A small-town movie theater running classic Hollywood titles? Nice and cozy, until someone dies before the final credits roll.
Sweet Penny Cove hasn’t changed much since Stevie Jewel grew up there, though the dead body she finds in the movie theater is new. Not surprisingly, the death casts a shadow on her best friend’s cinema house where Stevie is a silent partner.
While Stevie settles into her new life, the ferry comings and goings bring a steady rhythm to the little town. Family and old friends are nearby, plus her favorite burger joint is right across the street. Best of all, she gets to share her beloved old movies on the big screen.
If it weren’t for the baffling murder, life would be almost perfect.
Searching for clues to help clear the theater’s name, Stevie discovers mysterious roads and places she never knew existed in her hometown, including murder in a killer’s heart.
What will it take for Stevie to outwit a killer?
If you like your murder mysteries set in a seaside town with quirky characters, Hollywood classics, and a dash of humor, this series is for you!
An addictive series perfect for cozy mystery fans. Join Stevie as she navigates a new chapter in her life, facing her past while learning new things about herself—especially her penchant for solving mysteries. The Matinee Classics Cozy Mysteries are clean enough to read aloud at family dinners. Each mystery is a standalone, but reading in order is best to avoid spoilers.

I love rain, dogs, chocolate, and reading mysteries.
Classic Hollywood movies are a passion, which is how the Matinee Classics Cozy Mystery Series was born.
I'm a Nancy Drew superfan.
With my five kids launched in the world, I write stories and go on beach walks and adventures in the woods with my husband or bff, and often a furry friend on a leash.

This was way different than any job I’ve read about in a cozy mystery but definitely in a good way. I’m not an old movie fan at all (ok, maybe Arsenic and Old Lace lol), but I can appreciate that Stevie found herself a niche and was really happy doing something she loved.
I’d briefly considered the person who ended up being the killer and definitely had to commend Stevie on how she handled the showdown. I really enjoyed all the key characters once I got a little more into the book and feel the next book should help with that even more as we learn more about everyone. Now if Connor’s strange girlfriend would just quit acting like Stevie did something terrible to her, I bet Stevie’d probably be happy to welcome the girl into their lives.
Here's Looking at Murder, Kid is a great start to a new series. I like the main character and the supporting characters. I like the island town. I love the classic movie references. The plot caught and held my interest. I did not figure out the murderer until nearly everyone else was eliminated - a plus in my book! I am eager to read book two!
When Stevie decided to move back to Sweet Penny Cove it was to be closer to her son and father but when the dead bodies start showing up she has questions. I enjoyed reading about Stevie and the trouble she gets herself into, if people are going to answer her questions she is going to keep asking them.
Ok but not great. Widow with no experience begins her own murder investigation because “I had to know what happened”. One of my least favorite storylines is someone with no experience or knowledge goes against common sense and warnings to track a killer.

Good start to a new series. Thought it was well written and the characters were likeable and interesting. Looking forward to the next book. Recommend reading.
