What better place to be than in the comforting arms—and bed—of another Eva Winners book boyfriend? I, personally, can’t think of said other better place because it’s right here with the third and next instalment in her Thorns of Omertà novel, Thorns of Death . If you’ve not been a fan of calling a book boyfriend ‘Daddy’ before, this is THE read that will convince you to do so. I can speak from literary experience with this. My imagination is already running wild as to how this would go down via audiobook….oh my!
For those of you who’ve follower Eva with her Belles & Mobsters series + books one and two of this series, you might be already familiar with the powerful, untouchable and corrupt Enrico Marchetti. He’s made the occasional appearance here and there in past novels, but this is now officially his time and his proving ground to show exactly why he is the powerful Italian stallion all have heard and know him to be.
With him as his prize his eyes are set firmly on, is Isla Evans. Though the two as it seems on the surface run in similar circles—unbeknown to each other—their budding romance starts off in the city of love itself. Paris. What better way to bring two strangers together than this serene, celestial, awe-inspiring city that’s perfect for an ambush, stalking and all best laid plans to go awry? Let’s just hope Isla’s ‘Roman God’ of a man can handle himself—and his woman—on playing grounds outside of his own turf. Only time will tell.
Soon, the two of them venture down the same road of fate, it seems. After running into the enticing Enrico again after their first meeting encounter, there was no getting away from him and Isla finds herself firmly under his spell and possession both. Not a bad spot to be when everyone is out to get you both for one reason or another. I certainly wouldn’t mind hunkering down with Enrico, mobster or not. After all, this man doesn’t ask, he takes. What woman, fictional or not, could resist his charms?
Like any rose, it has its thorns. And the thorns that grew and had woven themselves around Isla and Enrico became deadlier and deadlier. One wrong move, and they would be dicing with death (more so than they did on a daily basis, anyway). Secrets which remained buried or attempted to be buried soon come to the fore and this only puts their chances—as well as chances in the personal, romantic sense—at an all time low chance of survival. What affects one, affects all. Enrico’s secrets spill over from all corners of his life to all whom he holds dear, which is a very select group of people. His small sanctum of serenity and solace is soon in danger and when he has a person just as fiery and determined to protect him, his secrets and the ones he loves? There’s every chance the price is she for those secrets being kept.
Neither Enrico or Isla asked for this life, each other or what they face on a daily basis but now that she is here with him, in his kingdom and at his side, there’s only one thing that she and Enrico can do. Fight. Fight and hope that one or both, will make it to see another sunrise.
The four days I spent with Enrico, Isla and the gang were four of some of the best days of the year. I have my favourite Eva Winners novels in my time reading her work, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Thorns of Dearth is a top tier novel from a top tier lady. I’m proud to give it a top read of 2023 trophy, and to be blown away once more by an author who can’t stop knocking knockout reads out of the park.
Five stars!
