My first read of 2025 is this very small book – which is in the genre of non-fiction and in brief talks about 3 famous murders that took place in Madras pre-independence.
The first chapter is about the murder of Alavandar – who was a pen and saree salesman in Madras. A headless dead body is found in a train to ceylon and within 2 days the head is recovered from the beach/seaside. This was how Alavandar was found by the police. And who were his killers- a newly married Malayali couple who had just started their life- Prabhakara Menon and Devaki Menon.
The second chapter is the murder of Clement De La Haye, a British national and the principal of Newington House college in Madras. This college had the princes from various princely states of British India studying here and needless to say few of these boys were in the primary accused list and finally the heir to the Kadambur estate was implicated in the murder by the false statement given by the heir to the Singampatti estate.
The last chapter is about the murder of the infamous Tamil cinema journalist Lakshmikanthan and this case was very famous during those days due to the names of the accused involved. They were famous film actors M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and N. S. Krishnan
There are no surprises or masala stories as most of these details are already out in the public domain, but for people like me who haven’t heard much about these incidents, it is a quick read.
Book title : Murder in Madras Language: Malayalam Genre: Non Fiction Author: G.R Indugopan Publishing Year : 2003 Review: [A beginner reader's beginner review.]
This 70 page book goes through some details of three murders that happened in Madras, before the state of Kerala was formed. The murder of a salesman (Alavanthar ), a British Principal of a college (Cement De La Haye ) , and an infamous Tamil journalist (Lakshmikanthan), all who were involved directly or indirectly with some scandalous stories. Didn't feel it was a read that was complete, maybe because ,in real all 3 cases were ended with some ambiguity.
