Most police officers assume the mantle of a law enforcement warrior and expect to follow a multitude of rules, guidelines, and strict routines.
DC Constance Armitage worked undercover in Glasgow before her transfer to the Metropolitan Police in London. There, she met DS Jason Knight, who helped shape how she would perform her role.
Constance already understood that law and justice were not always in concert, and occasionally, the rules would have to be broken.
As bloody and violent a tale of justice and retribution as you could ever hope for.
Loosely set in the author’s customary BTL universe that readers were introduced to in Tom Benson’s ‘Beyond the Law’ trilogy many years ago, and, I’m happy top say, we’re even reintroduced to a few characters from back when it all began. There’s also a few brief appearances from two more of Tom Benson’s vigilante creations, namely the equally charming and talented Foxglove and Nightshade, so yes, we’re really getting our money’s worth with this one!
You can always rely on Tom Benson for a dramatic and intriguing opening, one that lures its prey in like the proverbial Venus fly trap, only in this case it’s the pages of a book ensnaring its crime and retribution hungry readers. Even before you begin to grasp what’s going on, the reader is introduced to all manner of colourful and criminal characters and their dubious talents and backstories. As I’ve come to expect and take for granted with this author, no effort is spared in scene setting and attention to detail while all the time seemingly blending into the narrative of the story to still maintain a ‘show not tell’ style of writing.
I must say, I absolutely loved Constance, the lead character in the story, though I was already familiar with her charms and talents from her introduction in Crusader, book one in this two-book series. Although a relative new addition to the BTL vigilante filled universe, Constance proves to be every bit as worthy, formidable, and ruthless when needed as any of her contemporaries. The best you can usually hope for in a sequel of any kind is that it’ll be just as good, but my goodness, this one surpassed all expectation and sits among the very best of Tom Benson’s vigilante-themed offerings.
'I've read a number of Tom Benson's books and have always been impressed by his depth of knowledge of his subjects and his attention to detail. His stories are meticulously planned and thought out, which gives the reader confidence and makes the plots and actions believable. The pace is constant, and the characters pull you in and take you along with them. Having read 'Crusader', and having fallen in love with Jason and Constance, I was looking forward to 'Constance'. She didn't disappoint, in fact, I think this is one of Mr Benson's best novels to date. And of course, I was rooting for a little romance between Jason and Constance... Looking forward to the next story.'
Undercover cop, Cathy, aka Constance, is a tough cookie who lives by the words printed above Tom Benson’s name on the book cover – “enforcing the law is good… delivering justice is better”. If you ever thought the two went hand-in-hand, Constance is an eye-opener. Incredibly, frighteningly, believable this is a true thriller that twists like the proverbial corkscrew.
The letter of the law or justice? They are infrequently the same thing. Constance looks at this question and takes you on a wild ride. Like all of the authors stories looking at this question, the action never lets up.
