Running barefoot as a child through his small Gujarati village of Padana, India, no one could have predicted the adventures that were to await Rajni Kant Shah as he left for Kenya in 1949. After the passing of his father, Rajni bounced around the care of relatives, friends and strangers, starting afresh umpteen times. Along the way, he faced off with rhinos and lions in the wild, briefly faced incarceration and travelled across the country with only a few shillings to his name.
Throughout all these stories, a deep and moving love story comes to life. It is this thread of forbidden love that ultimately weaves his story together. Previna was and is a shining light in Rajni’s life and she serves to show the tenacity and grit of South Asian women in a time where their freedom was so limited.
Filled with handwritten letters and historic photos, Rajni gives us a rich and thrilling account of a young man's life that was truly one of adventure, and one we are sure many future generations will read with tears, laughter and love.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read, especially the part of living in Nairobi and environs in the 1950's and 1960's! And the photographs spiced the story up. The story gives a glimpse of the past in a fast changing location.
