Mage Academy 2: A LitRPG Magic Academy Light Novel (Imperial Summoner), my seventh read from author Kal Griffith. A unique, captivating, page-turning, well-written read leaving you panting for more. Reminiscient at times of the Harry Potter series. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author, with Mage Academy 3: A LitRPG Magic Academy Light Novel (Imperial Summoner) already on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Enjoying the series so far, though I didn't enjoy the second volume quite as much as the first. Pacing seemed a little slower as we worked on the treasure hunt, ignoring the blood magic mystery for weeks at a time. Especially didn't care for the mystery enemy that suddenly appeared in the 3rd act.
While I had trouble putting down the first volume, I kept stopping every chapter or two this time. Still an enjoyable story, with my biggest gripe being the formatting issues and lack of explanation on the "system". Feels like a major piece of unexplained world building whose only purpose is to pad the page count by 40 pages.
Audiobook: I enjoyed book two as much as the first one. My imagination was captured from the opening paragraphs until the end of the story. I was entertained and enthralled by all the obstacles and changes that Danny Youngblood underwent as he entered his second year at the mage academy. I liked the new characters and creative monsters which were introduced. I was caught up in the mystery and enjoyed the twists. I thought Christopher Harbour's narration was fine, and his performance kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which included my honest opinions regarding this story.
My opinion: Story idea: 5/5 love the idea and world was built decently well. Plot: 4/5 plot was better in this book, still between a 3/4 for me but I’m hopeful it just gets better as time goes. Writing: 3/5 writing was better in this book as my worries in the last book were fixed regarding their emotional swings. Pacing 2/5 pacing is still off to me Characters: 3/5 very unbalanced gender pool… all friends at school are females while all ascended mages are males… and all boys his age seem to hate him, very unrealistic. Characters themselves aren’t bad when it comes to consistency… unchanged from last book
I just couldn't sit through the sequel. I was only 7% of the book and thought to myself, no, I just cannot.
There isn't enough interest in the character to want to see what happens. After a brief glance it seems the book is going to be beyond ridiculous with a character introduced as someone with the exact opposite view on monsters as the main character, and frankly it feels too much like high school all over again.
I really enjoyed how this book had a similar start to the first book but it was made clear that this was the second book. There was an error in the middle of the book with repeating lines but it didn't take me out of the story to much. There was way more dungeon adventuring in this book and that was fun to read. And some vague foreshadowing that I hope gets explored more in the next book. Looking forward to it.
As Danny advances in the Academy he is still look as a crazy monster summoner. But some in the Academy now trust in him as he proved to be reliable. When a couple people appear murdered they start to question Danny and some of the outsiders in the Academy and its up to Danny and his friends to uncover who has done the killings. I like the series but if I had a half star this one would have been 3.5 stars. 3 would have been too low. So 4 it is.
Danny continues to gain power. He is often called upon to defeat. Monsters and dangerous humans. I like the act, humor, and mystery. I look forward to the next book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and entertaining. The story and characters were incredibly interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book and series are definitely worth checking out.
The story starts turning political instead of being "summoning" centered. Also, the same issues I had with the first one continued. It is not awful, but I don't seem to be able to connect with it. On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
A really good read, excellent characters with brilliant dialogue and outstanding fight scenes. Danny is building a wonderful team of allies. Keep up the good work.Gary Challenger from Devon UK.
