A Witchy Situation

Rate this book
Halloween, special abilities, best friends, and a mortal threat. What can go wrong?

Nova Foster and Ezra Woodhaven have been best friends their entire lives. As outcasts in a world where all witches and wizards have a unique power, a lifetime of friendship and reliance on each other forged an unbreakable bond. They have no secrets…except for one.

As Halloween approaches, the weekend’s festivities and a meddling mother force them to face long-denied feelings. But when enemies from the past resurface, threatening not only Hidden Creek but also to expose a Foster family secret, Nova and Ezra find themselves in the middle of the chaos.

Facing their fears might be tougher than they expected, but will they allow those fears to consume them and threaten everyone’s future? Or will they discover things that even they didn’t know about themselves?

First of all, I'm glad the author sent me an ARC's review copy.

This book has a lot of flaws, starting with the poor vocabulary. There are thousands of words in the English language, but I lost count of how many times I found a repetition in the same sentence. Something that would be easily solved by a good editor.
Now, let's talk about the characters. Nova is a manic pixie girlfriend without personality. Ezra, on the other hand, is a stalker that decides to decorate his home only according to her taste, without her knowing.
The worldbuilding is lost, same for every characterisation of any secondary character. But what really broke my heart was the fact that the "plot" starts at almost 80% of the book, before that is only an adolescent drama. It's repetitive since the main characters have the same voice. None of their thoughts are new, just a reprise of the previous chapter.
Last, but not least, there is no other way to describe the end except for "the death of feminism". All of Nova’s growth seems to revolve around Ezra. While he is entitled to see his dreams come true, become stronger and gather the respect he needed from his family, she isn’t. She’s a maiden in need of a man that would make her fulfilled, or at least that is the impression given by the book, both encapsulated in the ending, in Nova’s family and even in both the main characters’ thoughts.

I'm sorry, I wanted to like it and leave a nice review, but I was taken aback, from the sloppy prose to the bland characters.

such a cute fall time read! it’s a novella so it’s pretty short and i read it all in one day.
i’m not a big fan of friends to lovers, but this was still super cute!
i was impressed how bella was able to create so much tension and a slow burn romance in such a small amount of pages.
this was lighthearted and cute and perfect for a cozy fall day!
🤐LANGUAGE🤐 5 uses of the F word. not much strong language other than that besides some sexual innuendo here and there
🔥SPICE🔥 no on-page spice. fade to black. a couple steamy make out scenes but that’s it!

First of all, I want to say thank you SO MUCH to Bella Pursell for giving me the opportunity to read and review this festive, Halloween-y ARC. I have been so lucky to be able to help out authors by reading their work before its release!

~~~~~~~~
This book was an adorable, sweet, friends-to-lovers festive holiday novella. It was filled with magic, fun, and a little bit of world-saving. It is a closed-door romance, but that doesn’t delude from the passion I feel from these two.
I loved the relationship between Nova and Ezra. I thought their friendship was very sweet and it was fun to see it progress into something more. However, I do wish we could have had a bit more backstory on their dynamic. Due to the inherent nature of a novella, I feel it is hard to get extremely invested in a story unless it’s a part of a series. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen next in Nova and Ezra’s story; I just wish I had a bit more time with them. I felt similarly about the worldbuilding - it was there and I understood it and felt immersed in it, I just wanted more!
The impending threat of this book was done well and I felt that the climax was satisfying. There is definitely some foreshadowing going on here and I commend the author for incorporating this twist.
If you are looking for a fun, quick, whimsical read to get you into the Halloween spirit, look no further. A Witchy Situation is the perfect read for your spooky season.
ARC review - Thank you so much, Bella!
Publishing date: 10/1/24
Nova and Ezra have been best friends their whole lives. They both come from some of the most powerful witch families in their town and are believed to have no power, making them disappointments and outcasts in their family. But Nova is keeping a dangerous secret and on her grandmother’s deathbed Ezra swears to protect her for the rest of his life. As this secret starts to unfold, so do their feelings for one another.
A Witchy Situation is the perfect cozy read to kick off the autumn season! With its blend of Halloween vibes, magical abilities, and a sweet friends-to-lovers romance, it pulls you right into a world filled with mystery, charm, and the warmth of a lifelong friendship.
The dynamic between Nova and Ezra is heartwarming, especially if you enjoy a good friends-to-lovers storyline. Their connection feels real and unshakable, and watching them face long-suppressed feelings adds a layer of emotional depth to the story. Ezra, in particular, is such a swoon-worthy character—his caring and romantic nature make him an easy favorite.
The plot moves quickly, making this short book an easy, delightful read. I flew through it in one sitting! With the Halloween atmosphere, hidden family secrets, and a looming threat to their world, the stakes feel just high enough to keep you invested without losing the light-hearted, autumnal tone.
While it’s not the most complex or deep story, it’s the perfect blend of romance, magic, and fall vibes. If you’re looking for a feel-good, witchy read to get you in the mood for cooler days and cozy nights, this book is just the thing. Definitely worth a read!
Thank you to Bella Pursell for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A Witchy Situation was such a cute fall read!
You could really feel the chemistry between Ezra and Nova. I wanted to shake both of them and tell them that the other person returned their feelings. I did like the build-up to when they finally told each other. The timing felt right.
The last 15-20% was crazy (in a good way). I thought those scenes were a good addition to the storyline.
The epilogue was adorable!
If you love Halloween and friends to lovers, I recommend adding this to your tbr!
This book was adorable. It’s a friends-to-lovers, closed door romance, Halloween-y novella that follows Nova and Ezra as they navigate their feelings for each other during halloween while also dealing with an impending threat.
Nova and Ezra were very cute, I loved their friendship and their interactions. The setting of Hidden Creek - a town where magical people and other creatures can live openly - was adorable. I literally want to go there and experience it for myself! The magic and world building was quite solid - I liked how it all weaved together. The Witch Hotline was one of my favourite aspects of- it’s just such a nice little detail that adds to the world building as a whole.
The story itself felt quite rushed once we actually got into it (which was near the end) but I suppose that could be down to the fact it is a novella. It was also rather predictable; I guessed the twist about 2 chapters in for example, but predicable doesn’t necessarily mean bad because I did genuinely like the story.
However, what lead to me giving the book 3 stars instead of 4 is made up of a few things. First, the writing style read quite young to me and there was a lot of repetition, I found. Some of the exposition/background/flashback information seemed a bit disjointed to me also; Ezra especially had 3 different scenarios where he described realising he had feelings for Nova. Nova’s roommate was also an unneeded character - she didn’t really add anything to the story and if you took her out, nothing would change.
Overall a very cute halloween-y read. My favourite parts were the setting of Hidden Creek, the witch hotline, and Nova and Ezras relationship. I would recommend to anyone who wants an easy, halloween read! 🧡 Definitely looking forward to reading more of Bella’s books in the future.
I feel really bad about what I’m about to say for a couple reasons.
1. I received an ARC of this book for free in exchange for a review.
2. Bella Pursell is a good writer.
I struggled to finish this book. I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t obligated to write a review for it and I didn’t feel I could write an accurate review without reading the whole thing.
To me, it was cliché, incredibly cheesy, and predictable. It was obviously to me that Ezra would be a manipulator long before it was revealed. The relationship between Ezra and Nova made me want to barf. And I’m a romantic. I’m happily married. I love a good love story. This one was too much.
Another thing that was too much was how often it was mentioned that Nova was a secret manipulator and that Ezra supposedly had no ability. It was like every other sentence. It was incredibly annoying. We get it.
Also, and this one I don’t have a good reason for, but I didn’t like that they both had four-letter names ending in “a.” Idk why, it just bothered me.
The whole thing felt kind of immature to me. I might just be too old to fit the target demographic for this story and that’s fine. It’s probably better suited to teenagers or something.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Not a fan of the romance. I find it uncomfortable to imagine a friend being obsessed with me and ogling me but never telling me. Friends to lovers is just not my thing, but it doesn’t make this a bad book by any means because I think most people love that trope. Most importantly the Halloween vibes were on point!!! 🎃 if you enjoy friends to lovers then you will love this book.
Thank you Bella Pursell for sending me a copy of her latest book! This was the perfect way to start off the cozy fall season! This was like if a hallmark movie was set in Halloweentown! It was cozy, sweet and had a bit of a mystery! It was a novella but didn’t feel like one. It was long enough that that understood the world and the characters really well! It’s also friends to lovers which is one of my favorite tropes! Ezra and Nova are so sweet!
I adored Ezra! He is so sweet and good and from the very beginning I knew how much he loves Nova. Every few chapters when we got his POV he would say or do something that would just have be giggling and kicking my feet.
Nova is so strong and sweet! She is a quirky little Halloween loving witch and I love her! She loves Ezra so much! She is so strong and you learn how strong she is throughout the book! But she is also so relatable!
I definitely recommend this to anyone to wants a sweet little story to add to their spooky season TBR! It also has perfect timing since it comes out on October 1st!
I freakin' loved this one. It was short but had everything I was looking for in a shortie (<150 pgs)-- Romance, dual POVs, adventure, fantasy, and friends to lovers!
The FMC is definitely a sunshine character so I'm really glad that we got her POV that showed her as more than just a ditzy, happy-go-lucky person.
The MMC was so sweet but also was such an A-type personality that I kind of loved how he was always anticipating her needs, which did NOT piss me off, because you really get an idea of how they grew up together from the very first chapter and multiple flashbacks.
Now I will say that part of me felt like the conflict came up and ended pretty quickly, but it really is less than 200 pages, so with that perspective, it was actually super well balanced. Actually, it's probably just that I wanted this book to be expanded to a whole fantasy series, but I also just loved the quick-read and cozy vibes it gave.
ARC Review: This is a very sweet and fun Halloween themed novella. If you were a fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Charmed you will really enjoy this book.
It’s a sweet friends to lovers story between a witch and a warlock who have been friends since they are children. They have feelings for each other but don’t what to ruin their friendship.
There is also a history to the town they live in, it’s for witches, warlocks, ghosts, and other Halloween favorites. Almost everyone has a power and we learn a bit about the powers and how they have been used and abused.
It absolutely reads like a 90s-early 2000s drama in the best way. I could visualize the settings perfectly. It was very YA and not spicy at all so appropriate for pre-teens and above.
A very cute read for the season!
Thank you, Bella Pursell for giving me the opportunity to read and review this novella.
This book is like a continuation of our favorite witch and wizards friends’ a decade later and all grown up, where we get a glimpse at life after school. Ezra and Nova have been best friends since childhood and are both resistant to take the next step with each other and acknowledge their growing love. The imagery is extraordinary, the plot has both slow-burn, fade to black romance and action in the last quarter, the character arcs are sweet and magical and I adored the witchy references. This shorter fall read brought all the warm fuzzies of the fall season. Thanks to the author for the gifted ebook.
This book was such a fun read! It’s pretty fast paced and a quick read. There is SO much tension between the main characters and I loved every second of it.
It takes place in a magical town that keeps itself separate from the human world (which I don’t blame them for, I would if I could too). Ezra and Nova are best friends and have been their entire lives so I think you’ll know where their story is headed.
There was no conflict (which I love) and so much love I could feel it on the pages. I just wish there was a little more at the end!! Definitely perfect for the fall or Halloween vibey TBRs.
Very thankful to have received an arc of this book from Bella!
I love all things spooky-cute about Halloween, and this was the perfect cozy read to get me into the spirit. The setting drew me in right away. It is all too easy to picture the adorable town. Then there were the witchy aspects. The hotline! What a fun idea!
Getting to Ezra and Nova, they are the perfect friends to lovers couple. The way they know each other inside and out is beautiful.
I highly recommend this for all lovers of Halloween, witches, and friends to lovers! Thanks Bella for putting a little magic in my day!
I LOVED this book. if you're looking for a cutesy, hocus pocus/halloweentown, fall vibes book... this is it.
It has witches and wizards, romance, special powers, and a... mortal threat??
This was my first book by Bella Pursell, and it definitely will not be the last. I was graciously able to read this as an ARC.
A cute, fun, quirky but at some times serious novella perfect for the Halloween. It is cozy story about two people, one a witch with a secret and other an outcast with no magic finding and building friendship while working at The Witch Hotline.
It was a Cozy Halloween book with hilarious yet mysterious environment which I really REALLY enjoyed.
It was a short story which I completed in a week.
4/4.5 - thank you Bella Pursell for the arc.
I had the absolute joy of being an arc reader for this one, and this was just perfect! Such a cute, wholesome autumn romcom about two witches, friends to lovers, both oblivious to their feelings, he is the biggest golden retriever. I wish this was longer, I miss ezra and nova already!
This one was rough to get through, but I'm not a quitter. I liked the vibe of it feeling like Halloweentown, but the whole I like them, but don't think they like me and don't want to lose them was annoying. Then the whole I'll protect you and never let anything happen at the end of almost every chapter was gag worthy. This could have been a good read with a different plot, maybe left the whole relationship crap out of it or approached it differently.
This was actually super cute. It's got Fourth Wing vibes, but no smut and cursing. And adorable little novella. Well written, funny in some moments. And even though it was short, it managed to give great character backgrounds, and loads of details to make it intricate enough to hold your attention. Plus a cool twist at the end! Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes!
This book starts as warm cozy hug...and it ends that way too! Ezra and Nova are so cute, and I love the particular spin on Friends to Lovers trope that the author takes with these two. If you need a little drama/situation in your romance to really catapult into the next stage, this book as has it.
While I appreciated the opportunity to read this early, the story felt a bit repetitive, with much of the focus on the “we like each other but don’t want to ruin the friendship” dynamic. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel much chemistry between the characters, and the setting didn’t quite capture the fall, witchy vibe I was hoping for. Though it wasn’t the right fit for me, I can see how others might enjoy its lighthearted, character-driven approach.
