This volume of Dan Da Dan perfectly encapsulates what makes this series great. Emotions drive the story and combine exorcism, modern idols, heavy metal, a chase through a city and a beautiful flashback that feels real and heavy.
OH THIS IS GOOD. i ... ONCE AGAIN can not believe how beautiful the art is. its like amazing and the story??? LOVE the idol with the class rep. i love how all of these side characters are becoming important and it feels earned. and i love all of them like i love my wacky cursed and haunted students. LOVE. i cant get enough of this - makes me laugh and then cry in sadness and fear in the next chapter just PERFECT
Wow, between all this randomness, this constantly hits with these our of nowhere emotional beats that actually make me tear up... The most random-ass fights and bonkers action occurs, flip the page once and BOOM - the most beautiful conclusion or continuation for a character you know for lile 3 chapters makes you almost bawl your eyes out...
This is possibly the nuttiest thing I've ever read, and it's a whole lotta fun. I am fully caught up, which means I'm stuck waiting and wanting. Oh well. Super recommendation!
After the climactic events of the past few chapters, Dandadan takes a breather with this amusing, somewhat light volume. Class C's rep, Rin Sawaki, finally gets her time in the spotlight. Turns out, as with most everyone in Momo and Okarun's orbit, that Sawaki has a yokai problem of her own. Most of this volume is taken up with resolving her predicament, and while entertaining in Tatsu's typically cheeky and kinetic way, it's starting to feel a bit formulaic to me. Especially in the wake of Vamola's tale and the (barely) staved-off invasion of the Kur.
On the topic of the Kur, Count Saint-Germain arrives at Kami High posing as a teacher by the name of Sanjome. There's some comedy derived from his attempts to fit in, best exemplified in his awkward language (Niiiice) and cold stares. Okarun also gets a lead on the location of his missing nut, which looks to be the focus of the succeeding volume. The cliffhanger promised as much and left me wanting more, despite my reservations about the series feeling as though it's languishing.
As per usual with Tatsu, the art is mostly-stellar. There's some of his usual two-page spreads when it comes to the action, and he has some visual odes to Mad Max: Fury Road which made me smirk. Perhaps the weekly format took its toll just a bit during the publication of these chapters, as Tatsu does resort to reusing a panel of Seiko shouting something at Sawaki twice, though perhaps the repetition was intentional, IE for comic effect or kinetic impact.
If you've come this far, Dandadan is still a fun ride. And while I have my gripes, I was happy to finally learn Sawaki's backstory, was even moved by it. I just hope the series gets weirder from here on out.
NANGIS SIHHHHH 😭 gue paling gabisa kalo soal persahabatan gitu, top 1 film gue di letterboxd aja tentang persahabatan karena gue paling gabisa emang kalo bersentuhan sama genre satu ini.
gue pikir sawaki a.k.a ketua kelasnya okarun itu bakal jadi tokoh figuran yang sliweran aja, eh ternyata muncul lagi di vol ini dan lumayan mendominasi. meski ternyata karakter nih bocah satu rada freak, backstorynya mengandung bawang satu kilogram 😭 kekeluargaan sama persahabatan kalau di gabung emang gaada lawannn, jujur gue rada berharap sawaki bakal join geng agak laen karena karakternya menarikkkkk.
gue yakin perhiasan keluarganya okarun di ambil si guru aneh sanjome yang jadi utusan alien itu (iya nggak sih njir? di vol sebelumnya kan dia sempet di singgung sama alien) jadi gue yakin nih alien ganteng villain, sus banget gerak-geriknyaaa. mari kita liat ya di vol selanjutnya nih orang beneran jahat apa engga, jujur gue agak trauma nuduh2 sembarangan takut ternyata kayak vamola 🥹🙏
Series: Dandadan Ch. 121-129 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
In this volume, the kids are back to school after defeating the alien invasion. They decide to create a school club about the occult to help with their fights against spirits and aliens. A suspicious teacher named Mr. Sanjome agrees to be their advisor. I am very interested in learning more about Sanjome because he is definitely up to something.
The kids end up helping Okarun’s classroom representative, Rin, who is having issues with being crushed by a yokai called Ombusman. This was an interesting yokai and the whole battle was really amusing and fun. Rin was an interesting character and I wonder if she will appear more in the series now that she can see the spirits too. Also the reappearance of some past side-characters in this battle was a fun inclusion.
TW: death of a childhood friend in a car accident; guilt over her death;
I can't decide if I should rate this 4 or 4.5 stars.
Aira is on the cover even though she's barely in the book. I've been reading manga for 18 years, so I do know the usual order of characters on the covers goes from main characters to less important characters and or characters introduced later (especially with shonen series), but this is vol. 15. I haven't seen the covers of the previous volumes in a while so I don't remember who's on them but I guess it would have to be Okarun and Momo to be the only reason why Aira is on this cover even though, she's only there for like 2 pages. I'm not mentioning this because I have a problem with it, I just thought it was kind of funny.
This series is giving me JRPG vibes, similar to some of my favorite Persona series. The characters are in school, but have these secret powers, and are slowly joining one by one as they try to thwart the forces of evil. Or are they evil? Well, if aliens and yokai are constantly after them, there's something to be said about that. This volume reveals another character's inclusion into the group as she struggles to come to terms with a terrible event in her past.
But this cover? This character barely makes an appearance in the volume and gets to be the only character on the cover? Interesting.
