that keeps the reader on edge, eager to see what happens next.
