Chase is finally coming to understand just what being Prince Chase means, and what becoming emperor to the Solarian Empire will mean as well. He's getting better at the job every day, now if only he could just bring himself to tell Captain Witner and the other members of the command staff that he really is a prince, and not the fraud they all believe he is.
Another thing he is starting to learn more about is Imperial politics and the kinds of things princes and emperors are known for, as well as expected to do. He's also discovering that there are a lot of people who still believe he's a fraud, because of Neill's efforts at proclaiming him as such. Of course his criminal background isn't helping him much there.
What is helping him however are some of the people he's discovering, and some of the things he's learning about his family from them. There are still a good many surprises in store for Chase. Hopefully none of those surprises will end up killing him.
I've had a very varied life. I grew up in New York, on Long Island. I went to school to become an Engineer, then joined the Air Force. After that I worked first in Robotics, then in Aerospace as a Flight Test Engineer. I moved into the medical fields, then into more Technical markets working for a number of high tech companies where I became a Contractor. I used to own and raise big cats. I love motorcycles and old cars. I'm a pilot and former martial arts instructor. I'm a fan of the Reno Air Races. Then there's the stuff I'm not supposed to talk about, but that's another story. I've seen a lot of interesting stuff go by, met a lot of interesting, wonderful, strange, or sometimes just psychotic people. I've had the opportunity to work on some truly game changing technologies. And while I've had some very bad things happen to me in my life, I've never let it stop me. Keep smiling. -John
I’m not sure what happened to this series, but it has gotten more and more base with each book. It’s as if the writer is pandering to sickos with some sort of sadomasochist fantasy.
The women are mostly used as toys in one fashion or another. There is constant talk of women being used and passed around by the men in power and the idea that many of them like it.
Even the “powerful” women throw themselves at the hero and seem thrilled to even have a one-night stand with Prince Chase. Even his love story is tainted by his “strategic affairs” that his soul mate seems absolutely unconcerned with… it is definitely no universe that I find believable.
Speaking of which, the AI is absolutely inept and rarely offers anything of value to the story.
Niell’s son is a willing sadist at the age of 13, even the video game Far Cry 6 did a much better job of creating a child of a brutal dictator than this book series.
I can’t stress how sexist and vile the treatment of the women in this book is - it is insulting, as though all sci-fi readers are geeky men who only imagine women as play toys to fulfill their sick desires. I cannot recommend Force Majeure to anyone except psychopaths.
4 stars. I'm enjoying this series... ...Despite that plot hole at the end of the book you could fly a space freighter through. oh wait they DID. I'm digging this one. Yeah there are several things I could point to, things that could and maybe should bother me... but they just don't for some reason. This is just a fun space adventure.
I find it difficult to suspend disbelief that the "prince" would find it so important to hide the fact he IS actually an imperial relation and not just an imposter. So important that instead of fessing up and taking his rightful place as emperor, he ships off his girlfriend (the one person who could verify the claim) to some bs "save the real imperial family" mission then gets himself kidnapped and sent back to the homeworld for execution. Then of course comes the cliffhanger-esque ending where SOMEBODY finally notices the clues and realizes he needs to be saved, that they had a REAL PRINCE the entire time. It's made me dislike the entire book, and I'm honestly unsure if I'll finish the series. Did I also mention our main character starts sleeping around as soon as he sends his gf across the galaxy? It's just bad, I didn't enjoy this book and gave it 3 stars simply out of loyalty for the first two books. Otherwise I'd rate it a 2.
This seems like a lot of filler. Most of it is rather boring and just provides set up. The interactions are forced and the harem building is very, very weak. The bit at the end just comes out of nowhere and feels tacked on. This whole thing is lacking in quality.
DNFed at 40%. I'm done with this series and it's constant misogynistic undercurrents about treating women as sexual objects to be conquered, exploited, or traded.
Solid installment on a great sci-fi series. While I was initially drawn to the series as a friend saying its one of the rare "mecha done right" books, the mech portion is mostly background to the story, and could easily be replaced with "spacefighter" or "powered armor", or any number of other space swooping personal fighting vehicles. Not robotech, but then again, not robotech. Thing is, despite it not really scratching the initial itch I went looking for, what I found caused me to stay through all 3 (and looking forward to 4) books, because the story is compelling, the character is intriguing, and the action is well paced and has been great. I'm thoroughly enjoying the series.
As to this particular book, I'm mostly very positive, but a touch mixed as it hits a couple of pet peeves of mine... and by pet peeves I mean potentially prematurely ending books for me peeves.
Yes, its a cliffhanger ending, and I absolutely hate those, I've been known to drop a series because of it, even from authors I otherwise love and read everything else they've ever written... But, at least to me, this book is an example of a cliffhanger done well. The only "surprise" at the ending, isn't really, and while the book ends after setting up the next plot arc, it is the next plot arc, not an abruptly book end in the middle of the high-tension ending of the current plot arc. And that's a delicate and precarious line to walk for an author, as not everyone has the same view, reads the book the same way, or has pacing and tension hit the same beat for them. So, be warned, cliffhanger ending in this book. But for me? I can't wait for book 4.
The other issue is that the tone of things, especially the main character(s) attitudes towards relationships, changes in this book. It's well telegraphed, and then directly discussed by the characters, so it shouldn't be a surprise within the book itself, but its definitely a big change when compared to the first two books. Because it was done well, and the character "growth" makes sense within context, and is foreshadowed and telegraphed well enough, I've no issue with it here. But that kind of major shift has thrown me off other series before.
I definitely recommend the series, and this installment.
Apologies...Just frustrated what Coulda n Shoulda might have been
First, unlike how most look at rating system, when I rate a book as a 3...it's a decent read, not exceptional nor great but falls somewhere into a good read. And I'll never read it again -- temporary amnesia does occur occasionally.
Books 1 n 2 were at best a 3. Readable enough to pass the time. The plot was fine but the writing is aimed at young YA.
My first issue is that MC is older than your average recruit and is a professional gangster and takes to the military like a fish to water. Normally, a 17-18 year old marine recruit, who's a 'street thug, rat', gets an identity, respect and given a meaningful Purpose n Task. From a dead end life to respect and purpose is huge.
This MC, an older gangster who's killed people, starts liking military service, after awhile, but for a long time is trying to figure out how to scam and/or beat the 'system'. And it's written and presented for a 13 year old.
Subplots don't work(like the prince n heir nonsense), most characters are stereotypes and the ship board romancing is unrealistic and detracting. There's a lot of Inconsistencies through out culminating with some really bad plot in book 3. As soon as his girlfriend leaves, he has another that moves in with him. Nobody has a problem with this after 2 and a half books where we are led to believe the MC is honorable and morally sound. A minor Oops?
I'll pass on the cliffhanger, or exercise my KU and skim to see how this mess ends.
This is a great 3rd installment of the series. There is less combat it in than in previous books bit it does a lot of character progression and expansion of character and we meet some family which adds an interesting dynamic to it, and the Book ends on a level of suspene but not a cliff hanger. It wraps up the book nicely. We have a basic plan for book 4, and there is no question: Did anyone die in the cliffhanger ending we didn't have. Nope everyone is alive and well. And I look forward to the next book in the series. And don't complain the next book will be out in 3/4 months, cuz how many other authors and there publishers pre-release there completed books 6 or 8 months after completion or like so many series I can name that have been working on book "4" for years!! So 3 months I'm cool.ill wait and likely read the next ghost warrior book he writes and releases in the next month or so then boom book 5 is here.
I mostly like this series and was looking forward to reading this entry, but I think the story is being drawn out. I think this book could have been told in 2/3 the length of this book and still had all the important stuff in it. I also think there are getting to be way too many characters that we have to follow and the switching between points of view is sometimes jarring. I understand the story has parts that are taking place in multiple locations, but after a while, I lose track of who is who and found myself just skimming through some of the sections. And ending right in the middle of a suspenseful situation just sucked, especially knowing the next book won’t come out for a while.
It's times like these that I'm sad I'm a speed reader I read all three books so far way too fast, it's currently 450am and I just finished book 3, the story flows and chase constantly surprises you with what he says some things I'm like come on how have they not realized he's the prince yet haha Mr John van stry I'm sorry to hear about your dog that's rough. I hope you continue writing because I can see it's your passion just like it is mine who knows maybe I'll end up in your list one day I can't wait for the next book your an amazing author I'm starting on ghost warrior next I'm sure they will be just as amazing!!!
Our intrepid hero, Chase Morgan, has finally been captured by the evil Democratic People's Republic of Sol and the planning for his torture and execution is beginning. But...the Wolfhounds aren't ready to give him up so easily... and we all have a few guesses as to what Duchess Claire is going to have to say about it.... I've been loathe to do a review on the first two books and was waiting to review the entire series, but this book was just too good to wait. Now I'll be champing at the bit for book four to come out!
It has much the same style as the previous entries which may or may not be to your liking. I personally find the frequent use of italics annoying, but the book is still nice.
Lots of plot developments, lots of complications, and a decent cliffhanger. It certainly feels like the series is coming to a head soon so this hopefully won't drag on into irrelevance.
Characters are still a bit thin. Some conversations go around in circles about relatively simple topics.
Was a fantastic series until suddenly the name prince was advised by the woman who was the live of his life that of course it was ok for him to sleep with other woman. What total bullshit. Where does this tripe come from? I'm a full blooded man and I stopped reading at that point because it was so disconnected from reality. In what world does a partner in a healthy relationship either condone or partake in an affair. Why would the author think this was a positive direction to take the character development. Shit.
Still riveting, still fascinating, still can't get enough of Chase's growing into his role as imperial imposter (?), still really loving this series. The author has done an excellent job creating an universe that (with certain reservations) could have happened, with a society which is all too recognizable, and a situation that plays into every military soap opera that could exist. Okay, I think this is becoming an addiction which could be shared by any fans of Jason Anspach, David Weber, Daniel Gibbs or Glynn Stewart.
This book continues a story that I've fallen hard for and I was so excited when it came out. Now, I finished it in less than 2 days and I need, no I DEMAND that Mr. Van Stry get the next one out immediately! I'd be pulling a "Misery" scenario here if I was in a position to do so. But I promise not to break his legs! I NEED the next installment asap please good sir!
Really Mr Van Stry??? You even cut the cliffhanger short! Maybe ten more pages was all it would have taken to get us to Artemis' telling Whitmer the truth and confirming Kat's story so that Whitmer could basically crap himself.
Still a fun read even if it wandered all over the place a bit with laying down the groundwork for the next two books. Hopefully we spend more time on what's going on with the Tomb and less time on "Emperor's 11; Neill Kneels".
I found this series a short while ago and judged a book by it's cover. I'm so glad I did. The way the characters feel so relatable, and we'll thought out gives them life.
It's not often you can find an author who can write the mecha-space battles and the politics of every situation to where you are also saying, "huh, would have never thought of that."
I eagerly await the next installment of what has become one of my most favorite book series.
The problem with starting a series after several books have been published is that the reader is spoiled by the instant gratification. Sadly, I must now wait for book 4. The worldbuilding is dark with evil people, a high body count, and graphic violence. Chase is a fascinating character, and the supporting cast is interesting and likeable. The book is well-written and held my interest, although I'm not a fan of military sci fi. Artemis is still awesome.
This has been an interesting adventure! I had no idea what was ahead when I picked up book 1. But it has been a fun, exciting adventure.
Only the fact that Chase was, in fact, a Morgan while the Captain was trying to pretend he was the real deal, is a touch weird. But hey, it's not my book, so no more whining.
Anyway, it's a fun book to read and I'm really looking forward to the next one!
An awesome story by John Van Stry. Intrigue, space opera and political machinations.
The MC is getting really good at the requirements of being a deposed prince reclaiming his throne. Then it all goes horribly wrong. Yet in his dauntless way, he's looking for a way out of the fix he's in. Good thing he's got allies both in the capital and abroad. They dont realize the trouble they are in since he's about to open a can of whoop-ass on them.
To be the prince, and play the role of a fake pretending to be the prince. Ah, what a web of deceit. I liked the characters, the settings and the action. None got too deep and nothing was shallow. I stayed up late while reading as the book was just so good I didn't realize how late it was. I am already waiting for the next book with anticipation. I highly recommend this series.
So until, now this was a pretty good plot with some typical small brained men are gods BS, that I can ignore. But the starting of the semi-genetic harem crap. ‘Oh I must love him because he has the imperial interface.” And “ sure you can sleep with other women, you are the emperor.” Is just a terrible and pointless addition. The plot is still good, but the harem garbage is trite.
Okay, it's not, really, but it ends right when you really want to see what happens next. Not quite a cliffhanger, but definitely the pause between major scenes. The stage has been set, you can imagine the next few steps, and you really want to see if you're right.
It really isn't fair how this book ends. The next book can't come out soon enough. I am not a huge sci-fi fan but do enjoy them especially when they are character driven. Chase and his growing inner circle feels real and the series is a great mixture of military, intrigue and other action.
Thrilling enthralling edge of your seat reading can’t put it down. Come on write faster i know your write fast. Sorry I did not finish your end of book blurb. sorry for the loss of your fur-baby. I prefer small dogs with very soft coats so that I can pet on them they are my calming space I pet them until they go to sleep and then I can sleep.
If you've been reading this far, I'm sure it's hooked you as much as it has me. Don't believe the negative Nancy's that have given low reviews. This was an excellent story and though light in some character growth (except Chase), it made up in action and intrigue.
Things will surely get easi…nope. No, they’ll get more exciting.
The narrative moved along, but it was mostly setting up the next act. Not bad, simply moving the pieces through the mid-game. Necessary even, because the two opposing forces are maneuvering at distance and with information delays measured in weeks.
Wow, this book has taken a very unexpected turn. I love this series and cannot wait for the next one. I think it's great how Chase's character has evolved, and it will be fun to read everyone's reaction when they learn the truth about Chase. Keep up the good work.
Third book in series. It’s very good, though it could have been longer. Author had his furry bff go to the forever rainbow, so allowances have been made. Bottom line, shits good yo, buy it read it love it!
6 stars, website shenanigans won’t allow me put more than five. So I shake my old man fist at them and tell them to get off my lawn. 6 stars damn it.
The story continues as the Wolfhounds try to take back the planets and systems that the DPRS took over, while looking for Morgans. Not wanting to give away any plot makes it difficult to explain any of the details that make this book good, I will just say it was an enjoyable read and hard to put down until you reach the end.
