Winning the Nightcap

Rate this book
After a messy breakup and a string of lackluster first dates, Bec has given up on finding love. Why bother with a relationship when she has friends, family, and a job that she loves?

Everything is going fine until professional baseball player Aiden Price moves to town after a midseason trade. She hasn’t seen him in years, and even the cynic in her can’t deny that she felt more electricity with him in just a couple of days than she has with anyone. But that was a long time ago, and she’s a different person now. If she’s learned anything, it’s that she’s better off alone. But when Aiden keeps popping up in her personal and professional life, she has to wonder if she’s making a mistake suggesting they just be friends.

Aiden hasn’t been able to get the girl who got away out of his mind since the day he met her. So when he stumbles into Bec unexpectedly—and under amusing circumstances—he struggles to get his footing before she throws him in the friend zone…again. Aiden is determined to show Bec all the reasons why they should give each other a second chance.

While Bec battles her insecurities, Aiden is confronted with his own. If anything is worth the effort, it’s love, but Bec and Aiden have a lot of work to do to win the nightcap.

Winning the Nightcap is a cozy, romantic comedy following the story of Bec and Aiden on the way to their happily ever after. If you love a story with banter, found family, and spice, this story is for you. Intended for adults (18+ years of age, or legal age of adulthood) due to mature content.

This was such a sweet book. Aiden is really a “if he wanted to, he would” and I loved him. Bec has some insecurities, and is working to find her confidence again, and he never gets impatient about it. He just allows her to take her time trusting him while never letting her forget that he’s happy with whatever she’s ready for. Then when he has his struggles, she does the same for him. They are both so sweet and considerate for each other. Both walking green flags.

Most of the characters you meet are ridiculously relatable and I loved them. I can’t wait to read what comes next for some of the others *cough I NEED A DEE BOOK cough*.

There was tons of flirting, banter, hilarious group texts, heartwarming family moments, friend shenanigans, a bit of sadness, the sweetest HEA, and holy cow, the dirty talk from Aiden was amazing (also endless bonus points for buying and reenacting her spicy book).

A side note too, the postpartum support Ellie is given is absolutely top tier, and I wish I had a friend group as amazing as this one.

My only down is that it felt a bit long in some spots, but it certainly didn’t take away from the story. I had several moments of cackling out loud and a few moments of tearing up. It was a great read and I’m so happy to add it to my list of books this year.

Overall, this is probably one of the best debut romcoms I’ve ever read and I highly recommend it.

I am so incredibly glad I took a chance on an indie author at a book convention! This book turned out to be a truly comforting read, and I absolutely loved that the entire story is grounded in the midwest setting.

Told through dual POV, both main characters were remarkably relatable. They tackle genuine, everyday life problems (past relationship trauma, ill parent) and have to learn how to address their individual feelings. I am not a second chance romance fan but this book is truly the definition of "right person, wrong time". It felt incredibly refreshing to read a romance without excessive drama or huge, manufactured breakups. The dialogue felt super familiar and authentic.

A major highlight was the strong found family aspect among their friend group. This book captures the essence of a great friend group perfectly, and I'm absolutely here for it! They are such an encouraging group and all the relationships in the book are so stable and healthy.

Highly recommend if you are looking for a sweet, realistic, and cozy contemporary romance.

One of my FAVORITE second chance romance!

Talk about a man who knows what he wants 😮‍💨

Aiden & Bev were perfection!
They met at a hotel bar not knowing they were there for their friend’s wedding. They had an instant connection, however Bec didn’t want to explore further due to certain circumstances. Few years later, Aiden moves to town and runs into Bec again. The undeniable attraction is still there. Aiden needs a dog trained for his puppy and Bec happens to be a trainer. Aiden and Hop join Bec’s class. They develop a friendship and get to know one another. They begin to spend more and more time together. Aiden is all in and Bec is still hesitant from her past. Aiden works hard to prove to Bec that he wants to peruse things further. One date turns into another, and then another…

The two characters overcome their issues and lean on one another to create a beautiful relationship! What they share is truly beautiful!

Also, a filthy talking baseball player, SAY LESS 🥵

-Baseball player/ Dog Trainer
-Second Chance
-Friends to Lovers
-Found Family
-Rom-Com

Thank you so much Jane Hayes & Team for the ARC opportunity 💕

Loved it!

Oh how I loved this book. I laughed and I felt very close to the characters.

Aiden is a baseball player, who just bought a dog that needs training. The teacher just so happens to be his best friend's wife's best friend.
Bec is a dog trainer and is dealing with low self esteem when it comes to relationships because of her horrible ex.
Aiden is determined to win her over and show her not every guy is like that.
I loved the text messages between the friends, oh and I loved Ellie and Dom's characters- I laughed so much, they are a trip!

This was such a good book and the spice just hit all the right spots!

ARC REVIEW
Winning The Nightcap by Jane Hayes
Jane Hayes' debut novel is a really sweet take on a (sort of) second chance, that sees Aiden and Bec become part of one anothers' life after an almost hook-up at their mutual friends' wedding.
Firstly, I really enjoyed the writing. Particularly, the detailed descriptions of places really transported me into the book and so much of the characters' personalities shone through the details in their homes. There were also some really hilarious moments involving poonamis, vibrators, and erotic audiobooks (not all at the same time!)
Bec was such a great character. As someone with a baby, I really appreciated how she shows up for Ellie (who has just had a baby) and provides food, cleaning, and nap opportunities. She's such a good friend, and it just made me desperate for her to get her own HEA.
I loved the flashbacks to the wedding - where they almost got it on before realising they had mutual friends- and how this gave us a view into Bec with confidence, before her stupid ex took it away. Bec really grows in confidence throughout the story, evolving into the best version of herself.
Aiden is dreamy. He's a professional baseball player, and an absolute rock for his family and those he cares for. I loved that he gives Bec space, meets her where she's at, and just gently pulls her out of her shell.
I liked that the author touched on Alzheimers and the impact this can have on families, and how it can bring up a lot of repressed emotions within a family. This was all handled really sensitively and was well done.
I've got to mention Hopper, Aiden's dog, who is just hilarious. He's so mischievous but is spoilt rotten, and honestly puts in a lot of work to get our pair together.
This book was so sweet, and the spice didn't disappoint either. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this novel and can't wait to see what else the author has to come.

TROPES —

⚾Rom-com
⚾Dog trainer/ Baseball player
⚾Second chance
⚾Friends to lovers
⚾Found family

This is the sweetest second chance romance I have ever read. Thank you @authorjanehayes for sending me the ARC.

Aiden is a pro baseball player (where's my sports romance besties 😁 are) and Bec is a hot dog trainer.

They meet at their best friend's wedding and they get attracted to each other since then they haven't seen each other for 3 years.

When they meet again they can't resist themselves from getting together.

I have never seen a supportive, caring partner like Aiden. He did everything to support her.Not only that, Bec has some insecurities from her previous relationship so he wanted to give her all the time, all the space she needed to trust him totally. He meant everything he said.

And Bec I love her character so much. There are a few incidents when she gets embarrassed in front of him and I can't resist myself from giggling.Oh my gosh I just love this book so much. There relation is so mature and sweet.

Oh, how can I forget about the pup Hopper 🐾 he is just so cute. You can say he is one of the most important reason they got together.😍

Wholeheartedly recommended!!😍

I'm so ready to read your next book @authorjanehayes.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did, but it had everything I needed in a romance. Spicy, romantic, witty banter, tension, found family, trauma, and so much more. I loved the writing, I loved the story, I loved the characters. I read romance in between fantasy books to give my brain a rest, fantasy can get a bit intense sometimes. This book had everything I wanted in a romance. I giggled from the start, the female main character is just the funniest without meaning to be, and that just had me chuckling so much. The male main character was quick witted and a sweetheart, but handsome and hot and so much more. I am so glad Sarah and Rachael convinced me to read this book, I really enjoyed it and I will be reading more of Jane Hayes' books soon.

Winning the Nightcap is a second chance romance that follows Bec and Aiden, who initially meet at a hotel bar and have an instant connection (the flashback scenes are some of my faves 🥰) but whose plans for a steamy one weekend fling are interrupted when they discover they are both there because their best friends are marrying each other. To avoid any complications, they (well, let’s be honest… Bec) stop their relationship from progressing and after the weekend ends, they don’t see each other again until three years later when Aiden is traded to their hometown baseball team and their mutual friends, Dom and Ellie, have a new baby. As they are forced to spend more time together, they quickly discover that the connection they had three years ago wasn’t a fluke at all and maybe they were always meant to be each others. 💕

WTN was such a fun read and I quickly fell for Bec and Aiden. I loved getting to know them on such a deep level and appreciated how three dimensional Jane made them feel. Bec is fun and outgoing and the more I read, the more I wanted to be her friend. Still, she has some insecurities from a previous relationship and isn’t quick to trust or willing to carelessly put her heart on the line… not even (at first) for Aiden, a dreamy cinnamon roll of a man who has been utterly smitten since the moment they met. Like Bec though, Aiden isn’t perfect and has his own struggles he needs to face (his dad was abusive and the single mom who raised him and his sister Evie now has early onset Alzheimer’s). Basically it’s fun without being ONLY fun but that’s what makes this book so captivating…💙Their relationship was mature, beautiful, and felt so real and the way Bec and Aiden support and reassure each other was one of my favorite things about this book. Aiden was willing to take things slow and meet Bec where she was, and Bec became a safe space for Aiden as he dealt with the grief of his mom’s disease.

Still, there was a lot of spice🔥 and funny parts to offset the more serious ones (ie, Pictionary 🍆) and I found myself laughing out loud multiple times at some of their awkwardly ridiculous encounters 👶🏻💩🎧🌶️. There is also an amazing cast of side characters who truly take this story to another level and a cute and lovable pup, Hopper, who really steals the show.🐾

Overall, this was an amazing debut from Jane Hayes and I can’t wait for everyone to get to know Bec and Aiden when it releases July 2nd.

Wow, I really enjoyed this book! Both main characters, Aiden and Bec, were down-to-earth, hardworking, caring individuals who each have their own respective fears and insecurities. Aiden and Bec meet before their mutual friend’s wedding (they didn’t know they were there for the same wedding) and hit it off right away. Their chemistry and how easily they got each other in such a short amount of time jumps off the pages. When Bec finds out who he is, she makes what she thinks is the right decision and tells Aiden they can’t be involved. Years later, Aiden is traded from Detroit to Columbus, where his friends live, and sees Bec again and all those feelings come rushing back. He realizes that no other woman had ever made him feel like Bec did all those years ago. As fate would have it, Aiden needs training for his dog, so he takes his pup, Hopper, to the best dog training facility around and lo and behold, guess who works there… Bec. They agree to be just friends, but Aiden has ulterior motives: to make her see how well they fit. Bec agrees to give him a chance after the holiday season, and when they finally go on that first date, it’s the start of something really special. Bec’s confidence had taken a huge hit because of her ex-boyfriend so Aiden sets out to make sure she knows how much he cares about her and that she doesn’t have to be perfect because she is already perfect in his eyes. Aiden is dealing with some hard family stuff, and Bec is there for him through it all. Aiden was an easy character to love. He was intentional with his words and made sure that Bec knew that he always meant what he said. She had a hard time believing Aiden was this perfect guy because of how she’d been treated in the past, but her walls broke down little by little and started to see that she deserved the best. These two had undeniable chemistry from the very beginning, and I loved their playful banter. The girl group friendships were also a highlight of this book. Bec had the best group of friends, and it was so nice to read about how they all supported each other. Great read!

Winning the Nightcap by Jane Hayes ⚾️
Rating; ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice; 🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book was so so cute! I absolutely adored every minute of it!

Let’s start with the writing. While reading this I would not have known this was Janes DEBUT novel! It read so so well, the timeline was spot on, and the plot was so well thought out! There are some serious topics covered in this book regarding mental health, Alzheimer’s, and family dynamics which I thought were treated with compassion.

Aiden was such a cinnamon roll mmc, and the way he cared for everyone around him was so sweet! His relationship with his mum and sister was so refreshing to see, and I teared up multiple times for him and everything he was dealing with.

Bec’s character was so well set up. The way self-confidence was discussed and handled was done so well, and I loved the growth of Becs character.

I felt the relationship came really naturally, and the timeline provided allowed this to develop just as you would expect; it wasn’t rushed! I loved how Aiden and Bec respected each others decisions and also listened to eachother. Now the spice…. Was spicing!! Spot On, 10/10 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I absolutely love a found family aspect, and this book did not disappoint! I was so invested in everyone in this friendship circle, Dee especially, and I cannot wait to read more about them! Where can I get an invite to their spicy book clubs?👀

Although this is technically a sports romance with a focus on baseball, I felt this wasn’t over done which I really like! There was just the perfect amount of this for me!

Overall, I would totally recommend adding Winning the Nightcap to your TBR! It’s one of the best debuts I’ve read in a while, and I’m so honoured to have been an arc reader!

You can meet Aiden and Bec on the 2nd July, will be available on KU ☀️⚾️💕

This is such a solid story…I liked both Bec and Aiden. The supporting characters also bring something extra to this sweet and spicy romance.

Aiden is a really great guy , I especially loved how understanding and patient he was with Bec and her insecurities. His character is both gentle and supportive but don’t worry he can certainly bring the command in the bedroom too!!!😉
My heart broke for him as we learned more about his family and his struggles. The author dealt with this really well and I appreciated how her characters worked through it properly.
The story is also dotted with some great humour, wonderful friendships, the perfect family dynamic and believable chemistry.

My only quibble would be the length…don’t get me wrong I really love a long story but only when there is enough material to keep the plot and pacing right. This, for me, had a bit too much inner rambling in some places which made it longer than I felt it needed to be…
However, for a first novel this story is right up there and I would recommend Ms Hayes’ and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for whatever she has next for us :-)

Winning the nightcap was a nice read.
It's the story of Bec and Aiden and their romance can be summarized into “right person at the wrong time”.
They met during a weekend wedding party and they had an instant connection, but Bec wasn't in the right mindset to start something serious and Aiden respected her wishes that nothing could happen between the two.
Fast forward some years, Aiden is back in Columbus and they meet again and he will do pretty much anything to have a second chance with Bec. But Bec, due to a bad relationship, is not the same free spirit girl. Now, she guards her heart pretty close to herself.
In some parts, I wanted to strangle Bec for sabotaging herself in the past, but I also understood her fears and insecurities.
Aiden is a sweetheart, very patient and empathetic. He went through something bad during the book, but, with a little help he was mature enough to go into the right direction.
The only thing that prevented me from giving it 5 stars was the length of the book. I think it could have been a little bit shorter, it was too long for me (it's something pretty personal so).
I can't wait for Ellie and Dom’s story!!!

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (6+ open door scenes)
POV: dual / first person (Aiden and Bec)

I enjoyed this book because of the FMC/MMC chemistry, the banter, the funny texts, the relatable friends who just had a baby, and the refreshing dialogue.

I was a big fan of the reality between the friend Ellie and Dom who are new parents and going through postpartum, Sleep regressions, and all the craziness of new parents. I loved how Bec and Aiden are mutual friends who help out and we get to see the connection there.

It wasn’t overly baseball. Aiden is a pro-baseball player but it’s not in your face about all the baseball lingo, and the author isn’t always mentioning how rich he is😂 it was nice.

I loved the growing chemistry and banter between Aiden and Bec. Between the funny scenes that involve the accidental destruction of Bec’s vibrator, to the sweet connection involving Aiden’s ill mom, I loved it all!!

I was a big fan!

This book was soo dang cute. Aiden is the ultimate cinnamon roll hero. I’m talking Pillsbury dough boy, with extra cinnamon sugar and cream cheese icing. He has to be one the sweetest yet hottest MMC’s I have ever read. Him and Bec are the ultimate end game couple.

The relationship that develops between Aiden and Bec is so wholesome. The emotional and sexual tension between them was so palpable. The way that man was pining over her for months was everything. Love a man that knows what he wants.

The awkward moments in this book were perfection , too. They had me laughing so hard at times that I had tears.

Overall, this book was amazing. I truly loved the story and the characters.

Oh this book was adorable!! I adore a second chance romance and this one was one good second chance. I absolutely loved both Aiden and Bec. The fact they both did so many things to show each other how much they cared about the other was so ughhhh!!!! They both remembered every little thing each other said and how important those things were. LIKE he even re enacted a book scene with her 🤭 I also loved their little friend group and how supportive and loving everyone is. Also the fact that Aiden is a baseball player heheh!! Honestly this was such a cute read and I read it so quickly!! Also I loved hopper like a special award to hopper for bringing Aiden and Bec closer!!

Overall, this book was so cute! I loved all the characters and the found family aspect! I can’t wait to dive into the next book and read about Ellie and Dom!!! ⚾️🐾💚

I am still not over how much I loved this book! As a dog-obsessed millennial, I loved the FMC being a dog trainer and dogs actually being part of the story. 🐶

While this is definitely a cute, spicy read (Aiden absolutely delivers), there are a lot of serious topics and themes throughout the book. Bec is super cautious about entering a relationship because she's recently gotten out of a long-term relationship where she couldn't really be herself and, therefore, lost a sense of who she is. Aiden is dealing with his mom's progressive Alzheimer's and being the man of the family since his dad was a POS. Their mutual friends (the two they met/reunited through) just had their first baby, and you also learn about their struggles as first-time parents. All of this is super well done and balanced out with so many scenes that had me laughing and smiling like a crazy person. 🤗

Also, I LOVED the supporting characters. I think Dee is one of my favorite characters ever written.

For a debut novel, this is absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!

I needed a distraction for stress and this book wasn't it. Bec and Aiden were fine and the story was ok, it was just one that was predictable. Therefore, many will love it and honestly, maybe at a different time, I could've loved it too. I had trouble returning to read this one after putting it down because it just never truly captured my interest.
Bec and Aiden both tackled some past and present complications and the conflict wasn't too annoying but it was similar to ones I've read too many times.

Hayes masterfully weaves tenderness, humor, and the ache of vulnerability throughout the novel. The characters feel genuine, their struggles relatable, and their chemistry undeniable. Winning the Nightcap isn’t just about romance; it’s about second chances, healing, and finding love when you least expect it. Fans of emotional, character-driven love stories will find this one impossible to put down.

Loved this book! MMC was AMAZING and loved all the green flags!

Laugh out loud funny. The humor these characters bring was perfect! I love the group of friends the FMC has.

I definitely think the more serious topics (motherhood, anxiety, dealing with Alzheimer’s) was definitely woven well into the story and added emotional depth.

Over a great read! I am excited to see more from this author!
