I loved the concept of a young Duke striving to be a good man. His story was understandable. Mercy on the other hand was shallow and self absorbed. She and Nicholas circle each other during endless misunderstandings that grew exasperating. Each exchange of information demanded endless questions and indirect answers. Every time. I lost respect for Mercy when she didn’t have the integrity to share her story with her Duke and allow him to be involved in deciding the future. Shabby behavior in my view. Who wants a partner that can’t be truthful? Maybe you have to be very young to enjoy this.

This is a great Regency romance story, the fourth and final book in the series but my first. I intended to read at least the first one to get a feel for the series but just ran out of time. I did not have a problem with following along with the story.
Mercy (Lady Mercy) and Nicolas (Duke of Harrington0 meet in a corridor at a ball, eavesdropping outside the game room. Nicolas made mistakes in his youth and a stint in the army changed him into a stoic, proper rule follower but a really good man. Mercy is carefree, young, loves to dance and read. Nicolas decides to court her, and she thinks he is too stuffy and without passion. But her parents want her to marry all of a sudden. It was fun to watch their relationship develop but nerve racking at times with misunderstandings and devious women coming into the picture. I especially liked Nicolas and felt the characters were well developed and realistic. I plan to go back and read the stories of the other couples mentioned in this one.

Oh, I loved this! I am full of happiness and it shows by the smile I’m still wearing as I write this. I didn’t want to put it down because I thought it was so enjoyable. It was a slow burn romance and even the side characters captivated me. I really loved Nicholas and Mercy courtship and they were both unique in their own ways. The story started much like a lot of regency romances but the writing and direction felt different. Different in a good way and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s well written with the times and I enjoyed it immensely! I highly recommend reading it.

Esther Hatch creates a swoon worthy, slow burn, chess match with two opponents who share one thing in common, a desire for true love. Take a proper, well controlled Duke & a young miss who wants the same passionate love her parents experienced & watch the sparks fly.
Miss Mercy Rothschild only wants to marry if she can marry for love. Her parents have always given her time & freedom, but this Season they’re encouraging her to marry & marry well. When she first meets the Duke of Harrington, she doesn’t realize his identity. While he’s intrigued by her, she finds him a bit stiff and boring. He’s the ideal choice of her parents, but Mercy has other ideas. She concocts a plan to try to foist him on someone else. But as she gets to know the real Nicholas, she might have to change her plans before it’s too late.

This book was one fabulous rollercoaster of a ride with moments that made me want to throw the book & others that made me want to hug it. It’s definitely a slow burn and just like chess, it takes patience to get to the payoff. Once you get there though, the wait is well worth it! I loved these two opposites! I especially enjoyed the growth Mercy undergoes. Both she and Nicholas take lessons from the other and come to meet in the middle. Mercy learns that uncontrolled passion has bitter consequences & Nicholas finds that there’s definitely a time to express his deep feelings. The library scene was my favorite! There’s also a villainess in the story & I loved seeing her get her comeuppance.
For those familiar with the series, you’ll love seeing familiar characters like Lord Bryant again. *sigh* If this is your first book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Highly recommend to Regency romance fans! It’s a sweet Regency with kissing only. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. Awwwwww! I’m a sucker for a good romance and this one was awesome!!!! I loved all the twists and turns this took until they finally found their happily ever after.
Mercy meets The Duke of Harrington but doesn’t realize that’s who she’s talking to. He’s immediately drawn to her, but because of past experiences he’s not showing any passion or emotion. He sets about courting her, but she’s bored. She wants a love match like her parents have. He’s so stiff and hands off, treating their courtship like a business transaction, though he’s simmering with feelings behind his proper facade.
She won’t settle for anything less than passionate love.
Since she doesn’t see that happening with him, though she’s attracted to him she tries to find ways to get him to break of their courtship with disastrous results.
This is a clean romance with some great romantic scenes. I think Esther Hatch has really outdone herself here. I thoroughly enjoyed this story even with the miscommunication (my least favorite trope). It was handled so well I couldn’t get too frustrated with it.

Nicholas, oh sweet, Nicholas. This man had a carefree dalliance in his youth that resulted in extreme consequences and now toes the rules of society meticulously. Although he’s very stoic, I loved the snippets of charm and boyish charisma that threatened to escape as he searches for a wife, and does he ever meet his match with Lady Mercy!
“The amount of effort she had to put into keeping her face bland probably meant she had the frozen look of a taxidermized deer.”
Mercy craves stolen kisses and interludes that ooze romance, and while she agrees to be courted by Nicholas, she’s not convinced she can find love with this rigid man. She’s adorable with her dreamy personality and devious plotting, and it was truly refreshing to discover how she reacts to various situations, especially those with potential scandal.
The way these two clash together with their hopes and dreams for the future left me eager to devour every page, and I will never look at a cravat in the same way again. Dances, hand kisses, flowers…this author does a very fine job of breathing life into these vivid characters and drawing them together like a moth to a flame.

DNF at 80%
I’m genuinely sorry to anyone who loved this. The short answer is, I abhor this book. The long answer is below. I didn't DNF sooner because people were raving about "the kiss scene" and I’ve loved how this author has done them in previous books, so I pushed through until I couldn't.
*************POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW**************
I’ve read a lot of kissing scenes and that was the most gag worthy. It's the enemy of sexy. “Putting that cravat over my mouth was the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me. Thank you.” What the hell?!
The writing was simple, and bland. Not witty and smart like I expected. The dialogue was 95% cringe, odd, painfully repetitious and boring. In 10 short sentences we read the words “court” and or “courting” 6 times. This happened with different words frequently.
It’s a romance, but nothing happens until around 70% into the book. What were we doing the whole time? Oh, dancing and playing chess.
The FMC Mercy, didn't act like a woman in this time. She was historically inaccurate for most of the book.
Why do we spend so many pages with previous book couples who only brag about their love stories?
The MC is weirdly obsessed with her freckles and can't stop yacking about them. “I find those flecks on your skin fascinating. They keep me up at night.”
The pace dragged. It took 7 paragraphs to describe and talk about the flowers she received. I lost count on how many times Mercy was determined to marry someone who could make her happy and then she refused to connect with the one man who could.
Mercy was aggravating and a manipulative wench. She doesn’t like the Duke because he: acts like a man of his station and a gentleman, he dances perfectly, and he has stiff handwriting. None of those things are red flags. Then she proceeds to push him away by forcing him to have social interactions with a woman who seduced him when he was 17yrs old. Her reasoning is ridiculous.
I had a friend spoil the last 20% and it didn't improve. I’ve loved previous books by Esther, and I can recommend her earlier books, but I will not be reading anything new by her.

Esther Hatch is an author that I always tune in to read. I really enjoy her dialogue and the men she writes. The men are absolutely wordsmiths at making women swoon (myself included).
So while our leading male is absolutely a wordsmith, his story.... well, it was a little too complex for me to fully get invested and enjoy it.
Girl is being pressured by her parents to get into a relationship and get married as soon as possible. Our female lead doesn't really want to, but she will give it a go. Our male lead is a new Duke (as of four years) and is ready to mingle and get wed. He has a standing in Parliament and really wants to find someone who will push his support of the Irish through and to better things. When the two of them meet at a party, he has no idea who he is (and that he is the Duke everyone is at the moment gossiping about), but she gets him to try to listen through the wall at her father talking about her marriage prospects at a party. Through conversation, he discovers that she doesn't really care about Dukes and wants to marry for love - which is what he wants to marry for too, but his looming thoughts / the presence of his dead father and old demons from when he fell head over heels in love with a woman (who was engaged, and he chased her about / spent time with her when he was 17) causes him to reign in any sort of romantic fancies.
The book is basically about one person wanting romance in their life while another person is trying to stifle it. Then, you have side stories of women who he was connected with trying to mislay or mislead the male and the female in their courting.
The story felt like it was good, but seemed to drag out when the female is trying to set him up with other females that was involved with (though not knowing the drama and complications it caused back when). Still, I pressed on.
I think while it was good it was clearly not her strongest book. I've read better. I do recommend it if you're a fan of her work.

A book you are sure to love
Everyone wears a façade at one time or another, presenting ourselves as what we think is best for the situation or moment. But what if that mask doesn’t help you to achieve your goals? Nicholas, Duke of Harrington, had decided he needed a wife to help him succeed in society and parliament, so he set about it in the most proper way. He made a list of appropriate young ladies but when he sees Mercy, the list is forgotten. As he proceeds with his very proper courtship, Mercy is disappointed in his stiff, unemotional behavior with no passion. Mercy has always dreamed of a love match which does not appear possible with Nicholas. As she sets out to find a someone else for Nicholas, things don’t run smooth. A spurned young lady, a widow in search of a higher title, and issues in both families threaten to upset everyone’s plans as well as break hearts. You will love this book. Dear Mercy,
You are going to play the best game of chess of your life. And this one is definitely going to be very important and meaningful. But I promise, if you play it right, whether you win the game or lose, you will come out the biggest winner. What's the prize you might ask? None other than the heart of a gentleman who will love and cherish you for all his days. He's smitten. Be kind to him and try to look past that stoic behavior and see to his heart, who he truly is. I promise all of your dreams and hopes for your future will be fulfilled.
You're going to mess up. Kind of big time. But just be honest and things will work themselves out. Maybe stop your scheming for a little bit. Then again, all of your scheming is quite entertaining and will bring many laughs. Just don't forget that you will have to fix it all when it turns south. But it will be oh so worth it!
And when you meet a man in the corridor while you are being nefarious, don't be afraid to get lost in his eyes, especially when he seems to be staring at your face. Your freckles will be very captivating. Be yourself. Don't be afraid to be yourself and all will work out better than you could have ever imagined. And remember, you need grace, so make sure you offer it as well.

This book is wonderful! I didn't want it to end. I loved seeing characters from the previous books in this series. My heart was so happy. I laughed and swooned and sighed and maybe almost cried (I had to keep the rhyming going there)! My teenager discovered Esther Hatch's books recently and devoured them. I was beyond thrilled. And then my teen read this one and was sooooo excited to talk to me about it and tell me allllll the things! Hahaha! Thank you Ester Hatch for writing incredible books that I can share and have giggles and fun conversations with my kiddos (and friends and family and everyone) about!!!

Nicholas decided to marry and decides to do it right. Courting and marriage have correct steps to follow, right?
Mercy wants to marry for love and isn’t interested in just going through the motions, however her family won’t let her turn down a Duke. As she thinks of ways to get him to back down from courting her, she learns more about him. Maybe there’s more to him than a formal Duke following protocol? It might be too late though to decide she might want to try to make things work with him.
I loved Mercy’s independent confident nature. I loved getting to see the man behind the Duke facade. If you love a good slow burn romance mixed with humor and moments that make you smile, this is one for you. This romance between two opposites had so much to love. A great addition to this series.

I was so excited to see another book in this series! A Proper Facade was the perfect slow burn romance with moments of sizzling chemistry and the most perfect hero! This love journey was just that, a journey, but the romance is worth the wait for this couple! Mercy is all about passion and romance and Nicholas is all about control and order. Mixing these two brought about many noteworthy scenes as Mercy tried to ruffle Nicholas’s feathers and loosen his composure a bit. This story was full of layers as the characters got to know one another and their friendship and romance began to blossom! There might be a sizzling kiss that was worth the wait!

This is a story about first impressions being misinterpreted.

Sadly, I found this book infuriating. The scheming female main character was so entitled, and so childish that it was hard to root for her. She was totally undeserving. I felt very bad for the male main character. There was also a lot of circular writing and repetition, I had difficulty enjoying it.

I’ve honestly been struggling with writing this review. Esther Hatch is an auto-buy and basically an auto-love author for me. Every single one of her stories has heart, humor, and the swooniest romance. Knowing we finally were going to get Nicholas’s story was huge for me, I’ve been waiting for it since the moment I met him. And while this book was good, I can’t say it was my favorite of this series. I guess the best way to describe this book, which is purely subjective, and MY opinion (which will vary from everyone else’s), would be to compare it to a roller coaster.
This book was full of ups and downs. Moments of indifference and moments of overwhelming feeling and emotion (both from me and the characters). Chapters and pages where I couldn’t read fast enough and chapters and pages I struggled to get through. Interactions that had me sighing happily and interactions that had me so frustrated I had to put the book down. Sometimes I felt like there was too much going on, and other times I wish there was more interactions between the MCs. Basically I felt either completely in love with the story or I felt slightly disconnected.
Nicholas and Mercy both had valid reasons for the person they have become and how they act and move forward in life. Their pasts and family members helped shape them into the people they are in this story. Sometimes these personality traits helped move things along, and other times it held things up.
I will say the “high” moments between these two had me squealing like a little school girl. The moment when Nicholas finally drops his walls was full of delicious tension and combustible chemistry. These two had an undeniable pull towards each other, so to see them give in to that was so enjoyable. I also really appreciate how Nicholas and Mercy were able to adjust their opinions and were capable of trying to see the world how the other does.
And while I wouldn’t say this is a negative review, it’s not an “I’m so in love with this book you HAVE to read it” review. And this kinda breaks my heart. I have chosen to only focus on positivity when writing reviews, so when I’m not completely enamored with a book it becomes so hard for me to know what to write and share.
Overall I did like this story. Esther Hatch is pretty much the queen of writing that swoony tension that builds to the sweetest moments between the hero and heroine. This series is incredible and I do highly recommend any lover of historical romance to check it out.

It was fun to see the strategies of Nicholas and Mercy as they approach the game of making a match. Nicholas thinks he just wants someone to fill the social role of a duchess, but his inadvertent meeting of an eavesdropping Mercy in a hallway awakened his senses and desire for more. Mercy has always wanted a passionate marriage like her sister's, but unexplained pressure from her parents present the conflict of compromising her dreams to please her family and society. The author's use of the game of chess reflects the back and forth between Nicholas and Mercy- presenting their polite side for society but hiding more romantic wishes. I found the struggle of Nicholas to be more genuine as he learned to embrace rather than suppress his emotions. Mercy was definitely more calculated as she and her friend enact plans to trick and mislead Nicholas. With time and experience she realizes that passion can have its downfalls when unsupported by a strong foundation, and is almost too late when she finally sees behind the facade of Nicholas. A sweet romance with complicated dynamics that take our main characters on an emotional journey.

If you are familiar with Pride and Prejudice, you know that Darcy believes he is showing his attraction to Elizabeth and she misinterprets everything thinking he is showing disdain. This is pretty much what is happening in A Proper Facade. These two characters seem terribly mismatched but mostly it is because, though he is honest in communicating situations with Mercy, he does not communicate his feelings at all. He is stuffy, overly proper and unwilling to show emotion. (Darcy, anyone?) Mercy on the other hand is all about emotion, and passion and is pretty young. I don't remember how old she is but she seemed on the immature side and she is not good at reading people. Then throw in more misunderstandings leading to unfortunate situations. Though Mercy seemed young she was also charming and fun in her enjoyment of life. Though their courtship left something to be desired, once Nicholas opened up the floodgates on his feelings he was pretty swoony and it became apparent that the couple would actually be well matched. Their swoony moments are seriously swoony and they are also playful which is always fun in a couple. I thoroughly enjoyed the epilogue which proved that point. Shockingly.
This whole series has been fun. I always enjoy Esther Hatch books.

If there was a "Most Swoonworthy Kiss" award, this book wins!!!
And Just like that this book is my NUMBER 1 read this year! Considering this is book number 201 that I have read this year... that is saying something! But it's not just the kiss, the whole story was the best storyline! Esther writes romance the exact way I like to read it. It is such a hard book to put down!
Nicholas needs to marry so he can be taken seriously as the Duke. Mercy needs to marry because her parents are putting pressure on her. He plans for a marriage of convenience. She is only interested in marrying for love. She wants someone that is going to "show" they want to be with her. He is against "showing" his feelings because he thinks it'll reflect poorly on him. They couldn't be more different! When Nicholas sets his sights on Mercy, she wants out, but to keep her dignity at the same time. So she plots a plan to make him fall for someone else... But is that really the best idea? And what if it works too well, and she changes her mind. What if his plan of only a marriage of convenience becomes near impossible the closer he gets to Mercy?! Why are Mercys parents pushing her to marry?
This story, oh my goodness. I didn't want to do any adulting and just read and be a witness to Nicholas and Mercy's story.
This story is a must. If you are a clean romance reader, this is for you. If you want swoonworthy kisses and all the feels ... definitely grab this! Gosh I want to read it all over again!

A very proper duke is looking for the perfect wife. She must be of rank and have good connections to help his career in Parliament. The lady he's attracted to meets his requirements, but she is not interested in his pursuit. Love is what she's looking for. To discourage his interest, she needs to find him another lady. The best laid plans don't always work out, especially with a scandal. Very emotional with some humor and angst.

I have read the first three books in this series several times, and I loved this one, too! I’m so happy Nicholas, the Duke of Harrington, got his story written, even though I’ll admit that I couldn’t remember who he was, so I reread the rest of the series before starting this one. 😊 He is so set on being proper and not giving society any gossip fodder, while Lady Mercy wants someone who isn’t afraid to show his love by sneaking kisses in ballrooms. Mercy is sure the stoic duke is not for her, but she doesn’t want to disappoint her parents who are understandably thrilled a duke is singling her out, so she comes up with a plan to get Nicholas to fall for someone else. I thought this story was unique and fun, and it has a few little surprises as well. Esther is definitely a favorite author of mine, and I can’t wait to read more from her!

I have been waiting for this story since I finished A Proper Charade and I’m so very glad Esther wrote it. Nicholas needed his own love story and it’s as amazing as I hoped it would be. Mercy is the perfect person to be his match and I loved watching them dance (literally) around their attraction to each other. I want so much to shout about all my favorite moments, which honestly are something from nearly every page but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. So I’ll just mention a few teasers besides my list of favorite things. First, Nicholas’s determination to be proper and when he finally lets his control slip. He’s such a complex character that I really enjoyed getting to know him better. The result of his “slip” is one of the most swoony kisses I’ve read 😉 Second, Mercy’s quest to find love and how it’s culmination turns out beautifully. You could almost yell in frustration over her misconceptions of people and situations but they really just made the story better and more realistic. Third, Miss Morgan…what a little jerk!! She reminds me so much of Austen’s Lucy Steele and I absolutely despise her. So pleased with how things ended up for her 😂 Fourth (and rather importantly) Lord Brant is back!! And I still love him! If I have failed to convince you to read this story with these teasers and favorite things, well, I’m sorry for you. But for everyone else, get thee hence to your favorite bookseller and get a copy in your hands ASAP!!

Hatch has done it again with a delightful story of romance and opposites attract! You have Nicholas who is completely proper and Mercy who just wants love and passionate moments! You couldn’t have two people farther apart on what they wanted in a relationship. Mercy was a force of nature! Once she set her mind to something it was happening! She made me laugh and smile. Nicholas was so stiff and formal, I wasn’t sure if he was capable of lightening up. Yet beneath his proper exterior was more than meets the eye!
I absolutely adored the cameos of characters from the previous books. Especially Lord Bryant! Watching the layers unfold in this story had me in for the long haul and I stayed up late to finish it. The romance was on point and I loved the entire book! Slow burn romance and that kissing scene, you guys, the kissing scene!!! It was amazing!!! You need to run and grab this book! Man oh man, I did not want to put this book down. I felt a lot of emotions (including the desire to strangle our FMC 😂😆) and I just had to keep reading to find out what would happen next.
The Duke of Harrington was just lovely. He was a gentleman and he was caring, and his desire to treat Mercy as a lady was so sweet. He was extremely proper, to a fault sometimes, but the adventurous Mercy is the perfect match and balance. She is young and a bit naive, but she is also full of life and wants to love someone so badly. I won’t say too much because this a spoiler free zone 😉 but you will absolutely want to read this book. It has so many beloved characters from the past books, and even just getting a couple glimpses of my book love, Lord Bryant, made my night 😁😂

This is book 4 in Esther Hatch’s Proper Scandals series. This book follows Nicholas Kendrick, Duke of Harrington who is Patience’s brother from book two.
Mercy wants to find true love, and Nicholas is in search of a wife! He is serious and proper and she is bold and passionate. I loved their meet cute, and the ending was sweet!
This was an intriguing read.

No question about it: you’ve got to add this series to your TBR! A Proper Facade returns readers to the company of beloved characters (looking at you with heart eyes, Lord Bryant) but also introduces new ones who will keep you hooked. Although this one wasn’t my favorite in the Proper Scandals series, I still enjoyed Esther Hatch’s voice in her writing—never any complaints there. I’m excited for more stories from her! 3.5/5 stars

Deciding that it might be time to look for a wife, Nicholas (25yo) sets out to find a political partner, not a distraction that will tempt him to return to the man he was before joining the army. On the other hand, Mercy (20yo) is determined to only marry for love—even if that means foisting this dispassionate duke on someone else.
Nicholas and Mercy’s story is built upon the avoidable drama of miscommunication. The antics were slightly more cringey than entertaining because of what readers knew about how much the actions were going to hurt the other—unwitting—party involved. There were also a lot of references to the couples in the previous books, though this story is technically a standalone. But the ending is perfectly cheesy and swoony, so all's well that ends well.
The majority of characters are either British or Irish. The mature content rating is for mild innuendo and kissing. The violence rating is for mentions of war conflict and murder.

Deciding that it might be time to look for a wife, Nicholas (25yo) sets out to find a political partner, not a distraction that will tempt him to return to the man he was before joining the army. On the other hand, Mercy (20yo) is determined to only marry for love—even if that means foisting this dispassionate duke on someone else.
Nicholas and Mercy’s story is built upon the avoidable drama of miscommunication. The antics were slightly more cringey than entertaining because of what readers knew about how much the actions were going to hurt the other—unwitting—party involved. There were also a lot of references to the couples in the previous books, though this story is technically a standalone. But the ending is perfectly cheesy and swoony, so all's well that ends well.
The majority of characters are either British or Irish. The mature content rating is for mild innuendo and kissing. The violence rating is for mentions of war conflict and murder.
