True heroes are forged by fire.

In a world of monsters, dungeons, and dragons, Chod has finally found a place to call home. More than that, he’s found a tribe worth fighting for.

A colossal battle is brewing, and the fate of Mythos hangs in the balance. With the forces of darkness primed to make their move, Chod finds himself in a race against time. The Mythos Rehabilitation Program will soon be terminated, and the era of heroes is coming to an end.

As the clock ticks down, Chod must make a stand if he wants to prevent a future cast in perpetual shadow.

When the curtain falls, a troll will rise.

Great final book

I always hate endings… but this was really nicely tied together. For the most part it didn’t feel rushed which I appreciated. Would love to read more about the world of Mythos

To Troll is awesome

An excellent conclusion to the series. I really enjoyed how strong Chod and Tayrn got, bit there were a few surprises for me, some were because I was reading both books 5 and 6 at the same time, but others parts were just because of good writing. I am going to re read it again, so I might change my review, but this is where I stand now.

Chod gets the band together!

It is always difficult for me to review a book in a series. Do I rate the book standalone? Or as part of the series overall? And this is even more difficult since it is, sniff, the last in the series.

"Cursed Cocktails" was my first book by Rowland and after I finished it I wanted more. I was hooked. I started the "Sentenced to Troll" series back in May and I've burned through them. And so, here I am, just finishing the final one.

Every story needs conflict. Book six (Rowland really should have given each book a name other than just a number) actually has TWO conflicts. The first is obvious, the impending war with Mosstar and confrontation with the Necromancer. For this Chod and Taryn spend most of their efforts building a coalition of heroes, nations and the tribal trolls which mostly relies on their high opinion of Chod.

There are some well done dungeon chapters switching back and forth between Pressley and Chod which I really enjoyed. Pressley has been a favorite of mine through the entire series and I am glad that he had a chance to shine in this, the final book.

The other conflict revolves around Dorothy, Chad's (not Chod's) nemesis from the real world. This is a woman with serious issues and Chad really should have been more careful. I like how Chod tried to deal with Dorothy showed his growth through this experience. Too bad Dorothy didn't have more time in the game to grow herself.

I do want to discuss a few thoughts here about a total immersion game like Mythos. I like the idea of the game being used as a counseling tool, or therapy. I would be concerned at how easy it would be to want to dive into the game and never come out. This being Chad's prison sentence made it clear that there would be an ending since him and the other inmates couldn't stay online indefinitely.

There were some simply wonderful scenes in the book which made me wish that I could enjoy a total immersion experience. Chad truly loves Mythos and I truly enjoyed looking at it through his eyes. I think that my favorite part of the series is how Chad honestly LIKES the other characters in the book. He doesn't find them annoying, even when they are. He tries to find good in everyone, even the ones who seem irredeemable.

There are a few powerfully wicked jokes and Easter Eggs along the way which helped make the book fun. Especially if you've read some of Rowland's other books.

My biggest complaint is how there are so many loose ends at the conclusion. Yes, there have to be a few unresolved issues, so that Rowland can at least HINT at a second series of "Sentenced to Troll". Don't get me wrong, Chod gets a great chance to say his farewells before he goes back to being Chad. But some of the unresolved issues should have been mentioned at least.

This was an excellent book in a strong series. It was fun to read, with characters that I cared about and a thoughtful premise. Rowland did an excellent job writing a book about a video game world in the real world.

Cheers!

Predictable end

It's a solid book, definitely not a great one.
My main problem with the series as a whole has always been the basic premise of the 'program'. Convicts just let to run around with no supervision? And absolutely no corrective measures if the players chose to be evil? Just being called a 'Hero' is supposed to turn someone around? And don't forget that when Chod arrived there was a genocide happening, one based on the color of the skin, nothing done to stop that, in fact it was encouraged. Don't forget that about as many players chose to be evil as chose to be good. At least two went full psycho.
If I was the government inspector not only would the program be shut down, there would be huge fines, and if I could figure out a way significant prison time.
The Chod/Dorothy is predictable and kind of boring.
The epilogue is a huge disappointment, with maybe a hint of another book at some point in time.
If I had so many problems with this book why 4 stars? Because I don't regret the time spent with this series. I generally enjoyed it, even though I always thought that there were problems. I chose to wait until people were either invested in, or had abandoned the series before venting. Tom out

I honestly had no idea this was the last book in the series and I was pretty disappointed to learn that. It’s probably good I didn’t know though or else I probably would have enjoyed this book a lot less. It felt like this could have gone on for quite a bit longer and the ending just felt rushed. I like what was done, but I could have stood for a lot more description. Overall a fun, readable series though.

This one was a bit rough for me. It’s mostly a lot of stalling while the heroes gather their forces and new abilities. Not to mention the villain is about as cookie cutter and two dimensional as it gets. I would’ve really liked to get just a bit more substance out of the big bad. But the charming characters carry the narrative enough to get me happily through. Everyone is still as interesting as they’ve always been and the action is always a blast.

This turned into a really fun series. I think this book could have been easily 25% longer, I feel some storylines (namely Dorothy's) could have been explored some more and the last battle wasn't at all epic, but all in all a good series. 👍🏽👍🏽

great finish!

Well done Rowland! Great finish to the series and yet you left it open for a future installment! Wish you’d have wrapped up the irl drama in a paragraph or two.

Excellent series!

Omg, I really want to watch this series as an anime. I feel like it could compete with shows like Sword Art Online or Solo Leveling.
