A French-Canadian youth arrives on the doorstep of adulthood in the midst of the second World War. René Ouellette must decide what sort of person he wants to be in a culture at odds with the rest of the country and under a strong sense of duty implanted by his church tradition. Duty will take him away from his home, but it may also show him a path to a new one. Where I Stood is a coming of age story that deals with duty, sacrificing for the truth, and standing against the tide of public opinion.
A pleasant story. Erb's language is robust at a minimum, and his metaphors are fresh. I found myself drawn to the main character and to the ethical drama in which he finds himself.
