For the first seven years of my life, that was the nickname my dad used. Until he left me on the front porch of my living nightmare. When he handed me over to a couple who had no business with a LITTLE GIRL.
Or FOUR BOYS.
Dominic, Cooper, Malakai, and Beau were my saving grace.
They called our removal a rescue - our separation was the furthest thing from a happy ending. We were told we would never see each other again.
AND NOW, IT'S A DECADE LATER, IN A DIFFERENT TOWN, WE ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
It seems that luck may finally be on our side… or is it?
This was the first ARC I've ever done, and it was amazing! I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it at the beginning, but I thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm not going to try and pretend that I know what the characters went because I've never gone through that. It was incredible to hear how someone may react to past trauma and the different coping mechanisms that people have to get through the trauma or hopefully move past it. I struggle with mental health, so it was nice to see that portrayed in the book. I'll be patiently waiting for the 2nd one!!
This book felt like a journey from being lost to finding what you were searching for. I feel honored to have gotten the chance to ARC read this since I really adore the story and the writing. Alexis did an incredible job describing everything. One of my favorite parts was the paintings and how she brought them to life just through her words!
The storyline focuses on character growth and mainly their time together. Sydney is such a strong and beautiful character. She went through so much suffering but still remains as kind and nice as she is. I was rooting for her the whole time that she finally takes the big leap and just be with her guys 🥺 I adored their little moments and banter together and however inexperienced they felt, it was the cutest thing to see how they figured it all out together!!
In the middle part I did wish there would be a tad bit more happenings besides the 5 of them working through everything. But I do think after reading to the end (what the actual cliffhanger 🫠) it was fitting that the story focused on their relationship mostly. I especially loved to see the bond that was between the guys. There was no embarrassment whatsoever about their trauma and even though they are big burly man they just cared for each other so much. I really liked seeing this image of a group of guys, especially when it’s widely still a bad image that man are crying or being weak.
I appreciated that Sydney and her guys could talk openly about everything nearly right from the beginning. They all were gentle and caring in their talking but at times I‘d wished that it wasn’t always this perfect and polished clean like. I just felt that some conversations were way to fitted and immaculate which made the conversations at times feel like a therapy session, like between a professional and a client instead of between two lovers (or 5 lol).
But I enjoyed my whole time reading and getting to be with these 5 very interesting and loveable people. And yes, this one is a very emotional read with the backstory and trauma of the 5 but if you‘re in the right mindspace (definitely recommend to check trigger warnings first), adore reverse harem with 4 of the absolute cutest and hottest guys then I would absolutely recommend you pick this one up! I can’t wait for book two to come out.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
At first, I wasn't sure what to make of this story. It has a unique premise, with the main characters all living together in an abusive foster situation, and I think that actually made the "why choose?" scenario seem a lot more realistic than I see in many WC books. These characters were intimately bonded by a traumatic experience that few people would be able to truly understand and empathize with, so it makes sense that they share a special relationship that others may not understand.
The depictions of trauma were realistic without seeming heavy-handed or voyeuristic (i.e., not trauma porn). I liked how it showed Ray growing in confidence, and I thought it was awesome that the author depicted a group therapy session and the characters spoke about therapy openly. We need more of that. I did find it a little unbelievable that nearly all the characters were virgins, but that's a minor note.
Ultimately, this book's strength is its characters and the way it handles trauma and mental health challenges. There simply aren't enough romance books that show healthy ways of coping with trauma, and this one provides good representation.
I will admit that the book suffers sometimes from what I'd consider to be amateur writing, such as overly descriptive passages of appearance/clothing and from a primary focus on two of the four MMCs. There were also grammatical errors here and there, but nothing that made it unreadable. As this is a debut book, some of this is to be expected, and there's enough promise here that I think these things will naturally improve in the author's future works. Also, the thing that stuck with me was that despite these flaws, I still thought about the characters after I read it! It was a memorable read, which is more than I can say for many of the books I read.
Looking forward to seeing how this series continues! I need more group spice. :D
I can across this book via seeing some character art she had commissioned from an artist I follow on Instagram.
Overall I thought this debut novel by Little was well executed, there is a lot of dark content that was the foundation of this novel and how the MC’s develop as adults. All five of them have significant drama and triggers, none of them ever recovered from the events from their childhood but one thing is for certain, they love each other fiercely. Support each other unwaveringly.
To a certain degree I do wish that some aspects of the book were flushed out a little more on the darker elements and how they slowly progress in their relationship as adults. But that is just a me thing, as someone who knows to a certain degree what dark events can do to a person…it likely is just because I can relate to those inner demons…which is why I wanted it to be more involved. But that is no means a slam against this book at all.
This is the first of a series and I will definitely be continuing with it. Wonderful debut, a kudos to the author for committing to delivering a convincing storyline with complicated plot content and good character development. Trauma rep, mental health rep, found family, close bonds, support and resilience…essential in the chemical makeup of anyone who has suffered.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, this is my personal and truthful review.
Check the trigger warnings before reading! The book is an emotional roller coaster between heartbreak and discovering life again. I found that it was written beautifully, because of the history of the characters and what they went through in their youth it could have had a really different feel but I found that it was written with respect and didn’t overly go into what happened in their youth. If you are looking for a why choose romance that has a deep and ‘dark’ foundation then make sure to read this book. There is a second book coming, no date as of yet. Does this book leave off on a cliffhanger-yes and no I would have to say. Yes it opens the story for the second book and leaves off abruptly from that upcoming book however the main characters story is well and truly cemented and you could potentially not read the next book and be happy about it-but if we are being honest, I can’t wait to read the second book!
Tropes: •why choose •childhood trauma •slow burn •virgin MMC’s •virgin MFC •mental health representation •rediscovered found family
This story hits the feels. It’s about overcoming childhood trauma and the lasting effects it has on someone. This book definitely dives right into dealing with mental health. Please make sure to read the trigger warnings for your own mental health. Sydney has a traumatic past with Dominic, Beau, Cooper, and Kai. They came together as orphans, lived together in rough circumstances and then were separated. After their separation Sydney did what she could to get through life only to be surprised years later when she buys her dream home… only to discover her dcmbr boys are the ones that built it. They each have their own issues and this book takes you through the journey of them finding their way back to each other and learning who they are as adults. They learn how to deal with each other’s triggers and how to best help each other. I really enjoyed reading this book. It ends on a cliffhanger I definitely did not see coming. I’m excited to see what comes next.
1. This is in desperate need of an editor. Lots of run-on sentences, incorrect punctuation, incorrect POVs, general errors. Also, why are there 69 chapters for ~230 pages of content? There were 4 chapters composed of single paragraphs.
2. The pop culture references, including but not limited to: The Office, Twilight, Harry Potter, “She Comes First,” Reddit, Taylor Swift, The Greatest Showman, Maneskin, Reba, numerous song titles, numerous song lyrics, numerous artists, made this one of the cringiest, millennial-coded books I’ve ever read. Never before has a Classical Bangerz playlist included Taylor Swift and Zendaya.
3. Characters felt uneven. This was the Dom and Kai show. In fact, Cooper was mentioned more than 100 times less than Dominic and Kai. Dom: 368 Kai: 370 Coop: 257 Beau: 293
4. This is just a bit nit-picky, but I found the attempt to make an inclusive gallery that features female and BIPOC artists while creating the whitest harem ever was incredibly ironic. The diversity is an afterthought.
I was asked to read this ARC by Alexis herself 😫 I am so grateful to have been given the chance because THIS BOOK. I loved it SO MUCH. Starting with the trauma and the bonding with the boys to getting out and it skipping to 10 years later 😭 The blue painting - I was sobbing in the car. This book made me feel so many emotions throughout it. I was so happy when she finally let her guard down with Dom, because GIRL. I would have been simply deceased having all four of them swooning over me the way they were Sydney. Their nicknames for her 😫😫. And the fact she was SHAKING HER ASS TO SLEEP TOKEN?? Yessssss. The cliff hanger had me smacking my forehead because WHAT. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. This book has a trigger warning list, please keep it in mind! This book releases 7/20 and I can’t WAIT to read more from Alexis. 🫶🏼 PREORDER THIS ONE, YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!
I'm always a little hesitant reading new authors as I sometimes find the stories to be a bit trite, not well thought out, and repetitive. Especially books that deal with childhood abuse and trauma. This book was not that AT ALL. I LOVE that I have finally read a story that dealt with trauma in a realistic manner. I LOVE that the FMC Sydney (Raven) continued to work through her trauma throughout the book, with the MMCs and her therapist; that she didn't have a breakdown one minute and then threw herself into a threesome in the next two pages. I LOVE that the MMCs weren't man-wh0res; that they loved her through the abuse and to present times and helped her with learning her sexuality. The book was emotional, gripping, and I loved every second of it! It does end on a minor (in my opinion) cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next one!
Holy shit. This book will live rent free in the back on my mind for the rest of my life. I wish I could go back a reread this book for this first time over and over again. This is one of my top reads of the year.
Alexis, you did such an incredible job writing this book. I hardly have the words to describe it. This was tragic and beautiful. I’m so excited for the next one. I can’t believe I have to wait. I hope to get the ARC of that one too because I cannot wait any longer. I’m going immediately to buy a hard copy.
I’m going to be reeling about this book for a while. The cliffhanger at the end was phenomenal. I had no idea it was coming. Each character is so beautifully written and the trauma that they experience just felt so real. And them learning to love each other again is just more than my little heart handle.
I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen.
I absolutely loved this book. Ray, Dom, Coop, Beau, and Kai are perfect for each other. As Dom said to Ray’s therapist, and as Ray pointed out to herself as well, each of the guys has a different personality that helps to ground and nurture the other 4. It was interesting seeing how the trauma they had as kids/teens effected them all - a lot of times in these books its mainly only the girl that we see with trauma and how she deals with it. I loved seeing the growth in Ray and all of them. Watching them come together and love each other made my heart happy for them.
I’m excited to see where book 2 goes after that ending. I’m a bit worried that Ray’s dad showing up, won’t be a good thing.

This was a tender novel about the healing power of friendship and unconditional love. The patience, compassion, and generosity these sweet characters exhibit toward and for one another was kind of inspiring! A.M. Little takes an extremely heartbreaking topic and shines a bit of light into all the dark corners with courage and grace. And, as we all know, nothing grows without a bit of light. This book reminded me that we are all broken in some way or another, but that does not mean we are any less worthy of a good and giving love.
This was my first foray into a dark romance, reverse harem novel and boy was it a wild ride. Check out the author’s helpful trigger warnings.
HOW is it possible this is the author’s debut book?!
The trauma these characters went through…and yet the author manages to still keep the story not DARK dark. The men each have such unique personalities and there are some real lighthearted moments to help balance out the tragic things they all experienced.
And I loved how they’re all working through their relationship…it’s not a fluffy reverse harem but people working through insecurities. (just…with super hot guys 😉)
This book is on the lighter side of dark in the sense that the heavier events are mainly off page and implied and are not at the hands of the main characters. If you're looking for sweet and protective fellas, this is the one for you. Each of these guys are wonderful and treat Ray with such adoration and care. Ray struggles with confidence, but she is strong in her own right, having survived what she did. She owns that trauma and continues to make the best out of life. It was endearing to watch Dom, Coop, Kai, and Beau win her over. I love the connection with her painting to the cover!
I'm writing this review to say just how well the author covered mental health accurately and with care. I am truly blown away by the writing. My own mental health disorder was covered in this book, and it was done with such thought. Every character was written so well in navigating their mental health, and the end result was creating a beautiful relationship that had me cheering them on every step of the way.
A super interesting story but please please please check the trigger warnings!
The story follows five interesting characters: Ray, Dom, Cooper, Kai and Beau all who have met and survived several years trapped in a basement experiencing physic, emotional and sexual abuse by there ‘adoptive parents’ for several years of there adolescence. When they get rescued Drs. and police agents keep the five separate and all Ray wants are her boys who are her safety. After 10 years of being apart, Ray funs into one of the boys and her whole world stops. She cannot believe he is IN FRONT OF HER and she gets overwhelmed with many emotions. The book follows all five’s POV which may get confusing at times, but you get to see each boys mindset and goals for Ray; all wanting to love her and keep her safe. You get to see all characters working to navigating their traumas and how each member steps up and wants to keep the other safe all while trying to have a relationship with Ray. This is Ray’s first time experiencing physical intimacy as something desired and not forced and all four of these men LOVE LOVE LOVE consent from their girl. Ray starts a life and finds an outlet to release her feelings and even makes a friend in this new town and really starts living for herself. While the boys try not to overwhelm her but oh can’t stay away.
Will they be able to work out a relationship with 5 people or will there traumas and triggers win in the end?
DCMBR is a stunning why choose romance that had me in an absolute chokehold. This is a dark book and I highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving into this book.
This book is written so beautifully, it touches on very sensitive subjects and this book delves a lot into past traumas, I absolutely loved this story from the very first page and these characters were absolutely everything.
If you are a fan of why choose romance, this is 100% a must read
This story has so much potential but it started to fall flat. And it drug on. And it was never explained how the house was raided and they were all found so I hope we get some more in the second book. I also would have liked more conflict or something in the story. The only “issue” is that they have trauma and are virgins (except for Kai) and are inexperienced and on the hunt for the clit (yeah it’s phrased like that in the book) I just wanted more from the story.
This was a quick, good read. Raven had a really rough childhood and the only thing that kept her going were for boys who went through the same horrible things with her. Ray never stops looking for them and thank goodness she doesn’t. Such a great story based on resilience and love. I’m patiently waiting for the sequel!!
There is the smallest hints of a good story in there, but the authors inability to set the scene, describe what is happening without the most minute of details and their lack of editing makes attempting to get to the heart of the story cumbersome.
This book is so well written. The characters feel organic and are super loveable. They are all so supportive of each other, and helping each other through trauma. There is a lot of feeling in this book, and everything is conveyed so well. I could not put this book down.

Despite the darkness of the background story, this was such a cute, adoreable and sweet book filled with heart and laughter and a very realistic look into trauma. I adored everything about this and can't wait for book 2.
I could not put DCMBR down!! The writing is so well done. Sydney’s story along with the boys is not for all but her strength was well worth it. I’m so glad I got a chance to read this book.
This book is extremely well written. Although the suffering is not always explicitly described, you can imagine for yourself what kind of trauma Raven and the boys had to endure. When they find each other again, they do everything they can to support each other in their traumas and find their shared happiness. This story is written with so much feeling, hats off to the author.
This is my very first ARC read and it was definitely an amazing one. Reading this, I entered a world of emotional roller coasters. A.M. Little, your writing style is fantastic. I look forward to reading more of your work. The characters had me hooked from chapter 1 and I can't say I understand exactly what they went through but it was bits and pieces. I need book 2 ASAP!!! 😍
⚠️ If you choose to read this, and I do recommend, please read the trigger warnings first.⚠️
Holly shit. What… what… what… oh my. A.M Little, you girlfriend are such a beautiful writer. You had me trapped since the first chapter. Probably the first paragraph. I’m so happy I received this book. This book captured my soul. Touched places in my heart and healed some of my past trauma. It’s hard reading about things you’ve been through and seeing someone else endure it because you know the pain all too well. You made this book so beautiful & Sydney, (raven, birds) was such a strong and beautiful FMC. This story follows Sydney, Dominic, Malaki, copper, & Beau. Their life was not something easy, it was traumatic and became very beautiful. I loved watching their characters develop and learning more about them. The bond these 5 have was very traumatic. Most would call it trauma bonding, I mean maybe it is or was but the further you get in this story you can tell they hold so much more than just love for her. I don’t know what I was getting myself into reading this book but I can say I’m so damn happy I read it. It was definitely an experience. But…. A.M, girl why’d you have to leave me on that cliff hanger. My mouth was on the damn floor. I cannot wait to read the second book to this. I’ll be waiting VERY IMPATIENTLY.
PS. Please please read the trigger warnings before reading this book. It does have some touchy subjects but it is a very beautiful story.
5/5 ⭐️ 3/5🌶️
*don’t let the spice level keep you from reading this. Sometimes it’s not about the spicy scenes. While it does have them. The story is so much deeper. It may be a far and few in between on the spicyness but when it happens, baby it happens 😉
