REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD... Shantae is sexy, spoiled, and one of the most ruthless females of her time. Down on her luck since the death of her mother, Shantae has had it with people using her for their personal gain - molestation, prostitution, being an eye witness to senseless bloodshed and the brutal victimization that caused her to lose her first baby - all before she turns 25. After years of silent grief, the pain is still present and Shantae begins to slowly transform. Never again will she allow someone to cause her pain. Not as long as she has her man Rio, a thoroughbred hustler, her best friend Neeko, another down chic and the piece that she carries in the tuck, out of eyes view. Armed with game and a strong desire for revenge she decides it's about time for peace in her life and if that means taking someone else's to protect herself and her family, she will. This is one urban tale you won't soon forget!
Shantae Howard was a beautiful little girl. Her mother didn't want to raise her the way she was raised and finds a man with means and latches on. Mack is a great provider, but he makes it obvious that he's not Shantae's father nor does he treat her like she's his stepchild. They're more like friends, if you will. He allows her to sneak beer, stay up late, he slips her a little more money than he does his daughter and he does not mind keeping her lit up in the finest diamonds and clothes. By age 12, naïve Shantae realizes that Mack has always had an ulterior motive for treating her "special."
Shantae is desperate for love and affection. Mack uses his perversion to penetrate her young naïve heart. It doesn't take long before Shantae realizes the control that she has over Mack and uses it to her advantage. The older Shantae gets, the more materialistic, money hungry and man crazed she becomes. When she meets Dario "Rio" Lyles, she's crazy in love and willing to do whatever she has to do in order to please him.
Jealousy sets off a clash of pain in Shantae's poor life. Molestation, rape, prostitution, murder, miscarriage to now resolving to settle scores on behalf of herself and her family, will Shantae finally get peace in her life?
IN MY PEACE I TRUST deals with a series of significant subjects and the reality of what happens to people who've had to endure so much pain. I loved that beginner Brittney Davis used her book to make a positive point about trusting in God and how crucial change was to all of the lives of her characters. HOWEVER, I have complaints with the editing, some scenes were a little too surreal, and conflicts surrounding some of the characters. Otherwise, IN MY PEACE I TRUST was a good read with a good message.
Life was never easy for Shantae. Molested by someone that was supposed to lover her, prostituted by someone that was supposed to love her, abandoned by someone that was supposed to love her, and the list goes on and on. All Shantae wants is some peace...peace of mind, peace of heart, peace of body. When she gets a semblance of peace, someone or something threatens it, and Shantae ain't having it no more. Enough is enough. Peace is what she wants and peace is what she's gonna get - by any means necessary.
IN MY PEACE I TRUST chronicles the tragedies of one young woman's life in search for some normalcy. Unfortunately, peace is not what I found. Brittney Davis' debut wanders without a smooth flow, moving from one unrealistic event to the next. Though there was an intended message, for me it was lost on this cast of characters who brought these situations on themselves and experienced minimal growth. I wanted one, just one adult to stand up and behave like one. Age was clearly a number here. IN MY PEACE I TRUST has its moments, but mostly the unbelievable situations, lack of proper editing and characters that were hard to connect with overshadow those moments. I won't go so far as to say that I did not like this novel, I applaud the author for her efforts, but in its current state, it's not easily recommendable.
