Bored with working at his father's shoe shop, Marco goes in search of something more, convinces a talented sculptor to have him as his apprentice, and, soon after, begins to develop his art and create a glorious work of art.
This was an amazing introduction to Renaissance sculpture, depicting, in beautiful full-color paintings, the entire process of creating a marble statue. The apprentice who narrates the story was involved in the entire process, from collecting the marble at the quarry, to marking the design on the rough block, to the final smoothing of the sculpture. CONTENT WARNING: Several illustrations depict nude female nymphs.
Really this book applies to all stone sculpture, but focuses on early Romanticism. It was the same process and material as Michaelangelo, who dabbled in some later movements. If there’s only one book on substractive sculpture you read, let it be this one. You will never underestimate Michelangelo’s David ever again.
Somewhat interesting and different picture book where the main protagonist learns about sculpting marble. Almost non-fiction with a lot of detail around the art of sculpting and the frustrations that come with it. Interesting little book.
