With her pale hair and slim figure, Olivia Donovan looks as fragile as fine china, and has been treated as such by her sisters ever since a childhood bout with malaria. But beneath her delicate facade, Olivia guards a bold, independent spirit and the kind of passionate desires proper young ladies must never confess...
It was a reckless wager, and one Max couldn't resist: seduce the alluring Olivia or forfeit part of his fortune. Yet the wild, soon-to-be Duke never imagined he'd fall in love with this innocent beauty. Nor could he have guessed that a dangerously unpredictable rival would set out to destroy them both. Now, Max must beat a Madman at his own twisted game-or forever lose the only woman to have ever won his heart.
This the second book int he Donovan Sisters series, I still think the title is a bit misleading, however the story was nice and I enjoyed it very much. The H/h were very likeable people especially the H..so understanding and patient. The story did have its moments of predictability, however the enemy made for the twists and turns in the story.
I love stories where there is a gradual relationship to "Love" and it did have its share of intimate moments. This second book was a change from books 1 and 3 for me. It didn't hurt that Kate Reading did the narration...love her narrations.
I thought the rating for this was going to be so much higher. I was so into it. I loved the affair between Max and Olivia. I loved how she was different from her family and had a secret illness that kept her apart. I loved Max and his devotion to Olivia. They had a love at first sight romance that actually worked for me and developed deeper with time.
But. And this is a big but...the ending was horrible. Not that there wasn’t an HEA but the final climax was so crazy and unrealistic and unfinished.
I feel like this one had too much plot going and probably should have been streamlined a bit. The villain got too much page time. He was so awful and then it all just kind of ended and the fallout from the final scenes were just glossed over.
I hate when big things happen and you know there will be fallout and it isn’t explained. Everyone is just seen down the road happy without any explanations of how they got there. It’s a shame really because even with the drama earlier in the book and the improbable amount of private time Max and Olivia got together, I was into it. Haymore’s sex scenes are good, her leads were likable and the romance was charged and sweet. But then things got crazy with the villain and the romance got buried in plot and I finished the story bummed that I wouldn’t have any more answers. Such a bummer since this had so many ingredients I like!
The first third to half of this book was utterly amazing with an engrossing and over the top romantic love story. If the middle and last part of the book were like this as well, I would have definitely given this one 5 stars and more! However, the middle and later parts of the book were consumed with the villain and some less than believable kidnapping and murder plots. Which was really disappointing, because the main characters and romance were so fantastic! Still, since I loved the first part so much, I'm giving this one 4.5 stars and whole heartedly recommending it to romance fans.
Max and Olivia were so very sweet together, they had a romance that was free from all the petty squabbles and misunderstandings we see so often. It did seem jarring that they hopped into bed so quickly, just because Max was so respectful and it seemed out of character for Olivia too. However, I do see how this was necessary to the overall plot, especially the villians' motives, etc.
I really love the supporting cast of this book. Both Jonathan and Serena (Meg?) were back in a big way. Jonathan was truly adorable as the overprotective brother in law (another reason why the aforementioned bed hopping didn't work for me). And I'm thrilled Captain Langley was back as well. I absolutely cannot wait for his story next. I am so happy with the direction his story is headed in and I have to add "I knew it!"
The romance between these two leads is just the sort of sweet, all consuming love that I love to read about. The only drawback is that not enough time was focused on the romance, and too much attention was on the villain.
book sent by publisher in exchange for honest review
This was a great series. It swept me away, with emotion that jumps out of the pages. I couldn’t put this one down! The characters were all interesting. It has interesting twists I didn't expect. The romances described in the book are wonderful, and Max and Olivia are a perfectly matched pair.
Thanks to the publishers and the teams at Net Galley for making this advance copy available to me for review.
This is the first time I've heard of Jennifer Haymore, and had I known what to expect I most likely would have passed the opportunity to read her work. This isn't going to be a positive review.
The title is misleading. There really weren't that many secrets this accidental duchess had and the ones there were, were revealed quite quickly and without in a timely fashion. His secrets too.
There really should be a series warning for all unsuspecting readers. Not that I was one of them. I knew I was jumping in in the middle of a series, but that wasn't the problem. The problem was the extensive character gallery I was expected to familiarise myself with immediately. To this moment I wouldn't be able to name and place all the important side characters. I barely remember the main characters, but that has more to do with the poor characterisations or lack thereof. More about that later.
From the very start I realised that Haymore's writing style wasn't for me. I happen to think there's a difference between detailed and florid–one of which is good and the other one isn't–I thought she crossed that line, although, it did get slightly better when action overtook the moment.
Speaking of things that were better than expected, the sex scenes were a positive surprise. Despite the fact that the her happiness was dependent on his orgasm, there was nothing too awkward or unintentionally hilarious. I found these scenes quite titillating, which is a first in a professionally published work for a while.
Having said that, I still think there was more passion between Max and his rival Fenwicke than there ever was between Max and Olivia. That's because of the characterisations. Max and Olivia both felt so flat and uninteresting in comparison that over the top evil Fenwicke appeared to the only three dimensional character in the book. I could have handled the brutality and the abuse described, had it been properly addressed and not been reduced to a mere plot device. Fenwicke was nothing more than a ploy to create drama and angst where none was needed as the relationship between Max and Olivia had its existing inner tensions.
What's worse, neither Fenwicke or his victims were addressed with enough care or attention, but they were quickly dismissed as their part in the storyline expired.
I could dwell on the idiocy of the two main characters exhibited throughout and especially towards the end of this book, but suffice to say that there's a reason why I shelved this book under the too-stupid-to-live category. I'm not just talking about the contradiction between a gentleman willing to seduce a virgin but reluctant to fight dirty when being attacked by a mob, I'm talking about the lack of pure survival instinct. He'd rather beat up a man in his weakened state than run to save her life.
I'm aware that my generation nor that the one of my parents'–or their parents'–invented sex, but to read about sisters–one of which is an unmarried virgin–talk about contraception sounded too modern to fit the time to me. There was also another instance, when Olivia was asking Max to give her space, that felt out of place in this historical setting.
Also as detail orientated as the author is, I was surprised how easily Olivia could wolf down her meal despite the injury to her throat.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
This was surprisingly fun, I didn't know anything about the author or the series, I only picked up because it showed on a video for primadonna by marina and the diamonds. the relationship was cute and had a nice construction, but the kidnapping plot was really lame.
"If she did not succumb to my charms, Halsley, then rest assured, there's no way in hell she'll succumb to yours." Fenwicke's voice was mild, but the cords in his neck bulged above his cravat.
Max shook his head, unable to prevent a sneer from forming on his lips, "You're wrong, Fenwicke."
Fenwicke's brows rose, his eyes glinted, and a sly expression came over his face. He leaned forward, greedily licking his lips.
"Would you care to place a wager on that?"
Two men rivals for years...
He thought she should be honored by his indecent proposal. He was just after the chase.
One woman who wasn't looking to get involved...
She was bent on never marrying nor trifling with men. She had come to the conclusion marriage just wasn't in the cards, and she'd long ago given up on that dream.
One small wager...
That would lead to nothing but TROUBLE... Will men never learn?
Have your eyes ever connected with those of another individual's across a crowded room and you became instantly aware of them? Like some magnetic force caught you in it's grip and you just couldn't look away? That is how it happened with Olivia and Max. No introductions were made. No words were exchanged, but each was instantly made aware of the other and would not soon forget.
Olivia had been afflicted with Malaria many years ago. While nobody could contract the disease from her, it had driven many potential suitors away. She'd decided to give up any thoughts of marrying and decided to be satisfied with being the doting spinster aunt to her sisters' children. She is smart, sweet, strong willed and the type to tell it like it is in a gentle fashion. She may have a life threatening illness, but she doesn't let it keep her down and attempts to live her life as normally as she can.
Max had a reputation for being a unrepentant rake and had decided never to marry. His father had a temper that Max had seen first hand. He himself occasionally felt a fury building up inside himself and feared it would one day be unleashed. He decided long ago he would never subject another individual to it especially a wife.
Fenwicke was a married man who thought himself above the rules of society. Being a Marquis with the possibility of one day becoming a Duke he did as he pleased. This time, however, he was about to take that attitude a bit too far.
When Max and Olivia Max finally met, he soon forgot all the wager he'd made with Fenwicke, as he did with so many of their other wagers. The problem was Fenwicke wasn't the type to forget or, for that matter, forgive. Max would soon regret ever having made that wager.
This was a slightly dark story with a sinister villain. The characters were easy to empathize with and like, that is with the exception of one character, namely Fenwicke. There were many tense moments and a lot of drama. The relationship between Max and Olivia was fun to watch as it grew and shifted into something neither expected. Plus, the strong relationship among the sisters was nice to see. I must confess I've grown pretty fond of Captain Langley, so I'm glad that it looks like he'll finally have his happily ever after in the next book.
Where did the book get it's name? I believe from this slightly spoiler filled passage: "She was going to be a duchess. But that was simply an accidental side-effect of what she was truly going to become, of what she truly wanted: to be Max's wife."
I gave this one 4 out 5 roses. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one gets a STEAM rating. Too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.
The follow up to Confessions of an Improper Bride, Jennifer Haymore once again unites us with the Donovan sisters from book one. Olivia is unknowingly caught up in a vicious wager between the wild, young, and rather reckless soon-to-be duke, Max Wakefield.
It's a rather ungentlemanly wager that both he and the odious Lord Fenwicke become involved in. And this is only the start of the book! Fenwicke is a bad seed, that much is certain. It's not a spoiler to say just how bad he can get before the end of the story.
This is why the author creates such a good story. Her characters are fully realised, and we feel like we know each one as they take their part in the book.
What slightly stops this from being a five star read is the length of the story. It could have been trimmed by 50 pages or so and been utterly amazing. But as it stands, it is a worthy successor to the first (and arguably better book).
As with most HR's, there's love, there's confusion, there's debts to be paid and waived, and somewhere along the line, something more deeper, and more meaningful. This is why the author is one of the best HR writers out there, in my view. Both books in the series so far have been solid and entertaining, but also have the capacity to surprise - this book certainly does that.
As with the first book, the descriptive narrative is excellent. Main Bad Guy truly is a horrendous creation by Miss Haymore. Does it matter that he seems to have no redeeming qualities? No. We want him to be bad, because he brings colour to the story that would otherwise be a will they or won't they get together romance. He brings a dangerous angle to the story, and it is not for certain that Olivia will live to see her sister from book one again, or to survive this actual tale.
Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, I will now be looking up the next in the series. 4.5 stars.
Cheat: Before you read this book, know that Serena/Meg is Serena a surviving twin who has to live as Meg because she was caught with her husband having sex in the first book & banned from London. The only ones who know are her sisters, Johnathan (her husband) & Lord Langley her previous fiance, the real Meg's formally betrothed. It never says why she can't be called Serena, so if you read this one firs it will frustrate the hell out of you. It is NOT a spoiler, because that's what the whole first book is about. You find out in the first chapter of that book.
I love evil people in the 1800's or before... They are purely evil and there is nothing you can do because there isn't anything illegal about it, so you just have to figure out a way to secretly kill them off! It must have been nice! LOL!
Olivia is a dainty sickly young woman who has reocurring bouts of fever that leave her weakened from malaria she had as a child. She is coddled by her family & catches the eye of Max who will soon inherit the title of Duke.
Max, in a fit of irritation with a rival (evil doer) signs a wager that he can seduce Olivia. His rival failed and was angered by Olivia's rebuff (even though he's married!) Hence the bet. He said she was ice cold.
Max & Olivia become victims of so said evil doer & it was exciting. I wanted to reach through and throttle him myself. sigh. You know how it goes.
Great book. Fun and exciting. Reference to the first book was mentioned several times & and left things hanging, so i felt like I wasn't in on it, although for this story it made no difference. The constant reference to the name change bugged me, so I gave it a 4.
Olivia Donovan has resigned herself to a life without love and a husband. Quite depressing when you think about it. But after suffering an illness that has weakened her constitution, and has relapses. She feels her place will be with one of her sisters when they are married and have children. She can help and find fulfillment in that aspect of her life.
Fate intervenes and she meets Max Buchanan. As a reader it is not hard to like Max. He shows Olivia that there is more to life and she can do anything she wants. The secrecy of her health was unnecessary, but later it does give Max a better picture on why her family protects her so much.
There is a definite villain in this story that is an awful, awful character. His storyline is a strong secondary story along with his poor wife.
Secrets of an Accidental Duchess started off as a stronger story than book one, Confessions of an Improper Bride. But quickly fizzled and in my opinion is a forgettable book once read. This reader is chalking it up to finding an author that doesn't work for me. And I will not continue with this series. I recommend this book only to fans of the series.
Heroine: Olivia Donovan, 21. Newly arrived from the West Indies and is staying with her sister the Countess of Stratford.
Hero: Maxwell Buchanan, 30. Nickname: Max. Marquis of Hasley and heir to the Duke of Wakefield.
Date: unknown
How they meet: Max is captivated when he sees Olivia at a ball. He later meets her at her brother-in-law's hunting party when they are both out for a walk.
What happens: Max is determined never to marry, thinking he won’t make a good husband. He is so taken with Olivia, he can’t turn down the chance to spend some time with her. She, too, doesn’t see marriage in her future. As their friendship grows, they share that neither intends to marry, although Olivia doesn’t tell him it is because she is suffering the after-effects of a childhood malaria infection. Olivia likes the fact that Max sees her as a capable woman and not someone to be coddled. Their friendship grows and they begin what is intended to be a brief affair.
Trigger Warnings:
Verdict: I dnf-ed this one just past the half-way point due to the unbelievable depravity of the villain and what appeared to be the set up for a long period of imprisonment and torture of the hero and heroine. This level of violence and threats of violence and overall depravity of the villian (driven by mental illness, I’d guess) in this book just isn’t entertaining. I have enjoyed this author previously, but I was so sickened by this book I won’t read her again. Up until I quit in disgust, there were other issues with the book. The hero made an ill-conceived bet at the beginning, the details of which were only hinted at but it was obvious it was going to cause problems later. This fact was a black cloud hanging over the story. The hero then more or less stalks the heroine by attending a party he had already planned to skip, then out of the blue he is suddenly a kind, open-minded friend to her. The change happened so suddenly it felt like inconsistent character development rather than some sort of personal growth. I liked the heroine a bit more. She had always been coddled by her family and the hero treated her as a normal, healthy woman, which was liberating for her. However, knowing that at any moment his bet was going to be a punch in the gut to her, I couldn’t enjoy their burgeoning romance. I also felt there were a lot of historical inaccuracies. It is not my practice to bash on books and I get that people’s preferences are different, but if you are a sensitive person, please read the trigger warnings for this book before deciding to read.
This was such an amazing story. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book as much as Secrets of an Accidental Duchess. Olivia and Max were such wonderful characters. I loved reading their story and watching their romance develop. Max especially...I don't know where a more kind, compassionate, and honorable hero exists. You're lead to believe he's some kind of rouge or rake...but that is nothing like his true character. Not even a little bit. Honestly, the bet he makes with the story's villain in the beginning is completely out of character. It's totally forgotten by the 2nd or 3rd chapter and you're left with their natural friendship that develops into something more. Olivia is just as fascinating. She is a strong woman...though of course somewhat weak physically because of her illness...and she knows what to expect out of life. She makes choices that let her live her best life despite being surrounded by her overprotective family because of her ongoing malaria fevers. She was just a breath of fresh air...she was so honest and so affectionate. You can see how Max fell in love with her.
The drama with the villain did get a little over the top near the end, but it really doesn't matter. The protagonists were just so captivating and their romance was so thrilling all the rest just faded away. I really just want to pick it up and start it all over again. I loved it that much!
Olivia Donovan expects nothing from life but to become a spinster and live among her sisters. A childhood bout of malaria has left her with frequent fevers and her sisters worry over her constantly. She doesn't expect any man to take a chance on a woman with poor health -- one that may not even be able to have children. But that doesn't mean she can't appreciate the looks of a handsome man when she sees it.
Max is certainly a handsome man. When he first noticed Olivia at a London ball, he was instantly smitten. He even accepted a hunting invitation from her brother in law to get close to her. And the two of them get along famously. It's clear they are made for one another, but they create problems for themselves. Both swear they will never marry: Olivia, because of her illness. Max's reasons are much murkier. His dad treated his mom poorly and he doesn't want to ever hurt a woman that way --or some ridiculous nonsense.
Even worse than Max's "reasons" for bachelorhood, was an inane bet he made with an acquaintance at the very beginning of the book. You know, one of those "gentlemen's bets" over who could get Olivia in the sack. Which means that you know from the Prologue that the bet will kick them in the teeth just as soon as they fall in love. And it does. Fortunately, there is more to the story after that... namely, some danger from the smarmy man on the other end of the bet. But while I believed in the threat Fenwicke presented, he was a pretty one dimensional villain.
Despite my complaints, I did like both main characters. It was a gentle romance. It wasn't rushed and I found it believable. Plus, the sex was good.
This is the second story in the Donovan Sisters series. And I think I enjoyed it more having read Confessions of an Improper Bride. References were made to the events of that book which were not fully explained... and while new readers could still enjoy the story, they'll likely realize they were missing something. I didn't like this installment quite as much as the first one, but I do plan to keep reading, in hopes that the missing sister Meg will one day come back for her happy ending. 3 1/2 stars.
The cover is the first thing that caught my eye, the coloring, the gown, all made me immediately think of romance. I received this books as an advance copy and I was not aware at the time that this was part of a series, A Donavan Novel. The author provided a background of what had transpired so I did not feel lost. I would have liked to see more on Serena (Meg) so I could understand her relationship with Langley, there I did feel like I was missing the "big picture". Suffice to say, I will be purchasing the first book, Confessions of an Improper Bride, in the series so I can come full circle with the series.
Well let's get on with my thoughts…If you are a follower of mine on goodreads, you know that I updated my reading status on this book earlier on.. "I'm reading Secrets of an Accidental : Not connecting~not holding my attention. It may be set in Regency era but reads more modern day." I was going to put it down and move on to the next book in my pile, but I saw some great reviews on this book I knew I needed to give it a second chance. And am I so happy I did, it was right after I wrote my status update that the storyline captured me and didn't let me go until I read the last line.
This book went from 0 to 60 in no time flat. My head was spinning with everything that was going on, there was a the heroine's life threatening illness, a wager on seducing the heroine, not one but two kidnappings, the heroine went from a from virgin to an insatiable lover, there was an abused wife, a rape, a miscarriage, oh my... And without giving too much away, by far the most evilest villain I have read in a historical romance.
I would recommend this book, but be forewarned it starts off slow and a bit confusing and then it goes into overdrive. You will enjoy it!!
I received this advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
First Impression: A unique heroine and a dastardly villain stand out in this sweeping Regency romance.
What Really Worked: I was quite drawn in by Max and Olivia’s love story. Olivia was a rather unique heroine. She contracted malaria as a child, and she still suffers from terrible fevers because of the disease. She’s convinced that no man would want her as a wife due to her frail body and bouts of illness. Max, however, falls hard for her regardless.
The book starts out with a wager between Max and the unpleasant Marquis of Fenwicke. The bet is that Max will not be able to seduce the seemingly “frigid” Olivia. I was a little concerned, because this set up doesn’t exactly grab my attention. The bet is all but forgotten after a few chapters when thing get very interesting. I think what really spiced up this story was the simply dreadful villain, Fenwicke. I won’t reveal his dastardly deeds here. You must discover them for yourself and be as angry at him as I was!
What Worked: I really enjoyed the close, protective relationship the four Donovan sisters shared. The first book in this series was Serena Donovan’s story, though I have not read it yet. There were only a couple of times where I felt I was missing something by not having read the first book. Overall, the author did a great job presenting the sisters’ backstory.
What Didn’t Work So Much: I kept waiting for Max to turn into the bad boy he claimed was lurking beneath the surface, but it never happened. His greatest fear (and the reason he refused to marry) was that he’d become an abusive monster like his father, but I never saw any evidence of that. That’s not a bad thing. I just wasn’t convinced it was a reason for him to stay a bachelor.
Final Thoughts: Enjoyable! SECRETS OF AN ACCIDENTAL DUCHESS is a captivating read for fans of Regency romances.
Twenty- one year old Olivia Donovan believes no gentleman would ever want her, after all men want someone who is healthy, not someone like her who could fall ill and perhaps die at anytime from a relapse of malaria that had struck her as a child. She figured her destiny would be to live alone, so she had stopped wishing for a husband and children. When she catches the eye of thirty year old Maxwell Buchanan, he becomes entranced by her and makes a wager that he can seduce her, never anticipating that he just might fall in love with her. Will Olivia and Max find their happily ever after, or will someone try to stand in their way?
There were things that I really enjoyed about this book, but a few things that I didn't. First of all I really enjoyed watching the romance grow between Olivia and Max. I was pulled in from the beginning, with Max being unable to take his eyes off of Olivia because of the reserved way she held herself. For me I was a bit surprised at that because in the first sentences I really thought he was going to be a rakish devil, instead he wasn't that at all! I really enjoyed the character of Olivia. She really didn't want to be treated like a delicate flower. She really was a strong woman willing to stand by those she loved. The thing that I didn't like about this story was the bits of predictability. The wager that Max made has been done in many romance novels and ultimately the man that makes the wager always falls in love with the woman. When I picked up this book I didn't realize that it was actually a part of a series, and while there was a few times I felt as if I was missing something it didn't really affect the story, but I enjoyed this book so much that I do intend to read the book that preceded it.Overall I really enjoyed this story and will certainly be watching for the next book in the series.

SECRETS of an ACCIDENTAL DUCHESS by Jennifer Haymore 01/12 - Grand Central Publishing - Mass Market Paperback, 432 pages
What happens when you most unbelievable dreams come true?
Olivia Donovan grew up in a house full of sisters being viewed as the weak link. Having contracted malaria as a small child Olivia knows that every day she is susceptible to a recurrence of the fevers. Olivia does not want to be treated like a china doll on a shelf and the minute she meets Max, her wishes for adventure may come true.
Max never thinks of Olivia as frail or less than perfect, he sees her beauty and yearns to place a gentle hand on Olivia’s beautiful face. Max is more than interested in Olivia and the ridiculous bet he made to win her affection have nothing to do with his intention. Being competitive has made Max strong but the mere sight of Olivia astounds him and there is no amount of compensation for that reward.
When Olivia chooses adventure over sedentary the game she and Max begin to play is dangerous with severe consequences. Olivia throws care to the wind and goes after the one thing she has always wanted and feared she would never have intimacy. Her life is too set in one direction, shifting the sand is going to be fun.
With all the joy in the forefront, neither Max nor Olivia could see the darkness right behind them. The entire Donovan family is taking on a mad, cruel man bent on ruining Olivia just because it will hurt Max. When both of them are shocked with the severity of this man’s vendetta Max and Olivia wonder who will come to the rescue of these two lost souls.
Jennifer Haymore writes intriguing, detail orientated stories wrapped around the most glorious depths that is the romance of love. The scenarios and details that Ms. Haymore creates make every reader feel as if they too are being held captive by the magic that is the blush of true love.
I loved the first book in this series, Confessions of an Improper Bride and can happily say I think I enjoyed Secrets of an Accidental Duchess even more.
Max was one of the sweetest historical romance heros I’ve read and he certainly found his perfect match with Olivia.
The villain was one of the worst I’ve encountered in an historical romance. He was just vile and I couldn’t wait to see him get what he deserved.
I have read the first book in this series and really enjoyed it (just noticed that I hadn’t rated it on Goodreads, if I don’t do it immediately I tend to forget). I am really looking forward to the next book in this series, the return of Serena’s twin sister Meg, who disappeared some eight years earlier and is believed dead all that time.
Started out strong, but became very cliche toward the end. The villain is over the top mean and ridiculous and the reasons the H/H don't want to marry is weak. They're willing to have an affair but then if a child is created because of it, they'll marry. Seriously, been there, done that scenario we've seen time and again. It's old and stale.
"Absolutely loved this book, Olivia is constantly reminded that she is frail, but despite it all she has a bit of a rebellious nature that makes her want to step out of what is expected and give herself a chance to really experience life."
This engrossing read grabbed my attention and pulled me into the story. I so love the characters; the Donovan sisters, Max and the other gentlemen associated with them. Although, I thought Max a bit of an idiot at times. Overall, I very much liked this novel. Very easy to read. 4.5* (rounded to 5*)
A pretty decent historical romance novel. There was a dashing rake turned hero, a beautiful heroine, and a brutal bad guy. All the ingredients one needs for a period romance.
This book starts out bad for me. A married man positions a debutante, disgusting. Now the hero sees the debutante and automatically wants her, but does not want to get married, so he is just as disgusting. So because Mr. Disgusting 1 was turned down by the debutante he bets Mr. Disgusting 2, the hero, that he couldn’t get her either. Now I have a problem with the guys from that era, they know that debutantes have to marry with their virginity in tack, but they zero in on them anyway to have affairs. They can go have affairs with widows and married women. I wish they would just leave the damn debutantes alone if they don’t plan on marrying them. Now in this book we know that even though the hero doesn’t want to get married, he falls in love and does marry the debutante. But in the beginning all he wants to do is have sex with her and then move on to the next. I hate these types of books. I need to like both my hero and heroin from the beginning. The debutantes are not that wonderful either. When the hero is a rake and they try to take their virginity, the debutantes need to stop being flattered by the attention and get some sense and backbone and tell them to kick rocks, and not in such a nice way either. I did not make it through the first chapter.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked that it showcased Olivia’s strength, even though almost everyone treated her as fragile and weak because of her illness. I will say that the chemistry/plot was a little bit slow in the first 1/3 or so of the book and I thought about putting it down, but I’m really glad I didn’t. The action and heat really ramp up after that and it’s definitely worth sticking with it.
I definitely recommend this book. That being said, I will note that the ending was a bit strange. I was confused when we got to the and I was only a little over halfway through the book, because I thought for sure that would be the big finale/climax. But then which kind of dragged out the suspense in a weird way. However, both parts were well written and fun to read.
Content warnings, because I always want to know before I start a new author/book:
Olivia suffers from relapse fevers from when she had Malaria as a child so she is the smallest of the Donavan sisters but she's stronger than her family thinks she is. Max sees Olivia across a ballroom and is immediately enchanted by her, unfortunately he runs into one of his least favorite people, Fenwicke always brings out his worst traits and they make a bet whether or not Max will be able to seduce Olivia where Fenwicke failed. Max winds up at the estate where all the sisters are living for about a month and they become friends and then lovers and then he's called away when his uncle dies and he becomes the Duke of Wakefield. So much happens in this book and a lot of it is dark, lots of trigger warnings for this story. Fenwicke is straight up evil, and while he is the catalyst for a lot of this book his actions are a rough read if you're unprepared. However this princess saves herself and others repeatedly which is awesome to see.
TW: miscarriage, rape(not on page), repeated physical abuse, kidnapping/imprisonment
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn't expecting much, since I forgot that I put this book on my tbr after hearing about it from someone on booktube.
It was fun to see the development of introverted and innocent Olivia and rake-ish Max. Olivia was innocent, but she wasn't so naive to the point where it makes it annoying to read. Max is instantly draw to Olivia after seeing her at a ball and wants to get to know her better. I like seeing Max care for Olivia and give her opportunities to see experience life, because her family is overprotective over her. While neither want to get married, they slowly fall for each other and want to experience each other without the attachment.
This book had one of the most despicable villains that I've read in a historical romance. Trigger warnings for abuse (sexual and physical) and sexual harassment.
Really enjoyed the book. Loved Olivia and Max. A very sweet love story. I have enjoyed all the books I have read by Jennifer Haymore. Her books are well written and I get into the story very quickly. They are very steamy romance novels so if you are uncomfortable with that you can skim past it and still see the sweetness of their love story. The villain is rotten to the core and if you are or have been a victim of abuse it is a difficult read. I hate that there is that kind of evil in the world but you also find good in the world. The Donovan women are so lovely and good. The heroes in the series have their flaws like all of us but at their hearts they show us good men do exist.

Welcome to London, playground of the rich and titled. Gossip runs amok in the ballrooms, drawing rooms, carriages and theater of the ton. Wagers are a common thing among the peer whether it's horseflesh, cards or seducing a woman of her virtue.
Spotted: A certain Maxwell Buchanan, Lord Hasley, soon-to-be Duke of Wakefield making a wager with nemesis Leonard Reece, Marquis of Fenwicke, future Duke of Southington, of whether a certain Miss Olivia Donovan, would allow MB to steal more than kisses. Signed and dated, the bet is on. Who have you placed your bets on?
Brace Yourself Sussex! A house party. Is anything as grand or as delightful as a house party? Of course not. This girl has been informed a certain MB and OD have been spotted along the lake feeding geese and feeling an instant attraction that shouldn't be happening. It's been said that OD has her life planned out. She will be the best Auntie to her sisters' children and live with Lord and Lady Stratford. What kind of life is that when a gorgeous soon-to-be Duke has his sights, hands and lips set on you?
Rumor has it... that MB and OD have been spending quite a bit of time together. Walking, talking, playing tennis (isn't that bad for someone who has had malaria and comes down with a fever every once in a while?), stealing kisses, sharing smoldering stares. That's right all you old biddy gossips, there might be something more. Shall we put a wedding in the wager books?
Can You Say Obsessed And Dangerous? Sources inform me that LR is not the man he portrays himself to be. Whispers of 'wife beater' and 'short temper' has been circulating. The sisters Donovan have become quite friendly with his wife who lives next door and has some suspicious looking bruises certainly not from accidentally falling. (Miss Jessica Donovan is willing to risk her life to save Beatrice Reece's. Go girl! No one should have to take that kind of abuse. Ever. Even if he is her husband.) LR is quite the ladies man. He's got women left and right throwing themselves at him even though he's got a wife locked up in his estate in Sussex. How rude! Rumor has it, he even tried to proposition OD in a totally inappropriate fashion. In a dark corner of a London ballroom. Talking dirty doesn't do it for everyone, LR.
Complications! So MB and OD have fallen into a comfortable companionship and it's been rumored that they've done the horizontal tango. Quite a number of times. Apparently if OD is to live her life as a spinster, she might as well enjoy the pleasures of the flesh while it's available to her. But MB has other things in mind. He's come to l-- Dare I say it? Love! And so has she. The only two things standing between them are a frightening relapse of a fever and a bet that was made before they knew each other. *shakes head*
So the real question is: Will OD succumb to the fever and cling by a thread but with the help of MB can overcome it to declare their love for one another or will the revelation of a wager placed on OD's virtue tear them apart. What was real and what wasn't? Was OD just another notch on MB's bedpost?
That's a secret I'll never tell (and you'll have to read if you want to find out)...
XOXO, Romance Girl :)

OVERALL:Uh, why have I not read Jennifer Haymore before? Don't answer that. I've been living under a rock. These are my second favorite Donovans. Seriously. This was such a fun and refreshing story built on intense attraction that should have turned my book into ash, all the while keeping me teetering on the edge as to whether Olivia's sickness would creep up and destroy their budding relationship. Max drew me in from the moment he made that bet with Fenwicke (can you say Creepy Ass Creepy of The First Order?) as to whether Olivia would succumb to his charms to the point of giving up her virtue. My eyes went wide when he accepted it. I'm glad that Olivia has a strong and independent spirit even though she might is constantly struck with fevers (left over from her bout with malaria) and that Max saw her as so even if the gentlemen of the ton would shy away because of it. Never have I ever put down a book so many times just gasping for air. Of all the books I've read this one definitely struck a chord. Domestic abuse is not to be taken lightly or accepted even if a woman does belong to her husband. I wanted to crawl into the pages, shake Beatrice and tell her to run for her life. Of course I wanted to shake her until she came to her senses but then I'd have been no better than her husband. Ms. Haymore, your books have been added to The List.
