What does it mean to be fit for life? This book explores that important question. Being "life fit" involves more than just physical fitness, although physical fitness is important. In the author's view, physical fitness is one of four cornerstones of life fitness. The other cornerstones include psychologic, social, and spiritual fitness. These four cornerstones of fitness provide the foundation for a satisfying and fulfilling life.
What can a psychiatrist add to a discussion of fitness? A lot, actually. Psychiatrists are physicians who have an appreciation of the medical issues involved in fitness. Like other doctors, they know about anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and all the other core issues of medicine. In addition, psychiatrists focus attention on other interesting topics including (among other things) brain function, social and cultural issues, psychologic issues, development, drives, and meaning, Psychiatrists endeavor to be expert in people, rather than being expert in parts of people.
In this book the author address a variety factors that contribute to "life fitness." This begins with a discussion of physical fitness, and includes thoughts on exercise, nutrition, sleep difficulties, and medical care. As the book progresses other topics are considered, recreation, life balance, discipline, responsibility, mental illness, continued growth, and relationships. The last chapters include discussions of other of interesting topics such as meaning, transcendence, and self transcendence.
One who is “life fit” not only can withstand (as Shakespeare’s Hamlet said) “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,” but is one who will thrive physically, emotionally, and spiritually - even in the face of those same “slings and arrows.” The chapters include a discussion of the various issues, and each chapter concludes with specific "Doctor's Orders." Those orders will bring into focus actions that will crystallize the concepts discussed.
