As Zoe's birthday approaches, her mother makes various suggestions for the kind of celebration she might have, but nothing seems just right, until the idea of a slumber party. All goes well at first, and Zoe and her four guests enjoy their pizza dinner and the games they play. But when Melissa starts reading a book of scary stories, all of the girls become so frightened that they begin to cry. Has Zoe's slumber party been ruined, or can her mother set things to rights...?
Like so many of author/illustrator Judith Caseley's picture-books - this is the tenth that I have read - Slumber Party! is an engaging, 'slice of life' of story, featuring everyday people and their not always everyday lives. I think that it is this quality, this depiction of ordinary families confronting ordinary experiences with love, that has been bringing my back to Caseley's work. Over the last few years I have read a great many brand-new picture-books, through my workplace, but I would struggle to list ten, off the top of my head, that had this quality. Although engaging, Caseley's stories are not especially poignant or memorable, and while her artwork is colorful and appealing, it isn't outstandingly beautiful or striking. But there is a quality to her books that I guess I had been missing, without realizing that I was. I'm glad that, during this lockdown, I have had the opportunity to read more of these older picture-books, and be reminded of their solid worth. Recommended to anyone seeking picture-books about birthdays and/or slumber parties.
