Raw, authentic emotion permeates the eight stories in this collection, tales dealing with prison life, from death to the very real bonds convicts form, to the perverse mixture of hope and terror that accompanies parole. The author, Kenneth Brydon, does not talk down to his readers at any point, respecting us enough to let us walk side by side with him, to some surprising destinations.

Several of the stories do a great job dealing with the existential dread common to us all: the certainty of death.

"A body lying in a coffin somehow didn’t seem so dead, but the image of your brother being burned up with fire told of a certain and final end."

"The Distance Between Right and Wrong" teaches that the "distance" is both short and interminably long. For those of us who have no context for prison life, Brydon brings us the machinations (processes, movements, expectations, language/lingo) while layering it with the realities (relationships, hierarchy, daily rhythms) and emotions (the same ones we ALL experience every day). The reader can't help but marvel at the internalized guilt and the in-your-face bravado these guys wrestle with every day. In one moment, "violence filled the space between us" and in the next, "there's a whole lot of forgiveness in God."
