Interesting overview of Dimentia for non healthcare professionals.
A good read for those dealing with family members with Dimentia. It gives a good insight into the different types of Dimentia including Alzheimer's and Vascular Dimentia. The writing style is casual making a complex topic easier to understand for non healthcare professionals. 5 star for the information and writing style.
However, the formatting is all over the place on the kindle version I read with a lot of white space / blank page, font changes. A quick fix that I am not sure why the author has not addressed. 3 star for format and layout.
Overall, I'll rate this as a 4 star worth a read for anyone with family experiencing Dimentia.
I chose Dementia: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding the Disease because it’s relevant to both my personal life, as my friends and I age through our seventies, and my work in behavioral health pharmacy. It’s a well-organized and compassionate resource that covers everything from the types and stages of dementia to caregiving strategies, legal considerations, and self-care for caregivers.
I especially appreciated the clear explanations of different forms of dementia and the D.I.C.E. approach for managing behaviors. The book balances medical insights with practical advice, making it useful for both caregivers and professionals. While I would have liked even more hands-on tips, it’s still an invaluable guide for anyone navigating dementia.
One of my great grandfather's died with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's in 1999. Although I got to meet him, the disease meant I never knew him. I didn't even remember him speaking, and I was ten when he died and saw him nearly every day for most of my life. I wanted to understand more about what caused him to be like that, why he couldn't speak but could still play trombone, to understand what his wife and daughter went through taking care of him, and what it might mean generically for me as a descendant. This gave me a glimpse into it, and the section detailing care really struck a cord. Great for anyone with a loved one diagnosed with dementia or Even someone worried about warning signs of the disease.
This book lays out the different types of dementia and offers a detailed overview of dementia's progression for all four types. The author's voice is somewhat folksy, which did not appeal to me. Formatting should be fixed to eliminate the many blank half pages. All in all, there is much good information in this book that prepares both individuals and society for what lies ahead due to the explosion of older people with dementia.
