During 2009, Macmillan Books announced that Lane would be writing a series of books focusing on the early life of Sherlock Holmes. The series was developed in conjunction with the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lane had already shown an extensive knowledge of the Holmes character and continuity in his Virgin Books novel All-Consuming Fire in which he created The Library of St. John the Beheaded as a meeting place for the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who.

The first book in the 'Young Sherlock Holmes' series – Death Cloud – was published in the United Kingdom in June 2010 (February 2011 in the United States), with the second – Red Leech – published in the United Kingdom in November of that year (with a United States publication date under the title Rebel Fire of February 2012). The third book – Black Ice – was published in June 2011 in the UK while the fourth book – Fire Storm – was published originally in hardback in October 2011 with a paperback publication in March 2012. The fifth book, Snake Bite was published in hardback in October 2012 and the sixth book, Knife Edge was published in September 2013. Death Cloud was short-listed for both the 2010 North East Book Award. (coming second by three votes) and the 2011 Southampton's Favourite Book Award. Black Ice won the 2012 Centurion Book Award.

Early in 2012, Macmillan Children's Books announced that they would be publishing a new series by Lane, beginning in 2013. The Lost World books will follow disabled 15-year-old Calum Challenger, who is co-ordinating a search from his London bedroom to find creatures considered so rare that many do not believe they exist. Calum's intention is to use the creatures' DNA to help protect the species, but also to search for a cure for his own paralysis. His team comprises a computer hacker, a free runner, an ex-marine and a pathological liar.

Review from my 9 y-o son:

When I started reading this book, I thought it might be one of those books with too many words. I was not that interested in the boat setting at the beginning and then there was a long letter from Sherlock's girlfriend who didn’t want to be his girlfriend anymore.

But then the book got good. There were mysteries and séances and dead people and missing shoes. It had brilliant characters and villains. I like Amyus Crowe, the big American. His accent is interesting and you always know it is him talking. He is also much quicker at figuring things out than the others. He is very smart for an adult character - almost as smart as Sherlock Holmes.

My favourite bit was the second séance because it spent a long time explaining what was happening and how Sherlock Holmes knew what was going on. I’m not sure whether I believe you can talk to the dead or not. I don’t think I would say if I did, because this seems like the kind of thing people would want to argue with me about. However, it makes the book very interesting.

My dad thought I would like the book being set in Ireland because I am half-Irish and Dad says I have been to Galway. Unfortunately, I don’t really remember it. Sorry people from Galway. I do remember Giant’s Causeway and I would like Sherlock Holmes to go there because that is a brilliant place in Ireland, but that doesn’t really have anything to do with the story of the book. Sorry.

Overall, it was a very good book and you should buy it. You will learn new words. I learnt that a ‘folly’ is a building in a big house’s garden that has no reason for being there except to look good and interesting. For me the folly was the most memorable thing about the book – maybe because it has such a good name.

A dive into the spiritualism fad which took hold of Victorian England, and the world at large.

Great plots, exciting adventure and a whole lot of fun.

and another exciting adventure for young Sherlock Holmes - he has returned to Europe, and is now in Galway Ireland, where he meets with brother Mycroft -
together they are invited to the Quintillan estate with other representatives of the great empires of the 19th century - Sherlock will soon disclose a trickster, but the Paradol Chamber is still on the lookout for revenge - young Holmes is reunited with Virginia, but things are not well in his love world -
once more I detest the way Andrew Lane makes Amyus Crowe talk = Ah prefer, for I prefer - mah daughter, for my daughter - this is so unnecessary, we know that american citizens have an accent, so we don't need to readint it

Hmm, hard to review for me.
It was a fun, short, light and entertaining read.
Having that said, there were way too many fights and action scenes in it and I don't say that because I don't like them. I say it because it's about young Sherlock Holmes so I already know who will win the fights which randers them rather pointless in my opinion.
The logic behind the final puzzle piece felt a bit too fantastical and I was hoping the author would say something about it. Unfortunately he only apologized for his inaccurate depiction of Galway...which I for one didn't mind anyway 😔

Young Sherlock Holmes isn’t one for a quiet sit down and a biscuit. We join him at the beginning of Knife Edge, the sixth installment of Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock series, high in the riggings of a ship. He’s returning from China, after having been kidnapped and taken to Shanghai by the evil Paradol Chamber in the last book. Now he thinks he is coming home, but life just isn’t that easy for young Sherlock.

This time, and slightly unusually for the series, the story isn’t set up against a backdrop of factual historical events. Instead the old gang is based at a spooky old castle in Ireland, with smugglers’ caves, a one-eyed psychic who appears to have the ability to communicate with the dead, and a mysterious Dark Beast that inhabits the mists. With that set of ingredients it is simply not possible for an adventure story to go wrong.

Knife Edge is great fun. The villains are villainous, the mysteries are mysterious, and the tight plot sweeps you along whilst leaving just enough time for a budding detective to be able to join in. That sense of satisfaction when you can get to an answer faster than Sherlock is tough to beat.

Andrew Lane has said that he had fun writing the book because it reminds him of the Enid Blyton Famous Five stories that he used to read as a kid. The spirit of adventure in Knife Edge beautifully recalls the atmosphere of Blyton’s stories (though there is perhaps a tad more peril and murder in this). And of course, as with all good mysteries, both confirm the idea that if everyone thinks about the problem logically then the answer, however improbable, will be revealed. Sherlock would probably give the lashings and lashings of ginger beer a miss though.

After watched all the series of Sherlock Holmes, I brought this book to know much more information about this character and my first sherlock Holmes book too.

The "young" sherlock character is contrast to the TV series S.H. Young sherlock preferred more action rather than sitting in a single chair and thinking logical reasons.

Coming to the story plot S.H accompanied with his brother Mycroft as British Representative to participate in a bid for spiritualist whose powers have attracted the attention of governments around the world. Soon many events happened in the castle they were staying. A murder of servant, Attack on Mycroft, another murder, Mysterious castle, Dark Beast and so on. S.H moved all over the place to find details of these events and how solved it is the story plot of Knife Edge.

Happy to read about young Sherlock who is very different from TV series and his bonding with his brother Mycroft and his mentor Crowe and his love Virginia.

Overall a good book to read for those who watch S.H only in TV series. Waiting to read other 5 books in this series.

EHM EXCUSE ME WHY DID THIS SLAY SO HARD

I'm totally in victorian ghost mystery mood and I did not expect exactly this kind of story! I just wanted more young Sherlock Holmes content and I GOT BOTH SHERLOCK AND VICTORIAN GHOST MYSTERY! How nice(✿◡‿◡) I LOVED the Character growth, especially from Sherlock, Virginia and Matty. They're getting older i'm not ready for it Sadge

The Plot was again a bit predictable but I still very much enjoyed reading it! I'm still annoyed that Microft is such an asshole sometimes. Just treat your brother a little bit better for god Sakes and dont USE him for your benefits everytime you see him!!!!

But I'm happy to have the crew back again after the last book!! ≡(▔﹏▔)≡

About the writing style... its simple. But I don't have that much of a problem with it. The story is still creating a wonderful setting (and it's easier to follow along when you're cooking pasta while listernig to the audio book and the water is always overflowing because you only have a VERY tiny pot 🌚)

Another exciting book in this series! The foreshadowing of the cliff scene (iykyk) was imo the best part.

~content
Mild language (d-n, h-l).
A kiss.
Some violence, a murder, and a killing in self defense.
**note: Much of the plot involves a self proclaimed psychic. Two seances, both shown as tricks, occur. Discussion and such of various spiritualism elements. All is shown as a fake, though.

Illusions of Victorian charlatans exposed, some obvious. Boy dumped by first love, older flirt set on marriage. Villains Baron and Kyte return for exciting final chases and fights.

"I've just started a collection of my own .. The lesser spotted criminal" p 340. Sherlock, kidnapped by evil Paradol Chamber to Shanghai, gets off at Galway Ireland to join elder brother Mycroft. For Britain, he will bid against foreign government for psychic Ambrose Albano, hosted by black Barbudan Sir Quintillan Shadrach 50s, confined to wheelchair. The medium claims a stone from India in his left eye enables him to contact specific target. Sherlock searches under Albano's bed, examines evidence, debunks tricks.

Shadrach's daughter Niamh "pronounced Neeve" p 59 makes Sherlock trip and fall, racing over slippery castle rooftop. How can she "know" he needs the folly raised? She is tolerable only in small doses. Amyus Crowe, Sherlock's tutor, is the American representative. His daughter Virginia "looked over at him, and his heart broke all over again" p 131.

She is mean, cruel, unfair. She rejected Sherlock in tedious boring long 'Dear John' missive enclosed with the only one of Mycroft's many personal copies to reach Shanghai. Too chancy. "I don't think that your future includes children, or domestic happiness" p 6. She is one year older, crucial time of puberty, kissed him on cheek at departure. She decides his future, criticizes him wrongly - too young. She does not even wait six months, after "that year we spent together" p 4. Interlibrary service delivers series out of order, so Sherlock's sweet memory of her by campfire light is missing, maybe balances her nasty side here. No exact dates, ages, but twice "past two years" p 2, "two years ago" p 310 from book #1 first cross paths.

Servant Máire is frightened after seeing centuries-old infamous "Dark Beast". Next morning, she is found dead, shoeless, on path, face contorted in expression of horror. Then Quintillan is found stabbed, still in chair, at top of 3-4 story high folly tower made of strange porous rock, stones marked at four compass points. Sherlock explores underground tunnels, probably from long-ago smugglers, but does not tell anyone where he goes, what he sees or feels - "vibrating" p 163. Does he spend boring pages assembling a model p 279 because no codes in this book, need another clever demonstration?

As always I loved this! I loved how much more we saw with Mycroft and Sherlock’s relationship, the thinking and leaning towards the consulting detective we all know. Victoria and Sherlock hurt me so much but that kiss at the end made me smile so much. Also Matty!!! I missed my boy!!!

I wasn’t expecting the paradol chamber to be involved. I was however very suspicious about a few characters that I didn’t know who to trust 😂

The way it picked up quickly towards the end as well with Sherlock quite literally fighting for his life. Can’t wait to see what the next one has in store for me!

These books. These. Books.

I read them like they're crack and I just can't get enough. It was bad enough that these last two were only published in the UK and I miraculously managed a copy here in the US, but now, there are literally none left till the next UK books are published. I must wait. :(

As I've said in previous reviews, I absolutely love that we are continually seeing the foundation blocks for the character traits we will see in the adult Holmes we all know (martial arts, deduction, violin playing, etc). I assumed that Virginia would be the source for Holmes' eternal bachelorhood (bordering on misogyny), and at the end of Snake Bite, I was convinced that Virginia moving on from Sherlock would be the nail in the coffin.

But Sherlock had other ideas and the cliffhanger at the end of this book was awful. Not sure how I feel about it either. Like Matty, I was unimpressed with Sherlock kissing Virginia.

As for the mystery, I quite enjoyed the illusions and magic tricks that were the basis for this book's plot. I also liked how Sherlock is really starting to think about what he wants to do in life, and you see the beginnings of his obsessive personality in which he absolutely must solve a problem that is interesting to him.

When is the next one coming out?

- My good ol' friend Ableism is here again. This time, he strikes THRICE.
Yay!

- Virginia had little character already, but now she has the bits stripped from her, because now she is ~ a woman ~ and she stopped wearing pants like BOY, and wears dresses and worries about her future, because Sherlock is so unreliable, and she has to -think-about-her-future! At 16! If she doesn't marry right now, she will be a spinster for sure!!!
None of this feels logical or natural or like a logical progression from what we know of the characters. This happens, because it NEEDS to happen, and that's all.

- So there are two named women in the book who do talk about each other, but it's not plot relevant and we never know what they actually talk about.
'horses', said Virginia at one point and that's it.
But yeah, they're girls, and girls like their horsies, right...?
Ugh.

Mycroft never thought about

I do have the feeling Lane wants to go into the BBC Sherlock direction of "Sherlock is a sociopath" (which he never was, not even in the show. He was just an asshole) and needed some proof for Sherlocks ~dark~ side.
This is not dark. This is just a sign he can look at this from all angles. A sign of intelligence.
And intelligence has no morals. It just *is*. What one DOES with this knowledge on the other hand decides what kind of person they are, much more than just a thought. (why yes, a thought can be an indicator, but it doesn't damn you, I'd say. Or hope. Or both.)

-
-

- Mr. Lane, the Pinkerton's were not exactly good guys to say it nicely, I beg you, PLEASE,
I'm convinced he hates her! D:

Well, this book certainly had more potential than the rest in the series. For one thing, I liked that the plot was much more contained than the previous ones - instead of traveling through cities and countries, the plot was pretty much contained to one Irish castle. That downsized the suspect pool to the people in the castle, and made the reader feel more like a part of the plot, rather than just a viewer of it: much more reminiscent of a mystery novel. While this setup fell a bit short in its execution, I still feel the slightly less action-packed plot and the more gothic mystery vibes of the book felt truer to Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes stories.
Furthermore, I found the concept of using occultism and psychics as such a major part of the book to be very clever and amusing, being familiar with Arthur Conan Doyle's passion and unwavering belief in the stuff. He probably would have hated this, but on the other hand, he also hated Sherlock Holmes, so...

I have to question though whether Andrew Lane has ever met an adult woman, because at least in fiction he doesn't seem to know what to do with them. Because this series centres children, there are obviously parental characters, including mothers in it. Or are there? Out of like five children in this series, four of them have mothers who are either dead or dying! While Matty is only established as an orphan without ever specifying what has happened to his parents (as far as I can remember anyways) the three remaining mothers all either suffer/have suffered from unnamed illnesses or tuberculosis, and consequently just wasted away.
It is absolutely beyond my understanding that Andrew Lane has written this exact same plotline three times, with every mother he has introduced, without seemingly realizing that he's reusing the same plot nor what it insinuates. Clearly, in his mind, there are only two roads for women to take: either become a mother, and when your purpose is fulfilled, (aka you've had a child), die; or, become a bitter, spiteful, miserable spinster in the likes of Mrs Eglantine. I also feel it worth noting that with the exception of Matty, all the children's fathers are both alive and rather central to the plot.

Feels like self insert fanfiction written by someone who didn’t want to accept the un-macho-ness of Victorian gentility so wrote a Walmart version of Alex Rider that exposes how he wishes Sherlock Holmes was.

So for that, there is no reason for this character to be Sherlock Holmes besides name brand. It feels like Sherlock directed by Michael Bay. Also, something about the meta references takes away from the Victorian era immersion—the whole thing felt very modern, and not at all 19th century, and the author constantly winking at us with the “if Germany decides to take over the world they will certainly succeed!” These sort of comments (imo) just disconnects the reader from the historical context. I don’t mind meta-reference on occasion, especially in these contexts, but because it’s done too much it becomes noticeable. The characters do not talk or act like they’re from the 1800s. It’s painfully modern. I fully expected Sherlock to like open Facebook at some point.

Sherlock himself did not reflect his character at all. He’s a total blank slate in this, and besides that THE STRAIGHT CODING??!!Hilarious that it’s assumed Sherlock would ever get hoes. Doubly hilarious that the love interest has “purple eyes” like okay not-like-other-girls YA dystopian protagonist. There was a lot of international spy stuff that again, made this feel very Alex Rider, but while Alex Rider is creative and intense in it’s all bizarre events and villains, this just felt severely lacking in stakes. I’m only mad cuz I like Sherlock Holmes, and not all the ideas in thsi were boring. Most of them were, but not all of them.

Young Sherlock Holmes returns to his homeland - almost - brought to an Irish estate where a renowned spiritualist is to have his mystical powers auctioned off to the highest bidder, the bidders being representatives of the major world powers. Mycroft Holmes is representing his government in the proceedings, and Sherlock's old tutor, Amyus Crowe representing the US.
There are seances, murders, talk of a mysterious Dark Beast and a bittersweet reunion with Crowe's daughter, Virginia, and all move along at a good pace to what is meant to be an action-packed finale, though I thought it rather slow and a little confusing.
I have read a few books in this series, and they are very good YA historicals - my problem is that even though the character holds up as a clever, resourceful 19th century teen, I never believe that this teen is Sherlock Holmes. I also find the dialogue to be too modern - a lot of writers of period fiction, and Holmes pastiches, err in the opposite direction, making the language too stilted and formal but I just found the language style a bit too contemporary.
If you are a big Holmes fan, as I am, you may be disappointed in the portrayal of Holmes, but the solid writing and original adventures make up for that to some extent.

If you like good mysteries and Sherlock Holmes, but haven't read Death Cloud, the start of Andrew Lane's Young Sherlock Holmes series, stop here! Go read that book and come back to this one once you have read it and the next four. Without having read the previous five books, you will be lost at sea.

So, you are all caught up on the series, yes? You'll be delighted to find that Sherlock has managed to return to the United Kingdom, but in Ireland, rather than England. His brother, Moriarity, has need of him, and so does England. Will Sherlock be able to save the day?

What I really appreciated was the tie-in to the Victorian interest in spiritualism. It made for a fascinating read as Sherlock had to learn for himself if it were real. Also of interest was Sherlock's reunion with old friends. I think this passage is sometimes true of people as well as places. He has things in his past that must be resolved to become the Sherlock we know and love.

Highly recommended for people who have read the first five books. If you like some of the more modern interpretations of Sherlock Holmes, this series would probably be one you would enjoy.

I recently finished reading the book, "Young Sherlock Knife Edge", and I must say, it was a thrilling and captivating read. The book is a part of the Young Sherlock Holmes series by Andrew Lane and follows the journey of a young Sherlock as he tries to solve a murder mystery.

The plot is well thought out and keeps the reader engaged throughout. The characters are well-developed and each has their own unique personality that adds to the story. The author has done an excellent job of bringing the detective to life and giving him a backstory that fits in perfectly with the original character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The book is fast-paced and full of action, with numerous twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. The descriptions of the various settings are vivid and the reader can easily picture themselves in the midst of the action.

Overall, "Young Sherlock Knife Edge" is a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys mystery and suspense novels. The author has done an excellent job of creating a world that is both familiar and new, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting and engaging read.

so it was good.

andrew lanes sixth installment to the young sherlock holmes series was as usual very well written. while i didnt care for it as much as other books in the series it was still quite enjoyable to read.

what i liked:
*sherlocks back (after being kidnapped its good to have him back in familiar territory)
*it ended without a cliffhanger (unlike a good portion of the series so far this book ended on a more happy note with everyone going home)

what i didnt like:
*the most exciting part i found was in the last twenty pages (really i think i could have been more detailed but based on the intended audience im assuming more details would have been a bad idea)

so here we are. until next time guys
