After reading "When Nietzsche Wept" by Irvin D. Yalom, I was struck by the author's ability to blend philosophy and fiction to create a captivating story that explores the complexities of the human psyche.

The novel's central characters, Friedrich Nietzsche and Dr. Josef Breuer, are both struggling with their own personal demons. Nietzsche is plagued by self-doubt and creative block, while Breuer is haunted by the guilt of his failed treatment of a former patient. Through their intense psychoanalytic sessions, the two men begin to confront their past traumas and work towards personal growth.

What I found particularly compelling about the book was its exploration of the relationship between creativity and mental illness. Nietzsche's struggle with writer's block and his subsequent breakdown highlights the delicate balance between the madness that fuels creativity and the danger of mental instability.

Additionally, Yalom's use of historical figures and events adds a layer of depth to the novel. The inclusion of famous intellectuals such as Lou Andreas-Salomé and Sigmund Freud grounds the story in a rich historical context and adds an element of realism to the fictional narrative.

Overall, "When Nietzsche Wept" is a thought-provoking and engaging read that challenges readers to explore their own emotional vulnerabilities and confront their past traumas. Yalom's ability to weave philosophy, psychology, and fiction together into a seamless narrative is a testament to his talent as a writer and a therapist.

a fantastic book. when you take it in your hands, it's as if the book itself is holding you and not vice versa. you can't stop reading it, you just need more and more - it's like a drug.

yalom is excelent at doing what he's doing, of course. his books are the perfect blend of reality and fiction, working together to create the perfect story.

also, one thing i surely love about his books, but in this case about this book, is how close it brings you to nietzsche amd his philosophies without actually reading his work. of course, it can never compare, but it's a perfect book for people who enjoy reading philosophy, in this case nietzsches philosophy, but are too tired to focus on his books etc.

all in all, i wish i could give it more than 5 stars, because this is something i think anyone should, to avoid using the word 'must', have in their house.

Read this book back in March, 2022. I am so fascinated by Dr. Yalom’s proposed circumstances of interaction of Nietzsche with Dr. Breuer (Freud’s “coach” in psychoanalysis). This fictional story leads us to meet real historical characters of the period with distinct details of their real documented lives.

The book is pet peeve of mine because I wouldn’t be read again as looking from a first sight. Probably Yalom’s masterpiece is When Nietzsche Wept. The way of his recounting about feeing down and empty would be change and help us to understand that what’s that feeling exactly. Everyone can find at least a part oneself.
