Jeffrey has never quite fit in with his peers. He has always been told by mother that he is a special boy. After an incident at school, he is forced to begin working at the local funeral home. Things at Bellevue's are not quite as picture perfect as they seem, and soon Jeffrey begins to discover that he has a dark side.
Just a girl who loves to read and write dark books with lots of triggers. Coffee is a necessity not a luxury. Stephen king is one of the greatest writers of all time. While I love the color black because it goes with everything, pink and glitter are my favorite colors. I love fall and winter more than summer, and dark, gloomy, rainy weather is my favorite. I love snacks and naps; snacks and naps are the absolute best.
This is quite a different book to what I would normally read, and it does step outside of normal boundaries.
I am still not a hundred percent sure of how I feel about it! It definitely is very dark and twisted. Poor Jeffery has an overbearing mother, is the outcast in school and is bullied. His mother manages to secure him a job working at the local funeral parlour after he stepped way out of line at school. Thus, leads to a very perverted and dark journey.
Quite a few things happened in the book that I did not see coming. I think it was a brave decision to write abut Jeffery and I do think the author handled it well.
Kudos to the author for touching a subject that many would not even go near with a barge pole. It takes a lot of mettle to tackle an insidious horror like this, and I appreciate that there’s no greater evil than other people.
I did think sometimes it went a little too far beyond the realm of believability, and while I understand its fiction, some of the parts of this were a bit gratuitous beyond the horror elements. For those who are easily triggered, this is not for you- I don’t mean that negatively, I just mean it as a heads up.
I would have liked some stats and context around this story for the less educated, but let’s just say there’s a reason that mortuaries will seek out hiring women over men.
I read “Predators” by the same author right before reading this book so I dove in with high expectations because of how much I loved “Predators”. I’m stuck between 4.5 and 5 stars. It’s a short read and a little slow at times, but it still manages to be entertaining during the slow periods. It follows a young man named Jeffrey who appears to be on the spectrum and gets a job working for a funeral director. Jeffrey’s mom made me want to scream a lot of the time because she seemed superficial and cold. Jeffrey is bullied relentlessly at school until he graduates and becomes full-time at the funeral home (where some very weird shit happens). The ending of this book was absolutely shocking, and it alone deserves 5 stars. This was a short, entertaining, disturbing little read and I hope to read more of this authors work.
Jeffrey is a young man who lives with his passive aggressive overbearing mom- she’s a piece of work. He is used to being bullied & made fun of for his intellect, social skills, and appearance…. and he accepts it for the most part. His mom secures him a job at the local funeral home so he will have a career once he graduates…. And he ends up loving it.
There are so many trigger warnings that need to be posted for this book: bullying, rape, torture, necrophilia, murder, and incest- all crammed into this one book!
The book is a quick disturbing read, and just when I thought I’d gotten through the worst of it- something else happened. 🤦🏻♀️ Don’t read it unless you can handle the trigger warnings I mentioned…. This is gross. (I don’t mind gross.)
Jeffrey is a wild story!!! READ ⚠ You're metal health matters!!! I can not express enough to read any and all warnings on this book before you read it!!!
The best way to describe this story is like watching ( or in this case reading )a train wreck you can't look away from lol.. That said the author did a fantastic job with the storyline it's so wild and interesting that I couldn't put it down. I did really enjoy it even though it's not my cup of tea. I couldn't put it down because I just had to know what happened. IMO it's worth the read but that said it definitely is not for everyone. If you like dark, twisted, and taboo read then this is for you!
Jeffrey is this naive and odd kid who has had a tough life. After several mishaps with his peers and never fitting in, his mother, who always seems to brush off his feelings and circumstances, provides him with an opportunity to work at a funeral home with Mr. Jenkins. The book takes a dark turn as Jeffrey finds romance with the dead and learns secrets about his mother from Mr. Jenkins. This is when the plot thickens. To avoid giving any spoilers, I will say, "Like Father Like Son."
When I read TW for this book, I wasn’t sure what to think. I don’t have any triggers so for me, the darker the better. Yes, I know, I’m sick lol. I dived right in and Shonda was not kidding. The necrophilia may be off-putting to some, but I appreciated the way this author was able to put us in Jeffrey’s head. The ending twist was like, “What??”, but made total sense. Not for the faint of heart, this one. I loved it.
This one is probably more accurately a 3.5 for me. My main advice would be to definitely check the trigger warnings, there is a lot going on in this relatively short book. I’m not sure how I feel about this one, I felt some things could have been expanded on but the twist at the end did catch me by surprise and I think I will be pondering on the impact of this revelation on previous sections for a while
The story is about a boy who doesn't fit in and end up working at a mysterious funernal home and soon he found his dark side. That's was a unique and interesting read. It blends of mystery and character development. It is perfect for reader who enjoy a story with a mix of coming-of-age and dark.
Wow! Jeffrey has some serious issues. The kid that doesn't fit in gets bullied the outcast is difficult. Mom isn't much help. In this story of an outcast and a misfit who finds darker ways to appease his appetite This book takes lots of twists and turns back you just don't imagine coming your way. Definitely worth reading.
I will warn this book needs some trigger warning for bullying and SA/R among other things!
I don’t know that this is my typical read I’d go for but I will say it is interesting! This has a horrorish vibe! Definitely has me hooked! This is one wild story from beginning to absolute end!!
This book is gripping. It makes you feel an array of emotions from the very start. It contains some content that may be hard for some readers to get through, but nevertheless a fantastic read. However I did find the ending to be a bit lackluster. It is abrupt and feels rushed. Would still recommend.
I was eager to start this book because it seemed like perfect brain fuel for my demented mind, it was way better than I expected, my emotions were all over the place, unsure how to feel about certain characters and events, and after finishing I am even more stunned 😳. Love it and am off to check out more by this author.
For how short this book is, there is A LOT to unpack. Definitely check trigger warnings as there are many elements to Jeffrey’s story that will be upsetting to some readers. Definitely not for everyone. I am admittedly kind of shocked I read a book with the content this book has. Dark, twisted and quite taboo! Good twist at the end that I enjoyed.
I did not see that plot twist coming!!! Such a good book a little twisted but overall wow!!! Not sure if I would read it again simply because it was a little too twisted for me.
What a bittersweet and heart wrenching tale this was. Just when you think you’ve finally gotten everything figured out and reached Jeffrey’s turnaround point for life, the author has to go and throw a damn monkey wrench into it. My damn jaw dropped! RUDE!!!
Interesting (& a little disturbing) read. I couldn’t get past the grammatical errors and the ending felt a little rushed but overall it was entertaining.
Would not recommend to those who are easily triggered.
This was definitely a strange story which fits exactly the genre of the book! I Definitely felt bad for Jeffrey and Al. I knew Mike was a little strange too. Definitely some twists in the story kept me guessing.
I can't express what I just read! Poor jeffrey! Without giving too much away, he didn't deserve all that. I wish things turned out better for him. This short story is definitely not for everyone but if you enjoy splatterpunk or subjects that are triggering I definitely suggest this!
First and foremost, this is a dark, squeamish, trigger-filled, gasp-out-loud, and clutch-your-pearls kind of book. Fortunately for me, I was so into it 😉
After finishing "Jeffrey," I had to pause for five days to reflect on how twisted I am and why I have no triggers.
I had several WTF moments while reading. The story is not what I expected going in, but it did not disappoint.
Once again: some seriously messed-up stuff goes down. If this is not your jam, don't hurt your feelings. This. Book. Is. NOT. For. You!
However, if you're down for any of the aforementioned stuff, this IS definitely for you, and I highly recommend it.
This was an incredible book! It’s dark and twisted with the taboo elements, the storyline itself of the boy who never fit in was amazing. And the twist at the end was crazy!
I saw the author post her book on a fb page and I said “why not give it a try”. Boy was I NOT disappointed! I haven’t read a book like this I think ever! I thought I knew what was going on and how it would end but boom! The ending really catches you off guard. So many times I thought what am I reading but I couldn’t put it down! Literally read this book in one sitting. Five stars!
Very disturbing, check your triggers and proceed. There are no chapters even though it could be a short chapter book. I'm not sure of that's intensional or what, but it made the story feel like it was just all quickly happening and you didn't get a chance to stop and process what was happening before the next thing occurred. Super interesting. Very dark and disturbed for sure. Some things I almost couldn't finish while I was reading, but then it was over before I could put it down. It's written in 3rd person and focuses on Jeffrey the entire time, but it doesn't go into detail with his emotions it's more facts, statements and events. So it made me feel like I was watching him through the entire thing without fully understanding if he even knew what he felt, or if he felt anything. I can't really explain how it made me feel. I dissociated I think.
