Courageous A Study on the Heroines of Biblical History is another volume in Stacy Mitch's popular Courageous series of Bible studies for women. An example is worth a thousand words. Using the stories of Sarah, Esther, Judith, the Blessed Mother, and other heroines of Scripture, Stacy Mitch helps her readers see how they can follow these examples in their daily lives. Divided into nine sections, this book is ideal for individual or group study.
An excellent introduction to several Old Testament women and two from the Gospels. Writing from a Catholic point-of-view, Stacey Mitch includes Judith and the Maccabean Mother, women whom Protestant readers may not have encountered before, and offers clear applications of the lessons to be learned from all of the women profiled. This is a very good choice for study groups of all levels and all faiths, as well as for personal study. The "answers," included in the back of the Book, also lead to fruitful discussion and often further research into doctrine. Note for Catholics: this book does have an Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat. Note for Protestants: These "seals of approval" simply mean that a book is considered free of doctrinal or moral errors. Please do try this one. You will find the format familiar, and there is much to be learned here, especially about the Catholic view of women's roles in Salvation History.
I thought this book covered a lot of great stories of courageous women in salvation history. I struggled a bit with how straight forward the questions were and how some of the authors opinions were quite pointed. I would have liked a deeper dive, but for a beginner study it was easy to get into.
She tried, but many of her study questions were infantile at best. Her connections were disjointed, and she made wild, definitive statement not founded in any reference or biblical/catechetical truth
It's a great little book that helps us put certain things into perspective when it comes to "women & the bible". While many bibles books reinforce "men" and all that they have done, it is nice to have a book focusing on all the great women in time. While I did enjoy reading it, I do think it would be best using it for "group studies". There are so many discussions & questions that arise and sharing with a small group would be perfect. This book should go out to the pastor's, priest's and elder's of churches with that thought in mind. It should be a study offered to all church's. The more time passes, the more obvious it is that we have not really changed all that much since the begining.
My Catholic women's group just finished the study of Courageous Women. It is a really great Bible study. The part I liked best about it is that the study was directed towards the women of the Bible, some of them lesser known. It used a lot of Biblical references and gave many points for introspection and discussion. It really made me think about my role as a woman. I think this book is great for a group study but would also be good for indivdual study.
I really loved this devotional. I started doing it with my prayer group, but then moved and ended up finishing it on my own. It works just as well as a group activity as a solitary study! My group was also comprised of college students, grad students, singles, wives and mothers, so it was a book that worked for all of us in spite of all our diversity in life-stages. I will definitely be looking into more studies in this series and passing this one on to a friend.
This was a first-reads win. I found this to be a very interesting collection of information on the women of the Bible. Detail is given in each account and the selection as a whole was quite informative. Overall, I did not find it to be lacking in any way and made a great gift for my wife after I had read it myself.
I read this book for a bible study at church. I really enjoyed it I learned a lot about some of the biblical women, both old and new testament. And we think we have problems today! This is a great little book if you are looking to delve a little more into the bible. They have you read passages and then answer questions.
I just finished an 8 week Bible study using this book. It was a fascinating look at some of the lesser know (yet still crucial) women in our salvation history.
