(Corpus.)

Rate this book

The book provides the comprehensive economic reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, the book has some serious shortcomings. The author doesn't mention Holodomor, a handmade famine organized by Stalin in 1932-1933 in then Soviet Ukraine. Holodomor killed more than 4 million Ukrainians and devastated the "Soviet bread bucket." Stalin's decision to punish Ukrainians for the "nationalism" made it impossible for the regime to feed its growing urban population decades after. The second was the Chernobyl disaster (1986) which cost USSR about 100 billion dollars at the time when the economic conditions including the external ones deteriorated significantly. Finally, the author believes that if the Soviet leadership recognized the reasons for the evolving economic crisis around1985-1986, they might have prevented the collapse. In any case, I highly recommend to read the book as it shows that the collapse of USSR wasn't a random event and was decades in making.
