An explosion rocks a Qatari natural gas facility... a luxury cruise liner capsizes in the Mediterranean... and someone has stolen a submarine...

Are the events connected?
Dan Taylor doesn't believe in coincidences - all he has to do is convince his superiors they are next in the terrorists' line of fire.

As Britain enters its worst winter on record, Dan must elude capture to ensure the country's energy resources are protected. At all costs.

In an action-packed adventure, from the Middle East through the Mediterranean to London, Dan and his team are on a quest which will test every choice he makes. Number 2 in the Dan Taylor series and it was a teeny bit better than book 1, White Gold, because the plot was slightly more believable. Though it still needed the reader to suspend belief!

But that is what makes this kind of thriller thrilling - outrageously horrible villains, heroic main characters who can suffer almost anything and bounce back without a single visit to a hospital and stunningly beautiful women who can do anything a man can do. All good fun!

Under Fire has all those things plus an excellent story, lots of action and a totally unforseen and amazing twist at the end. Very well worth reading.

When Dan Taylor received the call to return to London for an urgent job, he had no idea what would follow. Having spent some time in the desert at the General’s side, the miserable and extreme cold of London was a great difference to the heat he had been enjoying. But when his boss, David informed him of their suspicions, he understood that the next days would test everything they had previously known – the danger was intense; they would have to fight the threat with everything they had.

When a tanker at a Qatari natural gas facility exploded into flames and sank, Dan and his team knew their suspicions were correct. The kidnapping of an eminent scientist took precedent – they needed to find him before it was too late. The theft of a submarine and the unexplained attack on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean had horrible connotations as well – everything was happening too fast. The clock was racing and Dan, Mitch and Antonia were running out of time.

But was it all as it seemed?

I thoroughly enjoyed Under Fire by Aussie author Rachel Amphlett. She is fast becoming one of my favourite authors; her fast paced and action packed novels are always intense and heart stopping. A totally pleasurable and quick read, I have no hesitation in recommending Under Fire, which is the second in the series, highly.

Oh, oh, oh. How to begin this review? Do you have any idea how hard it is listening to an audio book of an action thriller, feeling yourself gravitating to the edge of your seat and then realising that you can’t because you’re driving and the steering wheel (and your concerns for your own safety) are in your way? Well, that’s what i went through while listening to Under Fire, the second instalment in the Dan Taylor series by Rachel Amphlett. Narrated by Craig Beck, this was perhaps even more tense and exciting than White Gold had been as our intrepid hero put himself in harms way to stop a terrorist attack which was designed to interrupt the fuel supply across the UK, with global economic and diplomatic repercussions.

Everything about this book screams tension, from the early scenes where Dan nearly blows himself up while disarming a bomb in a controlled exercise, through to the early attacks on fuel supplies in Qatar amongst many other terrorist activities. And with Dan not entirely off the hook with regard to the goings on which saw him preventing a terrorist attack in the City during White Gold, his life and more literally his freedom, depends on his ability to solve the case before the worst can happen.

Each of the characters in this book are very well developed and rounded, I have really grown to like Dan, the ultimate action hero, across these first two books. Nothing seems to phase him and even though he has a traumatic past, his dedication to the safety of the country is unwavering. And Mitch. What can you say about him? the exact opposite of Dan, he has a definite lovable rogue quality about him.

As I say, I listened to the audio version of this book and it was once again narrated to perfection by Craig Beck. He really managed to capture the tension of the situation in his narration, each character having their own quirks and ticks which made it easy to follow. And there were a lot of twists in this book, a huge number of action sequences in which subtle changes in narration really captured the stresses the characters were under. Brilliantly done.

I have to be honest, and give full credit to the author for this, but despite knowing who the enemy was throughout, which country it was that was trying to sabotage the supply of fuel to the UK by Qatar, I was still taken by surprise by the ending. I had not seen it coming. And it is always good to see strong female characters running through an action book. This was no exception, with both Philippa and Antonia, the daughter of a Qatari Sheik, strong and feisty characters, capable of holding their own amongst the men.

From the very opening chapter, a scene involving the abduction of a computer programmer on a dark a stormy night, Rachel Amphlett delivers a series of assured blows, stunning me, knocking me back with the unexpected and yet drawing me on with the need to see the conclusion. To see how everything tied together. To see if Dan could stop the terrorists before a disaster beyond their imagination could occur. From characters, to setting, to creating white-knuckle tension, Amphlett has put together a brilliant story. And I have to give full credit to her for her skill, as she writes with such confidence and credibility in a genre typically dominated by men. She has really drawn me into this series, and I am keen to read onward, guaranteeing a fan for life in me. I haven’t enjoyed action so much since the early days of reading Tom Clancy novels in my teens.

A tense, shocking and gender challenging 5 stars.

I bought this book because the San Francisco Book Review raved about it, and I wasn’t disappointed. Rachel Amphlett is a woman writing in a male-dominated genre, and she’s doing it with style and aplomb.
Impeccably researched, this fast-paced action thriller drags you relentlessly through the pages, as Dan Taylor, our hero, works to thwart the work of terrorists trying to take out England’s Natural Gas Supply during one of the coldest winters on record.
Helping him is the beautiful, ass-kicking Antonia Almasi, daughter of the Qatari Sheik whose Gas Facility is under threat. Together they race against the clock and around the globe as they try to foil the sinister plan already in motion.
And of course there’s a twist – which I didn’t in any way, shape or form see coming. But I’m not saying any more about that, you’re going to have to buy it and read it to find out.
This is a gritty, gripping, thriller with plenty of action and even a wee bit of romance thrown into the plot. Even though it is the second in a series, it works well as a stand-alone novel.
I don’t recommend ‘Under Fire’ if you need to get to bed early or you have a dinner engagement you can’t get out of, but if you’re after a mesmerising read with plenty of adrenaline rushes thrown in, then this is the book for you.

I would like to thank Goodreads first reads and Rachel Amphlett for my free copy of Under Fire in return for an honest reveiw.

Under fire is the second Dan Taylor novel by Rachel Amphlett. However not having read the first book I found this novel stood on its own quite well.
I think the story started off a bit slow and I understand the author was trying to set the scene but I found some of the lengthy descriptions were irrelevant.I love how the story evovled and changed without giving away too much. Sometimes I found little questions popping up in my head only to find if you keep reading the author has anticipated these thoughts and answered them further in the book. The twist towards the end was a little expected and then there was the twist on the twist. That was unexpected and I love that. It left me finishing the book and thinking "wow, that was good".
I think I will go back now and read White Gold to see where it all started.

Under Fire is book two of the Dan Taylor series by Rachel Amphlett. Dan Taylor does not believe in coincidences when several separate incidents happen. He convinces his superiors there is going to be a terrorist attack. Now it is a race for Dan and his team to protect Britain. The readers of Under Fire will follow Dan and his team to find out what happens.

I love books by Rachel Amphlett, and she did it again with Under Fire. Soon as I opened the first page of Under Fire, I engaged with the characters and the story of this book. I enjoyed the way Rachel Amphlett incorporated the twists and turns into Under Fire. I loved Rachel Amphlett's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. Under Fire is well written and researched by Rachel Amphlett. I like the way Rachel Amphlett describes the settings of Under Fire that allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Under Fire will understand how cold the winter is in England and how to survive. Also, The readers of Under Fire will learn about the North Kent Coast LNG expansion project.

I recommend this book.

Too much

I am not really into international crime stories. The story is well written but over the top for me and far fetched. However In its own way was enjoyable but prefer this author's stories on crime closer to home.

How do we protect our natural resource infrastructure when everything’s controlled by computers? Turn on the TV; pick up a newspaper, there's sure to be something in it about some company or information being hacked. That‘s the heart of this tale.

Dan Taylor is a former British Army soldier injured by an IED over in the sandbox; he's dedicated his life to learning all he can about the favorite tool of terrorists.

Spending the cold winter in Arizona trying to figure the bombs out seems like a great plan for Dan, however an urgent call from his former boss has him flying back to his homeland to team up with his former partner Mitch to look for a missing LNG expert.

Dan, Mitch and David Ludlow their former commander and now the director of a covert department to protect the UK energy resources, have been summoned to a meeting with the Prime Minister and Ministry of defense. They want answers as to how they came to be involved in an earlier plot by terrorists to explode a bomb on British soil and why they decided to handle the situation themselves.

This is book is kind of a hybrid of a crime mystery and military thriller although I would classify it more in the military thriller category.

What does the kidnapping of a computer genius, the attempted destruction of a LNG plant in Qatar, and a missing submarine have to do with the British energy resources?

Winter is coming and it's looking to be a bad season. The draw on natural resources, LNG particularly will be severe and any interruptions in supply will not only cost lives but votes as well and in some circles one is more important than the other.

The clock is ticking on Dan and Mitch. They will need back up. They just hadn't planned on the back up coming in the package it does. The Qatari Sheik whose plant was almost destroyed has insisted that one of his people be on the team. His daughter and she's no wilting flower. Trained in martial arts and a computer genius as well Dan's troubles are just beginning.

Thriller and mystery lovers should have no problems getting drawn into and kept turning page after page of this tale as we see just how vulnerable our infrastructures are and just how hard the people defending us work to keep the bad people from destroying all we hold dear.

This is Rachel's second book and sees Dan Taylor dusting himself off (quite literally!) after Rachel's amazing debut novel White Gold.

I read White Gold in three days. Under Fire was 2.5! (even though it's quite a few pages longer!) I just couldn't put it down and sacrificed sleep to finish it.

The plot is truly outstanding and very relevant to thee current world's energy issues. The detail is amazing and clearly very well researched. Something few people give either consideration or credit for when reading a great book. The plot twist at the end is really something but I can't and won't give anything away or it will ruin what will be a fantastic read.

If you like a fast moving thriller you will LOVE Under Fire! It's a bargain as an ebook so download it now! I've recommended Under Fire to a few friends who have become instantly hooked. One piece of advice though: if you haven't read White Gold yet, buy it and read it first. You'll appreciate Under Fire and all that Dan Taylor has been through that much more although it's still a brilliant stand alone novel for those wanting to dive straight in.

Rachel can we have another sequel soon please?;)

Dan Taylor is back in a second installment as he and a group of people try to figure out how to stop a terrorist group. Wow, what a roller coaster ride! Be prepared with some extra time on your hands, as you won´t want to put this down. The action takes place in various countries around the world, with the outcome taking place in the United Kingdom. There are issues in the book which could be a real threat to some countries in the world, which make it seem more real and exciting.

This is the second Dan Taylor book by the author, but they can be read as standalone novels. It has been well researched and well written; of course, it is fiction though, very fast-paced and hard to put down. And when you think it is over, there is a nice twist, and even a little more. Of course, eventually it does finish. You will be left with an adrenaline rush and wanting more. I enjoyed the Dan Taylor character, a new hero, who could be something we see more of in the future.

Highly recommended if you enjoy thriller, suspense, action, adventure all rolled into one.

Britain is about to experience its coldest winter on record and someone is very determined to ensure that the country's imported gas supplies will fail. It is up to Dan Taylor and his team to find these people and prevent a national disaster.

The action moves from The Middle East to the Mediterranean and to England in this fast-paced thriller. Even as the situation looks like it may be resolved there is a surprising twist!

This is a very well written, readable book with a very believable plot and well drawn characters. It is a story relevant to our times with the underlying themes of resource scarcity and terrorism. Rachel Amphlett is a writer who, I suspect, we are just seeing the beginning of as a very capable and talented writer.

I highly recommend this book.

I got this book by signing up to the author's mailing list and I think as a plan it's worked for me as I will be getting more of her work.
I like the characters, the plot is on the believable side of fantasy and the characters well written. It is also a good balance of modern cyber terrorism and the old school person to person anti-terrorist action, something that I think they tried (mostly successfully) to do with Skyfall in the Bond series. There were two slight holes in my opinion, one minor, one reasonably serious, but I can forgive those, especially as this is either the first or a very early book in her series.
Overall, a nice read and a recommended from me.

Just loved this book!

Fast paced and full of excitement! Author keeps you guessing to the very end who the bad guys are. Dan has so much love for his country, and wants to stop terrorism cold. I will have to buy the third novel in the series to see what happens next. I been telling friends how much I enjoyed author books and telling them to get them to read. I finished this one in two days. I don't like to give details of books away because that just like telling someone the ending of a movie, which if this book was ever made into a movie I would go see it. Great job Rachel keep it up. A big fan!

When I got the book, I actually didn't know what to expect and the cover didn't help eiter... so I had put it asside for a while... what can I say... a mistake I made that won't be done again (I hope).

Rachel Amphlett's Under Fire is a smooth and well writte story with twists and turns every good thriller must have. It's up to date so the threats and actions are belieable.

As for me, I can say... my trip over the Channel with the ferry will never be the same again... and that's another point of a great story.

Under Fire. Rachel Amphlett

An extraordinary and chilling action packed story!! A scenario that hopefully would never occur, but very possible. England is in one of it's coldest winters in recent history. They are dependent on natural gas. They own supplies and production is depleted. Ripe for someone to form a devious plot. Immense wealth and power is ready for the taken! Dan Taylor and his team are again brought into to stop this madman and his accomplices. Deceit and betrayal. A stupendous read of the highest order. I highly recommend!!

Dan Taylor is back!

So pleased that Rachel Amphlet has followed on after White Gold. I was waiting for this new book expectantly and wasn't disappointed.

This is an excellent story, giving rise to thoughts of 'could this happen for real?' and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.

Dan Taylor has his work cut out in trying to stop disaster happening. Very good characters, well researched plot, well written and fast paced this is a 'must read' book.

The basic story line was good, however there were some parts that were beyond. Such as the main villain capabilities outside of the Iran government-been there could not happen.
