Cao Xun is the Duke Ding who has recently returned to capital after continuous victories in the border. He is thirty, unmarried with martial valor and gentle disposition (at least outwardly). He is an expert in politics but he didn’t know the allure of beauty that'd be waiting for him at home.
On the other hand, Li Yunzhu is the pampered youngest daughter of Duke Ning Li family. She is the most beautiful in the capital- vain and prideful and basically the IT girl. All the eligible bachelor want her and the eligible ladies want to be her. So when her promised husband-to-be, Cao Shao (half-brother of Cao Xun), breaks off his engagement under the pressure of his mother, Yunzhu sets her mind on acquiring an even better husband.
To be honest, the romance was a bit lackluster for the first of the novel. Both the leads kind of settled into a mutual understanding of each other. The FL wanted to aquire the best husband to not let others look down on her or her maternal family and to fulfill her vanity while the ML went with the flow as he lusted after her beauty. Both understood each other's intentions and was totally okay with this kind of a (?) transactional marriage.
As it's more of a marriage-first-love-later type of story, things took a bit of time to pick up. Especially, in the later half of the novel, the issues that were not so evident before surfaced one by one. The clash of their personalities, the age-gap, the imperial pressure along with the FL's devotion towards her paternal family tore down the superficial aspect of their marriage.
In this respect, I consider it a mature romance. If you want a blackbelly ML with his mindless infatuation with a brainless FL and the onslaught of never-ending pampering, then please look elsewhere.
I've read on some reviews before that they consider the FL foolishly arrogant. But I absolutely disagree. I see Yunzhu as a breath of fresh air among the many other stereotypical or bland female lead. She is neither a saintly white lotus nor a overly clever, OP green tea. Her actions very much suit her character settings. She was brought up extremely pampered and due to her looks and standing, every guy literally worshipped at her feet except Cao Xun who warned her to not cross his bottom line even before marriage. Her lack of trust for him and her efforts for her family is completely justified especially considering her age.
As for Cao Xun, I can only say that I won't even mind the age-gap if I could snag a boyfriend like him. Dude is extremely intelligent and individualistic but still takes care of his wife's whims and well-being at every turn. His true feelings may not be as evident most of the time (even as a reader, I was in doubt). But he is the epitome of actions-speak-louder-than-words.
Yunzhu and Cao Xun's bond was so sweet that it made me sad for awhile as I realized they're not real😭😭
Even the side characters were a delight to read. Li Yong, Meng Shi, Li Yao, Li Xian, Gu Min and Sun Yurong deserve special shoutout!
Great novel. Highly recommend!
Just stick it out till the first half and you'd get the ultimate sweet romance🤌🏻🤌🏻
It's now 8/20/24... I think this was my least favorite read by this author?
This couple had a major fucking communication problem. Like in Reborn after Widowhood they did too but at least they had a tacit understanding. That's not the case here. ML got FL ... but FL had no read on ML at all. It was... annoying because he was so much older than her and just TELL HER. Like you KNOW she's ... >.> *snickers* I hate to say it but our girl is no brain trust. She's not STUPID but she's not "successful at court scheming" levels of smart. She hasn't had to be either, so you can't blame her really.
She's beautiful, rich, noble, and has lived a charmed life. Until her shitty future mother in law fucks shit up. [Well, after her dad messes up too ... sigh.]
There were some scenes where I was like 😱 no REALLY?! And just ... argh. I don't really see myself re-reading this book but I actually liked both characters more than I did FL in Widowhood. >.> It's all hard to explain.
I did like reading different - and "difficult" characters though. And loved how the family unit was GOOD. For FL, they're so supportive of each other and love each other. No stupid back stabbing and shit. There was growth for so many of the characters, and meaningful relationships developed.
Solid C, honestly. ~*~*~*~ Weaving a Bridge of Silk with the Monarch’s Kin
C48 lol I dunno why I’m so excited ML gave FL a thousand taels for new years money but I am ❤️💯
Ahhh! I literally (quiet) screamed “ahhhh shit shit shit” when I got to c51 & saw it’s titled “May 7th: End of Emperor Yuan Qing’s reign” 🙊🙊🙊🙊🙊 the emperor tracing “2” in Li Young’s hand repeatedly as he’s dying.
C52 noooooo I’m SO MAD. I get Li Yao only telling his dad about the emperor wanting 2nd prince to take the throne but AHHHH. Stupid emperor and stupid officials.
C53 glad ML is friends with the Governor of the fiefdom & told Li Xian the “password” to seek help if necessary but I am so stressed and anxious and ANGRY.
😱😱😱😱😱 literally jaw still hanging open FL’s dad just died like that in c60?!?!?!?! Nooooo 😐 ok so that was translator error? 😖😖😖 I had to take a fucking two hour break. Also 😖 I can’t tell if FL really is stupid or not. So far unfortunately I’m leaning yes.
C63 awww I love that he apologizes and gives her time to work through her mad & is supportive and there for her. Poor girl.
C64 omfg amazing re: FL pouring an entire pot of tea on that bitch
C65 I’m SO MAD this is so shittily “translated” cuz a lot just doesn’t make sense! But I appreciate ML is willing to apologize for his mistakes. 😅 FL grudgingly somewhat admits hers too
C68 😿 even anticipating it I’m sad ML’s bestie Zhang XingJian the Marquis died on/the wee hours after his 33rd birthday. And 😭 ML’s dream of him Glad he & FL seem to have reconciled though
I am FURIOUS at the shitty guards & imperial “doctor” constantly trying to assassinate P2/Li Wang & poor Li Xian. And they murdered the doctor the Li family sent
C75 their distance now makes me sad
Ew c76 the shitbag little emperor definitely covets FL. HIS AUNT.
C77 omg thank GOD for a smart & capable ML. I’m so fucking glad he brought up the creepy shitbag emperor cuz our girl *sigh* she stupid. A fraction here is his fault but 😖
C78 omg the eunuch’s assassination attempt I’m actually kinda mad the emperor is still alive at the end of the c though I read the attack on the ice and under water literally 🙊
C82 awwwwww him wanting a child but only with her. And previously saying he wants them to really try for 2 years. (And 😱😅 he… <.< imo def had a hand in the assassination)
C90 awwww ML picking all those jujubes for FL & being so protective of them 😹☠️❤️ (and him carrying her around the beach…)
Awww c92 has she finally figured out he does love her & will treat her better than anyone else she can find? Also this cold BETTER NOT KILL HIM OR THREATEN HIS LIFE
Ahhh c95 was the “official” end - she’s preggers!
C97 yay successful birth!
C98 finally revealed to be a boy ❤️💯
C99 7 year jump Cao Yu mostly like his dad & Cao Bing is 3 he heh is playful and seems to be a scamp Li YunZhu & Cao Xu hopefully finally have it easy…
Eeek c100 don’t like him going off to war! Love how he ~fixed his relationship with the 3yo
C104 awww “I will be at your beck and call for the rest [of my life.]” this steady devoted ML ❤️
