Forget Me Not: Volume Two

Rate this book
Life didn’t stop for Willow Mansfield after the breakdown of her marriage. She had felt as if it had, but feelings didn’t trump reality. The reality of the situation, her new reality, was quite simple. She was now back to being Willow Francis, with a few different challenges. ‘Divorced single mother’ was a title she never thought she would hold, yet hold it she did, and was doing as good a job of it as she could.
Did she miss her old life? Yes, sometimes she did. Would she ever truly get over her love for Jared? Maybe one day, but for now it was pushed aside. They didn’t share the same reality anymore. As far as she knew, he was happy and that was all that mattered. He was happy with his life, and she was busy trying to be happy with hers.

4.5 stars...

The ending of the first volume of this book -- if this were one single volume book -- would have been the classic third act break up. They broke the fuck up.. as in D.I.V.O.R.C.E. and at Jared's brutal prompting.

Here we jump a year later. Willow is now a single mother. Her and Jared's business has imploded, she sold the house and has moved into an apartment, her relationship with her mother has been repaired, who along with BFF Leah and Jared's BFF Isaac have become a support system and extended family to her and her daughter Vivi.

Jared meanwhile is still happily living his life of five years ago. Well, except for those pesky headaches that keep coming. And these phantom thoughts that pop into his head at random moments that do not relate to or match anything his five years ago self knows or remembers. And the sense that once in awhile he is somewhere he isn't supposed to be.

They are living separate lives.

Until the memories start to trickle back... and then they flood back. And Jared wakes up in the hospital again... a mirror image to what happened when he first suffered his TBI. Only this time it is Simone, not Willow he recoils from. The full horror of what he did comes crashing in on him as his five years of lost memories have returned he realizes he pushed away the love of his life.

Typically this is where readers would clamor for a Big Grovel. I am not one of those readers. The circumstances do not merit that sort of response. I love that the author respected their readers to go a more nuanced route.

To Willow, Jared isn't just some run of the mill jerk husband who cheated on her and left her. She treats the Jared from the last year as a different person. For her, her Jared died. This other guy, isn't her guy. So she treats him and his memory as such. But she is still in love with her husband.

So when Jared comes back he does so with remorse for what he did and anger at himself and anger at his family for lying to him. He apologizes in many different ways. Willow forgives. But she doesn't forget.

Like in the first volume where she pinned a lot of hope on his memories returning, this one you can feel she is sort of waiting for the shoe to drop that his memories may go away again. Or even worse, she fears he might realize even with his memories intact, this past year with his family and Simone he actually prefers that new-old life more than he preferred it with her.

But the Jared we get is the Jared we met in the first chapters of this first volume. He is in love with his wife, he is deliriously happy to have a child and he wants a reset. He is willing to work for it and Willow (and Vivi!) makes him work hard for it.

I liked that we got Willow the accepting Jared back in her life over with fairly early on because the rebuilding of the trust and the incorporation of Jared back in the family made for good meaty storytelling. Like I said, Willow made him work for it. But also, Vivi! Jared wanted his daughter's love and affection. And Vivi wasn't just gonna let this tall stranger into her life easily. The scenes of Jared desperately wanting to be one of Vivi's trusted grown ups circle and the slow baby (ha!) steps she allowed him to take were great to read.

And we also get some answers. Why did Jared and his old girlfriend Simone break up in the first place and why was she so desperate to get back to him with? Their break up took place during Jared's missing years. He didn't know why he and Simone broke up while his memory was gone. And she wasn't telling.

We also find out why his relationship with his parents degraded after his marriage to Willow.

I take off half a star because I really thought that there could have (should have) been a come to Jesus/all cards on the table conversation between Jared, Willow and his parents. They were trying to brush everything under the rug and start fresh, but you can't just slap a band-aid over an infected wound, you have to clean it out. It was a missed opportunity, imo.

Also, since so much of the first book included the company Willow and Jared ran and how the loss of income the corporate client that Jared had brought in (despite Willow's objections) who bailed after Jared bailed caused the implosion of the company, I wish this book had allowed a deeper conversation about that and that aspect of their life that Jared harmed. I was disappointed we didn't get more of a post-mortem on that.

But overall this was a great back half of the story that great to see our couple get back together, rebuild their trust and become a family again.

Their Fresh Start

After checking for volume 2 every day for a year, I was super excited to FINALLY have it in my hands!

The story spans a few years and we get to see how each of them coped with their lives after this trauma.

It was definitely a satisfying end, I laughed, I teared up and I could not put it down!

With each turn of the page, I found myself feeling a myriad of different emotions, from sorrow to joy, and everything in between.

One of the most captivating aspects of this novel is the way in which the author seamlessly transitions the characters' lives after the aftermath of a major break. Through vivid descriptions and thought-provoking dialogue, we are given a glimpse into the aftermath of Willow's divorce and the adjustments she must make in her new life. One particular moment in the novel that stands out in my mind is when Jared finally regains his memories. This pivotal moment not only affects him personally but also has far-reaching consequences for both him and Willow. The intensity and rawness of that moment left me feeling gutted, as if I were experiencing it alongside the characters. The emotions that Carr was able to evoke in that moment were truly breathtaking, leaving me with a heavy heart and a sense of admiration for the characters' strength.

almost a 5 star (contains spoilers)

The abrupt ending made me dock a star.
This story was very poignant and I enjoyed how both Jared and Willow fought their way back to each other. I was surprised that they didn’t pursue family therapy once he regained his memory.
A few things I didn’t like. I know Jared’s parents behavior had been appalling, however given all the issues that they were dealing with I’m not sure that Jared should have told Willow about their bigotry. They didn’t really have a close relationship so what was the point? It would have made sense only if they treated Olivia differently. Willow should have kept that information to herself and not share it with her mother and Leigh. All she achieved is making everyone very uncomfortable and making it impossible to have cordial family gatherings, for his parents to really show change and more importantly for her children to have a real relationship with their grandparents.
I also found it abhorrent that she set Jared up by saving their conversation about this topic. For all we know her mother had views that were questionable and Jared wasn’t planning to weaponized those against her. He chose her and their family so her behavior once they were firmly back together was petty. If his parents were racists they wouldn’t fight for grandparents rights. She even managed to taint Jared’s relationship with Leigh with this revelation. As an aside she was hypocritical because she was still ok with benefiting from their huge monetary gift whilst having bigoted views about his parents herself. Some black people also have generational wealth.

wow!!!

Wills and Jared!! This complete story following the life of Willow and Jared from volume one to now finishing volume two, had my stomach in twist, intense anger for jerk Jared, to hoping these two could figure it all out. This was a heart wrenching then heart healing story. I loved it. Spice was about 1 which is low on the scale I normally read, but that was ok because I loved their story. Beautiful story of Willow and Jared.

They made it…

Love the fact that Jared was so determined, in spite of his injury, to reclaim his life. Their future is together is certainly not guaranteed with the possibility of Jared getting early degenerative disease due to the TBI, but they are determined to enjoy and love each and every moment. I loved the transcendental vibe of these two and Vivi needs her own book!
