This new historical study of Robert Caldwell’s life and work was commissioned by his missionary society in London, the USPG. Robert Caldwell’s “contribution to both Christianity in South India and the cultural awakening of the region is unmatched during the last two hundred years”. These are the words of Dr MSS Pandian, Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, who has helped edit the book in conjunction with the Rev. Dr. Daniel O’Connor, a Vice-President of the USPG and a former teacher and chaplain at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
Robert Caldwell -- scholar-missionary. Caldwell is popular among Tamil people.
He's not popular in Western World.
Caldwell who came to Tamil Nadu (Madras State), at Age 24, did not speak Tamil (local language). Decades later, he became a Tamil Scholar, contributes to the language.
Because of his contribution, Government of Tamil Nadu erected a statute for him in Marina Beach.
An excellent biography on him. I learnt was that he went through numerous turmoils within the Mission community. He combined Education, and Evangelism uplifted the Shanar community.
I would recommend this to anyone who has cursory interest in Dravidian, South Indian Politics, Christianity in South India, Missionary, Missions, Biographies.
