Tales from the Tarot

Chariot of Souls

Rate this book
Being a reaper, Arit has been around since the dawn of humankind, ferrying souls from one realm to the next. Always separate, always alone, his only connections are with the departed. Some he may have encountered before, but while most are unmemorable, there is one soul Arit would never fail to recognize, for he has been called to carry it more than any other.

Accident prone and clumsy, it’s a miracle Nixon has made it to adulthood. Having survived a dozen near-death experiences, everything changes one night when he manages to escape death’s call, one more time. But who is the hooded figure standing outside Nixon’s apartment window? And why does this beautiful man seem strangely familiar?

When Arit realizes Nixon might be on his last life, never to be ferried again, can he and Nixon make a bargain with Fate in time to save Nixon’s soul? Or are both man and reaper destined to part before they even get a chance at love?

Chariot of Souls is a standalone MM romance novella as part of the multi-author collaboration, Tales from the Tarot. This book is based on the major arcana card, The Chariot.

"Nixon: I remember scrambling over rotting wet logs, slipping on sopping piles of dead leaves, and the crack of lightning looming just over our shoulders. I do not recall tripping over roots or hitting my head on a rock, but I do remember waking up to Cami crying and dragging me through the open doorway to the scariest structure I’d ever been in. If I hadn’t nearly died of a cracked skull, I’m sure I would have died of fright."

Plot: 3/5
POV: 2

Main Characters:
3/5 – Arit, Grim Reaper, 6million yo
3/5 – Nixon Everhart, nicknames Nix, Nixy, human, 25yo

I really liked the MCs, and the book had an excellent start. It kicked off strong… but then things changed.
It felt rushed, and at the same time, it dragged a little, mainly due to the MCs' inner monologues that went on throughout the book.

I really liked Nixon at the start. We were getting to know him, but by the middle of the book, it became all about the couple. I felt like we didn’t get enough time to fully explore Nixon, and his character development stalled at around 40%. Arit’s development also felt limited, but not as much as Nixon's.

I wish the author had taken a bit more time to arrange the story. At times, it felt rushed, dragged, and, as a result, a bit boring. I found myself skimming sometimes.
That being said, there were still plenty of cute and funny moments, and overall, it was an enjoyable read.

What bothered me the most was how Nixon being an accident magnet suddenly it disappeared without explanation. It wasn't well explored.
That was the main reason I signed up for the ARC was because it reminded me of Jeff (aka Jesk) from What We Do In The Shadows (Nadja's reincarnated lover) where Laszlo would always find and kill him in every reincarnation, for making Nadja unhappy.
I thought Nixon’s clumsiness would be funny in that way, but I guess it was only used for the plot sake.

" Nixon:“I’ve kept you. Forgive me.” He does his bow again, accompanied this time by his hand over his heart, and takes a step back.
“Wait!” I blurt, suddenly struck by the irrational sense that if he leaves now I’ll never forgive myself for at least not asking his name. He looks up, concerned again, his pale, almost white-blue eyes laser focused on me. “I didn’t catch your name.” Real smooth, idiot.
(...)
“Arit,” he says, but there’s something in the way he says it, the way he forms the word on his lips, that intrigues me. It’s like he’s never said his own name before, and he’s pleased with how it sounds.
“Arit,” I repeat and finally gather myself enough to step forward and hold out my hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Side Characters: 3/5 Just because of The Magic Shop scenes and Lincoln (Nix's friend)

The other characters were meh. I kinda didn't like the Fate Mother of Arit, and Nixon's family (or mother, since she was the only one who appeared, and only once) was also meh. She didn’t do much besides chastising Nixon for not responding to her texts.

In the end, it felt incomplete. We didn’t get any more appearances from Nixon's family and neither did we get Lincoln, whom I would have actually loved to see more of.

And finally! 3 trips to The Magic Shop!
One of the best parts of the book was meeting The Owner!
Unfortunately, we still didn’t get a tarot reading, but the author made up for it with plenty of magic.... and seeing The Owner sweat a little. (Hehehe, Arit, you rascal!)

“Yes,” I reply, taking a centering breath. “It’s the one soul I’ve encountered more than any other soul I’ve carried. I would recognize it anywhere. In any lifetime. In any era.”
Rai stares at me like I’ve spoken gibberish. “Really?”
I nod and look out over the water. “Four thousand, two hundred, forty-two. Give or take.”
“What?!”
“That’s the approximate number of times I’ve carried Nixon’s soul.”
“Gods in the cosmos.” Rai’s eyes are the size of saucers. “I’m not even going to comment on the fact that you’ve been keeping track because of course you would, but what in Fate’s name does that mean?

Cheating?
Cons:The only thing I didn't need was the specifics on the food. My favorite kinds of books are the ones that don't describe the food the characters are eating in every scene, or at least only once or twice. It's not just because I'm vegan—I respect everyone's choices—but I also don't think it's necessary to define a character's lifestyle or personality by their food preferences. That's why I don't read chef or food-related books. That being said, this one was only mentioned twice.

The idea of kissing Nixon is suddenly all I can think about, primarily because I’ve never kissed anyone before, reaper or otherwise. What would it feel like to press my lips to his? Would my body respond? Would his? “Definitely the latter. Kissing you seems like a brilliant idea.”
Nixon huffs an adorably cute sound that’s a cross between disbelief and humor. “You’re crazy.”

!! I don't equate fiction stories to real life. It's a matter of personal taste and what you are willing or want to tolerate in the books you read. We all have different opinions and preferences when it comes to the kind of books we enjoy, so it's important to respect and remember that it's just a book!!

"My dearest, Nixon. I have seen too many things—horrible and awful things, wonderful and unforgettable things—but never have I woken up on a cold winter’s morning next to a warm body. Never have I tasted the salt off your skin after a swim in the ocean. I can speak a hundred languages, but I’ve never spoken them to you. And never, in all my years on this planet, have I shed a single tear. Please let me cry in your arms. Please let me sleep in your bed. And please, please, please let me share your life with you."

📖 I really enjoyed the book. The world the author created is so well-crafted and imaginative.
The main characters captured my heart from the beginning.
They fit together perfectly.

😍 I loved how the book started with Arit’s monologue about his endless life. He has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, and the theme of death is so profound.
Then there’s Nixon with the bad luck that has followed him his whole life.

❤️‍🔥 Seeing Arit go from just existing to finding joy in having someone to love and care for was really touching. Nixon was like a ray of sunshine, the perfect person to help Arit embrace life

It started interesting - the idea of reaper who has been living for MILLION years and then this soul, he has been carried over and over for more than 4,000 times, and finally this soul could see the reaper? Yes, it immediately got me hooked

But then it got sappy real quick -- all lovey dovey soulmate thing 🥴

A reaper finding his true forever <3

I really enjoyed this though I didn’t expect it to be as angsty as it was. Or maybe as I felt it was - I might just be in a sensitive mood lol. Arit and Nixon were very sweet together but their HEA was definitely one they had to fight to earn. Arit was such a compelling character. He’s been alive for an incomprehensible amount of time and you could see that though he had purpose it was wearing on him. The endlessness of mere existence is an overwhelming concept and watching him move from merely existing to revelling in having someone to love and care for was really sweet. Nixon was a cutie pie in all his clumsy glory. He was the perfect person to help Arit embrace actually living and I liked that Arit gave him this unending steadiness. It was a lovely story even if I found it a bit angsty and I think most people would probably not count it as angsty in general. Definitely worth a read though!

DNF.
32% in and not feeling it. So far they've met. That's about it. It was interesting the way Nix saved himself from choking, but other than that, seems like its moving into standard dating territory once he gets over the denial.

Mason’s story and characters had some great ideas and potential

Rating: 3.5🌈

Chariot of Souls by Morgan Mason is another in the fascinating multi-author paranormal series, Tales from the Tarot.

I thought Mason’s story and characters had some great ideas and potential but the narrative didn’t really seem to fulfill the expectations that the author has worked so hard to on delivering.

Arit, the reaper who’s been only delivering the brilliant souls of the world, has been following one single soul’s path for thousands of years, and has found him once more.

That’s a great hook.

Nixon is an accident prone young man, having almost lost his life close to 15 times and he’s not yet thirty. Mason built an intriguing foundation for Nixon as the only surviving infant of triplets but then does nothing with it. Same goes for his family and younger brother. It’s interesting enough that the reader thinks that it’s a building block of the mystery of Nixon yet this element goes nowhere.

The buildup to the relationship between Arit and Nixon is another reason why I was involved in the story. It includes background information on the various reapers and their lives that adds to the mystery.

Arit and Nixon together, however, aren’t as promising as a fated soulmate duo. For me, they needed more time to develop their relationship and chemistry, and that odd little bit towards the end felt rushed. All that to call him home?

But what struck me the most was that the theme of the series really wasn’t present. The tarot card here was The Chariot, the vessel of Arit to ferry the souls to their versions of the afterlife. But does that card actually make an appearance? No. It’s just a part of the forward.

The Magic Shop and The Owner , previously a omnipresent, somewhat ominous figure, is in a diminished capacity here, literally and figuratively.

I found that to be disappointing as well.

I did find Chariot of Souls by Morgan Mason to be an enjoyable read. Read it if you’re a fan of the series and author.

___

That was a beautiful story.
A lovestory one just can imagine.
Arit and Nixon are two really enjoyable characters, even if there is no real development for them in the story. But honestly that isn't the goal of this book. It's just a lovestory like every teenager in the world is dreaming of.
You meet a human (or in Arits case not so human) and you simple know it is them you want to spent the rest of your life with.
Of cause there are problems in the way of your fate but everything will be alright AS long as that person is there on the same path together with you. Til death or the end of time does you apart.

I really loved the book more and more with each chapter. There is a part fantasy but the romance is clearly the center of the story. My first thought was it's too short but it is not. If it would be longer there would be too much description too much of words. It would have gotten annoying.
The way it is is great.

I really fell in love with this book. ☺️

Chariot of Souls is the 8th book in the 22 book multi-author series Tales From The Tarot, and serves to represent The Chariot card in the Major Arcana. The Chariot card is about overcoming challenges and gaining victory by maintaining control of your surroundings. It indicate that having strength and will power is a necessity to overcome obstacles that come your way. It is important to maintain your focus and determination when put in a situation in wish you will face many twists and truns. When addressing your love life the Chariot serves a sign that you must take action, take your life into your own hands and make clear choices when you are presented with multiple paths that may pull you in opposite directions.

With all of that being said, it is clear that Morgan Mason did a wonderful job weaving a story that embodies the Chariot card. The characters are well written and their storyline is all about making choices in regard to being with one another and taking action when they are at risk of being separated. Arits job as a reaper is to escort souls to their perfect afterlife, however there is one soul that he has encountered over thousands of lifetimes, a soul he knows better than any other soul he has encountered before. Nixon is an accident prone human who has so many near death experiences that he does not realize the severity of death until he meets Arit, someone who feels too familiar to him that it is terrifying. Everything Ari has ever known about the world is now being questioned when it becomes clear to him that he may not have another chance at being with Nixon, and he soon finds that he needs to make the biggest choice of his extremely long lifetime.

Chariot of Souls is probably one of the many releases in the Tales from the Tarot series that I was most looking forward too and I was not disappointed!

This is my first book by Morgan Mason and I loved their writing style. It was beautiful and poetic from the beginning and I felt like the emotion of the MCs was palpable. I'll definitely be reading more from this author.

The romance of the story is between Arit, a reaper, and Nixon, a rather accident-prone human. From the moment his soul comes into being, Arit is drawn to Nixon. One accident after another has Nixon on the verge of death quite a bit. During one such incident, he sees Arit through his window. That shouldn't be possible so far off the ground. The relationship between them begins to develop from there.

Arit was so sweet and I really felt for him because he was so lonely. He's the oldest of his kind and has been around an unfathomably long time. It's unheard of for reapers to have soulmates, so Arit's is a special case. There is quite a bit of angst surrounding the relationship and whether Arit and Nixon are going to be able to stay together and how they have this bond in the first place.

The story was really interesting and I've never read anything quite like it, which was one of the reasons the blurb intrigued me so much. The romance is very sweet and the devotion between Arit and Nixon is beautiful.

At times, the plot did seem to drag a bit, but I was invested in the characters enough and enjoyed the writing style enough to keep going, and I'm so glad I did. I loved this story.

This series should be called “Tales from The Magic Shop” instead. From the 8 books already released, only a few actually dug into the tarot cards and its meanings. In this story, while there were several very interesting interactions with The Owner of The Magic Shop, there was nothing about tarot - he actually refused to do a reading for Nixon.
While this story had a very good start, I felt the whole plot was underdeveloped. Nixon had a best friend who didn’t even realize how sick he was. He mentions his family but we barely see his mother. We know nothing about his work or his other roommates/friends.
Arit was a 6 million year old character but his portrayal didn’t show that. We had his reaper friends and we don’t know what happened to them after he chose to be mortal. Can he still talk to them? Why his Fate Mother told him he never went for a visit if he didn’t even know about the place and why he didn’t know?
What happened to them after they returned home? I guess several days passed but did Nixon family notice? Was anyone worried about his sudden disappearance? How did his family and friend take on meeting Arit? Were they worried about them suddenly meeting/living together/moving/getting married in such a short time?

Chariot of Souls is a standalone book about a reaper who has done his duty ferrying souls to their rest for longer than humans have measured the passing of time in years. He's one of the oldest of his kind. Arit has always stood invisibly alongside the waves of humanity that have passed. And for the first time he's been seen by one of them. Nixon doesn't understand how he's seen the impossibly beautiful man outside his fourth story window on the night he almost dies for the umpteenth time. But together with all of the other reapers, Arit and Nixon want to solve the mystery of the connection the two feel.

Arit may have characterized his life as one of purpose before Nixon but it seemed more characterized by ennui. With his endless life finally changing, there's more at stake than he can imagine.

There's a fair amount of suspense and angst in this book. I wanted the best for Arit and Nixon. This was an interesting story.

Chariot of Souls is the 8th book in the 22 book multi-author series Tales From The Tarot. The card the story relates to is the Chariot card in the Major Arcana. Right side up the card represents determination, success and control and overcoming conflicts, moving forward in a positive direction. Upside down, it represents lack of direction, scattered energy.
Arit is a reaper, the oldest of his kind. Nixon, is an accident-prone human, coming close to death each time. While the story aims for the overcoming conflicts and moving in the right direction, Arit's character is more like the upside down card. Lonely and lost. Meeting Nixon, he's found his soul mate.
It's a sweet, angsty story. But the book is just a bit disjointed. Story arcs don't get followed through. The ending is mostly satisfying.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.

I received this book as an ARC. This is my honest review after reading. Arit and Nixon are so cute. I would have liked to see more of their life together after the trials they went through. Nixon being really accident prone, and Arit always being there drawn to him from the time Nixon’s soul was created is sweet. I wanted to see more interactions between Arit and Nixon’s friends and family. I would have loved to see them grow old together. I just wanted more storyline for them. To me it felt like it was left unfinished. I loved the novel, after reading was craving more and wanted more to go on since it was so short. The writing is great, and Arit’s and Nixon’s story is so sweet and loving. I would recommend it to friends to read.

I loved every moment of “Chariot of Souls”. The chemistry between Arit and Nixon is undeniable, blending a sense of destiny with heartfelt emotion. Arit, the stoic and ancient reaper, is so compelling as he grapples with the unfamiliar feelings Nixon stirs in him. Nixon, with his accident-prone charm, adds a lightness to the story that perfectly balances Arit's more serious nature.

The idea of a reaper falling in love with a soul he's ferried countless times is both unique and touching. The tension as they face the possibility of losing each other for good added just the right amount of angst.

If you're looking for a quick yet deeply satisfying MM romance with a blend of fate, love, and a touch of the mystical, “Chariot of Souls” is definitely worth it.

I so enjoyed this book it just hit the right notes with me and I'd definetely re read. Arit and Nixon, a reaper and a clumsy human that is just destined to meet. Arit comes close to taking nixon several times due to near death accidents but nixon always manages to save himself. By the off chance he sees arit and so the romance begins.
These two characters were perfect together and complimented each other that it was a joy to watch there story unfold. The author sucked you into their romance, this was a quick read but it definitely packed a punch. I liked the world that was created and I found the story easily readable. The ending was emotional with them choosing and one that just made me happy. Great written book.

“I don’t care what he is. He’s mine. And that’s good enough for me.”

Short and sweet read. Reaper x human

This one was unique and fun. I like how reapers can mask and not be seen by humans but yet Nixon can see Arit. And how Arit had grown interest in Nixon’s soul over years of crossing paths.

I loved the meddling fates and how sweet Ada, the fate mother, was.

Nixon makes Arit feel alive and ultimately gives him a reason to live and experience things. Arit completes Nixon giving him something he didn’t even realise he was searching for.

They are too sweet together. Honestly watching Arit grow is like watching a puppy. So cute.

What an interesting story! Arit the Reaper was beyond ancient, and his brand new feelings for Nixon were confusing and sweet. Nixon was a human with a very old soul, and his attraction to Arit was instant.
Their romance was sweet with a nice amount of spice, but the thing that kept me glued to the story was Arit and Nixon's desperate search for a way to stay together. I really wanted this couple to have an HEA.
There was a bit of interaction with supporting characters that I enjoyed, and this series' ever present magic shop Owner played an important role. However, the connection between the Reaper and his human was always, always the focus. This was a terrific, magical romance, one of my favorites in the Tales from the Tarot series. I loved this book!

I’m just gonna convince you to read it with some of my favorite quotes.

“Even now, when I look in a mirror I can still see the traces of where I’ve been and note the subtle changes of where I am headed.”

“I’m your reaper. I’ve been called to carry you every time you’ve needed me.”

“I’ve never asked for anything because my purpose is to serve, but I ask you this now: will you share your soul with me, Nixon? Will you share your life with me? I’d give up forever if your answer is yes. To a family. To me. To us. To—”

ARC

I am and forever will be in love with Reapers. I need WAAAAY more stories about them. If there ever was a paranormal being that calls to me, to my every single cell, to my very soul, is a Reaper. So Morgan, THANK YOU for allowing me to read this book early cause I will never shut up about it.

Arit was just perfect. The most perfect, most beautiful and most brilliant reaper and the way his and Nix’s story was just so perfect and so drawn out and extended through lifetimes? Oh man… this story went after my heart so deep and hard.

Please and thank you read this and also give me my own reaper. I need him.

This was a sweet, steamy take on reincarnation and fated soul mates.
Arit is the sweetest and he's been alone for millenia but always feeling a connection to a certain soul he's collected.
Nixon is a clumsy guy who's almost bitten the bullet multiple times in this life.
When he officially meets Arit there's instantly a connection between them, a recognition of souls.
As they work together to find out who they are to one another and find a way to be together, their bond only strengthens and solidifies.
The writing was lush and beautiful.
This will certainly become a favorite comfort reread.

Great addition to the series!

I loved Chariot of Souls by Morgan Mason. It's part of the multi-author series, Tales From the Tarot. I loved Arit and Nixon's story. I love how accident prone Nixon is and how many times he has almost died. He needed to be wrapped in bubble wrap. I loved how many different reapers there were and how they had their own territories. I loved how Arit interacted with Nixon and how many times Arit had ferried Nixon's soul to the other side. I love that the soul is reincarnated and how Arit falls in love with Nixon's soul before they realize that they are mates.

I read this using the Kindle unlimited app.

This is an interesting story. I found Nixon and Arit engaging characters. When Nixon sees the impossible their journey begins. As the two work together to figure things out emotions begin to take over.
The two are good together and their story is a sweet one. Something seems to bring these two together but could this be the last time? It was nice to see the way that Arit and Nixon are drawn to each other and the way Arit blossoms as he finds something to live for. The two must decide what is worth fighting for. Not only did the main characters have something to say but the supporting characters grabbed my attention as well.

I loved this book. Arit is a reaper who has ferried souls for a million years. One day he feels a tug and sees Nixon, who is accident prone, saved himself. While looking out the window, he sees someone and is creeped out, especially being on the fourth floor.when he sees Arit again, he introduces himself and Arit is left stunned that Nixon can see him. This is the start of the story with how they both learned that they were soulmates and how they got together. Loved this world and am so happy to have read this book. I cannot wait to read more from this world.

This book started off interesting with someone choking to death and having to save themselves. Then to see someone standing on your balcony that disappears is intriguing. Then when Arit and Nixon meet there is some chemistry felt. I did think it was a little too sweet considering the outtake of a reaper coming for a soul. The book is also so low drama that I felt like it lacked excitement. There didn't seem to be much going on either. I really liked the premise of the story and parts of Arit and Nixon together though.

Once again, a book in the Tales from the Tarot series doesn't use Tarot in it at all or talk about what The Chariot, the Tarot card the book is meant to be based on, means. But the characters did visit The Magic Shop and meet The Owner as an important part of the plot. Regardless of the lack of reference to Tarot though, I thought this was a really interesting and entertaining story. I wish we got to see a little more about how Arit adjusted to being human though rather than just jumping forward six months.

Arit and Nixon was a quirky sweet story with a dash of magic and a lot of mystery.
Their first encounter was intriguing and the bond they share mysterious, as first impression are desirable and the short absence overwhelming.
They had an interesting journey to their happiness and the trials to it quite challenging.
I liked their chemistry and the sweet moments they shared, and the ceremony that united them was extremely emotional.

Arit is a Chariot of Souls is another version of the grim reaper, sorta, that takes the souls of those that just died, onto their next destination. Nix is a very clumsy human that is very accidental prone and has many close calls with death.

Story was a bit draggy. Chapters spent a lot of time monologue-ing inside the characters head, which makes it slow-paced. Started skimming since there wasn't much happening.

Wasn't for me.

Given the subject matter, I wasn't expecting such a sweet, low angst story. I was surprised in the best way! Arit (reaper) and Nixon (human) were so lovely together. I'm a huge fated mates fan, and sometimes I just don't feel any true connection between the two MCs. Fortunately, that wasn't the case here. Arit and Nixon were clearly well-suited for one another. Can't recommend this enough!

4.5 stars. Another impressive addition to this excellent series. Lots of originality and two charming fated mates. The idea of someone being so accident prone that they've had so many near death experiences is rather scary, although some of the examples were exceptionally well imagined. The choices of the MCs were really interesting, and I liked the Owner in this book.
