My parents gave me a typewriter when I was 8.

I'd asked for it. That childhood typewriter became a symbol of my frustration with writing.

I loved to create stories. I envisaged my stories in print (hence the typewriter). But I had no idea how to type. Nor any idea how to turn my vague storytelling ambitions into something more substantial.

As a teenager I did a lot of story writing, by hand.

Still, I had no idea what to do with them. This was the early 80s. No internet. Nowhere to easily share my work, or to be inspired about turning a vague writing ambition into a career.

I got married and became an accountant. A good job and solid income were more important than writing.

Out of the blue, I turned my hand to writing comic book scripts for DC Thompson. Amazingly, in the mid-90s, they published a few and paid me for them.

That was the start.
