67 days ago, someone I trusted stole our supplies and let the dead in.
2 days after I leave my colony in search of life-saving medication for my best friend, I woke up in the trunk of a car, put there by three men claiming to have saved my life.
Time is running out to save my friend, made more difficult by my three self-appointed overbearing bodyguards who think they saved my life when they unknowingly ruined my mission. At least I have Buddy, the one-eyed dog I rescue from someone who shouldn’t care for animals.
Griffin has the air of a leader, and the gall to handcuff himself to me in order to keep me with them. He says it’s for my own safety, but I suspect it’s really because I tried to steal their car and destroyed their food supplies in the process. It’s not my fault he left the keys in the ignition. And now I don’t even get my own tent.
William is the kind, sensitive type with the gentle touch who becomes my rock. He’s almost too sweet for his own good, but can become the deadliest man alive especially when danger has a habit of finding me.
Max is the wild card and the craziest man I’ve ever met, running on adrenaline and bad decisions. It combats with my own non-adrenaline and impulsive actions.
They drag me across dangerous lands and protect me like I’m their own. They force themselves into my mission even though they’re better off leaving me to the rotters.
I need to go, but I want to stay. Yet I can’t seem to get away from them, even when I try.
How to fill a book with a couple of fight scenes that stays on the surface, 2 sex scenes and a lot of boring scenes, this book is the perfect example for that. It stays shallow from start to finish.
Book two won't come out for another. But I want to read it now! Ugh! Other than that, the book was a great read. There were a few mistakes, but it didn't take away from the story. I recommend you read it because it was a cute romance with not a lot of spice, but tons of action. Just be prepared to be mad at the cliffhanger.
I lost the review I had already started and out of the 1000 apocalypse genre books I've read in the last 2 years or so, I've reviewed 3, counting this one. It's not ever that amazing. I'm not sure what it was about it. But I am upset that I have to wait a year for the second. And more if it doesn't end there. At first, it seemed corny and sappy, a bit mushy and unbelievable. I'm glad I pushed through. For the faults I could find, not counting the editing errors, it gave back in enjoyment. I didn't expect to get attached to any of the characters because it was taking longer for me than I'm used to. But I did. I would like to read Emily's story leading up to this and what she went through with her friend just as much as I want to read book 2. It was a quick read that ended far too quickly. It may have taken me a bit to be connected but once the connection was made it was a strong one. Even though the fights were far more brief than I've read lately, they were peppered in there nicely. No moment went on for too long, I never got bored, though I also never really got scared either. A tad nervous at most. It wasn't for lack of quality writing, it was because I had developed enough confidence in the characters that I could understand how Emily wasn't scared either. Sometimes knowing how a dramatic fight will turn out ahead of time is a good thing and this is one of those times. I recommend this read. You'll probably fall in love with it like I did even if you're not sure how or when it happened. I'll be keeping an eye on this author and looking for more now that I'm done with this review. Thank you Maya Riley.
I've been a fan of Dystopian world stories since I was old enough to watch "Night of the Living Dead" for the first time. And there just aren't many good books out there in the genre. This book blends some of my favorites together in to a highly entertaining story, filled with the dark humor and intensity that I love. It's a well written story. It has a few small typos in need of editing, but they don't distract from the story. It's not a standalone story, but it is a very good beginning to the series. The descriptions paint a detailed and macabre world in ruins. The characters are realistically subjects of their individual traumatic circumstances of survival, some are just a little more insane than the others. Overall, this book is an amazing and highly recommended read. I'm officially a fan, and hooked on this series. I can't wait to read what happens next.
Fair warning... There is a cliffhanger ending.
Possible Trigger Warnings: This story has steamy scenes, but it's not Erotica. Death, Deception, Detailed scenes of Blood and Gore, Murder, Kidnapping, Fighting (with a lot of knife play), Talk of abandonment, Jealousy and Animal Abuse.
This book is a perfect choice read for fans of... Dystopian Fiction, Dystopian Adventure, Dystopian Romance, Dark Romance, Reverse Harem Romance, Thriller and Horror stories.
DNF at 15%. This was a painful read, which is why I stopped it. I'm pretty bummed about it too, because it had me hooked with the idea of three sexy strangers handcuffing themselves to a badass FMC and forcing their way into her life and heart in this post apocalyptic zombie world. Reading the book felt like reading the blurb all over again... we were told they did this, said that, or felt this, but we never really got to experience it ourselves as readers because of the way it was written. Maybe I just don't gel with this author's style of writing, but to me it felt very much like an AI was fed a plot and then spit this out. There was no grit, no heart, no tension, and no authenticity. The world building felt as shallow and badly formed as the characters, and it was hard to get a grip on the surroundings and circumstances that led them there, let alone acknowledge the characters as human counterparts and not just lumps of clay imitating human life. Like I said, I had hope for this but just couldn't get behind the flimsy characters and lacklustre storytelling. 2/10.
I went into this one thinking it would be a lot of fun, and another reverse harem meets zombie apocalypse. But from the very beginning, I just felt like I was missing something. It felt like I was starting the book in the beginning because Emily was already on the hunt for the medicine. The ex-dude already betrayed the camp. I just think it would've been better to start the story either by meeting the dude and bringing him in and then seeing it all go down or just start with him betraying everyone. I feel like we never really got on the right foot with this one.
Well Maya has done it again with a captivating zombie apocalypse book. I thoroughly enjoyed this riveting read. Emily’s death dance was inspiring, Max’s unhinged way of dealing was great, Williams silent but gentle nature was calming and Griffin the gruff, mountain of a man’s protective instinct was on point. The 4 of them and Buddy (the pup) go on an adventure to find medicine for Emily’s friend.
A decent read. Would have liked to know how the virus started and all that but it doesn't distract from the plot.
I liked that all the characters actually have some depth. I could actually easily tell who was who. I absolutely adore Max, his character is actually growing from being totally unhinged to protecively unhinged. Adorable.
That cliff was painful... Talk about leaving us hanging.
I got to 87% and decided to quit. I just couldn’t connect to the story and it felt like I was forcing myself to try and finish it. FL reminded me strangely of OG FL in transmigration/reincarnation stories. She just always seemed to know what to say to the MLs without any effort.
Probably a great book for someone else but not to my taste personally.
There are so many why moments. I won't spoil it, but I had such a hard time finishing this. They are called tears, BTW. Bored. How was she so fearless before the guy, but soon as she gets with the guys, she's suddenly damsel in distress over and over. The RH was the most lackluster I've read about.
I enjoy that this series actually has more zombie fights and scenes than others. There are more interactions with other groups, as well. All while keeping up with the romance.
I didn’t like the ending and cliffhanger to this book at all. However, I enjoyed the book and will definitely read the next.
We all love a good post apocalyptic zombie fest… what better than combining it with a few hot guys, a kick ass chick and a dog? Storyline was good and the characters evolved beautifully. Looking forward to the next in series
I loved the idea of the story. I’m a sucker for anything dystopian especially a romance. There were just too many errors for me to fully enjoy the book. I will read the second book to find out what happens.
This other is amazing at zombie reverse harem. I really enjoyed these guys and I am so excited for the next book. Cannot wait to dive in. This was an amazing read.
There is no sense of urgency or peril. You don't feel like there is real danger or that the FMC is actualy desperate to help her friend. These guys nearly get her killed, throw her in a trunk, and then handcuff her to themselves like she is some kind of lost puppy. She is supposedly awesome at fighting but she just goes with it while barely trying to escape when her friend is dying without medication. These guys could do anything to her and one acts psychotic but she seems to kind of roll with it... I mean maybe sexual assault doesn't happen in this apocalypse and she has nothing to fear. Couldn't finish past the first 2 chapters.
