The Benningtons appear to be the all-American dream family until their daughter, Melissa, witnesses the chilling murder of her closest friends. Forced to flee from the ruthless killers, the entire family enters the federal witness protection program.
Assigned to safeguard the Benningtons in their new life in Billings, Dirk Sterling and his US Marshals team anticipate a routine assignment. However, their task takes a dangerous turn when a trio of assassins descends upon the town with one to eliminate Melissa.
As the chaos unfolds, Dirk and his partner Hank find themselves confronting a daunting challenge. In the history of the Witness Protection Program, no witnesses who have followed the rules have ever been found. The question is who broke the rules that led the killers to Billings. With bullets whizzing, Dirk and Hank must defy the odds to shield the family from a fate that could mark the program's first epic failure.

Jodi writes a terrific story about Melissa witnessing the murder of her friends. She is placed in WITSEC along with her family. Assigned to their protection is Hank Flanagan. As would be expected a huge strain is placed on everyone, especially her parents who are having a very difficult time adjusting to this new life.
The book is more then just about the murder. Several stories are threaded together making this book one of Jodi's best ever.
Jodi writes all of her books with suspense, action, and intention. She brings her stories to you, places them on the table of reading pleasure, and you can't help devour them.
WITSEC, the fourth book in the U.S. Marshall Dirk Sterling Series, is one of Jodi’s best, if not the best, so far. Like all of Jodi’s books, it’s an adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster thrill ride from start to finish. Many authors mix romance and interpersonal angst as a secondary plot or storyline, so their stories are more closely parallel to real people and real life. Still, few do it as successfully as Jodi Burnett does. Creating a work of fiction that appears new and fresh to the reader is no easy task because every story idea has been used numerous times. What makes a story new and interesting are the characters that the author creates and populates their stories with. As F. Scott Fitzgerald liked to say “Character is plot, plot is character.” That’s what first drew me to Jodi Burnett, the characters she created to act out her stories. They came across like people I once knew in another life.
Jodi has mastered the ending, the final climax, which leaves the reader completely satisfied, yet leaving him or her saying “Boy! I didn’t see that coming” even though the foreshadowing was there. If you only read one new book this year, make it WITSEC.
WITSEC, the fourth book in the US Marshall Dirk Sterling series, is an intense read. When a teenage girl witnesses her friends’ murder, she, along with her parents and brothers are entered into the program. The US Marshall will have a time keeping them safe when some of the family members refuse to cut ties with their past. A good storyline, solid characters, and continuous action make this a good read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
WITSEC (US Marshal Dirk Sterling Book 4), my twenty-first read from author Jodi Burnett, who is one of my favorite authors. Burnett hits another out of the park with this one. This book continues the trend of well-written, enjoyable books, it caught my attention in the opening pages & I never put it down until completed, 276-pages in a single read! Burnett has created a complete world in which her primary characters interact with an ever-expanding world of repeat characters, some very familiar from her other series and at times crossing over. "I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more in this series & more from this author, and look forward to PURSUIT (US Marshal Dirk Sterling Book 5) when it's published in February of 2026, it's already on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This was a gripping and entertaining romantic suspense story. Well written, the narration was good and the narrator easy to listen to. They brought the story to life for me. I quickly became invested the story and I really liked the characters.
It's a different challenge this time for Dirk and the rest of the Marshalls. It was not particularly interesting from the start, but it had life changing impact on him and the rest of the crew.
The author explores the challenges presented by the conflict of duty and personal growth in this story. More that that it is a love story as two people explore how their long term goals reject each other yet draw them together. It also is a story about listening to the world around you and being prepared to step up to the next challenge.
This is a story with duty, love, action and sincere human relationships that need to be nurtured. The emotions get pushed and pulled as the story progresses. You will like this one for sure.
I started this book yesterday evening and could not put it down today until I finished it. It is fast action packed does have a few ugly words in it. I highly recommend this book. Melissa was at a slumber party with four other friends. They were having a wonderful time. She had to go to the bathroom. While in there, two masked men broke into the house, killing the four friends. Melissa saw all this, she locked the bathroom door, open the bathroom window escaping. The Bennington went into WitSec, so that Melissa could be a witness at the trial. The mob boss was furious that Melissa got away. The family went into WitSec around Billings, Montana. The parents did nothing but fight and yelled at each other. The three children were trying to make the best of a bad situation. Yes, it is so worth reading. Thank you.
Melissa Bennington was at a friends house for a slumber party when the worst thing that could happen – happened. When Melissa slipped away to use the bathroom two masked men came into the room asking where the father of the hosting girl was at, the parents having just left the house a short time earlier to buy pizza for the girls. Tat first the girls, including Melissa who was peeking out from the bathroom, thought that the two masked men were friends of the girls playing a prank. When one of the girls thought she was just going too pull the mask of the boy she thought was playing a game they found that what was happening was not a prank. The worst happened when each of the girls were shot and killed since they could identify the man since they each saw his face. Melissa knew that if she didn't escape she too would be killed.
Volodymyr Kovalenko, the boss of the two killers, was upset that they had let a possible witness get away, especially since his name was called out by one of the killers. The men said that they could not leave anyone alive that could identify them and possible lead them to Volodymyr. By using social media one of Volodymyr's men discovered that Melissa was the sole survivor since the girls has earlier posted multiple pictures of the party. Not wanting a loose end from the murder scene Volodymyr ordered his men to find Melissa and to dispose of her.
Since the FBI had determined that the murder was accomplished by a Ukrainian crime family Melissa, and her family, were placed in into the Witness Protection Program, and were being resettled in Billings, Montana. Since Billings was the location of the U.S. Marshals' office it fell onto U.S. Deputy Marshal Dirk Sterling, and his partner Hank Flannigan, to meet them at the airport where they were being flown in by WITSEC. They main problem that they team faced was that the only of of the Bennington family, now the Miller, that was somewhat okay with the move was the youngest son. Each of the other family members had their own reason for disliking the move, including Melissa, now Kendall.
Thus the Billings U.S. Marshal team was responsible for protection, of the now, Miller family. The Miller family causes a few problems for the team between making prohibited phone calls and using social media. Those problems were not the only story lines we follow in the book. Hank's ongoing problems with his wife being upset about the amount of time he spends on the job, along with the possible dangers the jobs presents, continue. The relationship between Dirk and his boss, Emory, hits a rough spot, especially when during the upcoming Thanksgiving dinner, Dirk is supposed to meet Emory's father a Marine General.
All in all Jodi Burnett has once again showed her readers that she can write a story that interweaves multiple story line and make it seem like everything fits, because they do fit. Jodi has provided what is the continuation of the story line of the Billings office of the U.S. Marshal's office in such a manor that readers once again will want to keep reading into the middle of the night.
WITSEC, the fourth book in the US Marshal Dirk Sterling series is the fourteenth book by Jodi Burnett that I’ve read or listened to. Every one of Jodi’s books has plenty of believable action to keep you on the edge of your seat. They are all populated with well-developed characters, and the Dirk Stirling series has five characters I’ve come to see as virtual friends who take me on their adventures. While each of the four books could be read as stand-alone stories, reading the series in order provides a much richer experience and knowledge of the characters and their relationships.
WITSEC took me by surprise with how many times I began to tear up. The previous thirteen books never put me through the emotional roller coaster ride that WITSEC made me experience. Additionally, there is an interaction Dirk has with a character that is some of the best life advice I’ve read in any book. For any more detailed information on that life advice, you will need to read the book and experience it for yourself.
I listened to the audiobook of WITSEC expertly narrated by Nick Cracknell. Over the four books I’ve found Nick’s ability to not only bring the stories and characters to life, but his delivery elevates Jodi’s already excellent stories to a higher level.
I received a review copy of the audiobook for WITSEC and chose to provide my review.
‘WITSEC’ was thrilling. Its riveting plot involved a teenage girl’s slumber party going south really fast with mass killings, a family going into the witness protection program, not coping in the WITSEC program, a snippet of humor, a couple growing apart over wanting/not wanting children, overhearing a one-sided conversation, the evil men were steadily planning, testing out some social media posts, staking out a trailer park, oh no…flying bullets galore, more couples’ angst, making a big mistake, an attempted kidnapping, a serious discussion with the Deputy, an extraordinary ultimatum, the dreaded Thanksgiving dinner, oh no…a horrific phone call, even worse…a major breach, bullets flying, oh my goodness, and what an ending! I liked the author’s writing style: engaging and believable characters, an amazing storyline, and vivid descriptions including imagery, figurative language, and just-the-right word choices that created an intense tone. Moreover, I liked the bits of humor, such as “Shell companies. Joey supposed it made sense that companies that sold shells would want to use a bank that floated on water, but who wanted frozen dollars?” Overall, I liked the captivating narrative. I received a copy for free and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
An absolute rush from the very first page!!! When a young girl, Melissa, witnesses the murders of her friends, she and her family are placed in WITSEC. US Marshal Dirk Sterling and his partner Henry “Hank” Flanagan are assigned to protect the family and help them settle in their new home. The family had problems prior to the murders, and are having trouble adjusting from their privileged lifestyle to their new scaled down normal. Resentment runs deep between the parents as they all have been warned to avoid any contact with their previous lives. Meanwhile, Dirk is dealing with his love for Emory, but unwilling to consider parenthood again after the death of his son. His partner Hank has his own marital issues, and has moved in with Dirk. When Melissa is almost kidnapped, they realize that the vicious organization has now found them. Who ignored the rules of WITSEC and reached back to their pasts? Now their protection has become even more difficult as Dirk and Hank prepare for the next attack. Surprisingly, Dirk has bonded with the three children and when they need further support, will he insist that he is what they need? Amazing addition to this much-loved series! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
I love all things Jodi Burnett, and this does not disappoint; this is book four in The US Marshall Thriller Series. This is the first book in the series that I have read and OMG this was fantastic!! This will keep you riveted from the very beginning. Melissa is at a friends house for a sleep over with several friends. As Melissa is in the bathroom she hears several pops, she cracks open the door and sees two masked men shoot and kill her friends. The men spot her and she nearly gets away out the bathroom window. The Bennington family; Melissa, her older and younger, and her parents: enter The Federal Witness Security Plan. They are now the Miller family living in Billings and of course it's very difficult. They live in a small house, and the dad needs to get a lower level job. The mom and dad argue all the time. Dirk and Hank are the US Marshal team assigned to safeguard them. The family must stay off all phones, as the bad guys might find them. Can they do that? This will keep you going till the very end, I did not see that ending coming! Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Jodi Burnett!!!
US Marshals Dirk and Hank are assigned to get a family settled into their new and very different lives in the witness protection program. None of the family members are happy with their current situation. Their daughter, Melissa, witnessed the murder of several of her friends at a slumber party and there is now a hit out on her. However, things don’t go as planned when someone in the family doesn’t follow the rules.
The story also covers Hank’s personal life and a hard decision he determines he needs to make. Dirk and Emory’s relationship has also hit a major snag. They both love each other dearly but Emory wants a family, and Dirk doesn’t want any children, ever. A conversation with Emory’s father, General Grey, has Dirk thinking about things in a different way than he ever has before.
This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with twists and turns, danger, several surprises, and a little teaser at the end that already has you wanting more. I loved this story!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the fourth book in the in the US Marshall Dirk Sterling and the first book in this series I have read or listened to the story. Melissa Bennington witnesses a murder at a friends home. She is the sole survivor and that places her family in witness protection.
I was amazed at how members of this family did not take the warnings issued by the US Marshall’s office seriously. I felt they believed “the rules don’t apply to me.” Each instance places the family in danger. The parents are selfish, the kids are typical kids and have yet to learn or appreciate their circumstances. Yes, their life has been uprooted and dramatically changed. I liked the interaction between the marshalls and the children. They try to help them negotiate their new life. There is also a subplot between Dirk and his boss, his partner and his wife.
I found the story realistic and compelling. It could have been ripped from the headlines in the news.
Audiobook: I was entertained by this story. The opening paragraphs grabbed my attention, and I was captivated until the end of the tale. I was riveted by the almost non-stop action. I have enjoyed the other stories which featured Dirk Sterling and his team. I thought the new characters were personable and memorable, especially the children. The flowing script painted pictures in my imagination which made me feel for the family members as they dealt with the issues that resulted from being placed into the federal witness protection program. I thought Nick Cracknell's narration was great, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
This book is a pulse-pounding thrill ride! The Bennington family's perfect life shatters when they witness a brutal murder, forcing them into witness protection. US Marshals Dirk Sterling and his team are tasked with keeping them safe, but assassins quickly close in, turning their routine assignment into a deadly battle. The tension is relentless, and the characters are incredibly compelling. You'll be invested in the Benningtons' survival and rooting for Dirk and Hank as they race against time. The mystery of how the killers found them adds a layer of gripping suspense. Packed with action and emotional depth, this book delivers a fantastic, edge-of-your-seat experience.
I love Dirk and Emery together, although this book has a lot of heartbreak and soul searching in it. A teen girl was at a sleepover with her friends when a couple of mob thugs broke in and killed them while the girl was in the bathroom. The family reluctantly entered WITSEC. Life was not easy or happy for them. Lots of rollercoaster emotions from both the marshals and the family. The ending was both expected and unexpected at the same time.
Don't start the book without a block of time to read it, this is the best box the Dirk Sterling series. now for the hard part, waiting a year for the next book in the series!
If you thought the other books in this series were fast-paced and exciting, you have to read this one. From witness protection to strains in relationships, this one is filled with action and lots of unexpected action. How would you feel if you had to give up everything you had known because a family member had witnessed something and was the only survivor? Taking that into consideration with your dad's infidelity makes this book one that you just cannot put down. And the ending will surprise you, just like the previous books.
Arc review. WITSEC by Jodi Burnett is the 4th book in her US Marshal Dirk Sterling series. Jodi’s books are always at the top of my TBR list as they never disappoint me. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. The storyline is always realistically detailed and action packed. WITSEC is both of these but the unusual and unexpected twists and turns in the story had me gasping for my breath as I fell in love with Melissa, Jack and Joey. I was as happy as they were to have Dirk working to keep them safe. I definitely recommend WITSEC as it will keep you turning the pages.
Thrilling Action and Suspense That Keeps You Hooked When Melissa witnesses a murder, her world—and her family’s—changes forever. Placed in witness protection, they should be safe, but someone isn’t playing by the rules. As U.S. Marshal Dirk Sterling and his team fight to keep them alive, a deadly showdown looms. Can they protect the family, or has someone already betrayed them? Packed with gripping action and unexpected twists, this story had me racing through the pages. A must-read for fans of action-packed thrillers—I can’t wait to see what this author delivers next!
A well written story with a lot of suspense and drama. All the characters were exciting to read about. What courage young Kendall and Jack had to face In such devastating events. I enjoy reading about people who fight back when frightened. The relationships of all the adults was filled with dark life altering episodes. Not just those in Wit sec but all of the main characters also. Sadness creeped in their lives. At least there was one happy resolution.
Thriller, suspense, and so much more. The prolog captivates you. Then you're in the push and pull of life with Dirk and Emory. There is a lot happening, main plot sub plots, they all deliver feels. Mental health, teenage angst in witsec is just an inkling.Twists and fabulous heartfelt conversations and ending with a little hiccup. Thank you for the advanced copy. I freely share my honest thoughts and opinions. #Witsec #USMarshalDirkSterling #JodiBurnett #SDGPublishing #Bookfunnel
Another exciting thriller by Jodi Burnett! Keeping a family in witness protection, none of whom are happy or willing to follow the rules, make it an exciting and suspenseful ride. One thing I really love about Jodi's books is that her series keeps the characters intact and continues to develop them and their relationships, yet these books can also standalone quite nicely. Read one of her books, and you will want to read them all.
As a retired US Marshal, I have followed Jodi Burnett and her other fictional books in the US Marshals series. I found her latest book, WITSEC, to be a great read...keeping me so interested that I finished it in 2 days. I have actually worked some WitSec during my 20+ years with the US Marshals so I have 'insider' knowledge. I believe you will enjoy reading this book as well as her other books.
Dirk and Emy are handed a new WITSEC familyto nurse through the change.
The Marsall’s are handed a brand new family to WITness Protection. There are three children one of which is the main witness, and two battling parents. This left the kids mainly to the Marshals to take care of. Things are brought to head with another attempt on the girls life. That means someone broke the rules and they have to find who
The Bennington family become the Millers after they enter the WITSEC program. The family is not thrilled with the change in their lives. An intriguing read which is fast-pace, full of suspense and unputdownable. I received this ARC copy and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.
A young girl is at a slumber party when 2 men break in & kill all her friends. She survives but her family is put in witness protection until she can testify against the Ukranian mob assailants. Moving to Montana, US Deputy Marshall, Dirk Sterling & his team take the family under their protection. An action packed read that will keep you turning pages until the end.
WITSEC is Jodi Burnett's finest story yet! It chronicles the harrowing lives of a family thrown into the witness protection program after the teen-aged daughter witnesses the brutal murders of her friends. The book is one of those can't-pit-it-down reads. I highly recommend it for all who love a great murder mystery!
I always enjoy Jodi's stories and this is no exception. Once again the Marshal's service is put to the test and once again you can't help but wonder if they are going to make it through. The stories are so real I feel like they could be based on something that really happened. And the characters are so well developed. I never want the stories to end and when they do I have to check when the next one will be out.
Wow, I have listened to this authors stories before, but this one is another level altogether. The usual marshals office stuff plus a emotional side that you rarely see. It was fantastic, I couldn’t stop listening till I’d reached the twist at the end. Cannot wait for the next exciting tale that’s for sure. Highly recommended listen.
