Normally creepy kids stories just aren't my thing but for some reason this one really worked for me, until near the end. The plot conveniences got a little much at that point and I felt like another round of edits would have been necessary to bring the lead up to the ending closer to the quality level of the earlier pages.
This monsterous novella is like a modern Rosemary's Baby meets Orphan.
A therapist and his wife decide to adopt a little boy, much to their older son's disdain. This child has some really creepy habits (like his backpack full of dead animals) and there's definitely something not right with him.
But we'll find out there's so much more going on than at first believed. Family secrets, demonic entities, and a terrifying backstory will send your goosebumps into overdrive.
This novella starts strong and manages to get ever increasingly more horrific as it goes along. It's one of those "can't put it down" books even though it's freaking you out! I highly recommend it.
This book was a whole vibe!!! If you’re into horror novels with a little bit of a supernatural twists, join Leo’s insanity. If you’re not an audiobook listener, trust me that you’ll still enjoy this one as I felt as if I was in a real live horror movie. The sound effects & narrator really brought this story to life! Throughly enjoyed this story and wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a part 2! Although the story felt complete, the author left it open to the potential of expanding.
Finished quicker than I have any other books recently just not getting any real experience out of them one was short but good I enjoy the author's work and look forward to reading more in the future...
Thanks to Truborn Press for the e-ARC, I’m glad for this spooky read!
With the son’s name being Craven, and the way the story opened, I really thought this was going to be some kind of modernized werewolf story. I’m not entirely sure why, but that was the first thought that hit me. It’s not, and I happened to like the direction the story took.
Leo is the daughter of one of Paul’s closest patients. So when something goes wrong, his wife thinks it’s only right that they take him in. The eight year old has some real quirks to him, and it’s a learning curve for the entirety family. He’s obsessed with death, recruiting a small army of roadkill and dead animals. He keeps them in a backpack, and plays with them like toys. However, when he does, strange things happen, and they even seem to move…
It’s not just Craven having a hard time adjusting to this new life change…frankly there’s something off about Leo and his parents just can’t see it. He tries to reach out and make the brotherly connection, but it doesn’t work, doesn’t last, and things go wrong from there. I even liked how Leo speaks in a way that’s not usual for a child to his adoptive father, really adding to that layer of other.
While this is short, it does do a solid job of building an atmosphere of paranoia, and Craven seems to be the only one noticing that there’s something wrong with Leo. It could be Paul’s blissful ignorance, his wife’s plotting, or something else entirely that’s keeping them blinded to it. But will they catch on only when it’s too late? The later, more demonic, parts of this book brought to mind scenes from Paramount’s Evil, which I loved.
The examination of familial ties is really well done, and although I wish this had a wider, more in depth ending, the story really is about that examination overall. The ties that bind them are also part of the problem, dragging them down. This family’s legacy is anything but normal.
This short novella packs quite a punch filled with the horrors of adoption, parenting, and trying to liven up stale family dynamics.
I was drawn to the brotherly element in this story initially but the way everything unraveled I was left sitting with my thoughts for a bit.
This is well written and the story is great. The scary kid is all of that. Carrying around his smelly backpack of dead things, you knew it was going to amount to something. I think where this book missed an opportunity is in the emotional levity. This story had a lot of room to be expanded, and that is made very obvious in the last twenty pages as things speed up in a way that almost feels like someone else wrote it.
It’s hard to talk about one of my favorite pieces of this without spoiling but I will also contradict my last point by saying in that same twenty pages that there is some fun descriptive writing centered around the antagonist and that made my little horror heart smile.
If you need something short to read, this is a solid book to check out.
A well-written, short, impactful Novella. So many relevant topics explored in this work. Gripping story of familial relationships and mental health. This is my first read by this new to me author. I will read more by this author.
I blew through this book so fast! Leo will have you looking at your OWN kids sideways lol... And his little "collection" of... had me ready to throw my Kindle! It was creepy, dark, intriguing, suspenseful, and tragic all at the same time. I'm not mad and am ready for her next psychotic read!
This horror story gripped me from start to finish with its dark themes and evil characters. Some characters’ behaviors shocked me more than others. The audiobook is well done using background music, sound effects, and distinct voices for each character.
This is my kind of horror! I'll preface this with over the years I've tried really hard to find horror written by black authors that weren't rooted in some sort of trauma, mainly slavery. But this book here is just straight to the point horror and I love it! Midway in as I was explaining to my husband about the book I asked him if he'd heard of children being born in storms. Bc ppl tend to be superstitious around rain/storms for weddings but are they that way for births? Bc Leo's entry earthside was a doozy. And that lil child and his backpack scared the mess outta me 😂 I was so scared and concerned for Craven throughout the book. I just knew whatever was gonna happen it was gonna be bad. But Paul and what he did shocked me the most. Bc what was in that daggon diary!?!? And Claire I somewhat want to hold her responsible for this but I know in my ❤ of ❤s Pharoah pulled a Jedi mind trick and whispered these thoughts into her head. For all I know he could be the real reason behind her not being able to have a baby bc Leo was supposed be in their lives. Idk! But what I do know is Leo is a psychopath. And this needs to be a movie. This was my first time reading this author's work and it will not be the last.
I have read several books by Kenya Moss-Dyme and one thing I always enjoy about her is her engaging writing style. This story drew me in immediately and held my attention until the end. I finished it in one sitting. Kenya's stories always seem to have a message or portray some kind of theme so I was watching out for that as I read.
There were multiple themes explored in this book, including: a mother's worst fear, a child growing up in foster care and some implications of that, the sometimes blurred lines between mental health issues and manipulation, therapist/patient relationships and ethical boundaries, childhood psychopathy, and the list went on.
Leo's character became increasingly sinister as the story went on, and poor Craven had to watch the transformation before his own eyes. Claire seemed absolutely clueless, while Paul thought he was slick, til he realized he wasn't.
All in all, I think this story touched on a number of themes surrounding the foster care system, potential downsides of adoption, mental health, coping with trauma, and therapy with some dark twists etched throughout.
I think the author nailed it in terms of accomplishing the goal of the publisher to create unsettling stories whose endings lead to lingering thoughts. For anyone who loves horror, this is right up your alley. There were some elements of the story that weren't my cup of tea and I felt like Craven's character needed more closure, but I do think the story will cause the reader to reflect on certain aspects of society that they may not normally think about deeply.
That little boy wouldn’t have come into my house, that’s first things first. The author did a great job at describing the characters and their personalities, I felt like I knew what was going to happen, but I did not see any of the twists coming at all. It’s a good story about entities and evil and what happens when you try to do a nice thing. But also, what happens when you ignore all the red flags. A child or not, Leo was nutty from the beginning!
Take a close look at that gorgeous cover. That’s a dead mouse threaded through the eye sockets. (Insert diabolical laugh here). This book is what would result if Satan, Damien (from The Omen), and roadkill all had a baby together. And I mean that in the best way possible. Check the trigger warnings in the back of the book before reading. It’s been two years since I read Dead Inside and hadn’t been able to get the smell out of my nose, until this novel came along, that is!
This novel takes the creepy kids trope to the next level. Craven is a kid whose parents adopt an 8-year-old boy, Leo, despite what we might consider to be some “red flags” (to put it mildly). Leo doesn’t join the family with emotional baggage…he joins the family with actual baggage…a special, special backpack. Does bad luck follow Leo? Does catastrophe ensue everywhere he goes? Or does Leo conjure the chaos?
Without a doubt, this novel has a super creative premise. Sure, we’ve all heard the creepy kids stuff before, but this is a fresh take and the ending... never seen anything like it. The writing was descriptive and lovely. Great line editing. You can tell the author put a lot of care into what’s on the page.
My only complaint was that it’s too short. Just shy of 100 pages, this could have been expanded into a 250 or 300-page story and it would have amped up the creep factor further. There were some missed opportunities to let more uncanny incidents accumulate. There were also some times when exposition glossed over the details I wanted to read on the page. To be sure, this wasn't always the case. Many times it was on the page. And when it was, it was so good I got greedy and wanted it all the time.
I liked this novella a lot, and read it in one straight shot. And I wanted more. Give me the lore. Give me the backstory. Give me more time with this creative atmosphere. I’ll def check out more of this author’s work. Oodles of talent and creativity!
ok, can we first of all just talk about the cover of this book?? It's absolutely STUNNING. I had no idea it was a mouse, until i got to the ending credits of the book. I definitely thought it was SMOKE. Had no idea it was a damn mouse until I got to the end credits of the book. 🤣
Anyway, poor little Craven. It's SO unfortunate when parents make serious life-altering decisions and don't care about how those decisions affect their children, and the poor kid has to suffer for it. LMAOOOOOOO!!! Because WHY wouldn't you listen to your child, who is ADAMANT about NOT wanting certain changes? Or he's having a hard time adjusting to these changes and they're affecting him negatively??? A new adopted sibling? A new step parent? A move to a big dumb ass new house? I'm not saying that we have to cater to a child's every whim or to only what they want in life....but if you see (Especially AHEAD of time) that this dramatic change is negatively affecting your child mental health....why go through with it?? WHY open up a CAN OF TRAUMA?? And Craven KEPT saying he did NOT want an adopted sibling. and NOBODY listened to this kid. And NOW, he's running for his fucking life from a child demon who carries around a bloody bag of bones
First of all WHY would CPS assign this boy a family and he can't emotionally detach from his bag of bones that he carries around like a PET? Why wasn't THAT investigated or CARED about BEFORE he was handed off to a family, with other vulnerable children?? 8-year-old adoptee Leo gives 14 year old Craven a run for his money and I was here for all of it! I was a little confused on some of the back story as to who Leo birth mother was in relation to Craven's dad etc. So me of the lore was a bit too much for me. But maybe that was just me. FIVE STARS!!
A child is born on a violently stormy night. And a mysterious entity takes the babe from its mother.
Flash-forward eight years later, when a nice suburban couple decides they want to add to their family and they adopt Leo.
From the minute Leo enters the home, he’s a disruptor and his new adoptive brother, fourteen-year-old Craven, can’t understand why no one sees anything wrong with Leo’s dead pet collection.
Wherever Leo goes, trouble follows and not just the Denis the Menace, boys will be boys type trouble, but alarming, dark, evil trouble.
This was a really great read. The cover alone had me shivering; it’s one of the most creepy horror covers, I’ve ever seen.
The story is tightly-written, well-plotted and I love the characterization, especially the power dynamic. For a short book, it packs a punch and has a lot of twists and turns and unexpected surprises.
If you’re into horror and you want to read something quick, fast and short then this book is for you.
“Things had a way of happening, sometimes, just because Leo really wanted them to.”
Talk about a menace to society! Wherever Leo goes, unexplained accidents are never far behind. And trust me…. You do not want to end up on little Leo’s bad side. Kenya Moss Dyme has outdone herself with this one‼️
Written with cinematic intensity, Progeny is a bone-chilling, nail-biting page-turner that will have you in a chokehold from start to finish. This story doesn’t just creep up on you… It snatches you, drags you into the darkness, and leaves you sleeping with the lights on!
If you’re looking for a read that will chill you to your core… THIS. IS. THAT! 1-Click NOW and find out what all my hype is about!
Progeny by Kenya Moss-Dyme is a compelling story of suspense and terror. It begins with an ominous and chilling prologue, and then the intensity grows from there. You won’t want to put it down. I read it in one sitting.
Kenya Moss-Dyme’s superior storytelling is on point in this story. The family’s dynamic and struggles are poignant and vivid, and the suspense and pervasive dread are gut-clenching and relentless. Just as important, though, it’s an excellent story, a fantastic little horror read that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the page. Highly recommended.
Absolutely wild. Creepy kids always get under my skin, and Little Leo will haunt my nightmares for a while! This novella packs a serious punch in such a short space. If you're a horror fan, this is a must-read. The characters are vivid, the atmosphere is eerie, and the pacing never lets up. I especially recommend the audiobook—it adds an extra layer of tension and makes the experience even more immersive. If the author writes more horror, I hope she continues releasing them in audio format, because it's such an accessible and gripping way to experience her stories. 10/10—I need another book from her ASAP.
As a thriller author myself, it takes quite a bit to get a rise out of me. Well, thanks to Progeny, I HAVE RISEN. I read this tale at work, and after a few pages I found myself deeply enthralled. As I continued to read this brilliantly written story I became distraught and unable to hold my tongue. It has to be said… Kenya Moss-Dyme wrote the H E double hockey sticks out of this book! Very well done! Best horror I’ve read, yet! I’m ready for part 2 … please let there be a part 2. I think I’ll have healed enough to read it by then… lol
I loved it! It was straight to the point not too little not too much. Their were moments I had to turn my lights on cause I got a little nervous lol. If you like well put together "unhingery"; Kenya has it right here for you.Come on over to the dark side! I slick want a part two 👀😂 Let me say this cover does not fray from the story at all. The cover eats baby! Let’s not forget those spooky ass chapter headings!!!!!!!!
This was a fantastic, fun, and fast read. The setup was great and it brought a good sense of dread. It's kind of hard to say much about it without spoilers. The beginning is it a bit of slow-burn atmospheric horror, but then everything kind of hits all at once toward the end. I like that it had a bit of humor to it, as well. I think this might be part of series, but I think it ends at an appropriate point.
And I probably shouldn’t have read this on a stormy night. Anywho…
This story left me trembling, checking each corner before I turned off the lights! Claire should have kept her thoughts to herself, what’s understood didn’t need to be exposed. Paul was just too smart for his own good, and poor Craven gonna be in therapy for the rest of his life. SHEESH!
OMG, I thought I was in a horror movie listening to this audiobook! It was so good..😍 I love everything about it!! The way the author builds suspense...I was totally on the edge of my seat🥴 And the narrator's voice is perfect for it, too. The AUDIO VERSION IS TRULY like that. First book from this author definitely want be my last one...
Definitely a unique read!! This book was intriguing from start to finish. This book had a bit of mayhem, grotesquerie, evil, bloodshed, and family bonds. I was enthralled to keep going throughout because of the twists. I wanted to find out what would happen with Craven and Leo. This book is worth picking up if you want a short and disturbing story.
I decided I wanted to read horror, suspense, mystery books etc… for the month of October and this was my beginning. I was not disappointed. But I must say I would have took Leo back to the adoption agency so fast. He was to obsessed with death. And that book bag of pets SMH….Read it!!!!!! You’ll see what I’m talking about…
You know how some covers give you no clue what the book inside is gonna be like?
This aint that.
PROGENY is gross. Decayed. Depraved. It's a meal composed of everything that the cover promises, but add a dash of THE OMEN, then garnish it with a slice of possession horror.
Dark and twisty. Gave me vibes similar to the omen, but a different take. Felt so bad for craven. Really enjoyed the slight gore that was in here and the mystery that surrounded Evangeline. End felt a little rushed for me, but overall, it was a wonderful book
Is Leo a kid that loves to collect dead animals and just so happens to have misfortune follow him, or is it something darker in his DNA? One thing is for sure, you want to keep your hands to yourself, or you will be in big, slobbering, smelly, and terrifying trouble!
This is a short, fast-paced book with something happening on every page. Moss-Dyme takes something we've all read before but makes it fresh and engaging. Plus, there's just a splash of weird to really add an extra kick to things.
I know one thing. Leo's backpack would be outside.
Talk about creepy. Kenya weaves an intriguing tale with twists and turns. But we know from the onset it's something wrong with Leo. I'm not one to shun kids but he'd a had to go! LOL
