About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

These Sherlock Holmes stories are far more entertaining than I expected. I love Doyle's 'The Lost World' and his Professor Challenger character, but consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson are completely different. The mysteries may be more or less unmemorable, but the characters is what makes these stories for me. I like the role Watson plays as Holmes' unofficial biographer, and occasional side-kick. I also found Mrs Watson amusing in her encouragement of getting Dr. Watson out the house to help Sherlock - obviously she wants some alone time. Too bad she didn't last long. Sherlock's' foibles are also fairly amusing, not to mention the reaction of his clients and onlookers when he explains his reasoning and solves the mystery. It's too bad that there also isn't more of Mycroft Holmes (and his Diogenes Club), who is just too lazy to be bothered to do anything physically strenuous, but is still around to help his brother out occasionally. I'm also surprised at how limited Professor Moriarty's page time is given his reputation as Holmes' equal in intelligence, and the subsequent fuss made out of him in modern adaptation. On coming to the end of the Sherlock Holmes collection, I find that I enjoyed the short stories more than the novels, which tend to digress too much. The stories provide an atmospheric snap-shot of Victorian London and provide entertaining moments in the company of an interesting character and his long suffering friend.

I had never before read a Sherlock Holmes story. It purchased this beautiful version when I went to visit the museum earlier this year. I was surprised to find them incredibly readable - the passing of time has not made them any less accessible or enjoyable. A wonderful set of stories about 2 fascinating men.

Took a long time to read, partly due to school and work, but great stories. Loved the writing and interesting to see where it all started and compare it with modern interpretations.

This is a huge undertaking as the Audible edition I am listening to is unabridged and I am not skipping a single story or novel. In total, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote over 1100 pages about this iconic detective figure!

The Complete Sherlock Holmes includes his complete writings with the character of Sherlock Holmes. I have been reading this Audible version late at night, a story at a time, never combining two detective stories. I will not attempt a complete review of this immense collection, but will give a basic index of the writings included. Some are very short tales; others are full-length novels.

I will certainly re-read my favorite stories again in hard copy, as I find that method sustains memory better than the audible version. But what a great way to wind down, in bed, after a long day of dizzying activity. I LOVE Sherlock Holmes!

The book cover is beautiful! This book is a complete collection of all 56 short stories and 4 novels about Holmes and Watson. The forward written by Dr. Michael Crane provides a fascinating overview of Doyle's life and how he developed these stories.

"We all sat in silence for some minutes, while those fateful eyes still strained to pierce the veil."

I can't believe I'll never read another new ACD Holmes story again :(
