It's a 7-hour infomercial for a $5,000+ online course
"Dominance is a feeling or a vibe." -Mistress Damiana Chi, PhD
Honesty, I'm not really sure what I was expecting to find here. I guess I was just feeling nostalgic for my baby domme days, back when I took Damiana Chi's online course and listened to her podcast. I was already familiar with her archetypes and the stock photo models representing them. Unfortunately, compared to the warm, inviting energy of the early episodes of her podcast, Chi's narration for this feels more flat and almost robotic.
The audiobook opens with a stern warning about how "it's very important not to skip ahead" so that you don't miss the first hour of cherry-picked client testimonials and proprietary jargon that might sound familiar to readers of Amanda Montell's "Cultish" or Kate Bornstein's "A Queer and Plesant Danger."
The first six chapters are mostly about how wonderful the book is. There's some inconsistent messaging about what Chi claims "being a Dominatrix" is— for example, one moment, she compares it to method acting, then appears to contradict that in a later chapter where she says it isn't acting all, at one point she calls it a "feeling or vibe" before finally settling on it being a "divine transmission."
Chi also makes the bold claim that she is "the only one that teaches real psychological domination" and there are a few moments where it seems like she's about to share an interesting personal anecdote, but slips right back into how great the book is instead.
In the second chapter, she takes a break from telling us about what we're going to learn in the book to propose "kinksexuality" as a new "official" sexual orientation like "heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality." It's an interesting tangent, though she seems to be unaware that there already is a long-standing, shared history between Kink and the LGBTQQIA2S+ community (literally where terms like "top" and "bottom" originally came from).
Fans of cosmo quizzes will enjoy finding out "how much of a domme you are" towards the end of chapter 3, and "what kind of domme you are" in chapter 8. And in case you forget, Chapter 4 opens with a reminder that "this book is about Female Domination and BDSM."
Mercifully, book does eventually stop talking about itself long enough to explain in chapter 8 that Dommes are like chairs, and Chi's archetypes are the legs that make those chairs safe to sit on. She backs up this claim with quotes from her slaves that describe submission as being "like going on Disneyland rides" or "eating cake" among other curious metaphors.
Chapter 9 finally moves away from talking about how great the book is and shifts more into how great her online courses and premium group chat subscriptions are.
In the end, this book raises more questions than it actually answers. If you're looking far an introduction to FemDom, there is nothing substantial in this book that isn't available for free on youtube.
I enjoyed the autoerotic guided meditation at the end, in particular that very clever twist ending where the multidimensional dominatrix turned out to be me all along! I hope Chi puts more things like that in the next book.
Fantastic book, clearly delineated some things I was struggling to verbalize and clarified other things I felt uncertain about. A smidge repetitive though.
Information is great. A LOT of great notes. I did NOT love how much she was in love with herself. There's an entire chapter about how the author is the only dominatrix with a psych background. Not true my guy.
