Reading this story is like watching videos of surfers being towed out in turbulent surf to ride impossibly enormous waves, like they do off the coast of Portugal. You know, since the video has already been posted without a leading headline about disaster, that the surfer will come out the other side of that washing machine surf, but you still hold your breath. That’s how I felt reading this. Martina Gruppo has a gift for storytelling. She’s led an amazing life of adventure and risk taking, and has suffered through loss and grief, but still manages to stand back up again, dust herself off, and power forward once again. Self publishing is yet another risky adventure but here we are! I hope that a publisher picks up this book and sees it for what her readers do.

Hello Flower: A Real Life Story of Narcissistic Love and Invisible Abuse, by Martina Gruppo, is a compelling and insightful non-fiction biographical account that delves into the pervasive and insidious nature of narcissistic abuse. Gruppo's narrative is a stark reminder that narcissism, an often unseen and underestimated form of abuse, can ensnare even the most resilient individuals. The subtlety and unpredictability of this psychological manipulation make it a particularly dangerous form of harm.

In Hello Flower, Gruppo provides victims and readers with the tools to recognize and recover from narcissistic abuse, offering practical advice for those currently in abusive relationships or those who have managed to break free. Her writing is raw and genuine, showcasing her talent as a storyteller and her bravery in recounting her own harrowing experiences of manipulation, humiliation, and mental abuse at the hands of a narcissist. Gruppo's candid reflection on her youthful naivety adds a poignant layer of vulnerability to her story. Gruppo's publicized recounting of her experiences is both urgent and captivating, making the book a gripping read. Her words serve as a soothing balm for those who have endured similar trauma, helping them to identify and understand the disorder. She encapsulates the despair of dealing with a narcissist in a powerful statement: “It doesn’t matter what you do, say, how you dress, or how hard you try—you simply aren’t there. You don't matter.” This painful truth, especially when the narcissist is a close family member or partner, is the first step toward healing.

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand narcissism and its effects. Gruppo's work is not only an educational tool but also a guide for those looking to reclaim their lives and self-worth after enduring narcissistic abuse. Her insights and encouragement help readers emerge stronger and ready to live life to the fullest.

I highly recommend Hello Flower to anyone seeking to learn about narcissistic abuse or to find solace and guidance on their path to recovery. Martina Gruppo's book is a testament to resilience and a beacon of hope for those striving to heal from invisible wounds.

Hello Flower: A real life story of narcissistic love and invisible abuse by Martina Gruppo is a candid and emotionally layered memoir that traces the long arc of a narcissistic relationship and the psychological erosion that can occur when abuse leaves no visible bruises.

Spanning several decades, the narrative captures how manipulation, gaslighting, emotional withholding, and subtle power imbalances can slowly reshape a person’s sense of reality. What makes the memoir particularly resonant is its honesty: Martina does not present herself as naïve or weak. Instead, she shows how even a strong, self-aware individual can be gradually drawn into and trapped within an insidious dynamic.

The tone is self-reflective and at times self-deprecating, which adds authenticity and relatability. Moments of heartbreak are balanced with flashes of dark humor, underscoring the complexity of loving someone who simultaneously diminishes you.

At 258 pages, Hello Flower offers readers both recognition and validation. It speaks to survivors of covert emotional abuse who often struggle to articulate what happened to them because the damage was psychological rather than physical. Most importantly, the memoir moves beyond suffering toward empowerment the courage to leave, reclaim identity, and “shine again.”

This book will resonate strongly with readers of relationship memoirs, trauma recovery narratives, and those seeking insight into narcissistic abuse and healing.

In this memoir of a narcissistic relationship, Martina Gruppo takes us step by step through her experience trying to make a life with the love of her life, an Italian man she meets in her twenties, moves away from, then reunites with some twenty years later.

But her story is not the fairytale she expects and the happily ever after seems increasingly out of reach. Amid significant life challenges (health and bereavement), she remains the only source of work and income while her partner operates in a different reality. Every time she tries to address the situation with him, he turns on her and blames her for her own unhappiness and confusion. His mind-boggling behaviour would be pathetic if it weren’t so insidious and destructive.

After years of struggle the author manages to extricate herself from his grip. I was so happy and relieved she regained her freedom and joy!

Told in a candid and at times humorous voice, this memoir is helpful and instructive for anyone trying to fix a seemingly intractable situation.
