About the author

Dale E. Dallman, Senior was born on a hot dry day in Britton, South Dakota, just off the Sisseton Indian Reservation, east of Lake Tewaukon, because that was the closest hospital.
After Dale and a few of his friends got themselves into trouble towards the end of their senior year, a nice judge “suggested” that he and several of his acquaintances join the United States Marine Corps.
The Marines took him to San Diego, CA, Hawaii, Asia and back to San Francisco, CA
Today, Mr. Dallman lives in the south with his wife Cassandra, a professional photographer and singer out of Atlanta, Georgia. He enjoys writing and continues to take great pride in his children and their offspring.

It is rare these days to read a book written with such transparency. This author's writing style was as authentic as his story. Honesty resonated throughout the story as he shared the incidents prompting his initial reasons for joining the Marine Corps as well as his fight to finish boot camp. This memoir was definitely insightful, colorful, and painful at times but often humorous in the manner in which it was told. I found myself laughing at one moment, and tearing up the next. Upon continuing - because it was a page tuner I couldn't put down- I read slack-jawed as the author endured challenge after challenge in order to be broken down and rebuilt as a Marine. Thank your author Dallman for your service, determination, and obedience in writing this rich introspection into the life of a Marine Corps recruit in 1960. This part of history will live on through your book.

This is a fantastic glimpse into the making of a marine in the 1960s. Showing the shift in mindset, the confusion of emotions experienced, and the growth made. It was interesting to read of how some instructors went too far and the consequences faced because of it.
